[Q] POSSIBLE SD card workaround? Sounds like an interesting idea. - HTC Droid DNA

How possible would it be for some one/company to make a case for the Droid DNA with an SD card slot? It mean, theoretically it sounds possible, and of course it'd add some size and weight to the phone but IMO it'd be worth it. I got the idea from when I randomly tried a flash with with the OTG cable and it came up as USB storage. So maybe like, the case would go into the charger port of the DNA, and have an SD card slot built into the case which would come up as USB storage on the phone...It sounds like it could work to me, but, would charging work? I dunno, I'm just dumbfounded on why no company has tried this yet.

I had the same idea a while back. It could totally work aside from the fact you couldn't charge it. Unless there was also a charging port on the case. But basically no one would make it because there wouldn't be enough demand. I could see someone making some sort of universal product made in a way that it would lie flat against the phone in whatever case you use. Basically a microsd attached to a thin flat ribbon cable or something.

It could work, but it would cost a decent amount, and would add a decent amount of bulk to this already large phone.

Yeah I figured that, not so much the costly part, but add a decent amount of bulk, I probably wouldn't have a problem with it aside from the fact that it probably wouldn't fit inside my Moga Pro lol

I'm tempted to diy this. I wonder of there's a otg cable thin enough to do what I want.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

There was a kickstarter a while back for a very small doggle that does this. What I was thinking was making a 3D printed case with the SD located in the back of the phone. You would remove the case to change SD cards, and there would be a passthrough for USB charging and data access.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 4 Beta

The bulk would not be to thick. Look at the ipeel. It's for sim cards but that's a good idea of thickness and design

I'd imagine it would need some soldering skills or something. I'm pretty sure you can get an OTG cable thin enough just by stripping the rubber off of the cable, and removing the plastic casing around the Micro USB connector, but for the other side, wouldn't it require you to take a tiny MicroSD to USB adapter, remove the USB connector on the other end, remove the USB port off of the stripped OTG cable, and then solder the wires together? After doing that, maybe have it sit flat against a DNA case?

Something like this http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/andyfei/mini-microsd-reader-for-android-smartphones-and-ta without the casing and a flat ribbon connection. The biggest part would be the at the phone connector, it would most likely need some custom one made for it as I'm not seeing any off the shelf option.

If those were commercially available, I could see someone possibly making a case for it that has a little square input on the bottom of the case to hide the reader itself, because so far it looks like one little bad touch would probably break the entire reader. Sorta something like this https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/projects/156190/posts/470238/image-250940-full.jpg?1367529002 with the reader going in on the bottom.

Because it's easier to make 1 case that covers all iPhones then to make 1 case for 1 android device which has like .001% market share.

I honestly think I could design something that would be no larger than an Otterbox. With this case installed, charging would be handled inductively. Could even have a full sized SD card slot if you wanted it to.

Seems to work okay with the GS4. I'm sure a small built-in microUSB hub could also handle the charging problem.
My main point is that if you included it in a case the size of an Otterbox Defender, it wouldn't add much bulk beyond what the Otterbox already adds.

I have a Glacier Otterbox Defender, my only gripe with it is the crappy screen protector I had to punch out so I could use my invisible shield. That and it won't fit the best in my Moga Pro anymore, it still fits, just can't have it faced down or anything like that. Anyways, let's say you do make these gifts from god, do you think you'd sell them or make a tutorial or anything like that?

Sadly, i'm not creative enough to actually design something like this. It just seems feasible given the size of the Otterbox and the amount of room there would be to work with.
Hell, they make iPhone cases with an extra battery built-in. A small usb hub/card reader would take up less room than a battery.
EDIT: By the way, I agree - I absolutely HATE the built-in screen protector. It protects, but at the expense of 90% of the sensitivity.

Here is an alternative to the Samsung car mount that you might consider:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/320764561950?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
I have been using this for about a week and am thus far happy with it.
The construction feels a little flimsy but that is by design, I think, since due to its flexibility, it allows for useage with the phone in a case...which was my primary reason for buying it.
It slide locks onto a proprietary disk mount that has adhesive tape on one side for placement on your dash or other flat surface.
One downside is that there is no dedicated audio out connection...you have to use the phone's audio output. But that isn't an issue for me since I connect to my car stereo via bluetooth.
Rotates to landscape and charges the phone through a micro usb connecion at its base

Not weird. People prefer to have the charger cable coming out of the bottom of the phone when in portrait use (usually, the phone is above or at equal level to the charger).
However, they prefer the headphone jack to be at the top, so they don't have to flip the device over when pulling it out of their pocket.

[Q] Charging Dock?

I was wondering if anyone has seen a charging dock for the EVO 4g LTE. It seems the EVO is missing the contacts that the ONE X has on the back so that it can easily be placed in a dock. I know its not a deal breaker but i would really like to be able to just place my phone in a dock without having to fumble for the cable to plug into the side of the phone.

It's designed so you can flip the device over and still charge it while using the kickstand. Spring loaded, so it holds it up fine.
Yeah, I was about to say the kickstand is more rigid and firm than the og evo and works from any side.

They also have one that can be powered by batteries, but it sounded horrible.

I'm not sure how many of you use your kickstand... but I use it pretty frequently and I noticed that when I try to rest it reverse landscape - so the charging port is facing out - it just collapses; it can't hold it up. has anyone's kickstand grown weak already? I think it was designed for that. Specifically so that you can access the port while propped on the stand. That's why it's so much stiffer than the OG one.
I personally never used the kickstand and probably never will, but i just tried using the kickstand with the charger port up and it didnt collapses but it was easy to collapses. this. can you charge the phone while having the kickstand out? yes Is is practical? probably not. I don't think the kickstand was designed so that you can have it connected to the charger and poke away away at like nothing is adding wight to the top of the phone. Using the phone WILL probably cause the kickstand to collapse while its connected to a charger cable. just look at the design, extra pressure will just close the kickstand up.

Broken S-pen

If anybody has an S-pen that has broken, please PM me. I am trying to make my own and need the circuit card to make it work.
I make pens and pencils out of wood on my lathe and want to try my hand at a S-Pen stylus. I have been unable to find any pens that look decent and thought this might be a good solution.
Alternately, if anyone knows of a source for the circuit boards (both pen and eraser) please let me know. If I can put together a workable kit for these I might consider selling a few.

You might want to check out this rather lengthy thread on styluses. There are some desings/ideas for pen holders that dont destroy the original spen. I would not advise taking a spen apart. However if you are a king with wood working and can produce objects that are accurate to a fraction of a millimeter then go ahead. The board has to fit correctly and support the tip. The tip of the pen with the coil seems very fragile to me. I would advise making a holder around the spen shell instead of designing a new pen from ground up.
I made a simple printable spen holder which can be found here, you should be able to make it from wood too.
Here are the photos and dimensions of the circuit board.

Screen protector and in the box?

Hi guys
Just two quick questions?
Firstly did anyone get a cable that looks like a USB otg cable in your box?
And secondly has anyone applied a screen protector to their z2? I applied the one in the box and I dropped my phone. Luckily no damage except the fact I've got two bubbles now because of what looks like little specs underneath. I'll have to double check.
Anywho I've already ordered one from mediadevil (been happy with them since my S) and wanted to take my current one off. So does anyone use a screen protector?

Yes, mine also came with an OTG cable.
I wanted a protector for the BACK of the phone, which was unfortunately not included, so I got a Spigen protector. It was very cheap and easy to install. I'm happy with it.
Get a tempered glass protector, they are amazing!

I believe the OTG style cable is bundled to help people move from different devices.
I work for a phone provider and Sony have been banging on about "Xperia transfer" (or something named along those lines) for a while and it can apparently support ios, blackberry and Windows phones for full data transfer very quickly.
I've used USB OTG on a few devices too before, it's alright, not amazing but then again I was using quite a cheap cable. I used es file Explorer when transferring get stuff if anyone is interested.

I don't believe any Z2s actually came with a back protector. I think people were confused because the screen protector that DOES come with it has two stickers on it that say "FRONT" and "BACK." People mistakenly took that to mean there were 2 protectors in there. I could be wrong about that, but so far I've read no confirmation that anyone actually received a back protector.
You are right however I'm sure they do have a back one. I have seen some but just weren't able to purchase it and no I can't find them
