Got the HTC one a few hours ago, had it unlocked from HTCDev.com in less than 30 minutes. Easy Peasy.
Now I'm trying to root it and life is a bit more complicated.
I followed the twrp guide from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2236620
which is the sprint thread (linked from typing in twrp htc one in google)
I've installed TWRP 2.5.0.0 and I can boot into it.
When I go to hit reboot - system it prompts me to install SU and root.
I click yes - nothing happens just goes black and reboots.
I tried rooting manually by flashing a .zip, but I can't access /data or /sdcard. They won't mount.
Any suggestions on how to get the sdcard or /data mounted? May try CWM instead...

Download the correct SU script and flash it via recovery. Forget where I got mine though.

Didn't want to hijack that other thread, so I thought a more explicity thread might help others.
So I followed http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=iMYMR3_Vk8I and got my phone unlocked. I'm unsure what to do next to get a "stock" phone rooted. All I want is to have my phone rooted so I can run SU apps. There are a couple options from the tool, of which I'm not sure what is what:
1. Flash a Recovery (TWRP 2.1) - Not sure what this is for, should I flash it? What does it do?
2. Kernels - Do I download a kernel like: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762537 and Flash Kernel?
3. Perm Root - From the name this sounds like what I want... but can I run it on my freshly restored/unlocked phone? Do I need to run this after one of the above (or both) steps?
1. Yes. A recovery is, put simply, a tool that can be used to flash things to your phone (e.g. custom ROMs and mods). You will need a recovery in order to achieve permanent root, so flashing the recovery is definitely a good idea.
2. The thread that you linked to does not contain a kernel, it contains a custom ROM. Since we do not have any customized kernels for this phone yet, skip the flash kernel step entirely. You may want to go back and use it if a kernel is developed that you prefer, but for now, there are no kernels to flash.
3. Perm root is the step that you want, but you need to flash the recovery first. The perm root script will run and then eventually boot you into the recovery, which you must use to flash SuperSU.zip which is the package that gives you root on your current ROM.

Thanks polarimetric for explaining! Hopefully your explanations and my slight quirks below can help some others.
The TWRP reflash worked fine. I had an issue with the Perm Root though... for some reason the SuperSU.zip wasn't actually getting copied over to the phone before it was rebooted into recovery. I ended up mounting the sdcard and manually copying over SU/SuperSU.zip to my sdcard. At that point I ran Perm Root again (which in my case just reboots into recovery). From there I clicked "Install" and selected the /sdcard/SuperSU.zip file. It installed and rebooted.
Successfully rooted!
More advice pleae.

I flashed a recovery yesterday since I needed to recover. After that my endlessly booting appliance booted successfully.
Now I want to Root. I tried this using the Hasoon2000 thing yet and got a "Simply Brilliant" screen when I rebooted into recovery but then got could not connect message when I tried to permanently root.
Do I need to flash a different recovery?
Wow, this thread got my hopes up til I saw it was bumped.

Yeah, the same thing happened to me. I tried HTCDev unlock last night and it didn't work, so I was very surprised to see that as the most recent post. Now I'm extremely disappointed.

HTC Dumlock Instructions:
Install the build of TWRP using your method of choice, but you must actually flash TWRP to recovery. No fastboot booting it. We need it in recovery so that this build of TWRP will be flashed to your boot. This new build of TWRP has features in it to easily restore your original boot.
Reboot into recovery.
Make a backup of your phone.
Tap Advanced.
Tap HTC Dumlock. (If you don't see HTC Dumlock then you need to remove any custom TWRP theme that you might be using.)
Tap Install HTC Dumlock. This will install the app and binaries needed to make everything work nicely.
Reboot your device.
Find and open the HTC Dumlock app.
If/when prompted, give the app root (SuperUser) permissions.
Tap the Execute HTC Dumlock button.
Wait patiently for a couple of minutes. It takes a little while.
If your device doesn't reboot automatically, reboot it manually. Reboot it normally. DO NOT reboot it to recovery.
You should now be in your recovery, but your recovery is flashed into boot.
Tap Advanced.
Tap HTC Dumlock.
Tap Restore Original Boot.
Use your recovery like normal. Flash a new kernel. Restore a backup with a different kernel. Do whatever you please!

Boot into HBOOT then Fastboot

Weird I am unable to have any zips show up here so I can flash them.. any idea why nothing shows up in TWRP?

I just tried using adb sideload and it transferred the rom zip, and the rom looked like it was installing, it even said it was installed. However, when I went to reboot, TWRP says 'are you sure no OS installed?' sure enough, i got stuck at the HTC One screen for a long time afterwards. The rom installed fine with adb push, then installing it. Just wondering if this is me or other people experience it.

Idk about this phone but did you make sure the boot.img was installed. Try flashing manually the boot.img.
Can anyone help please.I flashed twrp v 2.5.0.0 but I think I checked fast boot in power for some reason . Now twrp is giving me some problems like it doesn't recognise my internal storage and can't flash supersu or superu ,so my device is still unrooted. Could anybody tell me what should I do now? Hello everyone... I really like the way TWRP works even though the backup files seem to be proprietary. I especially like the way the wipe area allows you to select other specific items under "advanced." One question I have though is this... is the "fix permissions" option working for everyone? Would this not work on certain ROMs? I am just curious. Thanks for your insight!

It should work as long your bootloader is unlock.
Really didn't want to make a new thread about this but honestly people just jumped to conclusions without being helpful in my previous thread.

I saw that I needed to get s-off, which requires root. Bootloader was already unlocked and so did everything here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2273376
I installed CWM. It said to install a superuser tool so I installed SuperSU.
"You're not out of the woods yet! The stock kernel is system write protected, so you still can't modify it (changes won't "stick"). You'll have to flash a custom rom or a kernel if you want stock instead." was the next line. <-- I saw that message. After reboot I get SuperSU error: There is no SU binary installed and SuperSU cannot install it. If you just upgraded to Android 4.3, you need to manually re-root- consult the relevant forums for your device etc.
Can anyone help me get the proper SU Binary installed? Not a beginner to rooting as I've had had several previous phones before. Never encountered something as annoying as this.
On 4.3, 3.17.502.3.
I had the same issue when I installed 4.4.2 on my international One.
What I done to root was;
- downloaded SuperSU v1.80 zip from here.
- download SuperSu from the Play Store
- in SuperSU, select the option to install binaries via TWRP/CWM. (If it doesn't reboot to recovery, manually enter recovery)
- flash the supersu v1.80 zip and reboot
- open SuperSu and install the binaries using the normal option.
That then enabled my root. I'd tried quite a few different variations and this was the only method that worked for me.

Is there a way to get into stock recovery from fastboot? Or better yet install the ROM from fastboot?

You seem very confused about the whole rooting process ... what was the point in flashing the stock recovery ? Are you trying to install the OTAPkg.zip ?
what Rom are you wanting to install and whats flashing stock recovery have to do with it ?

and yes it is necessary to have stock recovery to take an OTA, but your post didn't mention taking OTA it said you had no SU installed.
to get into stock recovery
boot to bootloader
choose recovery
wait for black screen, hold vol up and then power
you will see something about sdcard fail .. ignore it till the menu comes up
then choose to flash OTAPkg.zip from sdcard
i followed the instructions on the CyanogenMod wiki (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_jewel) to install CM 10.2 on my EVO 4G LTE.
i am able to launch TWRP 2.7.0.8 and receive a notice that CM 10.2 flashes successfully but when i try to reboot into the system, i see the white htc screen, the screen goes black and the whole thing just repeats itself until the battery dies or i get back into recovery and shut down.
there is a note at the bottom that says " if unlocked with HTCDev Unlock, must have its kernel flashed via fastboot." since i used the instructions on that page, i assumed this didn't apply to me, otherwise it would have been included within the instructions.
i have installed CM on my old captivate and my Nexus 7 successfully, so i have done this before by following instructions, but am at a loss as to what happened this time. any tips would be greatly appreciated!
If you're S-on you have to flash the kernel separately from the ROM. Hit the top link in my sig and scroll down to the section on S-on kernel flashing for more info.

thanks for your quick reply. can i use TWRP to flash the kernel? i can copy the boot.img to my external sd card and then flash from there. i am unable to push files using adb.(not sure where the problem is. i installed sync but do not have media player 11 installed so maybe that's the problem)

No, you can't use TWRP, at least not for flashing in recovery. You do have a few options, though. You can use the paid app Flash Image GUI from the Play Store, use the TWRP Dumlock feature (link can be found in my guide), or get S-off (your best bet). There is a link in my guide on how to set up ADB on your computer, so maybe that will get you headed in the right direction.

flashed boot.img to the phone. still was unable to push the modified zip via adb but was able to mount the phone in recovery so i copied the zip, reflashed and all works!

My Padfone S screen is broken, fully black and out of function. I can't follow the some of the root guide to install TWRP and load the SuperSU zip to it because the screen is broken. I can just use my Padfone with the padfone station, so is there any way to root it? Thanks.
I did my Padfone X about an hour ago! I realize its not the same, but I'll give you a run-down of what I did and maybe it will help!
So I rooted it the dirty way first with KingoRoot, because I just really wanted to debloat. Downloaded the app, nothing complicated about it, I just don't like it and personally I don't trust this root provider for a daily driver. Prefer SuperUser or SuperSU.
Next, I spent a long while poring over threads full of dead links trying to find a CWM or TWRP recovery, and finally stumbled across one, which also contained the flashable bootloader unlocker. So I put the phone in fastboot mode (power the phone off, hold power + vol up) and ran "fastboot boot recovery.img", which is what I renamed the TWRP recovery file to. To my surprise, it booted and mounted the internal storage! So I copied the bootloader unlocker zip, flashed it, rebooted. Entered fastboot again, "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" and boom! TWRP installed and working.
My next step will be to replace KingoRoot with SuperSU. I tried it via the normal flashable zip, but it failed somehow. The flash completed but when I rebooted, the SU binaries were missing or something. I lost root access. Good thing that the backup and restore works in TWRP
I'll post a full "how I did it" guide when I'm done. Until then, hopefully something I learned will help you!
