[Q] Missing part | whats it called? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone
Just got a second hand i9100. Everything working except i have a part missing in the main board.
It seems to be some kind of black metal protector for the main board
My board looks like this:

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

}
And a normal board (from a YouTube disassemble video) looks like this:
I have both pictures in good quality but i can't post them....I'm a new member
Please help me, copy paste the links and you would see what I'm talking about
Can someone help me with the missing part? I can't find if in eBay cause i don't really now what to search for....

Search my posts from the past couple of weeks, I've attached the service manuals in a zip file to one of them, might help you identify the part (Has a full parts list down to the last tiny screw).

hey
Hey,
Found it. Very nice one! But, the metal mainboard protectors are not detailed there.
Searched the whole 6 PDFs but didn't find their name
I guess somehow a cheap local phone lab took it out deliberately because it an expensive parts (all 3 protectors gone (
What to do next?
Thanks!

You actually searched & found it ?! Well done (Most people would whine & say 'Give it to me now') Gold star for you
Not much of a hardware expert personally, I tend to leave that stuff to the experts. Perhaps KeithRoss or TheUnderling might read your thread soon & be able to help.

Hi Dude, and welcome to XDA.I disassembled my phone yesterday(unmounted mainboard and everything, till the last screw, not for the first time)and I have to say that I don't have these protectors, and I've never seen them.So I don't know, but I think this makes nothing. My phone never had these protectors, but it worked fine everytime. No problems at all

Just read this thread and I can't see the photos......
I have disassembled an S2 recently and replaced parts, so if there's someway you can put the images into (for example) dropbox and provide the link, I can dl and take a look....

Ok....had a look at some pictures of motherboards on google and some video teardowns........
I am assuming those black plates are some sort of RF (radio frequency) shielding. I don't think they perform any critical electrical function. I did some part searches too.....without success.
My advice would be to re assemble the phone and use it as normal. If you notice any interference or static or any other "unusual" behaviour during use, then you will need to maybe contact Samsung to get those parts.....otherwise I wouldn't worry about it......
Edit.....I assume the picture below is what you're describing....

Hey
Yes you all right, I think that the exact description is RF shields… So it means the phone can destroyed perhaps a magnetic rail like on a credit card and so?
Besides that i hope i wouldn't be harmful to the phone overtime..
Also yes these parts are unobtainable, maybe you need to buy the whole motherboard to get those RF shields back....

It won't harm the phone if you put a credit card next to it as the card is "passive". You might have an issue if the phone is placed next to the credit card reader....or if the phone gets anywhere near something that uses NFC (near field communication) technology. But otherwise it *should* be ok.....

Got a Galaxy S 4G early from T-Mobile for some reason and I was wondering how much it would go for on eBay or something similar. Any suggestions are appreciated

This +100. This could potentially blow open DEV work on the Galaxy S platform. Is there any way I can send you a JIG for free to tell me if it works on it?
Does he even know how to sys dump that sucker?
ok so i looked at your ebay listing. That closeup of the phone and screen protector with a hole there is not the ffc, thats the light/ proximity sensor that i see. The ffc should be on the right side of the ear piece not the left. Unless samsung built a whole new vibrant where the ffc hole is not on the usual side of the phone.

yeaah i noticed that too, take pictures of the back and the right side of the phone please!
I've already got the dump.
I've had it since Jan 25th.
The only reason I haven't posted it yet is because every time I do post a 4G leak, I get slammed stating it shouldn't be in the Vibrant section.
and besides... I spy a troll.

definitely not a galaxy s 4g. as you can see, it has a screen protector on and that so called "FFC" is the ambient light sensor and prox. sensor. PLUS notice how he covers the box lid with the phone =P only way to prove that its a Galaxy S 4G is to take a pic of the back of the phone showing the model number and the boxs lid...it should show the movie "Inception". You can easily tell the phone is used just by looking at the dirt n grim build up around the screen protector opening for the sensors.
Lame. There's no ffc in that pic.
Clearly not a 4g... hell i can look at my Vibrants box and tell its the exact same box, let alone theres no FFC and the phone looks HIGHLY used... someone should report that ebay listing so some dumbass doesnt get duped into buying an original Vibrant for waaayyyyyy over list price... for f*#ks sake, if your gonna try fraud at least do the camera mod first jackass!!!
I think its funny he thought he could advertise it here and no one would notice.
Reported to ebay

Is the Galaxy S II really 8.49mm thin?

The Galaxy S II does not have the same thickness across the entire profile of the device. My question is, is the 8.49mm stated thickness at the thinnest point or thickest point or is it some average?
The thickest point appears to be at the base where there is a lump on the back of the phone (similar to original Galaxy S). There is also a lump where the rear camera is.
Well, I will not flame this question, but will merely state that as an average from the center its probably 8.49 mm. The thickest point being the bottom where the bulge is, might take it to 8.74 mm.

@dhruvmalik: Thank you for taking the question seriously. I was actually thinking about a home project where I needed an Android based smartphone that would fit in a 9mm slot. If the phone's spec was 8.49mm at it's thinnest part and over 9mm at it's widest then this would not cut the job hence the question. It's a shame that other people need to respond with flames and tarnish the friendly reputation of this forum site . Until just now, I've experienced nothing but high levels of helpfulness.

No problem, but for the future sake, it might be helpful if you state that you need specific requirements as far as fitments and hence you are asking such a question.
Otherwise it just makes you look silly to find out whether this phone is 8.49 MM or 9.0 MM.

Camera Problems

When I received my HTC Amaze, the camera had absolutely no issues. Since that time, I have, essentially, "garaged" my phone. I installed a Steinheil screen protector on it and have kept the phone in my room. Today, however, when I attempted to use the camera application, I was met with absolute failure. Whenever the camera detects a light source, lines flash across the screen and the camera application temporarily freezes. Pictures can be taken, but they have "digital" lines and sensor errors across them (example picture). Sometimes, the image is shown twice, over a horizontal "split screen".
I have no idea what could have caused this, my device is entirely stock.
I have reset my phone and the issue is not caused by fluorescent lighting.
This is my third replacement phone (I had two replacements for my Sensation). I want a working phone.
The screen protector is worth $7.50...
As far as I know you can't do anything else, and even rooting might not help. I know it sucks, I got the Amaze instead of a 4th mytouch4g, but getting another one is your best bet. I haven't seen or heard about this type of issue, you prob got a fluke. HTC's quality control isn't the best...

That's what I'm doing. I figured it might be helpful to have the known issue "documented" in-case someone else experiences a similar problem.
Which rom version u are using atm?
Tested 3 HTC amazes that belong to my family, there is nothing like yours.
I believe you got a faulty unit.

Hmm I'm not sure you can really call that a "known" issue.
My sister, her boyfriend, my brother and I all have an Amaze.
No problems with our phone.
Honestly though if I picked up my phone and my screen did that number I'd call and get a warranty exchange with a quickness.
No need to post or ask about it cause it's pretty obvious it's a defect.
"Known", in that it is now something that exists. That is why I extend the statement by mentioning the purpose is to establish the issue in the situation that another individual has the problem.
Phone was 100% stock.
I am now on my fourth T-Mobile replacement. The replacement that I just received has the antenna connectors broken off.

I still don't get what you were trying to do here.
Establishing the issue in case others have it?
But your issue isn't OS related or a build quality issue.
Your problem wasn't even solved.
Your phone was just messed up and you needed an exchange.
It doesn't seem like you found some common issue and brought it up to everyone's attention.
And I mean no harm I'm just trying to understand.

So I have a different camera problem, but didn't wanna start a new thread. My pictures come out super yellow and in the camera app everything is yellow. This is indoors, like my house, and I can see the difference when I switch the resolution or between widescreen and normal in the settings and I see the normal white. I can't show the white, but here's the yellow...

[Q] where to start ?

Hi i think my S2 is falling behind in updates so i consider installing a custom rom, i just dont know where to start ?
Can anybody help me ?
What do i need to know ?
Wich rom to choose ?
There is no "best rom" so try to google or look at forums to see the one that suit you the most.
If you need light one then try Slim Bean or if u need a lot of options go for CM10.
There is a lot roms so you need to find the one u like the most. Most of them are great, its just what u like/need.
Try reading this thread before starting and make sure you are confident in what you are doing.

You should probably buy a usb jig, find out where your nearest j-tag center is(for future reference), and a mb is about £100 if your out of warranty.

There is just so much to read, maybe i didnt have to read it all
Almost every person who has busted their phone to one extent or another on here lately (and there has been quite a few) did so because they thought 'There is just so much to read, maybe i didnt have to read it all'.
The likelihood of you borking your phone increases exponentially depending on how little you read/learn/understand. Take your time, don't do anything to your phone unless you understand exactly what you're trying to do to it.

Thats right, you dont need to read it all.Because of the popularity of the phone, loads of threads have 1000s of posts-so for now just read the first few of the ones you need.
And in this forum, you find almost everything covered each week and it just like a bootloop the following week (same crap different people).
So read a few guides about odin/cwm/roms/kernel/efs/nand backup/brickbug/bootloop etc.
And look through the problems here.Youll find the solutions posted which will increase your knowlege.
Some people know so much about brick bug....they became experts by having their devices bricked because of that bug.

Google Pixel WiFi Chip [ 0760RA G915A6 ] Needed Help.

Dear Respected Members,
I am in a huge problem so I got myself Google Pixel 128GB Phone. After the use of 1 Month the WiFi Dropped. I wonder what happened. The Bluetooth was working fine. The wifi toggle went off completely. Try to slide it to the ON position it slides back to the OFF. Obviously, the phone was out of warranty and I got very much concerned. So ultimately I went to my trusted Phone Repair guy who has professionally opened the phone carefully and applied the heat to the wifi chip so that re-balling happens. Once it was done the WiFi worked but only for 10 - 20 minutes. After so many tries and with no success it was mutually decided to lift the chip and this was happening because the resistor next to the chip was shorting to the ground. It was mutual understanding the WiFi Chip is short. Once the chip was lifted the short was resolved automatically.
THE PROBLEM :
I was unable to find the replacement Chip for the WiFi and now the phone is without Bluetooth and WiFi. I have tried to check AliExpress and even US / UK based websites but couldn't find any solution. If any respected member can help me or sell the chip or find the chip I shall be very thankful. I need guidance in this regard. This is the first phone I am so much messed up in finding the replacement CHIP.

did you find this chip?
No still haven't found it. It's been 2 months now.
Maybe try getting a water damaged or physically damaged one off ebay and try a chip swap, might be hard to do a reball with it though since there clearly aren't going to be stencils and the smd components on the bottom side seem to be right in the line of heat fire. Would love to see progress if you move forward
Same Issue with My Pixel.
Both WiFi and Bluetooth is not turning on. Any solutions?
Buy a used pixel with a cracked screen and use screen from your phone and the rest from the other phone.

The problem with wifi was solved by replacing the chip with a non-working motherboard. The chip itself consists of two chips, you can not buy separately. The Chinese write that they can make from 100 pieces. Now google pixel xl is under repair with the same problem, I'll sort it out what's wrong with it.
