Defects - AT&T HTC One (M7)

Perhaps I really just do have bad luck but thought I would share my experiences... I got the One through pre order and the device was solid except for a small gap at the bottom that I could live with. However, about 3 weeks in I was using my speakers to listen to some music using google play all access my device was burning hot when I picked it up from my bed (hot enough to a point in which I actually felt the burning sensation in my palm) I immediately ended all processes and did a restary just to be safe, when the device restarted I noticed there was no boot animation sound and soon realized that my speakers were inoperable and wouldnt generate a sound for anything. Then when I got my warranty replacement I noticed that my screen had a warm tint and flickered quite often and after about an hour of using it thw device shut off and wouldnt turn back on no matter what key combination I tried, and the led wouldnt turn on either. I visited a local at&t store that happened to be the store that the regional manager was visiting that day (the only piece of goodluck) where he just took the device (without box or anything at all just the phone) reversed my upgrade and let me pick any device of the same value for free.. (which I couldnt believe because even customer retention said I was out of luck and would have to try again with another refurb, btw I grabbed a gs4 which im ok with for now, might be back to the One once these issues are sorted out) sorry for the rant but this experience with at&t has definitely instilled some faith for me that at&t isnt always useless.

He's letting others know and maybe asking if its common. People who don't have the One yet, like me, want to know how detective the phone can be. I'm not gonna use my upgrade until later when all of this is fixed with the future batches. Thanks for the info OP!

[q] dead pixel

Hello Atrix users! Im not sure about your phone experience but coming from rooted lag fixed 2.2 Captivate (highest quadrant benchmark 2004) i have very positive thoughts about the Atrix. So far i only run into audio playback problem that appear to be the auto -kill check list and is easy fixed by unchecking certain apps and folders , check my findings searching my responses to posts if you having this issue. Till today i was nice and happy till i spotted dead pixel. Im sure wasnt there when picking up from store ( i have 20/10 vision yeah my eye doc is confused too). I wanna know if any of you noticed dead ones after few days of use . If you do im questioning the quality of this display because besides stating its first qHD we dont know jack a... about it.
exchange it at a store
if they dont let you , best bet = take it to a store for a full refund
then buy it at another store
I'll check this post for few days and see how it goes. Its not that big of a deal but just wanna see if any others having this issue. This way I could back this up talking to them in store.

I had a dead pixel on my Atrix as well. Took it to the corporate store from where I bought it and showed them. They gave me a new one without a problem.

Thanks, ill just do that tomorrow. I asked my girlfriend what would she do if happen to her iphone4 she said it wont happen coz its iphone..... just told her to shut up lol.

Just exchanged mine today at radioshack due to a blue "zombie" pixel.
lol..same thing happened to me...had green one on the left lower side. exchanged for new one at the store without any problems
No dead pixels so far *fingers crossed*

Ok this really weird day for me officially saying goodbye to atrix . I posted before about exchanging the dead pixel phone . Coming home I discovered the screen way off alignment to the left and actually twisted sideways . I got really upset and got back to store . They pulled 2 more for me , first one had the same problem off to the left and twisted second oh guess what dead pixel. I can't believe that posting about overall good first experience I found this phone to be such a poo build . I think Motorola totally paid individuals who made first reviews before ATT put them in stores. New dual core technology into something this cheesy its a shame . The guy serviced me today said I'm fourth person returning this phone due to problems with the display . I'm officially done with any Motorola product. Compared side by side with HTC inspire 4G didn't performed any better , even my girlfriend noticed that the HTC its much smother and actually faster opening applications not to mention build quality. So after all this drama I'm looking on big 4.3 screen and thinking I made damn good decision .

This is ridiculous.

I've been getting random reboots.
3 times since I got it. Since yesterday this thing has been freezing and locking up and just frustrating the crap out of me.
I haven't taken any ota cause I want root.
Thanks for any input.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
Take the OTA
Root was achieved on a device that already had the ota. I took it and my phone works great.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
the reccomendation, however, is to not take any further OTAs. I personally am not taking any... because I don't know if the new hboot prevents a downrev to the eng hboot.

Yeah I would wait until s-off. Root will be here soon try a factory reset
Can s-off come out and play? You run but you can't hide
I'd rather be guaranteed root than an ota. I'd try a hard reset first.
Damn. Too late. But I got the ota that made the phone disappear from the lock screen so I think I'm safe. I wont take anymore.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
The ota has nothing to do with the freezing. I had the ota and the same thing kept happening to me. I took My phone back and got a new one. This time I didn't take the ota and I don't have any issues. I think some of the phones are just buggy. If you have a 3vo then you have one out of the first batch. HTC makes great phones, but they don't always get it right. Remember how buggy the TP and the TP2 were.
I got one of the phones with no dead pixels and stuff. I don't wanna risk taking it back and getting one even worse.
After the ota things feel much better. Let's see if the same thing happens. If it does, any ideas what to do? Wait for root and put a better rom? Or get it replaced?

3rd.. while still in 2nd phone posession, 3rd phone wont charge. lol. red green blinking.
4th.. waiting to be delivered.
also, what i have noticed.. ever since my 1st phone, the quality of each SLCD has been subpar to the first one. the whites are warm and the image is not as sharp.
I walked in a local sprint store and they had 2 on display.. one was sharp like my original one and the other was warm and not as sharp..

So I guess the person I spoke to is full of ****. I called Sprint yesterday to get a replacement and I was told once you replace the phone during the first 30 days, you cannot get another replacement. I see he is a liar since you already got 3.
It's not YOUR fault if the phone came defective.

this 4th phone better be pristine..
1) no locks
2) is able to charge
3) sharp. clear white colors
or else, im calling sprint again and will order as many damn evo3ds before my 30 day is up .. i shouldnt have to go through so many to be happy like i was for the first 24 hours of my first 3d.

this monring, i called and said, HI. im on my 3rd defective evo.. HELP! .. the lady was very nice and understanding. she got me another one.

It was Sprint customer service that I spoke to. Took me 3 different people to finally send me a replacement. The first two were telling me I needed to go into a Sprint store to have the moron tech in the back "look" at it. I know the phone is having problems, I dont need this guy to tell me that. What also pissed me off was my friend telling me he was on the phone with them for 10 minutes and had a new phone on the way. I kept getting the run and around and wanted to choke someone. Customer service is definitely good, but they have a few morons here and there.
My phone suffers from the not sleeping issue, so I asked customer support about replacing it. I asked what would happen if the replacement I got also ended up being defective, and they told me that I could get it replaced again.
I'm just scared of getting one that's worse than what I have. The sleep issue is the only big problem. My screen is also slightly rotated and is a little warmer in colors, but those aren't tooooo major. No dead pixels or anything. I just hope my replacement has no issues at all. I can deal with the warmer colors on the screen, but that's as far as I'd want it to go.
Now after two hard resets my phone is stuck in 3D mode. After wiping ENTIRE phone twice my camera won't work LOL. Weird thing is, soon as I hit camera there's just a black screen, then I switch over to 3D it puts my ENTIRE rom in 3D. I'm not joking. The homescreen and everything is doubled and fuzzy like the 3D is stuck. Im so disappointed with this phone I don't what to say......screw the 3rd phone man I don't even want a third one. P.S I'm typing this on the new 3D feature the xda app has that I wasn't aware of :rolls eyes:
Pissed.......

That sucks man..shame since once you get a good one its a pretty amazing phone.. I love it more and more every day ..but US early adopters usually get the ****ty ones
I'm lucky. No problems yet.

Not another teen movie.. I mean, complaint thread.

I'm glad to see how much progress has been made on the after market software front. Really.
But I want to get a 3vo I'm content with before I void my warranty.
I went to the store today to do my second exchange. The first one went through smoothly but the employees in the store today were being hardasses.
This replacement 3vo has somewhat severe light leakage occurring in the bottom bezel. The capacitive menu button is discolored. And the screen is even more crooked than my last 3vo.
I still took it in stride until I realized the tilt of the screen was causing issues with the digitizer.
I consider all these issues to be manufacturer's defects. The manager I spoke with today says he recognizes them as design features of the phone.
I drove 90minutes there and back to the nearest Sprint repair center only to be told off by an asshole.
I'll have to try somewhere else on Monday.
Just getting this off my chest, please excuse my ranting.

I just have to ask. Okay, so you go to the store to exchange the phone. They exchange it, regardless of being hard-asses or not. Why did you even leave the store without checking it from top to bottom, inside and out? I know they powered it up because they have to do that to activate it on your line. And even IF the battery in the new one was dead, why didn't you say "hey, can I use the old battery long enough to test this thing out since I've had problems?"
Sorry for my rant, but it is getting so tiring to come here to read about development and support and it is just thread after thread of people pissing and moaning about problems with the hardware. People pissing and moaning about exchanging their phone 3, 5, and even 7 or more times. I mean really? WTF is wrong with people that you actually would continue to try and get a phone after supposedly getting 7 defective ones in a row?
Then, to make matters worse, you get people on here *****ing about the people constantly *****ing about the problems they have...these are the worst.
This site is called "XDA Developers" - not "XDA Complainers"
Well. I did have them turn it on.
I had the last one exchanged for a dead pixel, that's the deal breaker for me.
I don't expect a perfect phone, just one I'm happy enough with.
I'm pretty free going. I didn't expect the digitizer issues with this one, that's a deal breaker.

^^^^^agree. If you were nieve enough to leave the store without checking the phone for problems, then that's your fault.
On the other hand, they are manufacturers defects. Try calling CSL and telling them about it. When I had a problem with my 3D, after having problems with my local Sprint store, they emailed my a work order for me to take my phone into the Sprint store. I printed it out, took it, and my phone into the store, and they fixed it.
But I cannot believe you left the store without checking the phone...

But again, why didn't YOU test it? You've been on these forums. You've seen all the tears being shed pretty much daily. Why would you ever leave the store without testing it. IF I had a problem with my phone, I would have said very simply to the Sprint person, "I'm not leaving the store until we find one phone without any defects."
But...then again...I've never had a defective phone yet...so I've never had to test this theory out in real life.
After i had mine replaced due to front facing camera failure i tested it to no end before i left. Fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. This is your second evo? Shame on you.

i have one dead pixel, maybe 2, right next to each other on the top most part of the screen.. and i dont care enough to return it, everything else is fine on it.
i understand if you are a perfectionist, but as some of the other posters said, we kinda dont care too much any more. too many people complaining. you should be posting this on the sprint customer support forums so those store employees get fired!!!!

When returning my One it booted into TWRP o_0

I had to return my first HTC One for exchange because of dead pixels. I was working with a rep at AT&T and I had to restore my phone and my phone booted into TWRP right in front of him and I know he saw. I'm so glad those guys are clueless. Just thought i'd share, if you were worried that they wont accept it back if your unlocked the bootloader you have nothing to worry about. He had no idea that it was not the way it was suppose to work. He was more curious that I gave up the S4 for the HTC One.
Now I wouldnt recommend taking a chance so just restore before you go
Most reps don't have a clue.. But come to my store and let that happen I'll over look it because I'm all for having unlocked bootloader and s-off... It's the douche bags that try and lie to me about how there phones got bricked that don't like me

I return an iPhone 4S once that was jail broke with a theme on it because the headphone port was not working. Had I know he was going to actually look in the "About" section of the phone, I never would have left the theme on it. He didn't even care, we started talking about jail break stuff etc.. etc..
I've met quite a few people in my dealings as a AT&T corporate employee over the last 14 years that are far from clueless. I had a guy promoting rooting my Galaxy S2 for a multitude of reasons right in front of my buddy who happens to be my boss, and in charge of enterprise sales, right in the AT&T store.

whats funny is the "sneaky" ones lol attempting top tell me they have no idea how it happened IE a custom rom was flashed lol
I have actually been told by an AT&T support rep to root my phone and install a custom rom to help improve my phone. This was with an HTC Inspire back in the day but I just about died. A support rep, on the phone, told me the best way to fix my phone was to root it and install a custom rom. Still makes me chuckle.

Honestly, I don't think most of them even care. Like when I traded in my s3 for an s4 Paranoid Android was installed and he just did a factory reset and put the phone away before it could even boot back up. Same thing happened with my Atrix, GNex, and Skyrocket these past couple years at Best Buy.
I just sent my first One back to AT&T with TWRP on it. Keeping my fingers crossed they don't notice before I get my refund. I currently have $1400 tied up in these phones since I paid full price, so I really, really, REALLY hope they don't catch it. I did flash a stock ROM and unrooted it, and sent it back powered on with a full charge so hopefully they will just take a quick glance at it and refund me my $700. My new MacBook Pro that I plan to buy this weekend is riding on it :good:

I'm 99% positive that it wasn't enabled. I think it's disabled by default and I didn't turn it on. How would that affect it though? I don't think they are gonna go over it with a fine tooth comb, they are probably just gonna inspect it for physical damage and call it a day.
Or so I hope.

It was always enabled for me by default. When it is disabled on boot it will display red letters showing that it has been tampered. Either way you should be fine, unless the employees know about HTC they won't have a clue what that means.

Well my current one is still just stock rooted, and fastboot isn't enabled. I haven't touched it which is why I'm assuming it's disabled by default. I'm really not that nervous about it, even if they catch it and try to pull some grap, I am very good at arguing. I'll get my money back.

I wouldn't worry either but I have had 3 HTC Ones and every one of them had fastboot enabled on first boot. When you try to install recovery one of the steps are to disable it so maybe that is why it was disabled. If not they will give you the info because they will reimage anyways
That would definitely explain why I had to use adb to boot into recovery the first time after installing TWRP. Man I'm rusty lol.

Really? I tried to return my HTC One X a few weeks back due to a hardware issue with the handset speaker and they wouldn't take it because it was tampered. =/ The guy even asked his supervisor if they could take it because it wasn't bricked and was in perfect working condition with the exception of the handset speaker.
On the bright side I got the One because they wouldn't replace my One X. Lol. =]

Camera WONT focus..

Just wondering if anyone else is having the same issues? My phone is brand new and has never been dropped. It's like the camera will NEVER focus for taking pictures. It makes the sound like it's focusing but still stays blurry no matter zoomed or not.
Any ideas or suggestions?

That didn't fix anything for me. I finally e-mailed HTC and this was their response which also did not fix anything.
Safe Mode
1. Please turn off the phone.
2. Then briefly press the Power button to turn on the phone.
3. While the phone powers on, press and hold the Volume down button until phone loads the OS and "Safe Mode" should appear on the lower left part of the screen.
After you put it in safe mode, try using your phone, if it works perfectly, then the problem may be caused by an application your phone. Which you will need to remove the applications one by one to see which one is causing the issue. If the issue persists, please reply to this email so we can further troubleshoot and have this issue solved.
All I know is I'm about ready to sell/return this HTC One and go get the Galaxy S4. My S3 treated me fine and the camera was far superior.
Was told it's a software issue and the update isn't expected for at least a month. So until then I have a $600 phone with a useless camera. Returning this and going to the S4. Not sure why I doubted it when I loved my S3. Figured I would give HTC a try again from my Sensation 4G days but what a waste of time. I can say the build quality of the phone along with the screen were definitely the things that attracted me.
What about an exchange, since you just got it? Did you get it in store? If so .. you could test out the one they exchange it for while at the store. Mine works awesome, and many others are very happy with theirs. So it sounds like you got a lemon camera. And we all know there are some bad ones in all the phone models.

True. I actually returned it and went with the S4. I'll give HTC another shot once their next big phone comes out. I did find myself missing a bigger screen also. It may be lacking a few PPI compared to the One but it's just as nice. Thanks for the kind words guys.

I can say the build quality of the phone along with the screen were definitely the things that attracted me.

I see that you already returned the One. But I do not see how it could have been a software issue. If you were stock, you should have had build 1.27.531!8. I have that build and my focus works fine. Sounds like you should have exchanged it because it was clearly defective. Too late now, though.

Just wondering if anyone else is having the same issues? My phone is brand new and has never been dropped. It's like the camera will NEVER focus for taking pictures. It makes the sound like it's focusing but still stays blurry no matter zoomed or not.
Any ideas or suggestions?

In my phone this strongly correlates with heat. Once the phone gets hot from being at high brightness or doing something graphically intensive it will not focus. Sometimes you can get it to work by giving it a sharp slap or pressing gently on the glass in front of the camera. If you let it cool down for a few minutes then it works. But it is definitely a physical problem.
I'm having the same issues. My first HTC One was fine but had a power issue so it was replaced with this one that will now not focus. I contacted HTC and T-Mobile and was told that there would be a software update in the future to fix the issue but there are no specified dates. I asked T-Mobile if they could exchange it since it's only 2 months old and was told I would have to wait on an upgrade or purchase at full price. I'm really not pleased about any of this.
