In case you haven't been keeping up with Google I/O, one of the BIG announcements was the release of a complete stock, unlocked, open Samsung Galaxy S4.
It will come with 4.2.2 I believe. It will get updates direct from Google.
However, it is a GSM device. What do you all think about it? Anyone been on the fence about switching phones? Anyone reserve a Verizon S4?
I think it's cool, and I hope Google drops more phones in this manner.

It's cool, but no real reason to get it above a regular s4 imo.

Half the s4's have an unlocked bootliader anyway and most people will be using custom roms, so the ota updates really don't matter.

It also not working on Verizon is a big reason why I won't be getting one. Also, it's $650.

Will the fact this S4 will have Stock android help out the devs for the Carrier's Models? CM etc..? Once all of the sources and what not are dropped by google?

$650 is lower compared to the DNAs full price at launch.
It not working on Verizon really does suck, perhaps some devs will port the ROM over to the CDMA version. I want complete and utter stock experience.
This phone pleases the Android purist in me. I so wish I could have it on my current phone, but I must be patient.

Point being, I have an upgrade. So I can just get the GS4 for $199.
I imagine that since this exists, it would be pretty close to trivial for an almost complete stock experience on any GS4, as from past experience.

Huge letdown in my opinion.
Droid DNA-Newt Sense 5
Nexus 7-Stock

I think it's pretty amazing (and definitely surprising) that Samsung agreed to stock Android.
Hopefully this will set a trend with other manufacturers as well.

I would have been more excited if Google chose the GS4 AND the HTC One for its pure Nexus-like version. Even at full price a HTC One w/ pure AOSP would be a very very very compelling option for high end users. Arguably the best software paired with THE best hardware. That could be worth $650

Agreed... But HTC doesnt have the "stones" to do that. Its led around by the nose from the carriers... snapping their fingers.. "here boy...here boy...cmon".... LOLOLOL....
Ex.... 16 gigs memory... no sd slot.... not helping devs (on the DL) to unlock phones. Now that would be epic. Till then they will always be second or even third consideration for me. I had a TBolt, Rezound, and now DNA. Loved all phones but Nooka please....get some ballz HTC!!!

I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it was compatible with Verizon. I'll have to settle for the normal one with Cyanogenmod.
Sent from my Droid DNA

Doesn't this also mean that (so long as the bootloader remains unlockable) vzw s4 users can have 100% compatible aosp as son as the source is released? I don't know how different the models for each carrier are.

Well, isnt the Atrix the sister of Bionic? I heard from VZW that it was delay due to melting issue. Over heat in situation due to the dual core it uses.
Motorola phones are pointless if you care about aosp kernels etc
Also you are supporting the company that wants root community to die...screw them
I like the fascinate, I dont like samsung, the samsung charge looks a lot like the fascinate, with LTE, and front facing camera, I think is better than the thunderbolt, but again, what good is it to have an unencrypted bootloader if the source codes are not released by samsung, see how we have managed with the fascinate, just hunting for leaks, fortunately we have better releases from our devs than from samsung or verizon, and it is very true what Nitsuj17 wrote, we dont want to support a company that wants to control how you use your owned and purchased with your hard earned money phone, screw motorola.
in simple words, I think I am leaning towards samsung charge

Wasn't the source code for the Charge released already? And I've been hearing HTC is slowly following Moto's footsteps in locking their bootloaders.

Correct and correct. Cyanogen (of all people) has actually picked LG over HTC for his next phone because of this.
I have been with samsung since my first cellphone back in 2004, I will be getting the charge when the price drops.
I think all of them will eventually lock bootloader. Either that or suck.**** on release like samsung. Tbolt looks promising, so is charger.

Same here. I think I'm addicted to the AMOLED screens (cause it sure isn't TouchWiz, using SPB Mobile Shell on the Omnias and LauncherPro on the Fascinate).
The Charge is the new 'big brother' to the Fascinate. The same guts more or less (nothing has changed profoundly), but the 4.3" SuperAMOLED+ Screen vs the 4" SuperAMOLED screen is sexy. Then you sprinkle a little 4G in there and some new cameras, and bam, you have the Charge.

With the OTA 2.2 update tho I'm pretty damn happy with my Fascinate once again. I really think it'd take a screamin' dual core 4G phone to make me really want to jump to a new on.
Yeah I think a dual core would make me more likely to upgrade even sooner.
The charge originally was supposed to be a dual core, but alas it was not to be.
$300 is steep, but if you think about it, its the exact same price as a 32gb iphone.
Think how much better a charge will be than an iphone:
almost 1 inch larger next gen screen.
lte
not stuck on inferior os
etc etc
If you think about it that way, the price seems much more palatable.
I just hope they make the physical buttons better than the DX. Those were flimsy.
That is steep. All of my last four phones were all under 250. Charge has less ram than tbolt. So what warrant the price?

It's official - no ICS for X2 from Motorola and Verizon

Well, it's official now per the Motorola Android Software Upgrade page: the X2 will STAY on the GB kernel (v2.3). No ICS for us.
https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c
This, coupled with Verizon's attempts to shoo me away what with killing the "New Every Two" program, charging a $30 fee for "free" upgrades, and now taking away the grandfathered unlimited data plan and you can bet once ALL the contracts are up on my Verizon plan, I'm switching to Sprint.
Verizon and Moto can flounder for all I care. I'm going either HTC or Nexus. Luckily, the Nexus is on Sprint so I can get an unlocked bootloader which will be nice.
Honestly, who saw this coming? Typical Motorola. Yet more reasons not to buy Motorola. F'em!
If Sprint would cover our area like VZW does I'd switch in a heartbeat. Living in the sticks sucks.
"Droid X2 - Will remain on Android 2.3" That is until Dragonzkiller gets done with it. lol
Thats why I feel nothing good will ever come from carriers and manufacturers. They give us the device and service and it is the GREAT DEVELOPERS that give us the good stuff.

Stay away from HTC. I have had two of their devices. never got an update beyond a minor maintenance. Locked bootloaders and all the baggage from Sense tagging along in the kernels and framework usually keeps them from getting useful updates or custom work even from 3rd party. ANd they are bleeding red ink and going down in quality as well as customer support. Notice their flagship phones no longer even have SD card slots.

As I said before, it's sad that a single hobbyist can do what an entire development team cannot. They're doing this solely so that people upgrade to their new phones.
The Droid X2 isn't even a year old. This is completely ridiculous. I am never buying another Motorola phone again.
It'd be nice if they'd be honest and just put "Lazy/can't handle the bloatware."
Also, Q3 for everything except the newest phones...disgraceful.

Any recommendations for a good phone company that unlocks their bootloaders and supports their phones?

How is the development? Might trade for my HTC One X.

Right now the HTC one x development is pretty slow, and while I do have a great ROM I always love getting new devices and flashing new ROMs. I love having a lot of ROMs to cater to my flash addiction. Is this phones development going to last awhile? I know there will be a new note that will come up soon, and I don't want to be left behind. Has anybody don't this switch? Or has anybody played with body devices and can give some pros and cons? Thanks!

thinking that the note will be around for a while....It has a large following, and good Dev support, not only on stock roms, but AOSP-AOKP as well.
We are just getting our feet wet on the note.
And the note 2 will bring ported content back for us also, including the X....
I'm staying here.....g
The development on the note is fantastic (JellyBean is 99% bug-free with h0tw1r3's CM10 kang and we have CM9, MIUI, Paranoid Android, AOKP and many other ROMs actively under development.

Greg hit the mark with his reply, the note is a unique beast externally but all of Samsungs high end lte line of phones are fundamentally the same internally. This bodes well for an extended development cycle.
One quick question about the HTC One X. Samsung has been pretty good with source code releases, what is the current experience with HTC? Do you find them forth coming with source code and drivers. If that has been the case, what other factor(s) do you think could account for the HTCs One X lackluster rom development?
The hardware your phone carries is high end, impressive specs; I would have thought developers were all over it.

Also curious about the HTC One X -- those are going cheap right now at least in my area, might need a good beater for those small-pocket days. Screen size is OK after using a Note, anybody?

We waited about 2 months to finally get a source code released. During this time period all members of the HOX community were sending ATT emails and constantly bombing their facebook mostly for the fact that our Bootloader was locked, and HTC stated they will provide official Bootloader unlocks on every phone they will release. Well HTC still hasn't kept up their promise and for new comers it's very hard to join the dev community because with the recent update there is no bootloader or root exploit. With the recent source code release I would like to think that development would be booming but I'm completely wrong. The code we got released wasn't even a full source code, but instead half. And to make matters worse it's already outdated, because the source that was released was 4.0.3 and we are on 4.0.4 now. The only bugs that we have been able to fix with the source code is Multi-touch on AOKP roms (thank god it really borked gaming on this device :good: ) We have one kernel that is released but it's not able to be used on a lot of ROM's because it's set on the old base, but everybody is on 4.0.4 now. The dev's are really working hard on making this phone the best they can, but HTC is making it very very difficult. The international version has a lot of dev support because of how powerful this phone can be. But I guess ATT is behind keeping back the updated source and an official BL unlock which makes me mad
The phone itself though is great. The screen is spectacular and I'd even go as far to say it's the best I've seen on a mobile device. The processor is very quick, and when I did have it overclocked to 2.1 ghz it reacted very well and I still got excellent battery life. My average battery life right now is about 3 hours of screen on time. I'm on CM9 ATM because it's the best vanilla experience we have. Hopefully that answers all your questions guys!

What phone will you be going to/did go to after the X2?

Thought this would be a fun thread.
I'm interested to see what phone people are going to after enduring the x2 for any amount of time.
Personally, I'm thinking about the Note 2, HTC "mystery 5" 1080p" phone, or a nexus (although there are pretty much no details on any of those yet).
I got a Nexus. I'll be getting the next nexus when it drops.

ROM: Euroskank CM10

My contract isnt up until April of next year. So unless there isnt anything better out by then (which I'm sure there will be), I will get a Nexus since that is what I really want now. But honestly, the newest Motorola Phones that were just announced dont look bad. Especially if their boot loaders are unlockable and they give me 100 bucks towards it. They were. It looks as though so far that tool works for every carrier besides the big V. This article shows only the dev editions getting the bootloader unlock as of now. I'm sure that can change, but I don't trust VZW or Moto until it happens.
Also, what would the difference be between the dev edition and regular edition if both could be unlocked..?

One thing I like about my DX2 is the feel. It's sturdy, manly. When I got the SIII, the first thing I noticed was how cheap it felt. I know it's a capable phone, but it felt like a toy phone for a kid. Anyway, sold it and still haven't found anything else I like. With that said, the HD developer edition will probably be in my hand come the winter holiday season.
I'm going for the droid razr HD. That's a sexy phone lol
I'm definitely not going back to Motorola. I like the SGS3 or Note 2, I might try the Note 2 esp if it does really come to VZW. Whatever I get has to have JB preinstalled. I like the fact that both phones have 2GB of RAM, it seems to "future-proof" whatever updates coming from Google. (I know updates are not guaranteed however)
Depends on what cspire has in an year and a half. Either the sg3 or the photon q

Old news
Yeah anyone who believed their initial claim of November/December was a fool. When buying the G2 I fully expected it to never be updated like so many of their other devices.
I am hoping to be wrong of course, but as other OEMs push 4.3 and LG continues its silence, the chances of an update get slimmer.
I'm trying to find an OEM that Skipped a version of Android when updating. Say 4.1 - 4.3 etc. Don't ever see it happen.

HTC One on all carriers except Verizon skipped 4.2

Wifes Galaxy Note 2, still on 4.1, and my Note 10.1, still on 4.1. Both are supposed to be going straight to 4.3, but who knows....
This is typical of LG, which is why I hated my LG G2x when I got it. They just don't say ANYTHING. Why would you have a BRAND NEW PHONE on already super outdated software (4.2.2) and then remain hush on updates?!
I am in no rush really but at least say something like, "We're hard at work to bring the latest Android release to G2, ****, ***, and *****! Best case scenerio we should start rolling out in early 2014."
At least you know they're working on it and what devices will get what. It has to hurt sales. I mean it almost made me skip on the G2 just because it was running 4.2.2 when the Note 3 had 4.3. Your sales WILL increase if buyers know you are working on updates. If LG made a statement saying they were working on KitKat then I would have jumped on it earlier.
Funny thing is they'll probably release 4.3 in March of 2014 when we start seeing Android 5.0 stuff. Then LG will give up and never release another update past 4.3.
I just hope LG gives a **** this round or I will eventually smash my G2 and pick up something else. I'm already extremely edgy with LG since they stung me with the POS G2x. Great Phone turned into **** by LG. If they Ruin the new G2, they may never live it down.
I think you are greatly pissed by LG
LG G2
I like LG for theory bring out ohone with no bugs, so update is not needed. I'd rather have that and wait for new os and only see it fail cause again its a bad port lol.

Me too.. I used many phones and still have Xperia Z ultra, Lumia 925, my LG G2 is my primary one. The news about delaying KitKat update is a big surprise for me ....

LG isn't going to announce plans. You'll wake up one day and it'll be there. They aren't going to let there flagship die just yet.
