[Q] Have Unlimited Data with Rooted S4 on VZW. Tethering app? Is there one? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I used a different tethering app on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus, but it doesn't work on my Galaxy S4 anymore. I have rooted my S4 on Verizon and now I'm trying to find a good tethering app, since I'm grandfathered in on the Unlimited Data Plan....yah, I paid full price on this phone. It hurt.
Anyone know any apps for rooted phones that allow for tethering?
Thank you in advance!

I used Barnacle Wifi Tether on my X2, does that work? I planned on trying it with my S4 but just got it today and haven't rooted it.

Look for Portable Wi-Fi hotspot on Google Play, I don't even think rooting is needed to tether.

I've just confirmed this work. I rooted my phone about an hour ago but im pretty sure that wont make a difference. I love how it actually turns on the Verizon hotspot too lol now i wonder how long it will take for them to notice this? Hummm

I was using the sqlite edit with my bionic and tethering for over a year, no problems. But then again I only use about 8gb a month which isn't much compared to some people on here.

The best app that I've ever used was PDANet. It has a Bluetooth net access recently added (using it right now) the license is worth it for a laptop and tablet. I had it on my original Motorola DROID and I would use it with my laptop all the time in places without wifi and I would drive people nuts! Best part is, NO ROOT REQUIRED! Verizon doesn't block it (or can't) so no worries there and I think with wifi hotspot enabled you can have up to 10 devices using it. The directions are simple to follow, however, I did have some trouble locating PDATablet for use on my tablet, but found it on another android forum. Now they have it on the play store.
I'd post a link but, I've been a longtime listener but a first time caller!

I use FoxFi (pdanet) and it works great with the S4 both stock and rooted. They do have a data limit in their free version which you just have to restart to use again. The paid version you can use as much as you want.

Guys there is no reason to use a third party app. Just create a widget to start tethering, or download "portable wifi hotspot", all it does is activate the stock hotspot without the subscription check.

I really like the settings that wifitether had, especially subnet. If you know of a way to modify the subnet on the built in hotspot, then I am one step closer to replacing wifitether

Widgetsoid:
1. Install Widgetsoid, convert to /system app.
3. Profit (the switcher works with native hotspot)

hi - I get you can tether right off the phone- however Windows 7 sees the tether natively as a local IP connection :good: but it's frozen as in I can not access the properties it pulls a 92 address with a gateway but I can not ping it and it does not connect to internet- do i need a tether program still on the PC side?

It works through the ROM without any extra Apps. Just turn it on through the Wifi menu, or use the toggle from the pull down menu.
You'll get the red Verizon wifi icon in your task bar, but as long as you don't get a message to sign up for the wifi plan, you're good to go.
and if you get the subscription notification, just download portable wifi hotspot from playstore and that app will bypass it.
Gnome is correct. No apps needed with Beans ROMs.

To get the best results I have used the TrevE mod wifi tether app which can also be installed via beans rom... I find that I get FULL download and upload bandwidth from Verizon versus the stock app where I only get about 5-10mbps down and about 5mbps upload... You do have to have the correct settings though. The settings can be found in Bean's rom thread and it has been working great for me with no disconnects and about double the speed of the stock app! :good:

seriously lets not split hairs...you know what i meant. im saying unlimited data users can not just open the stock hotspot app and tether. a toggle or 2nd party app is required.
I am thinking about bucking up and buying one of these full price because I don't want to loose unlimited data. WiFi tether is my biggest need for free of course. On my droid x I use WiFi tether beta works like a top is this possible on rooted stock or is via custom ROM needed? I'm not familiar with that app. But like you, I use WiFi tether all the time, with an unlimited plan. "Portable WiFi Hotspot" works great, with stock and rooted as well. Available from the Market, and free to boot.
Thank you yeah I have been digging around and from what I read if you get a subsidized phone that the take your grandfathering that's why I think I will have to buy it outright at full price it sucks but I can burn through 5 gigs a week between hulu and Netflix tethering 2 other devices so a tiered data plan would kill me.
Don't waste your time with native Verizon hotspot app.

not sure I want to root, best tethering option

I know wifi tethering requires root and I've had my rooted thunderbolt for soooo long I dont even know what is out there, What app recommendations do you have that I can use to tether to my laptop without rooting new gs4, I have no problem using usb cable.
On gs3 for Verizon there was a bug where you download any tethering widget and when you turn it on it would bypass the subscription check to Verizon. Try this?

[Q]Mobile hotspot unlimited data root?

It doesn't require root BUT Verizon has been known to charge around 8 dollars a month to activate the functionality.

Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Wifi Tether works great for me and lets me see how much data I'm actually burning through. I'm using the one w/ the Synergy ROM, TrevE Mod.
The built in tethering only works if you are on a share data plan. If you are on an unlimited, you can't use it without paying extra. However FoxFi works WITHOUT root on the S4. I have yet to root because my wifi passwords all back up to google now, and I could care less about my angry birds data as I don't play it anymore. Tethering was really my only reason for rooting this and since foxfi works with no charge and no root, I haven't rooted. I don't use windows so until I NEED to root, I'm not going to try to get one.

either "one click tether" or "power toggles" or just any wireless tether widget works.
I am still on unlimited so the FCC ruled free tether does not apply, so when it prompts to go to Verizon or cancel just hit the home button and wireless tether stays on. :good: While its on you can still go into the settings and set up WEP security passwords.

[Q] SM-N900P Wifi Tether

I have rooted my Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3, mainly so I can tether. However, upon installing Wifi Tether (I tried regular as well as TrevE Mod), and entering the usual settings, I found that it does not work with this phone. Does anyone know of a way to use wifi tethering on this phone? Is TrevE going to update his app to work with the Note 3? Developers, if you are seeing this, such an app would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

They seem to suspect that TWRP is causing the boot loop (I haven't installed recovery yet) but I'm rooted using chainfire method and haven't had any issues with booting. But yes, rooting would be required to get around sprint's official wireless tether.

I bought Wifi Tether Router, and it works, but there are a few things I cannot stand about it. A security passcode cannot be set on an ad-hoc connection, so anyone can connect. Also, even after I tap disable, the ad-hoc connection is still active! New devices can still see the hotspot until I turn on my wifi and connect to a network.

It may not be wifi hotspot, but for a good workaround for now I'm using Pdanet+ on my Note 3 and Bluetooth tethering to my tablets using Pdanet Tablet. This creates a secure VPN connection to the tablet and all my streaming apps work fine on it. Haven't tested it with LTE yet but going to try that tomorrow.
