Sim card problem - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hello everyone
I'm having a problem with my Sim card and or holder. It randomly says Sim card not found or missing when it's perfectly still. I tried replicating the problem by throwing my phone into the couch and shaking it, but that doesn't do it. I have flashed multiple roms, flappjaxxx, cm 10 "stable", paranoid android, but as of now I'm on 100% stock. I used kies to restore to stock and i updated my baseband with I717UCMB4. Is there a clear cache option? I didn't clear any caches going to stock. As of right now it works but will go out sometime today....
Thanks in advance and I have found a $9 replacement with tools but that's 9 dollars and far away.

It's a known hardware issue, call warranty. This topic has been covered multiple times and a quick search would yield a lot of results. At&t replaced mine no questions asked. I had a repair place near me and walked in after talking with warranty on the phone with a wiped phone and handed it over and they handed me a new one.

What if it isn't covered by the warranty? Can i replace it or no? I apologize but I really did search and again but I do not see my particular problem...
Once again thanks.

I suggest you take the device to a qualified repair shop...
While it is possible to change this item yourself, it does take expertise, and the proper tools...
your call of course....g

Sorry to bring it up again, but I've searched and the only temporary solution is to take the sim and battery out for a minute to place in another phone which I get a random text from 1-000-000-000. It says in the text....
Alpsgaacds01.attwireless.net:5400f=0.......
Blah Blah Blah.
I'll keep searching and I'm going to call AT&T to see if they can help. My phone is out of warranty btw...

You can call Samsung and ask for the price to replace the sim slot. I doubt it would be above $50. You don't have to be under a warranty to get a good repair.

I ordered the part and i will post results. I have replaced my charging port before so this shouldn't be harder.

Finally got and installed my new sim card and sd card tray and it did not improve my condition... It still randomly says the simply card is not there.... I'll try getting Samsung to fix.

A couple quick questions.
1) Why wasn't your phone covered by warranty? Did it suffer water damage or did you open it?
2) Have you searched online for a repair center? There a couple good one's out there that'll probably take a lot less time than samsung will.
3) Did you just replace the tray or the whole board it was attached to?
If I recall correctly (someone correct me if I'm wrong) if you send in the phone for repair instead of warranty they'll charge you an evaluation fee and could take up to a month to repair it. I had a similar incident with my old blackjack and they decided I was out of warranty and charged me a $50 "evaluation" fee. I told them to keep the phone and went out and bought a blackjack2.
But back on point. Check online, there have been a few good vendors and a couple recommended on XDA for repair, I just can't recall any of their names. I hope it goes well

Did Samsung fix it or did you get the issue fixed?
I am having the same issue, I bought a new replacement SIM slot, did the replacement, worked for like a whole 2 minutes, then told me SIM card issue and to restart and hasn't seen the SIM card since. I've owned the phone for like a year and a 3 months, so I'm really doubting it's under warranty anymore (standard warranties are generally only a yr anyway) plus now that I've done the work to replace the card they may take ye ol "you've opened it, no warranty anymore." route.
I've put my SIM card back in an old iPhone 3G I still have & it gets recognized no problem. Wondering if it's a motherboard issue at this point. I'd go ahead and buy a Note II but I'm afraid as soon as I do they'll announce the Note III and that would just plain ol' SUCK!!!!

It can't hurt trying to see if you're still covered under warranty. Unless it's obvious it's been worked on.
Also a few people reported fixing SIM card errors by reverting back to stock with Odin. Then reflashing their favorite rom.

Try this. Worked for me

My Note developed the "No SIM" problem after upgrading to the new AT&T stock ROM 4.1.2. The first time this happened I took my Note in to an AT&T kiosk and picked up a new SIM. The next day the error happened again. I decided to do some research and find and fix the problem myself.
A lot of trial and error later the problem seems to have been solved. My device has been running just fine for three days now. Of course, it could just be coincidence... At any rate I DO NOT promise that this will work for you, but the steps I used are:
1) Do a full nandroid backup.
2) Do a Titanium backup of all aps.
3) Go to setting, -> More Settings, -> Mobile Networks, -> Access Point Names. Create a new APN and populate it like this:
Name- ATT Phone
APN- Phone
Proxy- Not set
Port - Not set
User Name- Not set
Password- Not set
Server- Not set
MMSC- http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS Proxy- proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS Port- 80
MCC- 310
MNC- 410
Authentication type- None
APN type- default,admin,fota,mms,supl,hipri,internet
APN protocol- IPv4
Enable/disable APN- (check mark)
Bearer- Unspecified
Once that is done save and exit, then make the new APN the default.
4) Have a fully charged OEM battery handy.
5) Remove back, battery, & SIM card.
6) Clean SIM by wiping with a soft, lint-free cloth. May use a bit of acetone if necessary, but if you do make sure you get it ALL off. Wipe the battery contacts while you're there.
7) Reinsert the SIM and the fully charged battery.
8) Boot into Recovery and do a full wipe.
9) Reboot and wait a few minutes. Check that the "No SIM" error is gone!
10) Setup may be via Google Restore, Titanium Backup, some combination, or just a full reconfigure.
I worked for me, maybe it will for you, too. Thanks to RangerCaptain for a link to the APN settings..
Peace Out

Scratch the approach above. After two days I'm right back to the same "No SIM" error. I've ordered a replacement SIM port from eBay. I'll edit again after I see if that works. Sincerely apologize if I misled anyone in the meantime.

I think mine is coming up on 8 years old, still going strong!
I recently got my sim changed because Tmo store did it for free. I spoke to the rep about the advantage of changing to newer sim and he said that it will have new information about the tmo network, and that might improve speed. Also if your phone is getting delay text messages (few hours or days latter) then the new sim would fix it.
Mine old sim was 5+ years too and i didnt have any issue. If it free, why not!
Also ask the rep to keep your old sim in case you need a replacement sim. I think it cost about $10 for replacement sim.
No need to update the sim card. 6+ strong here. If you need a new one for any reason, do not go to an official tmo store. They will charge you $20. Your better off going to an authorized reseller. Preferebly like a target or walmart. A place where they dont really care and will give it away for free.
I actually still have the sim card that came in the box (still in the box). But When I got my Vibrant I just pulled my sim out of my old phone and put it in my Vibrant. I don't want to mess anything up but, would it help or hurt anything if I put this new one in my Vibrant?

When i got my Vibrant back in October i was not told to switch the sim to the newer one, but i was noticing really choppy really poor 3g signal. I did my research and the newer sims have something to do with it. Now since i switched to the newer sim my phone gets excellent reception.

Put the old one in and go to your contacts and press menu>import from sim. And then they will be on your phone. Call the number that came with the new card and activate your new one. Put that one in the phone. Open contacts, menu>export to sim and you will have them in your new sim

If everything works
probably no need to change it. But probably no harm either.
I had a SIM that was more than 10 years old - going back to Voicestream.
The MyAccount app and WiFi calling wouldn't work with it, so I went to Tmo store and asked for a new SIM. They gave it to me for free.
My Wife and I had to change our SIM cards (over 10 years old) because they would not allow importing of numbers to the Vibrant. Nor did they allow us to sign in to the Android market. Took Tmobile a whole day to figure out what was wrong.lol
The only reason I have ever replaced my SIM card is when I have lost my phone and not had an extra SIM card. I now have 8 SIM cards... if you you really feel the need to replace it send me a pm w/ an address and I will gladly send you one. But if your SIM card is working there is no need to replace it.

"not registered on network"

This is my last hope.
I had a contract SIM card. i got rid of the phone. put it in a old Nokia u had. bare in mind this is a micro SIM card, i just needed to work my way round putting it into a normal SIM card slot. and it worked fine for few days, then all of a sudden I could not make calls or text. Then I got my S3. Unlocked it fine. put my SIM card into it, internet worked, data connection. But i could not send or receive calls or texts. every time i call someone it says "not registered on network". I have tried hard reset and I have tried restarting and turning on and off settings but it will not make no difference.
PLEASE HELP. I need this, any input to this would be great.

Thanks for the reply guys. however I can't understand why it would be the phone. as it was having issues with my other one. is it possible to copy my contract over to another SIM card if I go into the o2 store?
I had this exact message during the time my new SIM has not yet been registred/active. Since youve also mentioned it not working in another phone, i'd assume its the SIM, not the S3.
About copying your contract from one SIM to another, no, this is NOT possible. Go to your carrier and ask for a new SIM. Test it on site. If still a no-go, ask them to show you it works in another device, to define find out if your S3 is the culprit.

Sim card disconnects at random

On a daily basis my phone will randomly tell me that there is no Sim card(btw I'm att of that makes any difrence) in the phone. The only way to fix the problem is to reboot the phone. Any ideas what's causing this? I tried flashing a different rom but to no avail. What should I do?

glad im not the only one.. i posted about this few weeks ago.. i tried going to att store and they wouldnt give me a new phone since it was the 16th day ( 14 day return policy).I thought it was still 30. I went thru warranty and they are sending me a new phone. just waiting for that to arrive.. still happens every once in awhile. annoying.
Happens to me too. Don't have to reboot though. Turning Airplane mode on and off does the trick. Every day or so I take it out and put it back in. Not sure if it helps but it makes me feel like it prolongs the issue.

Here's a summary of what I've learned, y'all correct me if I'm mistaken:
ATT sims only
Airplane mode and back - works as temporary fix
SOME report reseating the sim is a permenant fix
SOME report getting a new sim doesn't fix
Since this is happening to me daily now (maybe more I'm not noticing), I'm going to see what I can come up with. I just opened the tray and slid it back in with two pieces of paper backing the sim card (on the non-contact side of course), to see if by chance there is a problem with the physical connection of the sim, and if this can fix it. I'll keep you updated. I'm also going to see if I can get a new sim card from ATT.
Has anyone come up with any other solutions - or are we all dealing with this intermittently and just tolerating it?
===== UPDATE 12/14/2012 =====
5 Days now with perfect connection. Two sheets of paper thicker sim card works.
There is a few threads all about the same thing. I'm posting in this one because it's the highest on the list. I never had the issue before rooting. So I wonder of anyone can confirm this being an issue pre-root/pre-bootloader unlock? Just a thought

I have been having this daily with my AT&T One X+ as well. I'm stock, unrooted. I went back to aT&T today and they told me it was the SIM Card. We replaced that and it seems to be working. Now I know it hasn't been long enough to know if this is the fix or not, so we shall see.
For those who added the paper to the SIM tray, did your SIM card feel at all loose before you added the paper ? Mine doesn't feel loose at all.

No SIM CARD error Galaxy Note

Ok guys i know there are a few threads already created for this error, however; I haven't seen a solution yet, So i'm creating this thread in hopes that we can compile all the information about this, and maybe find a solution,
Here's the story, I bought an Unlocked Galaxy note SGH-i717D on ebay about a year ago, the phone was working like a charm and it loved it , then a few months later i started getting a "NO SIM Inserted" error message.
The SIM card was pretty old so I went to my carrier and changed it. That seemed to do the trick and it worked fine until a few weeks ago, when the damn error showed up again. I'm literally getting this error message every day, making the phone impossible to use.
I've tried EVERYTHING:
1- I ruled out the SIM card being faulty since it's new and it works on other phones
2- Made sure the SIM was making contact with the pins
3- Put Scotch tape on the SIM to make it fit better on the SIM slot
3- Deleted cache
4- Rooted my phone and installed titanium backup to delete all user and system app cache
5- flashed the original rom back into my phone
Nothing seems to work (the titanium backup method works for a few hours/days) so please if any of you know the solution to this issue please let me know.
I highly appreciate any help!

yup i've read a lot about it, it doesn't seem to be a problem with the hardware, cuz it works fine when I delete the cache, i've read it has to do with the 3g/4g band the phone is working with, that may cause the issue, but then again nobody's been able to confirm this.
Having the same problem.

Mine was under warranty so I just returned it for an exchange. Got a new SIM, no changes. A factory reset fixed it for a short period.

So I rooted my phone and installed titanium backup like i mentioned on my first post, there's an option on Titanium backup called CLEAR cache for all user and system apps, that seems to do the trick at least for a few hours and some time days.
Sounds like what you guys may need is the sim card port replacement. whatever you do do not send your phone to samsung if you arent under warranty, you will be broke when your done with them. the part is 7$ including shipping on ebay, you can type in sim card port to find it. it is very easy to install, if you dont feel comfortable you can bring it to a shop.

You can easily find the parts for the tmobile version too. Ebay is where I start looking for parts.
Hi i am having the same issue on my Galaxy Note i717R (Canadian Version - originally from Rogers Network) , would appreciate if you could share a solution with me too .
This happened on my i717 just after warranty ran out (of course). It first started off with losing the use of 4g so I couldnt make calls and only could use lte data. Then the radio would stop working and nothing worked. I then restarted my phone and no sim card inserted error. Eventually it would work again but last night I was using the phone and data with no problem but nothing can fix the error today. I'm stuck using the desire HD unless I can figure this out.

I've had this same problem. Reset system and use caches with Titanium Backup but this didn't last. Reset to the original ROMs (Samsung update to Android 4.1 ) did not help. Finally I bought and replace the sim and microsdcard reader (which was remarkably easy to do), This didnt help either. Anyone have a solution?

WTF? it seems like its a software issue then, this is so weird! I read somewhere that it may be the band the phone works with, I'm in Costa Rica so the 3g, 4g bands that we use here may be a bit different and could be causing the problem, then again i know NOTHING about cell phone band frequencies....
This is what's been working for me, I delete cache using titanium back up and then leave the phone off through the night, this method seems to work for a a few weeks maybe a month and when i get the error message again i repeat the process. Also make sure the pins on the sim tray are touching the sim card I noticed on my phone they were a little low so i took a needle and lift them up a bit.
Anyways I really got sick of the error, so I'm changing the sim card tray, if that doesn't work I'm getting rid of this phone.
replaced sim tray and problem is still there...wtf

I was having the same problem. The error would hapoen 10+ times a day sometimes.
I replaced the sim card reader, stil happened. Flashed new rom and modem, didn't fix thr problem.
Started rooting around, thought that maybe the piece of case that sits under the leading edge of the sim card lifts it up, occasionally breaking sim contact when it flexed.
Took a screwdriver and bent the three contacts out some more, now it only happens occasionally.
I think I may be onto something here.

Recently (with a different DNA), after dropping it a few times, I've noticed that it's been happening again more frequently (2-3 times a day). Not sure what's causing it, or if dropping it affected it at all.. usually a reboot fixes it, but that's not exactly a permanent solution.
I had to get new phone

Just got off the phone with Verizon and they are going to send me a new device. I guess the SIM card issue is a hardware issue, not the update and they are aware of it. I told them about reseating and replacing the SIM card but they claimed that eventually the issue would come back if I'm on the same device. Problem solved.
mine had that issue after i dropped it one day. i just took the sim card out, blew into the slot nintendo cartridge style, and put the card back in. made sure the sim card was securely in there and booted the phone back up. no problems since then. my guess is that the slot doesn't fit the sim card tightly enough so any large impacts (i.e. dropping your phone) will jar it enough that it won't read properly
No drops, pristine device, the only thing that appears to have happened is the update, which now causes the SIM card problem.
I had it three times, rebooted twice, which seemed to temporarily cure the problem. Reseated it and rebooted, and haven't yet had an issue. However, prophylactically called VZW, and almost immediately they were discussing a warranty swapout. It arrives today. Since I haven't had an issue in ~12 hours, I'm going to let it ride for a few days. Better to have the device I bought new than the devil I don't know, I figure, plus the additional hassle of changing all my data over from a phone without an SD card slot.
Will update again if I continue to have the error, but to their credit, VZW appears to be well abreast of the situation.

Thanks for the post. Haven't had the issue (yet), but good to know that VZW is keeping up with their customers.
LOL... got the issue 6 times in a day. Got the new device and the 'certified pre-owned' rebooted while I was re-installing my apps and won't turn back on. When I tried to turn it on all that would happen is the softkeys would flash. That's it. LAME. I sent it back and told them that I'll stick it out with the current device. I had data reset the device that I was originally exchanging and ended up putting all the stuff back on. Funny enough, no issues yet. Screw the pre-owned.
Love my dna but ......
I was having the same problem, so I called a Verizon rep and they told me that they're working in a software fix in a future update.... Lol i told them that this was unacceptable and that when this happens I can't even dial 911!Long story short they're sending me a free galaxy note 2, which is too bad because I freaking loved my dna... When it worked On the positive side at least I'll burn some extra calories carrying that bad boy around

Anyone try taping it in. it's obvious it happens eventually on all DNAs...
Edit. Just added tape to the back of mine. I just think the SIM tray sucks. I wouldn't doubt that doesn't help.

I read somewhere to rub off the wax on the SIM with an eraser. Just do it lightly till it comes off. I've had no issues since. I know there are a lot of "solutions" on this but it seems pretty random. I've done the update, factory reset, new sim. So far the fix I just mention has kept me from having issues. Good luck!

For my phone and my wife's phone replacing sim cards worked twice for each phone (once shortly after we bought them in November, and once after the latest OTA).

I had this problem back in April and it seemed to stop after the OTA. Started up again about a week ago and was much more frequent. Swung by a VZW store a couple days ago and got the SIM replaced - since then I haven't had any SIM issues.
I'm getting this issue on cm10.1. Yesterday I got the sim card error and rebooted, and woke up to it this morning (apparently the phone won't charge via wireless with this message so my battery was also very low). I am also having headphone jack problems so I'm thinking it may be time to call verizion.
Try cleaning it and not touch the contacts on the SIM card when reinstalling. I had that issue and hasn't happend since cleaning SIM card. Not saying that's the issue for everyone and adding tape also sounds like a reasonable solution. Just sayin

I had this problem all the time while using the Senseless ROM. Since going to CM, I only had the issue once and that was about a month ago. I think it has to do with the ROMs, not the hardware.
Ha. Latest update with my SIM issue. Actually got sick of Verizon's runaround. Called HTC direct and they acknowledged the issue. They desribed the issue as a problem with the SIM tray. They are repalcing the tray. I will report back about how this works out. I think that its total crap that Verizon just keeps replacing the devices without replacing the tray. To pile it on, getting a replacement device seems to void the manufacturers warranty and replaces it with a 30 day warranty because its a replacement device. I'm really growing tired of Verizons lack of support and their inability to get on the same page as the manufacturers.

It is probably some type of a hardware problem, from my experience. The biggest supporter of this is that Verizon's latest patch does nothing but to tell the phone to restart the radios. It is just putting a bandaid on the problem and not doing anything.
I was just about to trade mine in for a new one when i tried the tape fix. Works perfectly ever since. I was skeptical too, but just try it. It really can't hurt.
I had it happen once since I've had it since January. Happened about a month after getting it. Cleaned the Sim contacts and havent had an issue since.
