[Q] Please help, I am having multiple issues and can find no information on them - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Look I'm sorry if I broke one of the 500 rules here, I am just desperately in search of help.
I have been a smart phone owner since 2009. I bought an iphone 3. I upgraded to a 3gs eventually, then last summer got my first note.
I went through five iphones because I kept sending them back due to various issues. I thought Android would be great and fix all my issues, but honestly I hate my phone and I just want a smartphone that works. Like I said I bought my first one in 2009 and I have just been trying to have a fully functional smartphone ever since and it is something I have never gotten to experience. Four years! Jesus, I just want one that works and doesn't give me random issues everytime I try to use it.
So my note is running android 4.0.4 I am going to list various issues I am having with it in the next post. I would do it in this post but I had it all typed up then this page just turned blank and I lost what I typed. I have no idea why.

Please keep in mind I have owned five Notes. I have sent them back for various issues, but these problems have persisted across all of them.
1. If I am using a web browser in landscape mode and go about ten seconds without touching the screen or buttons, the right side of the screen flashes black repeatedly.
2. When I use the default audio player the last song I picked automatically starts playing. It used to not autostart the music. How can I disable this?
3. When I am in an app and press home, sometimes after the app minimizes it comes right back up instead of going to the home screen. Why?
4. How come sometimes when I go to unlock my phone, the clock is in the middle instead of the top, which is what I have it set to?
5. When I attempt to download an image off the internet through any of the five browsers I have installed about 50% of the time the download fails regardless of 4G or wifi connection strength. How can I fix this?
6. Sometimes when I click a link on a webpage, the page jumps to another part of the webpage and activates a random link from that area. Wtf?
7. If I close every running app, disable every unrequired service and turn my screen brightness down all the way, I cannot use my browser and charge my phone at the same time without the battery draining quicker than it charges. How can I browse the web and charge my battery at the same time?
8. If I click up by issue #5 or #6 to edit something, this website scrolls the edit box all the way up to the top. The only way I can get back down to where I am typing this is to drag the text selection tool. Kind of annoying.
9. My lock screen setting is set to auto lock after ten minutes because I prefer to manually lock my phone when I'm done using it, not use auto lock. When I get a phone call this setting is overidden and the screen locks after ten seconds of inactivity following a phone call. How can I get my phone to always respect the value I selected for that setting rather than some of the time?

10. the default camera app has an option to set custom shortcuts. This is a useful feature. However every time I exit the application the shortcuts are reset to default, making that feature worthless. How can I set custom shortcuts permanently?

What's the common denominator among all these devices(ip*/sammy)?

Ok I hate to be the one to say this but you will never find anything that will not have random issues. This is the way of smartphones. While One device may run perfectly the same device and the same OS version will have random issues.
Also might want to look into something called a logcat. It will help you find the issues you see

They all feel like a waste of money?

let me see if I can either answer or help you clarify what's needed to solve these issues.
First are you stock unrooted? running a custom rom? Rooted?
(each of the following number correlate with the issues you listed):
1) Stock web browser or all of the one's you've tried? By flashes black, does half the screen start flashing black then back to what's being displayed quickly?
2) the playing the last song if I recall is a restart "function" that the player does, check in the settings for that. Maybe someone else can answer this as I don't use my phone as an MP3 player, just pandora.
3) I've had this happen from time to time with my phone as well. I've noticed that it happens with memory intensive programs. I just hit the home button again. Don't know what to tell you there
4) Are you referring to the clock on your lock screen or status bar?
5) Is this issue one specific image? is it from one given website? have you tried dolphin browser? I can tell you that it does work on my phone from google front page.
6) This happens to me as well, it's annoying and I feel your pain. It happens to me when I go to click a link when I have my keyboard open which resizes and moves the webpage and then activates the click in the new location. Is this similar to your issue?
7) Are you using the charger that came with the phone or a charger that pipes 1A to the device for charging? a lot of chargers our there will only do 500mA and a lot of cables will limit the charging to speed to 500mA because they aren't shorted for full power charging. Though someone should correct me if I'm wrong here.
8) Editing likes to jump around, mainly due to what I mentioned in response to 6 because it closes and reopens the keyboard. Again that's from my experience. this has been limited when I moved to swiftkey and a JB rom.
9) I have no clue about this one. and have no idea what to tell you. I'd say play in the settings for this one.

You kindly asked for help, so I’ll kindly try my best.
1. I have NEVER heard of anything like this. So you say this happened on different Notes? That is akward. I wonder if a different dpi setting will cure this for ya. If your rooted you can install xposed and change individual app dpi’s This will also aid in resolving your #8 issue.
2. This is a normal setting in default audio players. I suggest GoneMad audio player. It has TONS of features and device controls to solve this for ya.
3. I noticed this problem once before. I believe it’s an animation lag. I never seen it happen if I turn off transition animations. Try that and repost back.
4. This sounds like a governor issue. The cpu frequency drops when phone is locked. When it wakes up it lags and the clock doesn’t pop back to where it’s suppose to be. I notice this a LOT when I rotate from portrait to landscape while lockscreen is up.
5. When your image downloads fail, what’s going on with the phone? Same with when they do download. Is anything else running? Is screen locked at all during the download?
6. I notice this happening with different individual webpages. Sometimes a webpage will have an advertisement that slowly loads at the top or side. When it does eventually load the screen elongates which moves the spot we were on. But of course this always happens right when we’re clicking a link! Could this possibly be what’s happening to you?
7. Are you using the stock supplied usb cable and charger plug? Aftermarket chargers have different output voltages. If your using a cheapO it will only charge when not doing anything. And even then it’s still slow to charge!
8. Our phones aren’t the greatest for typing LONG paragraphs or replies. I changed my keyboard dpi so it’s a lil smaller. It gave me more room in landscape mode to see what’s above and I can scroll thru what I wrote easier. That’s not a perfect solution but it helps!
9. I believe this problem is a default security issue. I remember reading somewhere that a phone is set to lock after a phone call because our face could be touching it and press something it shouldn’t. Also that if you were to give your phone to someone to make a phone call having the phone unlocked could be a security breach to you. When you think about it for a second it’s not a bad feature afterall! I’ve given my phone to a coworker during a call and I wouldn’t want him playing with my phone for a second! But when the boss is on the phone with me and wants to talk to whom I’m standing beside I let him! Your problem could be solved with a newer release of JellyBean. I notice a setting in my phone that says "Exit to last activity on end call" which will allow phone to exit to the previous activity screen on end call rather than going to call log and locking.
10. This problem makes me think that you might of tweeked something you shouldn’t of. Why else would an app not remember it’s settings you stored? If it’s not a tweek issue, you can try installing a different camera app. There’s literally 100’s!
Sorry if those responses are of no help. I’m no expert they are just my thoughts on your issues. Good luck!

no worries I completely understand the pain of having an issue and feeling like I'm the only one EVER to deal with it.
SO don't hate me for these next set of recommendations, it's just all part of the troubleshooting process. What I would do is a full factory reset. I mean wipe everything, and I do mean everything because I'm almost suspecting it could be a rogue app causing at least some of your issues. I believe you can revert all the way back to GB (someone will correct me if I'm wrong, it is the internet after all). then without installing anything at all try the stock web browser see if it still flashes and jumps around. If it does well it's what some Microsoft programs like to call a "feature". as for your power consumption issue. try installing this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.manor.currentwidget&hl=en . it isn't perfectly accurate, but it should tell you close to what your amperage that's going into your phone, which should be around 1000ma (or 1A). I know the issue you're referring to and it happens to me when I use the GPS on my truck using my truck adapter which is only 500mA. battery just drops and drops and drops.
After you've done all that and still don't have the desired results, flash ICS and try again.
Lastly I hate the browsing system on these phones as well. you can clearly tell it's a simulated multitasking system and it won't even load multiple pages at the same time and if you switch between the tabs it'll refresh the page and redownload it. Annoying as crap especially when you're trying to watch some pr0n. But it is much better than on my ipod touch so I deal with it. Where I guess I differ from a lot of people who buys this phone is I think of it as a place to get my emails, phone calls and look something up to prove something wrong. I don't feel a smartphone has really become a laptop or netbook replacement yet.
I hope these steps help. If all else fails and you're still having issues, maybe this phone just won't do what you want it to do. I know, I know that a phone should do what it advertises but when it doesn't live up to it, it's time to step to a different device. The S4 was just released and the HTC One is supposed to be a smokin phone too. And with the documented cases of issues you've been having I bet they'd be more than happy to get you to a different device without having to pay full price.
Again I hope these help.

Well explain how this happens:
- Three iphones in a row had an issue with getting dust under the screen. At the time I had an office job, so the phone saw clean slacks pockets and my desk at home, nothing else. The first time it happened they did a screen replacement first and the problem persisted. I never exposed them to extreme environments, never dropped them, nothing.
-I have had the audio port on my Note fail on three different Notes. I use headphones maybe once or twice a week, and when I drive I sometimes plug it up to my tape adapter. They are never subjected to unreasonable force, I never jam the plug in there or anything etc.
-I have had iphones and Notes run at about 30-50% overall speed as the others I have tried, when they are 100% fresh straight from the factory and have not had a single 3rd party app installed or anything.
-I have PC components from the 80's, a circa 2000 HDD based MP3 player from iriver I even used while skateboarding, an original NES and gameboy, the original Razor and countless other electronic devices that have performed flawlessly in the time that I have owned them.
Seriously, explain to me how it is my fault that all five galaxy notes I have tried fail to download a simple image file no matter how good my connection is.
Explain to me why every email application I have used on any smartphone, ios or droid, is so ****ing slow that after hitting refresh inbox I can switch to my browser, open my email providers page, type in my login infox and open my mailbox quicker than the app. Explain why its my fault I can refresh my inbox when I expect mail, see nothing, refresh it again immediately, then have it download five emails from an hour ago. What did I do wrong?
Explain to me why a week ago my phone decided I can't upload images due to "insufficient memory" despite having changed no settings, added no new apps etc. Explain to me what else I can do after resetting the phone, deleting chromes cache, manually stopping and disabling every non essential app that was running, clearing all running processes, clearing ram and resizing the photo. Explain to me why after all that I still cannot upload that photo with Chrome or any other browser, but I can intentionally run as many apps as I can at once, then upload the full size, unedited photo with an imgur app and it goes through no problem. How is that my fault?
How is it my fault that my battery dropped 5% in the time it took me to type this with screen brightness cranked to a minimum, no other apps running, wifi bluetooth and gps disabled and my phone plugged in to a known good outlet with factory wdapters? How is this my fault that I cannot use my phone and charge it at the same time?
How is it my fault that the camera app will not keep my shortcuts?
How is it my fault that a week ago, my music playing application decided to do the following: I pick x song off y album and let it play through a few songs. Q song, the fifth one in the album, is currently playing. I decide I want to listen to another artist. I unlock my phone and go back to the app while the song is still playing. As soon as I open the app it stops the current song and restarts the last song I opened, closing out song Q for song X. It never did that before. I changed no settings. What did I do wrong?
I have a total of maybe five apps I've even downloaded since getting this phone. A 1mb< notepad app, chrome, a sketchbook program and pdanet. All except the last were straight from googles store.
I just dont know. I feel like I paid 500$ for pure, condensed frustration that fits conveniently into my pocket. Every other electronic device I own does what it is supposed to. My PS3 doesnt decide to just stop working. My Wii is a tank. My car is a champ. My digital cameras are workhorses. What is so difficult about obtaining a functional smartphone?
I am A+ and Network+ certified. I know the basically means jack ****, but I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to electronics. I know how to take care of them, I know how to teoubleshoot. I built my first PC before my voice cracked. When I try to troubleshoot my phone I feel less productive than if I were to bang my head against a wall.

As an A+ certified tech myself, you should know there is nothing like wiping the hard drive and starting over fresh.
The previous poster walks you through to factory reset the device, which is what I would recommend as well.
When wiping select factory data reset and wipe the cache too.
This will erase the internal SD card contents. Transfer that stuff over to external SD if you need it.
Set it up. Give it a couple reboots.
Computers and phones are different beasts. As I have incorporated the latter more into my business as of recent.

Hey boneless, I'm sorry to have offended you. Remember, I don't know anything about your background or your technical skills. I don't know how high your expectations of electronics are. So please, no offence intended. I'm just passing on my observation in an open forum.
If you want to blow off steam, go ahead. And I hope some of the suggestions help.

[Q] Specific Media App Question about Atrix/Android

I have a question about music functionality on Android/the Atrix. I want to know if the stock music player or any music player on the Android Marketplace can manage two seperate media libraries.
Specifically, I would like to be able to have two different sets of music, and depending on the library or player, you would only be able to see one at a time. The reason is that I listen to a lot of JPop and anime type music, but I work at a professional sales job and I don't want my co-workers to know I listen to that kind of music. My co-workers are not nice people(typical alpha-male personalities) and would make fun of me to no end if they found out. Say, I wanted to plug my phone in and play it on the speaker system at work, I don't want anime music to show up, so if my co-workers were browsing through my phone, they wouldn't see it.
Anyways, I would be very grateful if someone could recommend a solution, of any kind, involving multiple media players or multiple libraries. Thanks for any help of advice that you have.
BTW I don't have my Atrix yet, but I thought I would ask anyways.
Honestly, since you're concerned enough about what other people think, you might as well totally compromise and leave the music you're concerned about at home.
To answer, there are a number of ways to do this: one simple way would be to load up a MicroSD card with your "secret" music, or use something like PowerAMP, which has it's own media scanner service, so I *believe* you could put your "secret" stuff in a folder that's not parsed by the regular system media scanner (and set PowerAMP to read that folder specifically).
Good luck.
I knew I would end up getting advice of that nature first lol...but anyways, thanks for the advice regarding the music. If you or anyone else comes up with any other ideas in the meantime before I get my Atrix, feel free to share them.
OK I got my Atrix and I've been trying to get this working...but the music player finds the music I am trying to hide, even in a hidden folden on the SD card. Is there any way to limit what files the Atrix default music player adds to the library? I can't find any library options anywhere.
I would appreciate any help, thanks. Make fun of me if you wish but this is really important to me.
android handles hidden files not like windows. so to make a folder hidden, you can put a period infront of the folder. Then it shouldnt show up in your media playlist. For example ".music" without the quotes. Then to listen to those music you can use a file browser like root explorer or astro (which both allows for viewing hidden folders), then you can listen to them that way.
so in summary, music app will not see it, but file browser will. that's a work around.
Strange I just tried this but it's not working. I did put the dot in front of the music folder ".Music" but it still shows up in the music player. I even tried mounting and unmounting the SD card and restarting the phone but it still shows up. I guess the Music App is just too smart.
Actually I did discover a possible solution that I will play with a bit. I realized you can mount and unmount the SD card at anytime. So possibly I could keep the SD card completely unmounted while at work. And then just re-mount it after I get off work. Seems to work fine for the few minutes I've played with it. So thanks.

just curious, why would your co-workers take your phone too look through anyways? you will have it on you all the time, they will not steal it from you and look right? haha.
you should also check out launcher pro, you can hide any app you want from the drawer. so you can just hide your music app during work or hide it all together. then when you want to listen to music, just hit the search button and type in Music and the app will appear. only you will know.

Yea I agree, even if your phone is on your desk and one of the aholes tries to snag it just set your finger print to unlock it and they can have a ball trying to figure it out. That kinda sucks they are are douches about something as simple as your music, I'd prolly give you crap about it but I'd expect it back from you good luck man!

Well we have this nice speaker system and I like to play music on it through an AUX cable, so I just leave it sitting next to the speaker system often time.
Plus I just got this phone and love it so I want to show it off. Even though I don't like my co-workers, I will let them try out my phone so they can get jealous haha.
Oh yeah and @client I do give them crap, all the time actually. And that's part of what this is about. I just dont want them to have any fuel to give me crap about. It's basically like a competition that we have going at work, really. Like one of my co-workers is like 25 and his girlfriend is 19 so we always joke about checking her ID when she comes to visit him at work and stuff.
Atrix Display and Comments
I spent several hours yesterday (Sunday) at a AT&T Retail Store with the Motorola Atrix. As you may know the phone display is a smidge under resolution to the IPhone 4- it lacked the "Punch" I thought the Display would or should have- is it because of Android 2.2? The dual core and Nvidia graphics accelerator should have given the Atrix a absolutely stunning display, it was “Just Ok” display, but nowhere near the retina display of Apple. I am resigned or guessing to think that this may be a Android software thing-
The Battery time appears good, I ran the Motorola “Flash Demo Site” about 9 times, ran Kobe Bryant’s “Nike Black Mamba” 5 min Trailer sever times was all over the web, Huge Multi Media Sites, and I didn’t ding the Battery at all, which was very surprising-
There is no question the Phone is very fast, actually at this point, I’ve never held a faster phone in my hand, we downloaded Extreme Labs Speed test, “Blink” it was done, actually initially I thought the download aborted- No such luck, Its fast-
So the Bottom line, The Display worries me. On the other Hand I'm hearing the Display on the Xoom is Gorgeous- but their running Gingerbread 3.0- I remember there was talk that Gingerbread required some very High Tech Hardware in place, Dual Core, Nividia ect- The Atrix is running Android 2.2-
Oops! I left one thing out-
The Sales rep told me the phone was “LTE Ready”, when I asked what do you mean, he smiled and said all that’s required is a Sim Card Change Out, He said Both the Inspire and the Atrix were that way. After I got home I called AT&T and spoke to a Supervisor in Technical Services, who confirmed that dialog. I am very surprised, as none of the reviews have said that. There has been great debates over 4G, and articles that say the Atrix is but isn’t 4G, and cannot work on LTE-
I have always valued your Forum opinions, and hope that you will take a moment to answer my email. Any comment you can give or overall opinion would be graciously received as always.

Not that I don't value your opinion....but what the hell does any of what you wrote relate to the issue the OP is having?

Lol Looks like he may have posted this in my thread instead of a new one.
Also an update- The SD card dismount is working good but now the folder did get hidden. For some reason overnight the phone finally registered it as hidden. I think I'll just unhide it and keep using the mount trick though, seems more reliable.

lag and instability, or poor user understanding of android

I get lag and unresponsive touch controls after a few hours heavy use. It is resolved with a reboot. Not many 3 party apps installed. Is there a particular way to exit apps in android, I notice not every app has a exit option in it's menu.
Most annoying is when browsing the web and the screen can't determine if it should zoom or scroll.
I'm coming from WM6.5 so if there are some basics that apply to Android and are not phone specific, please point me to the right guide.

there's a task manager in the app list. should be able to close out whatever you want there. good luck
+1 to what he said. You must have every bloat app opened or something too because I have yet to have an issue.

Likely the issue. It will probably get better over time too, but the task manager is a good thing to use. Task KILLERS are bad though.
+1 again! lol I stopped using ATK after my X1.
My friend bought a droid and the person in the store installed it for him. That disappointed me.
I've noticed it too, mostly with ADW EX. This is my third Android phone so I'm not a noob. I'm about to return it and get nexus.

its funny that a phone that isnt out yet is the king of all phones with 0 issues. All hail the nexus, the most perfect phone to ever come out
oh whats that you say, its not out yet....
I am cant wait till the nexus comes out actaully and you start seing the exact same threads "CAN WE DISABLE THE SOFTKEYS SO WE CAN GET MORE SCREEN REALESTATE!!!!" OMG IM RETURNING THIS FOR THE REZOUND!!1!one!!!!"
You must have seen my thread! lol
Chill out guys, the phone gets better with more development, complaining about issues that can pretty easily be resolved with some Dev effort isn't going to get us the Dev effort we want. There is an issue thread, lets keep everything confined to that thread unless it is a question that hasn't been asked. That way, they can see what the issues are, and take action as they can.
like i post everywhere, especially on youtube (because youtube=full of haters)
Nexus fanboys have become as bad as Apple fanboys. period. they're JUST as bad now, and they're annoying as ****. whatever, let him return it and get a phone that's got no definitive release date. he can have fun with his boring, ugly stock android while we love our looks of sense.
I can say that I've had 0 issues with this phone whatsoever. Which is very surprising to me being that every phone that I've ever had always had something about it that I didn't like. I can't find anything with the rezound that I don't like. No lags, battery life is good, zippy, and the screen is amazing. I haven't used the task killer as of yet and I don't think I'm gonna have to. Not trying to sound like a fanboy but it is what it is.

I think I figured it out, in the afternoon I plug the phone in to charge so it will be fully charged by the time I get off work. At that time is when I was experiencing instability. What I found the cause to be is a cheapo usb cable. Anytime I try to use the phone with that cable plugged in it would exhibit instability and a jumpy screen. It would stop immediately after I unplug the usb cable. Never had this type of problem with a cable before, I've had phones not charge because of loose fitting cables but never had a cable screw the phone up like that.

if you are plugged in, check your usb power adapter
I usually change batteries often enough on my tbolt that it isn't a problem, but I like system panel app's widget to kill all. If my phone starts to bog down, just hit it on the home screen and everything gets cleared. You can set a list of apps for it to ignore as well.
As far as nexus fanboys, yeah they are getting bad and tech bloggers are the worst. Reviews of the nexus have actually been pretty middle of the road. Engadget said that it is not as smooth as GB (ICS) and the camera was disappointing. You also can't mount your storage to usb to transfer files and the screen has some amoled issues, esp. with brightness turned down.
I'm definitely favoring the rezound, but will wait till I can score one on Craigslist for about 300.

Is the way to use my same Gmail as phone without all apps auto downloading to Prime?

I was told when I got my EVO 3D that when I logged into the market place with my Google email every app I previously had on my EVO would download to my new EVO and it didn't happen and I didn't care if it did or not cause I have app brain market and used that to get most of the apps back that I wanted. And some apps on my EVO I didn't want on the 3D.
Well Now I have the new Prime just got it today and I wanted to use my same Gmail as I do on my phone and now every app is downloading and I don't want them all on my tablet. I reset the tablet and then when I put in my gmail and the tablet came up every app that is on my EVO 3D is downloading. I have several apps I don't even want on this tablet. Isn't there a way to make them not all download? Is it a marketplace setting? I can't seem to find it and if I have to I guess I'll just have to go and uninstall all the ones I don't want but there is a bunch. I would rather just install a couple apps at a time that I know I want.
Also lots of people have Ice Cream mine says no updates available. I read is was coming out on the 12th so maybe I will get it tomorrow. I didn't want to set things up till I got updates but mine didn't update anything. I went under firmware update and nothing. Thanks!
I do not know much about the Market ... the only thing I know of is that you could turn off Allow Automatic Updates for each app. That would probably stop it. Lots of work, though.
As far as I know, every U.S. Prime received their update a few days ago...
Since you just got your Prime, perhaps you already have ICS? What is your Android version number under Settings | About Tablet | Android version? If it begins with 4, you are set. Otherwise, you checked Settings | About Tablet | System Firmware Update and clicked the Check Update button, right?
No I'm version 3. something already checked last night. And Asus was actually open late and he said there was nothing I could do. He said I would probably get Ice Cream in a day or two but he also said that once you put in your Google account all apps will download automatically from the market he said there is no way to stop it. He said I'll just have to uninstall the ones I don't want which I did most of them now so I guess I'll be ok. I have to get amazon app store next and then I'll have more to install but those I can pick and choose which ones I want out of all my free apps of the day. I checked the Market to about un checking auto updates but I wanted it for all apps but I didn't see it. So everyone who has an Android phone and uses there same Gmail gets all there apps on the tablet i'm guessing? Now I am confused a little on what apps came with the phone and what are mine that I had on my phone. LOL! Oh well It wasn't so bad deleting the ones I didn't want. There wasn't as many as I thought. I just have lots of games and I am not sure how some will look on here. Nice Tablet though I love it. Thanks!

There is a way.
Actually, there is a way to stop the apps from downloading, but be careful with it. I inadvertently found it when my 170 apps were downloading, and I wanted to interupt them to get an update (pre-ICS) If you go into Market while they are downloading, at the top left you will see "STOP x121" (or whatever number is left to DL. Hit that and they stop. Forever. I had to go back and manualy grab over 100 apps after doing so. Ugh. You think deleing was bad, LOL!
Anyway, a good thing to know if you have multiple devices. Whats weird is, they would not show anymore on the Prim as apps that I have, just on phone. If you go to the web site for Market, you can see whats what, but STILL cannot delete old devices. They have at least 15 divices I no longer own, and you can hide, but not delete... ONE DEVICE. Is Google that retarded that they don't know people buy lots of devices these days?
By the way, it looks like they took down the update to ICS for a while, a thread showed people not getting it, with one exception in New York. Maybe they fixed the rebooting issue and screen issues, but then I would expect to see a new update for mine. Just hang in, and keep manually checking, but first make SURE you see a serial number in Device Status. If not you are SOL, and will need Asus or the store to replace your Prime. There are WAY too many of those out there. Asus did a plain ****ty job rolling these out, as everyone agrees.
I know I went to the Marketplace website I went there to see about disabling everything from downloading. I saw my EVO my EVO 3D my Archos and now this and saw where I couldn't delete. But anyway worked out OK for me to just delete what I didn't want on my tablet. I am guessing it downloaded every app. I found the Amazon app store APK and emailed it to my gmail and now I got a few more apps from there that I wanted. I didn't want all those neither but I got to choose those.
I was up so late messing with this last night and I got up early to mess with it again. I am familiar with Android and HTC Phones but not this tablet. I don't even know how to change my background yet or add an app or widget to screen I long pressed and something else came up. I'll figure it all out though. Oh and I have an 8 gig card that came with my phone I put a 16 in my phone but I wasn't gonna put it in since I was gonna order this 32 gig online for like 28 bucks. I have an app app2SD and it's showing me apps that can be moved sd card but I don't have a card in there yet but everyone's saying you can't move apps. I am wondering if it will let me with this app once I put a card in?

Sounds like me my first few days on the Original Transformer. I was like.. Huh? Cause quite a few things are different from the phone version. I remember specifically the add Widget/app screens, and wasn't sure what I was looking at either, LOL. Even more after ICS udate, but for that you can just go to android.com and get a full feature list, and I believe Engadget has a nice review and list of fun stuff to do. It's more evolutionary than revolutionary, and MOST of what makes it so good is not apparent from the top level interface. It's only when you discover things like swipe to clear recent/running apps and swipe to clear notifications that you start to really admire it.
Hey, anyone know if Asus removed "Swipe to close browser tabs" like they removed the unlock with your Face/camera thing? I haven't been able to do it, but then again, no where do they show you what, specifically to swipe! I have swiped the tab, the title bar, the window, and everything else on screen, to no avail. I must be a bad swiper!
The screen you see after long press is how you add apps, widgets and shortcuts to any of the 5 Desktops (Home Screens, whatever) Yo can hold, then drag to screens or tap and they auto move to whichever screen you came from into the tool.
When you get upgraded to ICS, you can add stuff to Home Screens by just going to Apps, and hold/drag apps and theres a tab for Widgets as well. Heck, take your time. The "discovery" part of all this is the most fun I have, and once you know it all, THATS when it gets boring, so have fun.
BTW, did you check if your serial number shows in "settings, About Tablet, Status?" You need to check that ASAP as it determines if your will get ANY updates, and the only resolution I have heard of is exchenge of hardware. Let us know if you are okay in that regard.
Also if you are on the fence about getting the keyboard, get off the fence and get on the web and order it. It's not 100% perfect, but it is truly an amazing piece, as it was with the OG Transformer, and if anything types BETTER, in spite of it's thinness. The additional battery life ALONE is worth it, but with the shortcut keys, trackpad, ports, and how it becomes one wth the tablet, I can't understand ANYONE who DOESN'T get it.
A guy at work let me attach it to my tablet with the OG, and where I had been "thinking about it" before, I ORDERED it, like 10 minutes later, LOL!

+1 -- the dock/keyboard is amazing IMO. Without the dock, the Prime is just a very good tablet (with a few issues, of course), but, with the keyboard, it's a whole nother beast. I do wonder how users with big, wide fingers do on the keyboard, however ... luckily, my fingers are thin.
What do you mean by swiping to close things? I don't even know how to get to your recent apps. I know about swyping with keyboards. But your saying swipe to close browser tabs and swipe to clear recent apps I don't even know how to get to recent apps. I think it's next to the home button on the right but I have to hit hard to make it close where I see the x you can't just tap it I have to press down on it. But I am guessing that's my most recent apps there and I think it's hard to push the X.
And yes I went under about tablet and status and I do see a serial number in the box. Oh and now it says I have an update check notifications. Is it not like your phone where you can swipe down the notifications window? Now I can't find where to go to Notifications. But yeah I think I will get the dock here soon when I have money. I am always near a plug and don't really need the extra battery but the full USB is kind of nice cause I have a flash drive I put movies on. But for now I'll wait. I did order a case and now I want a clear screen protector and a clear back cover protector and I don't know who to buy from. But Ok thanks for helping me I have to find my notifications window now. LOL!
Edit: I found it you click on the right bottom corner mine was showing me all my downloads and as I started xing them out I saw the firmware update but my battery is on 14% and says battery is getting low. I read the 1st few times I need to fully depleted and fully charge it is that correct? So I need to wait and let it go from 14 to powering off? And i have one more question this my Cloud it says I need a desktop app to access my desktop remotley from tablet is that from anywhere? Like at work I can access a movie or song on my PC. I have Audio Galaxy now that does that but it's only music. I want to take a recorded Tivo show and be able to download it to PC and watch it from tablet cause there big files cause of being in HD. Thanks! (Now it let me swipe app to close after ICS update)

Flyer or view question

So I recently purchased the 16 gb htc flyer on buy.com for $200 refurbished, now I see I can get the 32 gb View for $250 new.
Ive searched and found they are basically the same thing with the exception of the view being a sprint 3g/4g contract deal.
Im thinking that Id rather get the view with more memory and in "new" condition for a bit more cash.
But I see various things about sprint logos always popping up and always searching for a signal etc.. One amazon review said that you get constant pop-ups asking to sign-up and its a major hassle.
Im not planning on rooting it, and the fix's I've seen require that it seems. Are there ways to remedy this without rooting?
My question is should I get the view and return the flyer? I really dont want to have to always have sprint stuff popping up and the related hassles of always searching for a signal draining the battery
My View is not rooted, and it's running the stock OTA Honeycomb software.
The only time anything from Sprint will pop up is when you boot up or restart the tablet. It gives you an activation prompt, which you can easily dismiss. Nothing from Sprint ever pops up at any other time. I use No Lock from the market (which does not require root), and somehow it not only serves it's major function (deactivating the lock screen), but it completely gets rid of the Sprint activation prompt when first booting up along with dramatically decreasing the boot time. My View will be completely up and ready to use within 10 seconds of turning it on from being shut down.
Searching for signal ("cell standby") is something that is easily taken care of as well. Simply turning off cellular data in the settings isn't enough since the View is also set up to receive text messages. The easiest, non-rooted way is to run it in airplane mode. That's what I do. You can still use WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS in airplane mode without any problems whatsoever (you'll just have to turn them on after you've activated airplane mode the first time). Once turned on, the tablet will remain in airplane mode, even after reboots (so there's no need to have to remember to turn it on all the time), making the option very easy. Other options are discussed in this thread.
So yes, there are easy ways to solve everything you've mentioned without rooting.

MAN thank you for the No Lock app idea...i don't want a lock screen on my tab, and didn't even think to look for an app that did it! haha
actually it kinda messed my stuff up..when i unlocked it, the signal bars were on the bottom, and it turned wifi off and i guess turned the radio on, then gave me a black screen and somewhat froze lol
Thanks for the info.
Im planning on installing the tablet in my cars dash. They make a dash bezel/trim thing that will hold a 7 inch tablet/gps and looks like a factory item.
I was worried of pop-ups etc... when I use the device as gps navigation but seems I can get around it.

if you buy a 3G/Wifi version and put a sim card in it, yes

Thanks for the info.
Im planning on installing the tablet in my cars dash. They make a dash bezel/trim thing that will hold a 7 inch tablet/gps and looks like a factory item.
I was worried of pop-ups etc... when I use the device as gps navigation but seems I can get around it.

That sounds awesome. Links to product?
I also would like that link. I've seen a few ways to do it, but this is one of my primary reasons for wanting a 7" tablet, to eventually disassemble it and make it into a head unit.
If you check ebay and search "your car here" navigation. See what pops up for dash kits for your car.
I have a soul so I cant say whats out there for other cars, but I bought one like this

That's a pretty interesting idea. The one for my car is a bit too pricey and doesn't integrate as well as for the soul. My idea was to get a car PC doubledin chassis and basically use the tablet as a front end and build a decent amp into the extra space. But their method is much easier. Although for the price and look in my car and the fact that you lose the ability to take the tablet with you I'd say I'll just get a dash mount. Have one for my epic and it works well enough.

can any of you guys tell me how the experience was with buy.com? I posted this on the deal thread but since someone here bought some then maybe its better to ask here.
What was the overall condition of the device and what was included? I am thinking about picking up one since there back to 199.00 again.

I bought it from buy.com for 200.
Came pretty quick, they used fed-ex
Tablet came in a white box, marked as refurbished. In it was just the tablet wrapped in bubble wrap and the AC adapter.
Tablet looked like new, It didn't have any scratches or other marks anywhere. Wasn't even fingerprint marks all over it.
It worked fine as well, booted up quick. Just had to set the time and was good.

I have bought many things from Buy; and have never had any issue.
Are these reconditioned ones coming with a stylus? Assuming not if the pc cable isn't present.

It's highly doubtful. The brand new ones don't even come with the Scribe. With the exception of some limited, retailer specific deals, the Scribe has always been a separate accessory.
I agree buy.com has done good by me. $200 for a flyer is a google. Check out eBay for a pen. 2$20 to $30.

For those of you still having freezes/hangups, mind discussing it?

Let me start this by saying I LOVE the Nexus 10. It's the most comfortable tablet I've used and the screen is just phenomenal, aside from that, the random reboots are really dragging down the experience. I'm sure there still have to be people having these issues, and what are you doing to combat/keep the tablet from rebooting? I've factory reset my device probably 5 times since my purchase in January, and have installed a few ROMs to try and stop them to no avail. I'm currently running CM10.1 with KTManta and are still having crashes daily, if not every 3-4 hours of heavy use. Location services are disabled, and Chrome is nowhere to be found. How many here are still having these issues? I'm just trying to grab a realistic number here for the community. Would those who are having freezes and reboots like to contribute to a global list where we could possibly list all of the applications that we use to see if there is a common ground amongst us? I just hate that this awesome tablet is being placed on the back burner for now with what would appear like no indication of upcoming fixes. I'm sure IO will bring us a more stable version of Android (4.2.2 is pretty awful) but that's still quite a bit away.

There are two awesome threads that this is being discussed on, one is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998496 the other is a Google thread referenced in that same discussion.
I may have had a comepletely different problem, but a RMA made my N10 go from bad to good experience
Been running 4.2.2 official AOKP with default kernel for the last couple weeks and haven't had 1 freeze/reboot. Battery great also with around 7-8 hours of screen time.
4.2.2 was a huge improvement

I am currently on a CM10 base and KTManta kernel and I have no reboots or other problems at all. I had been on AOKP PUB for quite a while before this and it was fine too, and before that I was on a really old build of CM10 (4.2.1) for a long time with only a couple issues due to memory leaks that caused a reboot once every few days.

Your second device isn't rebooting?
Edit: To OP. I gave up combatting it. Nothing seems to work. It could be an app but when it reboots sometimes every few days that would be hard to troubleshoot. I can swap an app list with you if you want although it may be more beneficial to see those the apps of those with no issues so you could have a starting point?

I own this device for ~4 weeks now and I haven't had a single reboot, freeze or anything.
Of course I understand that not everybody is this lucky, so I feel sad for you guys but it seems to be more hardware reliant than anything with newer devices not experiencing many problems.
I experienced several reboots a day when I first received my Nexus 10. It was frustrating to use at best. Since the 4.2.2 (I'm running stock with root) upgrade and switching to Chrome beta I no longer have any reboot problems with the same device. I am now able to turn on location awareness without lockups or reboots as well. It's a complete 180.
My wife just bought her own Nexus 10 and hers has never locked up or rebooted spontaneously. Hers is stock, unrooted, and she uses non-beta Chrome.

It is not.
I mentioned it in another thread, but I prefer to charge a units battery 100% full, then run the unit unitl it turns its self off from dead battery. The first two "cycles" on my RMA unit I did that, no problems during either cycle, each cycle was three days long. So then I started to charge it when the battery said 1%, and now I'm up to 302 hours of uptime. There have been no shell reboots during this 302 hours, as I've always been sure to leave an app in "recently used" and its always still there. I've also been using things that previously I would not have, such as Maps, apps that run message in status bar such as "Date In Status Bar HD" etc etc.
But full tech-slanted disclaimer because I know the history of this problem:
-My problem on my original unit 99.9% of the time manifested its self as "sleep of death", a bit different than "the masses"
-On my RMA unit, I've never opened Chrome. Not because I am wanting to use it but avoiding it, rather I only ever want to use one browser per device, and since I need to use Boat for Flash, I run Boat instead
-Similarly, I have not done anything "trying to force a crash" on the unit. For example, I've not run that crash app that dude just posted to the Google thread
-Again related to my personality/thought process: My goal has been "just use the tablet as I normally would" so that DOES include things like surfing the web on Boat for 3 hours at a time, running some lame match-3 games, etc etc. I am NOT sitting in a class all day with the unit open for 8 hour stints, nor am I watching YouTube for hours at a time, nor am I taking 1 hour video recordings on the device. So moderate use, but not "stress testing" use.
Still, the summary of my experience says it all (for me) - Could not consider the original unit dependable in anyway, it almost always was "off" if it was sitting on my desk, whereas now the new unit has not had a single event and I'm about one month into it, every day use... Original unit I noticed the problem within the first 3 days of ownership, but I thought there was a setting I had wrong, then I thought it was a problem that 4.2.2 would fix - both those assessments of my original device were wrong.
One more data point on this - My new unit is the D serial number, my original was the C - but another user here described the EXACT same crap I was dealing with, and his was a D - so I don't think there is an exact match for the possible theory of serial numbers (again in the context of sleep-of-death-manifestation.)
:good:

I've not had one single reboot or freeze with this tablet, I'm on the stock 4.2.2. I have had some apps crash which brings me to my next point... How do your log cats look? They are usually a good starting point when trying to figure out the cause of a crash.
And if you are getting multiple reboots across a spread of roms than it's most likely an app. You need to take the time and figure out which app is causing it. It will be worth it in the long run!

You do that every time? That's not good and definitely not needed with lithium ion batteries.

I think that is the point for the OP but nobody is doing it. Can you guys with no reboots list the apps on your device? That would give the people with reboots a starting point.
I appreciate the input to the thread but (I'll probably get flamed for this) many of the anecdotal responses are not of much value IMHO. You can't really start any troubleshooting with and not trying to single anyone out, 4.2.2 fixed it, my RMA'd device fixed it, beta-chrome works for me, non-beta for the wife, it's hardware, newer ones are better, turn off location services, etc. I have an RMA'd device so it is newer than the first batch. To that point, there is a guy in the thread bigmatty linked where the device is 8 days old. Is it an app? I hope so but with the infrequency of the reboots or seemingly randomness of it it is hard to troubleshoot. AOKP ran for 2 days 9 hours for me then crashed, then crashed again in 5 hours, and now up for 2 days again so far. The thing is they were all when idle so it is really hard to say what happened. One of my logs suggests gtalk loosing connection and rebooting the tablet. The other says nothing "illegal" or anything like that in the logs. Just the activity manager freaks out like every other log and then watchdog kills everything.
So, you guys with perfect N10s why don't you give us an app list so us poor bastards with reboots have a starting point....please

Look, that's not how troubleshooting works. The easiest and most efficient way is to reset your roms, add one or two apps a day, and keep adding apps till you find the problem. Patience is the key. But once you find the problem you'll be very pleased. Me or anyone else listing apps on our devices will not be meaningful to the problem because you're looking for apps that work, you're looking for ones that don't.
Your starting point is a ROM with no apps.

Well, I've personally done a lot of research into this topic, and no one will ever convince me any other method is as good for the batteries as it is. I've seen the battery discussions on both sides drag on for miles, so not worth discussing really. Just IMHO - ALL batteries can still suffer from memory effect. (Again, seen both sides of that discussion.)
I agree w/ the "top-level-general uncertainty" about these devices and thus the inherent frustrating complexities that rxnelson is talking about. My general opinion on the situation, is - if nothing else, there are some truly defective units in the field now, which further complicates the issue/troubleshooting.

Yea...well that is probably not going to happen for most people. Even at 10 apps 2 days per app you are looking at almost a month of troubleshooting. Most people aren't going to do that. There is also nothing to say that your bad app didn't cause an issue in 2 days but 4 instead you will be thinking the wrong app caused the issue. Anyway it was what the OP asked for so also trying to stay on topic.

Yeah I hear you man. When I was in the cell phone business as much as I love android I hated selling android phones because people go app crazy and install whatever they can find. Then they come back the next day because their phone isn't working properly. Lol.
But honestly, how many different apps do you use on a typical day? And let's put games and other non productive apps aside. So for troubleshooting purposes start with the apps you really, truly, honestly NEED and see if you still get issues.
This really becomes a circular discussion. Its the same as the original links I was referencing. Mods are just humoring us by not merging...

I hear you as well. To be honest I'm just kind of done with troubleshooting. I've had a rebooting device since November. I'm just looking for a base to start with I guess. Kind of like at work. We have 10-15 core apps we install and test on a PC. When they are tested we make an image and blast that to the other devices. If 19 of 20 of the PCs work then we re-image the one. If that doesn't work it almost isn't worth the trouble shooting as we have 20 more that need imaged. Most of the time they chalk it up to hardware send it to the PC techs and move on. If I get bored I'll reflash....and yes honestly I don't use that many apps but it is still kind of a kick in the balls that you have to baby the device. I still think there is something generally wrong with the I/O of the two devices I've had. If I do a restore all apps and I mess with the tablet while it is downloading and installing all those apps they were both almost guaranteed to reboot.

The odds seem so impossible that you personally would have got two defective devices, but clearly you have the tech chops to give a good assessment to the situation - I would love to see your experience with a third device... Just because each different physical device you test would keep exponentially increasing the odds.
A couple of the others who seem real in tune to this issue, I think have a hard or impossible return/RMA path, so I feel like it's an option not being that exhausted yet.
Well, I don't know that I am off much more help on this topic in general. I watched it so intensely for a couple months so its still got my interest. At the very least, guessing all the talks cab start again after klp is released!
