[Q] USB Port Problem - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have a Rooted, WanamLite v6.3 ZSEMC1 ROM with AdamKernel 2.2.1+. i9300.
I updated recently from another previous version of the same ROM because I had noticed that my USB functionality has not been working. Specifically, the MTP application. Soon further found that my computer does not recognise ADB commands at all, as I used to install .apks from my computer quickly with adb install.
Odin does not even recognise my phone, even when in download mode. The only thing I havent tried yet is ADB in CWM Recovery, but im 99% sure that wont work still.
When I plug the micro-usb plug in it charges fine, but no data connection seems to occur. No windows detection, No USB device connected in the notifications bar.
I have tried:
-Backing up
-Installing vanilla ROM
-Installing stock ROM
-Using different computer with drivers
-Reinstalling Samsung Drivers
-Tried using Kies for the drivers
-Changing SD cards
-Power Cycling phone removing sim and micro-sd cards. Turning on after some time.
-Cleaning the micro-usb port on the phone with dental picks.
Im pretty much out of ideas apart from trying to organise to send it for repairs, after un-rooting.
If I was to re-root do you think this would solve the problem?
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks :good:
UPDATE: I fixed this by using Mr. Despairs suggestion.
Power off, pull battery, SIM, SD card. Power cycled the power button with no battery in it.
Waited about 1-2 minutes.
Battery in boot straight to Download Mode.
Only got it to recognise once in about 15 tries.
Thanks again Mr Despair!

You could also try another cable. Or what I read in another german forum: Shut down your phone, take the battery out and in and reboot. Then reboot into download mode and plug in your phone. Then your PC should search for drivers.

Do this as a colleague says Mr. Despair replace the cable. Often dirt in the connector. Clean the connector on the phone.

Also check ...
Also check on a different computer/port - it could be a problem with the USB drivers on your computer.
Probably the safest test would be to cross-test combinations of 2-3 computers vs 2-3 phones.

He already wrote that he tried more PCs. He would have very bad luck if it is on both. But trying doesn't cost. He shoule then also try to plug it direct into the USB ports and not through a hub.

I have also tried two other cables which both previously worked.
Ill give the hard reboot into download mode a try.
No PC recognises it at all at the moment.
I have tried all USB ports, directly not through a hub or whatnot. This includes other computers too.
Im open to any other suggestions.
Thanks for the help so far

Have you installed KIES?
KIES and ODIN cannot co-exist.
Install ONLY Samsung USB drivers then run ODIN.
As for installing apks, you shouldn't need to install via adb. You can just copy to sdcard and run from there.

I had used ODIN without KIES existing on my system.
I installed KIES to try and get it to read my phone for once.
I used ADB to install .apks when I had ADB running. I have the problem now that I cant use it, because my phone MTP, ADB or even Download Mode wont read my phone. All from different computers etc.
:crying:

Sounds more and more like a hardware failure. What about reboot to CWM then in mounts and storage to mount the USB drive? Can your PC recognize it this way?

Yeah im thinking hardware too. If I throw it into CWM and try to mount /sdcard, it doesnt to anything. Nothing changes it just stays permanently on mount /sdcard. (Its not mounting).
Mounting external_sd works but its not helping me.
Anyone ever returned a SGS3 to factory or phone provider?

I initially tried this with no success, however after about 15 tries I got it to work once!
Thanks heaps for this!
Pull Battery, SIM and SD. Press Power buttons a few times and let it sit for about 1 minute.
Battery in and boot straight to Download mode. Worked once in about 15 tries. Reflashed everything and it works now!
Thanks Despair!!:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Odin doesn't see my phone in download mode?!?!

As the title says.... I am currently running ZenDroid 2.0.1. Before flashing this as always I start off fresh by Odining back to stock then proceed with whatever rom is to my pleasing that week... I have tried using different cables. I have also tried a PC and a MAC running Parallels(VM). I also tried Hiemdall on both. All still no luck. I have googled and all I find is the suggested above. I also tried getting into download mode in all ways I know possible to see if Odin might possibly recognize it. (Holding volume buttons while plugging into PC, Up+Power button, AIO reboot into DL mode, selecting Download from power menu and even using a JIG.
If anyone else has any other suggestions or if I missed something, please LMK??
Thanks in advance for taking the time to help

I think what you need is:
Latest odin v1.85
Latest Samsung drivers
And another usb cable to try.
the method you use to get in download mode should not make a difference - if you're in download mode - you're in download mode.
Does your computer recognize your phone when the phone is booted up? Can you connect and transfer files, etc.? If so - your USB cable and connectors are good, and your problem is likely related to not having the drivers installed.
if you're trying this on a new computer - one you haven't ODIN'd your phone from before, make sure you have the samsung drivers installed.
If you can't even transfer files, etc. - try a new USB cable - and NOT one that came with a charger (some of those are not actually USB cables - they can only charge your phone). You can get usb-to-microusb cables for like a buck online - places like monoprice or many others.
If you REALLY did try new USB cables, make sure the USB ports are clean - both on the phone and on the computer you're trying to hook to.
Thanks for your responses.
I found the solution to my problem. I decided to start from scratch. I deleted the drivers, AIO and Heimdall. Then I plugged in the phone just to see if Windows 7 sees it as an unknown device still. It was recognized but it was asking for drivers this time. So I proceeded to install JUST the driver and magically everything was working NORMAL again!!
Im not sure what may have caused this to happen. I flash my phone every other week so I found it kind of odd when this did occur.
Oh well.. ITS FIXED!! AND I CAN FLASH AGAIN!!

[Q] Windows Not Recognizing Device

Hi guys, was having a few problems with my phone and decided that I'd flash the stock ROM again.
Went into ODIN as you do, and as I was flashing the stock ROM, for some reason or another I heard the disconnect/reconnect noise that Windows makes when you remove a device then FAIL came up in ODIN.
Now my phone's stuck with a phone connecting to a computer on the charge screen, it can't go into recovery mode but it can go into download mode.
Tried connecting it to my PC in download mode, and even though I've got the Samsung USB Drivers installed I get the 'USB Device Not Recognized' message, which means I can't flash the stock ROM in ODIN anymore.
Does anyone have any advice? Thank you.

Hi!
Hi, you guys install ADB on your system? And also USB debugging mode on the phone?
Should be turned on which can be done by going to Settings>Applications>Development and select USB debugging.
Try this, for me its works

I can't even turn the phone on at the moment. Only thing I can do is go into Download mode.
Help
Try this, take out the battery, then press and hold the ON button for 7-10 seconds (the longer the better). Reinsert the battery, then press ON button to start it. This is a soft reset, and wipes the temporary memory and empties all remaining power in the circuits. This helps on many phones and even laptops that won't start properly or show anything on screen.
If this does not work, try the next step. Again, do as above. But after inserting the battery, do not turn the phone on, but press and hold the ON button and the HOME button at the same time for 7-10 seconds. This is a hard reset, and works best if done after a soft reset. Just be sure the battery has at least some juice in it and isn't empty. If possible, try with another battery if this does not work.
Hope this helps!
Try going to device manager, you will probably find your device as an unrecognized device, uninstall the drivers, unplug and then plug it again and see.
if the prblm is hard then do a fresh installation of kies, device etec etc.....but if u have ur device in the device list on pc then first uninstall it...if possible try recovery mode and reset...
I tried everything you guys have suggested and none of that worked. Anyone else got any ideas?
Try everything (and I mean everything) on the following list. Given the problems you've had & that you've already tried some of these things, I'd try another PC. And if it doesn't work first go on another PC, then go thru the list & try everything on the 2nd PC.
*Ensure Kies & it's processes aren't running in Windoze task manager. Kill them if they are.
*Try different USB ports; you must be using a 'powered' or mainboard port.
*Try different USB cables (particularly the cable that came with the phone if you're not using it now)
*Try different versions of Odin (search on here/Google)
*Uninstall Kies, reboot, redownload & reinstall it, reboot, try the flash again. Also run Windoze Update.
*And if all this fails, try a different PC.
Tried all the above and a different PC.
It didn't work. I could fix the phone if the computer would pick up that the phone's connected - it just doesn't.
Total Removal of KIES including registry entries .
Reboot PC install a new copy of Kies .
Phone backup data and factory reset .
Set phone to USB storage mode using the Samsung cable connect to PC and wait for Windows to find USB drivers .Remove cable reboot phone .
Start Kies connect with cable wait for Kies to find the phone .
Note USB Debugging OFF and cable connects to a direct motherboard port only .
Nothing then only further suggestion would be to Format the PC and start over with a clean Windows install .

That's a forced download mode.
Try a blind flash to a stock firmware from Odin while connected to your computer with the phone on this screen. Even if Odin doesn't seem to register that it's connected. I've heard of at least one person this worked for.
At this point, you really have nothing to lose by trying this.
Bit of an update, I plugged it in again and it installed some drivers and ODIN picked it up. Only for it to disconnect a few moments later, now it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting over and over but ODIN's not picking it up.

I know you said you tried a different cable, but that sounds suspiciously like a bad cable.
It's not the cable, thanks any way.
Update 2: I managed to get it to connect long enough to flash the stock Kernel. Still didn't reboot. Then I connected it again and flashed the stock ROM, which bricked it again. Then I flashed the stock kernel and it works!
However, there is a problem:
When the phone gets turned off, it constantly shows the charging battery icon with warning triangle and a thermostat next to it. I can't turn the phone on because of this unless I go into Recovery mode and reboot system.
Any ideas? Thanks.

I in no way recommend this, and not sure I would do it if I ever started having this issue...
BUT - I have heard that some people faced with this condition have fixed it by physically moving the small wafer board inside the USB port with a precision screwdriver (gently!) to a more "centered" position.
If that doesn't work, look at replacing that part. Either via warranty service if you still have it, or a service center.

[Q] Is this thing f**ked?

Firstly I apologise if this has been covered anywhere - I read a load of posts and did a load of searches but came up empty handed about this specific issue.
I bought a Galaxy Ace (GT-S5830 Baseband:S5830NEKA3 OS:2.2.1) as a dev device and it's been working fine up until today, and at some point it decided it doesn't want to be able to connect to my computers. I've tried three different computers, two different operating systems, and ever tried installing Kies (urk) with no luck.
The phone can charge over USB, saying that it's charging over AC, but that's all that happens.
I can't boot in to recovery mode as holding the power+middle button+vol up just gives me a ramdump message.
Can anyone help me out?

When phone is turned off. Press and hold home+power/lock button untill it reaches recovery menu.
Check - that works. Thanks.
I'm now unsure as to how to proceed - neither adb devices nor fastboot devices are reporting anything back.
Connect device to pc. Open device manager (windows). Remove all drivers related to the ace and Samsung.
Remove the device and reboot the pc. Then connect the device. Windows update will detect the device and install the necessary drivers. If it doesn't automatically do that then open up device manager and install them manually by right clicking on the device and selecting update drivers from internet.
From the Galaxies to your Ace...!!
Thanks for your reply.
In windows there's no sign of any Samsung or Galaxy Ace drivers. Plugging it in to my Kubuntu machine gives me identical lsusb results as when not plugged in.
Have done a data wipe, checked that USB debugging is on and tried different cables
think it's screwed.
Think I could stick a ROM on the SD card and flash it? Would that work?

[Q] Stuck at cache/modem/DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET on Odin for Stock2.1

I don't have any USB device connected other than the mouse on PC. i have even tried on my laptop with no mouse.
I have downloaded pit file and uvjfd.tar two times from the forums.
I have tried flashing multiple times from both my PC & laptop using Odin 3.0 v1.0, v1.85, v3.07(latest), EZOdin v1.70 and installed Samsung USB drivers multiple times, even downloaded latest driver version from official Samsung Vibrant page.
I have tried flashing from all possible USB ports on my PC & laptop wherever the phone was being recognized. But now with the latest official Samsung Vibrant drivers, my phone is not being detected by any USB port on my PC.
But whenever I have flashed, Odin is stuck at Cache or Modem or recently(with latest samsung drivers), DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET !!
I have even tried flashing through Heimdall 1.3.1 but the zadig.exe shows the device only as 'Gadget Serial' no matter how many times I try, and installs the driver with device as Gadget Serial under libusb in Device Manager and I also tried by updating driver as Samsung Composite USB as mentioned in readme. Either Way Heimdall frontend will not flash and says "Failed to detect compatible download-mode device".
Edit: I tried with another USB cable, of LG GS500v, and Oh Lord Jesus, Odin flashed past it. Great, time to buy a new Samsung USB cable, now!

Hi!
Whomever can help me, please help me. Right now, I am on stock Froyo 2.2 after the factory reset so this is how I got it but it is rooted only. I am trying to overwrite CWM because I cannot get into its recovery no matter how many times I flash it. Odin just will not recognize my phone when I am in download mode. When my phone is on, it will allow the mass storage and that works but when in download mode, my PC says unrecognized devide. I have a feeling that is the problem and I have updated the drivers several times, especially from Samsung but to no avail. Does someone have a solution to this problem? I want to go to Avatar ROM with my phone which is Jelly Bean and have seen its possible but I feel CWM is holding me back.
Thank you in advance!

Can you explain the steps your taking when you try to get into odin
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda app-developers app
The steps I take is put the phone into download mode by pulling the battery and then holding both the volume up and down then reinsert the battery. It shows the download screen. I then start odin and I have tried version 1.7 and the latest version of 3.0.7. Then I plug my phone into the USB port and windows pops up saying unrecognized device. I have reinstalled drivers several times. Now to describe my desktop is that it is a pentium III 550 Mhz...and old computer and running Windows XP Professional. I am able to do the mass storage when the phone is on normally so it recognizes it that way though. I have tried different USB ports on it as well so just unsure. I have rooted the phone and have superuser app access. ROM manager was supposed to have flashed the recovery mode but it never goes into the CWR mode either and its version is 2.5.1.2 which I have seen work on these phones in videos on YouTube so guess I am trying a different route so I can play with the mods to find a ROM I like. I was going to try the Avatar ROM for the vibrant but just cannot seem to get to the point where I can get the ROM flashed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Keep the battery in and lull up Odin. Cut off the phone and hold both volumes while inserting USB hopefully the computer will then recognize it

USB cable does make difference. And USB ports even on the same computer. Check also your phone's drivers. Finally, try out Heimdall one-click package for t959, it is more powerful and sensitive than Odin.

I'm also stuck on cache & I have tried more than one USB cable. Is there something else that I might be doing wrong? I'm completely uninclined technologically. The fact that I got my phone into download mode after 'bricking' is a feat in itself. Now what do I do when I'm stuck??

Great that you could get it to the download mode.
Follow these steps:
1. Make sure that you have the correct drivers installed for your Operating System. Preferably, download the latest drivers. You can verify when your device is recognized when connected in download mode.
2. Make sure you follow this thread for Odin flashing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
3. If unable to flash using ODIN successfully, try with different USB ports, on same computer or a different one, say, a laptop.
4. If still unable to do so, try with different USB cables (any micro-usb should do).
In this way, you should by trying multiple alternatives at each step you should be able to eliminate the options and figure out what is really creating the problem in your flashing. Trust me my friend, this has not go anything to do with technology. just follow the steps, try alternatives and you would resolve this. Do post back on thread, if you have any queries.

Unable to connect with USB

Hello everybody,
I know there are thousands of threads like this, but none of them gives me a solution. If I try to connect my SG2 (Stock ROM) with an USB cable, I get a really annoying message all the time. (Screenshot: http://www.techiesguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/USB-device-not-recognized-1.gif) It's still charging. When I try to install the drivers, I get an error message too. It tries to install drivers through Windows Updates, which doesn't work. Maybe Samsung's old drivers will work... Does someone have them?
My USB port just work. I can use everything else with it. The cable also works, and I've tried several cables. USB Debugging is enabled on my phone.
Things I already tried:
-Install drivers through download mode
-Cleaning up the USB port
-Different USB ports and cables
-Reinstalling drivers/Samsung Kies
-Removing the battery
-Install drivers w/o SIM and SD card
-Manually install drivers
-Soft factory reset
-Samsung Kies' troubleshooting
-USB Mass Storage
I hope somebody knows a solution for this.
Thanks in advance,

Same problem for me, I think my Micro USB Port is broken (I'm pretty sure). Just replace it for ~10$ and you'll be fine

Okay, I'll use another device, and if that one works I can confirm you're right and find a solution for it.
EDIT: You're right. Where can I get one?
Help need ASAP...

I'm using Sentinel Rom with siyah kernel, my phone is not booting up it..shows a battery charging icon that's charging. i have tried all the possibilities that mentioned above , but no use..its says usb not recognized and also not able to go to Recovery mode or Download Mode using the hardware keys..but USB jig works , i was able to go to download mode but PC doesn't detect it odin. So not able to flash the kernel\ROM...
