[Q] Help please! - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 8GB. With only 4GB of actual space, I needed more. I bought a mini-sd card today. I tried to partition it to move app data, but nothing worked. I reformatted the sd card in my tablet and then tried to put it in my pc. Nothing happened except the "external disk found" notification in the task bar. When I clicked it to see the sd card, nothing showed. Screenshot here:

My tablet still reads it perfectly. I tried using the "Format" option on the tablet over and over. When I try it with my pc, nothing happens except that. No drive letter, no notification other than what is shown in the screenshot. I tried about twenty recovery programs and not one could see the sd card. Minitool Partition can see it, but calls it a bad disk and will not allow me to use any operations (cannot delete partition, create, edit). I don't want to buy another sd card so soon. Can ANYONE help me with this?

Try using gparted live cd. If it recognizes it, reformat it to fat32.

You should probably read a bit and do some googling.
Burn the iso to a cd, make sure your bios is set to boot from optical drive, and it should boot fine.

I have. I kept trying and it won't work. I burned the program to three cds and a virtual drive. None worked.
But is there any other way of finding the SD-Card?

Are you sure your downloading the right one?
If its not working you could try formatting it in a camera, or using a Linux distro like Ubuntu. They have gparted built in.

I have no camera. I could borrow one from someone, but that'd be long from now. I was looking for a way to restore the partition and drive letter, but from all the forums I've read, no one has a clue.

Like I said. Gparted will very likely be able to read and format the card. Go find a guide on how to get the livecd working, its your best bet.

The website says that I must run Gparted in the SD-card partition first, which I cannot do. Can't even read the sd card correctly.

What?!?
You download the gparted iso.
Put a CD into your PC
Right click on the iso and burn it to the disc
Put the SD card into your PC
Reboot your PC
Gparted should boot. If not make sure your bios boot sequence boots optical drive first
In gparted your SD card should appear
Format it. MAKE SURE U DONT FORMAT YOUR HARD DRIVE
If gparted doesn't see the card, its probably damaged to a point where no software can fix it, and you will have to buy a new one.

Help please,i can,t use storage card on FRX06

Hello guys,as my title thread ,i,v installed android(FRX06)on my touch pro2 ,it work,s but ,but android can,t see my storage card ,can any body explain me how should i fix it please?
i have already the phisical keyboard problems ,but the imporatante issue for me in storage card for now, thanks.
What do you mean android can't see your sd card? It's running off your sd card so it clearly can see it.
Probably he means that when you go to SD Card options [I forgot the actual name] in Settings, the SD card is considered "not detected" and doesn't show you the remaining capacity of the SD card. If so, I had the same problem when I first put FRX06 a month ago.
What you can do is to do a FULL format using the HP Tool. It needs to be the HP Tool and a FULL format or else it won't work.
I'm guessing you also didn't have your ringtones working while you were at it huh?
Well, give full formatting a try. :]

Thank you very much my friend, your advice was good, now i can see my SD card doing only a quick format with hp tool
Have a very nice day,byeeee
I actually suggest a full format if you want the FRX06 build to work properly. But whatever works for you.
SOLVED.
no SD card
folks, I have the same problem.
I did a FULL FAT32 format to a 512 card.
FRX06 boots and runs smooth, I just "don't have an SD card", you know, for taking photos and stuff.
Do I have to make 2 partitions? or what?
Oh, HP Tool does nothing for me, it doesn't detect my card in my laptop's slot.
Am I weird, or what??
OFFTOPIC but I have no pulldown notification bar either. Nor FRX06 neither Gingerbread ALPHA. (I am using the right calibration file, I compared it with the one attached in the post)
I can get to notifications from home by pressing menu, then I can pull it UP, but not down. HM?????

For the notification bar, try making your own calib file, instructions in the first post.
HP Tool is necessary, or something else other than the built-in Windows/WinMo utilites. If your card reader doesn't work, have you tried using WinMo and the phone in 'mass storage' mode so it just shows up as another disk drive in My Computer?
Notification bar was a question of calibration. Thx.
As for the SD card, it is visible in my desktop, a can format it in several ways, except for HP Tool, that doesn't recognize it. Is being not visible in Android a question of formatting really?

Unless you figure out some other way, yes it is a question of formatting really.
What do you mean you can 'format it several ways' if the HP Tool doesn't see it? Are you sure you're doing it correctly?
I can format it with Total commander, regular rightclick format in windows, etc, but HP Tool doesn's handle it. It is win7, it's in my cardreader slot shown as secure digital card in windows. I run HPtool as admin, of course, starts up but the pull down options stay dimmed. How should I format it? Wouldn't HPTool format it just FAT32 too?

It's not that the Windows utility doesn't format as FAT32 - my theory is it doesn't touch the partition table, and something gets hosed with it.
I've had TONS of people that were skeptical it would do anything (especially since you can backup all your data and restore) but every single one of them said it fixed the "No SD Card" issue in apps.
Figure out the issue with the HP Tool, it works great for me. I used it in Win7 as well, but I don't have a Win7 box handy to test on - I do know that it works on Win7 tho.
Edit - perhaps try the SD card inserted into the phone in WinMo & use mass storage mode? Not sure why it wouldn't show up in the HP Tool, gotta try something different.

Yes, as does GParted - which probably does the same command thru a pretty GUI .
With the phone connected, the sd card being a disk drive HPTool recognizes it, and after formatting I DO HAVE an SD card. ) Thx

That is correct - gparted is basically a frontend to the various Linux partition and filesystem management tools - mkfs, resize2fs, fdisk, etc.

We have another believer .
Not sure if it has been said if it has my bad. But it seems you are trying to do the FAT32. download the HP tools. then when you plug in your device pick the disk drive option that will set it as if it was a thumb drive then run HP tools and for me it was my F: drive sorry if its not a help

Want to install CM7 , should i get 2 SD card or just one ? I am on 1.4.1

Since i am on 1.4.1 , i couldnt able to root via .apk installation method , which is blocked on 1.4.1
Today i am going to purchase a microSD card to root and install CM7 or CM9 (anything other than stock ROM). Many tutorials i read says that i have to format the SD card to make it as bootable Rooter or something. My question is
- Do i need 2 SD cards , one to root and another as external storage ?
- Or 1 is enough to root and install , then later reformat it to use it as external storage for nook ?
- Which method / tutorial should i follow ? CM7 threads says to look at rooting and CMW installation threads . But these thread are little confusing me on SD card part.
Can anyone give an idea on how to proceed ? Again i am on 1.4.1 , unrooted , STOCK ROM and dont have a microSD card yet , going to buy today , so how much should i buy or 1 is enough to get me on CM7
Need urgent reply , as i am leaving to buy stuffs
I think there's only one micro sd port, so you'll only want to get one micro sd. There's no reason to get two. Just get the largest one you can buy. That's what I did. 32GB micro sd with CM7 installed. Afterward you'll need to run a partition program to resize the last partition to use up the entire space of the card. I ran into a little issue with that with windows partition program and have to boot ubuntu and run gparted.
I've rooted, booted in recovery, stored apps and media, flashed different mods and roms, and booted another NT into recovery all from the same 32gb card. Hope that answers your question. i personally wouldn't go with anything less than 16gb of space just due to the fact that anything else seems a bit of a waste of the sd card slot. IMO not the law
One sd card is sufficient for rooting the device. It really depends on how you want to root it now, internally (so you can use the internal memory but lose stock os) or bootable sd card (easier to revert but everything will be stored on the sd card)
Thanks for all the reply. Had some work come up , so didnt find time.
anyway got a 8GB card, is that enough ? i am not planning to watch movies on it.
I am planning to give this nook to my brother later , so i dont want to mess up with the stock OS. Can i root/install cm7 right from the SD card itself ? and if i remove , will the stock OS be intact ?
Also please let me know how to revert (once rooted/installed and if it did change the internal stock OS) back to stock OS.
With SD card , can i skip the registration process of stock OS ? recently i restored to factory setting , and i dont want it to update OTA to 1.4.1 and above if i am again going to go through the process . the device has not been turned on for a while.
help me here guys

You should make a CM7 SD card, directions can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826
This way, when you put the SD card in and boot up, you will boot into CM7.
When you take the SD card out and boot up, you will boot into the untouched Barnes and Noble stock ROM.

After you write the .img to your card and after you extend the last partition of your SD card, you should have about 5.5GB for user data storage.
I don't believe you have to register your NT.
To be on the safe side, I would definitely recommend that you use an SD adapter when writing the image, but you should be able to do it when the card is inside of your NT, but mounted on your computer.

Alright, come back if you run into any problems.
I am just downloading the image file.
Planning to skip the registration process with that trick and load the sd card > connect it to system and burn the image on the SD card.
Hope it works
I skipped the registration process and inserted the SD card and currently running the disk imager to write that image file to h: (SD CARD)
hope i am doing it right.
It worked !!!!!
here is the storage details :
SD CARD
total : 1.3GB
Avail :1.3GB
Internal :
Total : 1.3
Avail : 1.17
Additional storage : /system
unvailable
Additional Storage : mnt/storage
Unvailable
Additional storage : /mnt/media
T : 1GB
A : 1GB
ok how to extend the partition now ? Also is there anything i should remember regarding these mnt/storage and /media ? I mean moving apps , stuffs like that ?
Okay, so the 4th partition is the only partition you want to change. If running Windows, download and install either:
Minitool Partition Wizard: http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html
OR
EASEUS Partition Master: http://www.partition-tool.com/download.htm
Doesn't matter which, they're basically the same software.
Mount the SD card and remember the letter drive for your SD card (very important!)
You should see 4 partitions on your SD card drive, followed by unallocated space. Select the 4th partition and choose Move/Resize. From here you should be able to extend that partition to consume the rest of the unallocated space.
Now, double check to make sure the changes you made to your SD card are correct. When you are satisfied, hit Apply, and wait for the changes to take place.
When it's finished close to software and mount the SD card on your NT and check the storage settings again to make sure you are able to use the rest of your space.
As you know , i have been using nook to mount the SD card. Will this work with my setting ?
also when i try to mount this is what it shows

Open up one of the partitioning softwares and make sure your J: Drive has 4 partitions on it. If not, then you'll need to mount your SD card on the PC with an adapter or card reader.

i cant figure it out. I mounted and it is showing this . And J: is shown as BAD DISK
may be i should use an adapter.. or am i doing something wrong ?

meanwhile , is there any way i can install B&N reader ? i am outside of U.S .
The Nook app is available in the Play Store.
If you mean the Barnes and Noble stock reading app, I believe you can extract the app from the stock ROM. The app is simply called Reader, and should be listed in /system/app.

[How-to] S-Off ext SD Fix (With Screenshots)

Hmm, never got that before. Do you have your device mounted as Charge only? Also may reboot the device see if that resolves it.. Last would be to run it through the terminal emulator on the phone (that is how I fixed mine the first time, its a pain but it worked).
When doing it through the terminal emulator on the phone though you do not need to use the adb shell command, just the busybox commands.

First time (when I ran it on my phone) I was on the ICS leak. When I took the screenshots for this post I had downgraded to the GB RUU so I could install the eng hboot.
I'll add this to my OP in the S-Off Instructions thread. Thanks a lot.

Did you format the SD card at the end? Don't have a screenshot for that one since I had already got mine working but if no errors happened, you should be able to click on the notification that states "Blank SD Card" and choose format and it should format then mount.
Edit: Just modified OP for step 13.
yes i did, my phone said the sd was blank and i formatted it, it said checking sd card, then preparing sd card, but when i plug it into the computer if only shows the internal sd card as a few kilobytes and no ext sd comes up, on my rom i open the camera and it says insert and ad card to use the camera
edit: just tried running it again and on the last step i get cant open /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 no such file or directory

it seems that recovery sees it, windows certainly does when i format it using windows, the phone just cant see it, and the rom im using isnt helping as the settings to storage are force closing so i cant get into them but the camera still says to insert and sd card, im going to try and format the card using my thunderbolt real quick and see if that helps, ill post back and let you know

im actually having the same problem right now.... im running the 2.01.605.11 firmware using scotts clean rom de 1.2 with the firmware patch. it wouldnt install anything onto the sd card so i rebooted to recovery unmounted sd card and remounted it. enabled usb-ms and made a back up of my sd card, rebooted and tried the fix and i get the same issues the other guy does....

I would try a couple things if you haven't already gotten this resolved. If showing in recovery I would try to re-apply the firmware patch. If that does not work I would try a clean install of your ROM once more. Looks like the other issue was resolved by a different ROM, so it would be a suggestion (if the card shows in recovery) to try at least a clean install of the same ROM.

Still no go
I have tried again tonight to give the sd card fix a try. Formatted sd card with windows and ran fix. After typing w the outcome was Fdisk: WARNING rereading partition table failed: Kernel still uses old table: device or resource busy
Hope that give an idea for an answer.. Thanks
FYI..my phone won't install busybox (Stericson) cause of sd card not mounted or not reading. Had to use jrummy's. I tried to force busy box to work through my rom with titanium but that didn't work.
My sd card works in ra recovery. When I go into root explorer sdcard2 is in read only. Is there a way to change that?

Hmm shows in recovery but R/O in root explorer.. I would try a couple things. First, if it shows in recovery, what firmware are you? If your on the GB firmware I would try the patch released (you can find it in almost all ICS ROM posts). If that does not work I would next try to format the SD Card in recovery, (not sure if that will work but I have heard that formatting in Windows fixed some so its worth a try). Last I would try flashing a new ROM (not saying you have to stay on it but another fix I have heard is new ROM).
If none of those work, I would grab another SD Card and try running to fix to see if maybe there is an issue with the SD card.

i have success.. i'm guessing the main fix was flashing newts rc2. that was the original rom i was on when i did the s-off. i lost my data on sd after using the external sd card fix. so didn't have a back up. i had cleanrom 3.7 on laptop and that is what i flashed to try to fix the first time(different rom which i thought would fix). so glad to be normal again.. exept with data loss which i didn't have much.. thanks for you patience and help
i can't believe the fix was that simple..what a trip..lol

[TUTORIAL][GUIDE] Get Apps to SD Card L9

This is obviously the most frustrating thing that we all want to do on the L9 (I have the P769 v20h T-Mobile ROOTED). This should work on all L9's. After tons of research I finally figured out a working method through multiple threads. There's methods with DirectoryBind and BusyBox scripts to mount but those were honestly confusing to me and I didn't understand how to operate those.
First off your phone MUST BE ROOTED. If your phone is not rooted here is a thread that will explain to you how to root, the software is chinese but I promise you it works.
Required Items:
Rooted L9
SD Card
Steps:
1.) I repeat you MUST be rooted
2.) Backup your SD cards files on your computer because you will be formatting the SD card.
3.) We must partition the SD Card into two parts. You can do this by downloading any SD card partitioner app but I used AParted.
3a.) Before you can do anything in the "Aparted" app you have to unmount your SD card. You can do this by going to your system settings. Then go to "Storage" then down at the bottom you will see "Unmount SD Card". Click that.
3b.) Now go into AParted. Click on the "TOOLS" tab at the top. You should only have one partition called "Part 1". Checkmark Part 1 and choose delete down at the bottom.
3c.) You now have a completely formatted SD card.
4.) Create TWO FAT32 partitions by going to the "TOOLS" tab at the top. The first partition is considered your SD card so this is where you would store personal pictures and music, etc from your computer. The second partition is where all the apps and apps data will be moved to. So make sure you appropriately size your partitions. Since I keep a fair sum of music I have a 8GB SD card and made the first partition 1.5GB and used the remaining space for Partition 2.
4a.) To make the partition click checkmark part 1 then click create. Under File System choose "Fat32". Make sure to only use whatever space you will need to store music, etc... Do this by changing the "Size" 1000 is equal to a gigabyte. So if you have a 4GB SD card then you can make this first partition 1500 or 2000 (1.5GB or 2GB) but you have to leave space. Now Click ok.
4b.) Now to make partition 2. Checkmark "Part 2" and click create. Under the file system choose "fat32" again. This time dont change the size, just use the remaining space that it shows and click ok.

}
5.)Now download the app called "Link2SD"
6.) Once you open the app it will scan a list of all your apps.
View attachment 2306959
7.) BE CAREFUL with which apps you choose to move, I would say limit yourself to only moving the apps you've downloaded such as ESPN, Netflix, Games, etc...
8.) Choose the program you want to move to your SD card, I chose Cut the Rope.
9.) Click the "Create Link" button
10.) Make sure all three options are check-marked (Link Application Files, Link Dalvik-cache Files, Link Library Files)
11.) It will finish and you can proceed to link any apps you desire to the SD card, you can go into your system apps and see how much free space is available so you know it worked. You can see on mine I have much more than 339MB used.
If this helped please give thanks

I respect your opinion, but the reason I did not mention LGPwn was because on the newest firmware update on the T-Mobile version of the P769 which is v20h (released September 13 I think) the LGPwn method no longer works and the Chinese software was the only root method that worked with v20h.
This looks pretty legit hopefully this works. Ive been trying everything to free up some space on this phone.
Weird. LGPwn worked on v20h for me. There are a few different models of P769s out there.

I'm having some troubles here im doing doing what you are saying and nothing seems to work. Can you please tell me what to do more specifically because i feel like you are missing some parts.
So i have my phone rooted with LGpwn and ofcourse i tried it and it didn't work says like "Failure..."
So how do i go about to root with the chinese software do i have to unroot my L9 and how do i do that?

Where is the problem occurring? The main part I'm missing in here is how to delete the partition. You have to unmount the SD card before you can perform any deletion of the partition.

I feel like the same issue for you is the mounting. I'll edit my main post and add those steps. You have to go to settings>storage>SD card> Unmount SD Card. Then you goto the Aparted app and goto the tools tab to delete everything on your SD card. Then you create the two partitions with the free space

Of course. I'm glad too help. Be careful with games like CSR Racing which is like 200MB where they download extra files because it looks like those extra files don't link to the SD card. I'm working on figuring it out though.

LGPwn only roots. It doesn't do anything regarding putting apps on sd card. Follow the instructions in the OP and you should be fine.

Yeah, just wanted you to clarify that all it does is root. It isn't an alternative for this process of getting apps on your sd.
Dumb question... Since I'm dearly new in this. Will getting that extra space on phone improve its performance?

Question
Why would you use 2 fat 32 partitions as opposed to making an ext3 or ext4 and linking like you would do on a lower end phone?

Not likely. Depending on the class of your sd card it could even slightly negatively impact your apps that are loaded on the sd card. It's worth any nominal change in speed to be able to get the apps to the SD card as otherwise this phone is definitely handcuffed by a small internal storage limit.
I actually tried ext4 and after I partitioned the phone wouldn't even read my SD.
Also I tried to use link2SD with a second fat32 but link2sd said it didn't support my phone. Is it cause I rooted with lgpwn?

How to unbrick your SM-G7102

The following guide will get you back to where you should be able to odin everything back to stock.
What you need:
16GB or 32GB microSD card (all data will be erased from this sdcard)
microSD card reader
Linux Live Disc, Windows can be used, instructions below.
One of the following images based on your software
4.4 NG4 SM-G7102 https://mega.co.nz/#!RJoH2Iga!xs1M6721DeFZY_bDWEmAacf2ai_KKpl_EUwkgeuIBPY
How to get it done:
Linux Instructions
Boot your Linux OS
Download the debrick image listed in the Item's needed list
Open terminal on your Linux OS
Insert your microSD card into the reader
Plug your microSD card reader into your computer
Run
Code:
dmesg | tail
you should see something that mentions where it is mounted via /sdX
*
Code:
dd if=/path_to_debrick.img of=/dev/sdX
again where X is the microSD card ignoring the partition numbers as they should be overwritten
I had to do this a couple times for the image to actually take
*
Code:
parted /dev/sdX print
If you will see Error about the GPT table being corrupt you can type "OK" and then you will be given an option to Fix/Ignore; type "Ignore"
should show approximately 23 partitions (IIRC)
Windows Instructions
Download win32diskimager
Download your debrick image
Unzip both items and run win32diskimager
Run win32diskimager
browse for your extracted debrick image
Select your microSD in the dropdown box
Click write
Instructions required for both
remove the microSD card from the reader
remove the battery, sim and external microSD card from your device
insert your debrick microSD into your phone
insert the battery and down your power button (at this point your phone might actually boot completely and you can recovery any software/data you want)
reboot into Download mode either via adb or Volume Down + Home + Power
Once the device is booted into bootloader remove the microSD card.
follow the directions in the ODIN thread and make sure you UNCHECK partition!
* requires su privileges
Once you have your device booting with the SDcard, youll need to flash the stock odin firmware which you can get from samfirmware.com. make sure you flash teh version or a newer one than what you had, you cannot downgrade.
