[Q] Best Atrix 4g alternative on T-mobile? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

About a month ago I switched from at&t post paid to tmobile prepaid $30 a month plan. The phone works on tmobile after I got the unlock code from at&t, but I only get HSPA+ in certain areas, the majority of the time I'm stuck on EDGE.
I'd like to get a phone around $100-$130 used/new/refurb that is comparable to the Atrix 4g(dual core, dual cameras, 512mb-1gb ram, 16gb+ storage) but with the ability to use t mobiles 1700/2100mhz bands. Having ICS or JB would be a plus.

I would say the G2X probablly... Specs are very very similar to the atrix. Also it seems there's some good development work going on over in their forum.
Edit: actually the HTC amaze might be an even better option.

HTC Amaze 4g and S2X are very similar, same processor, same amount of ram, onboard storage, however HTC Amaze has a smaller higher resolution screen at 256 ppi and 4.3 inches vs 208 ppi and 4.5 inches. HTC Amaze is heavier though, so it really comes down to samsung vs HTC and screen vs size/weight. I believe S2X has the more active development community however the HTC Amaze's is still alive too.

Do NOT get the G2x. I promise you'll be disappointed. It's buggy, has no working ICS, and poor battery life. Very bad phone. The Amaze, the Sensation, and the Galaxy S2 are really your best bets. Sensation has great support, but all three are good choices. The Amaze is probably the best of the three
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda app-developers app

I have worked with three of these phones (Atrix, LG2X & Amaze) and would say that the Amaze 4G is the better option. The G2X looks great on paper but does not perform well and any rom I installed had random reboots.
The Amaze has a lot of rom choices and also feels similar to the Atrix; rounded corners and the soft buttons.
You could also try and find the Atrix HD for cheap as it works on t-mobile with LTE and all.

[Q] try another sensation or get the amaze?

So I had bought an HTC Sensation this past Thursday. Yesterday I noticed dust behind the screen. Googled it and found it was a big problem for some and they exchanged it. Being within my 14 days I went today to exchange my sensation which T-Mobile did right away. Get back to work and start setting up the phone and notice an even bigger piece of dust under the screen! I went back after work to get a third one. The guy there then let me see the amaze. I liked it but do like the looks of the sensation better. Amaze was faster and smoother.
So basically I am the kind of person where yes dust under the screen annoys the crap out of me and I expect more from paying that much for a phone. So what would you do? Get a third sensation and hope for no dust or get the amaze and deal with the looks? (I love the back of the amaze but hate the metal ring, but it is starting to grow on me)
you answered your own question seriously bro
I'm thinking along the same lines as the OP here...got seriously burnt (and annoyed) with the Sensation, had 2 units both with exactly the same problem and have now received a full refund the piece of crap! So...I do like the looks of the HTC units and my wife is in the market for a new phone (upgrade from the Desire) and the Amaze fits the bill...and so far from googling, I've not foun any "serious" recurrent problems...
On a slightly different topic, but still sort of related (!) can anyone tell me if the Amaze 4g unit will work in Australia (I know there is no 4g here yet, but its coming next year apparently)?
I still say sensation because if development but amaze is picking up so for the more ram but mostly camera sensor maybe amaze.
Sorry. Guess I didn't help at all lol

I came from a Sensation and sometimes I rather miss it., because of the dev community. It is a solid phone that looks good and has the right size weight and thickness. (only if you get the ones without the dust in the glass).
I upgraded to an amaze because of the camera, dedicated video and camera buttons, NFC, larger memory, built in 16gb and also better front facing camera. At this point I like it a lot. The phone works well and the pictures are an improcement, (more details in low light).
IMO the screen seems to be more vivid and brighter than the sensation, even tho they say it is the same screen.
I am just waiting for the Amaze dev community to grow and this will be even better than the sensation. (bad timing for the Amaze community cuz of waiting on ICS, dev doesn't want to put too much time into and older build when ICS is coming in a moth or so.

I had both as well as the Inspire 4G and the G2 and I would say the Amaze is the best phone I've ever used hands down. Just like all phones, development takes time but it is progressing at the same pace as anything else I think. I was happy with my Sensation but the Amaze is just so much better.
As a totally happy and satisfied user of a rooted glacier, would I notice any substantial improvement in just the overall experience of using the phone?
The only major plus I see is the larger screen in terms of real tangible differences that I would notice immediately.
Are there any "must have" features that the amaze would deliver that the average user would notice and benefit from?
Wow cool to know this because I went to tmo amd I WAS going to buy the sensation but I decided to get the amaze. I bought it full price,

Welcome fellow Ruby user. For the extra $29, you have at least future proofed your phone for an extra 3-6 months with the extra stuff that the Sensation doesn't have.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a former Sensation user and love it. But the Amaze has more RAM, better camera (backlit illuminated), better front cam 2mp, dedicated camera button and video button, louder speaker, NFC, faster CPU out of the box (even tho the Sensation is underclocked with the same chip), larger battery (but doesn't last as long), and IMO a brighter and clearer screen (even tho it's supposedly the same screen; maybe I got a better batch this time).
Enjoy it.
So initial impression from sensation was that this amaze is definetly bigger. Couple hours later and I'm already used to it and love it.
Camera buttons are awesome.
Stock for stock it destroys the sensation.
I'm a very happy guy right now

TBH, you have [legally] 18 month software support. Even further, you get a PHENOMENAL camera and 4g support. The Amaze will have much coming to it over the next 18 months.

Worth getting an Amaze now since...

Is it worth getting Amaze now since the nexus is releasing (for tmobile)/ has been released (international version)?

Why you think nexus is better than the amaze?(once ics gets ported to the amaze)
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G using xda premium
I have both amaze and GN gsm (both on tmo), and they're both a great phone. Still can't decide which one to use for my day to day.
The GN is very light and comfy to use, while amaze has a great screen and feels heavier (it's like the first gen iphone with retina display). I'd say the amaze feels a bit snapier than the GN on the software side of things, even though ics is a real contender. That being said, once the ics is ported to amaze, I might use the amaze solely only because I'm not a fan of the pentile bluish display on the GN.
I have both rooted and stayed stock, still trying to explore the possibilities on both devices. Going from the first gen iPhone through the iPhone 4, Android is truly a better experience for a gadget lover like me.

oh man this is funny since for me the amaze screen looks bad coming from the sensation, on the amaze i can see every pixel on the sensation i couldnt see any just looked clear and nice..
Isn't the Galaxy Nexus some $800 to import here? If it were of similar price to my Nexus One I would have considered getting it, but I'm very happy with the Amaze now and like still having a search and menu button.

To be honest I'm kinda leaning on waiting to see what the galaxy s3 lube is going to look like. The GN is nice but no SD slot kinda kills it..

Technically, if your installing a custom Rom the only different between the two phones are the ram.
Since the sensation can be clocked to 1.8ish, you can buy a bigger battery, you can port the amazes camera software.
The amaze will be a lot smoother over all though, since it does have more ram.
I would get an Amaze, there is no point in having a million roms, you only need a few good ones.

but the RAM (extra 256) really makes that much of a diff? because by looking at the beginning of your comment, i was sure U R going to say - get the sensation. Then U mentioned the RAM as the decisive factor.
With the custom ROM, I'm pretty sure the Sensation will be just as smooth (if not smoother) as the Amaze
256mb will make quite a big difference, the stock sensation Rom is a lot more laggy than the stock amaze Rom is, and they're practically the same thing. If not less "stuff" on the sensation.
So unless you can't handle not flashing a Rom every day, get the amaze.
Even with underclocking to 1.2ghz my phone is still smooth, and you get the battery life of the sensation.
Now of course, everyone here will be biased towards the amaze. And if you ask the sensation people they'd probably say the sensation.
It all comes down to your personal taste, I was in the same position as you. But I chose the Amaze, and I don't regret it at all.
If you can, go into a T-Mobile store and test them out.

OK guys let's be honest, is the Sensation more worthwhile than the amaze

Before you go and bash me saying we do one of these threads like every week I'm just asking an honest question. is it worth it to trade an amaze for a sensation or go to the sensation from the amaze because if development and support
The down side is less RAM slightly worse camera and no internal storage
But besides that speed wise they should be similar since they run the same chip.
Software is a huge part of the phone, and I don't want the one s because it doesn't have a removable battery and storage.
What should I do? I think me and my amaze have been together long enough
Damn noob... There's a Q&A Section.
Noooo it's a discussion thread
In my opinion Sensation is better than Amaze since it gets more software supports (official CM, yah), integrated SoC (seems to be more power efficient), and is slightly thinner.
Hey eclipze! I personally think that the trading to the sensation is a good decision unless your snagging some cash. But I personally have owned 3 sensations. And have had one at the same time as having an amaze. I compared my stock amaze side by side with my cm 9 sensation. And the speed, smoothness, and stability of my amaze was noticeably better than the sensation. So while having the support, I really don't think it out performs the amaze. I had a sensation when the amaze came out. I was honestly laughing at the amaze. It seemed like a terrible phone choice for tmobile to push because it was arguably the same specs as the amaze. I thought this for a long time. I then had an opportunity to get an amaze dirt cheap, I planned on just reselling (besides wanting to play with the camera). But once I played with it I immediately noticed a difference in performance. That aside... Out of probably 4 sensations that ever reached my hands, 3 had significant amounts of dust under the screen. This gradually increased overtime... So even if it didn't have dust to begin with, it happened eventually. Because I'm cheap... If I could find a sensation for around $150 and could sell this for over $250, I'd do it, and use the sensation until gsiii prices dropped. But unless you're getting money out of it I wouldn't find it worth it.

I think I'm having the same feelings as you. I have been thinking about switching to a different device that has more support and dev. Although, I haven't thought about the sensation. Personally, I wouldn't go to the sensation as an equal exchange. I would need cash on top since the amaze is an upgrade.
Although, I'm actually thinking about the sgs3 or the nexus. I found a s3 for 400 brand new, thinking about getting it right after this doctor's appointment.
EDIT: after some reading it seems that there are a lot of scams going on with people on CL and tmobile phones, specifically the sgs3. So maybe won't go down that route. :banghead:

I can personally care less. I don't like the Sensation as much. 14.4MB compared to 42MB. big difference for data. I originally bought my phone so I can tether it to my laptop and Xbox. I still do that. I'm happy with how the software is. I'm not a flashaholic so I really don't mind. Sure, it is slow around here. At least I made some friends around here and people know me.

I got an Amaze knowing its issues. The performance is ok and its size/weight is not as much an issue for me since it is tapered. The lack of wifi source this late is infuriating. The battery life is also mediocre at best. IMO the main problem with the amaze is the crappy HSPA+ modem that was first gen, a huge power hog, and made the phone bulky as well.
But I probably would not downgrade to the sensation despite better rom support and battery life. I'd rather just wait for the successor to the Amaze or the next google phone.

Sure it has great ROM development but I'm sure it wasn't always like that. The amaze work have great development one we figure out data. Plus it's a downgrade in specs from the amaze. If anything I would say go with a more current phone like the s3 or the one series phones.

Deciding what phone to get

I'm thinking about changing phones I'm on T-Mobile with my amaze no longer under contract. I was looking at what they have to offer and had 4 thoughts. I'm looking for input.
1. Get the iPhone 5 and sell it to make a profit and keep using my amaze
2. Get the HTC one the processor isn't much faster than the amaze and the camera isn't as good and it also lacks SD card slot
3 get the nexus 4 16gb looks pretty nice quad core processor and is aosp but still lacks an SD card slot
4 keep my amaze and wait till it craps out.
What do you guys think? And I checked out the HTC one forums and saw sports on there so I personally ask you sports how's the HTC one

Just went through this. New HTC one is very fast, don't let mhz ratings fool you. Go use the phones until the sales guy kicks you out.
I tried new htc one. Old htc one, nexus 4 and LG Optimus g cousin, s3 and note 2. All much faster than amaze. All great phones.
In the end because I didn't want to lock into contract, nexus 4 and LG Optimus g were hundreds less than the rest. Went with Optimus for LTE. Arrives this week.
Hoping when s4 is finally on display in my area I don't regret it. Based on reviews like trusted tech heads at arstecnica the new LG Optimus g pro phablet is the benchmark king. Out shortly if you like the size.

I've been using a HTC One for the past couple days and it's really fast. The front speakers sound clear and pictures are all right. The phone has no grip though so you might want to pick up a case on Amazon. The profiting from an iPhone sounds like too much work for not enough money. The Amaze is still quick for most things so unless you hate it I think you should keep it.
Go with the HTC one. It's great and development is amazing! Battery is also awesome. I get 4hrs screen on time! Sense 5 is also very fast and minimalistic making it an aosp like Rom that just tons of extra features!
I upgraded from my amaze.
You can also use the HTC logo as a Menu button so you won't lose screen realestate from an on screen menu button.
