Best Place To Buy T-Mobile's Version of The HTC One For Use With The $30 Pre-paid Pla - T-Mobile HTC One (M7)

From what I've been reading, you have to buy the phone in a Tmo store because they wont sell it online without a post paid plan. I also read you can get it at Walmart. Are there any other options for buying the Tmo version?
So to sum up, t use the $30 plan with the HTC One:
You have to buy a micro sim online at Tmobiles web site.
Buy the phone without a plan.
Activate the sim on-line with the $30 prepaid plan.
Insert sim into HTC One.
Call T-Mobile or go into a Tmo store if you want to port your number.

Yeah you can buy it online. I bought mine at ebay but am using my old plan. I dont remember how many minutes but they are shared, Nationwide 4G Data (the true unlimited one) and unlimited minutes, all for 40 bucks a month. I havent gotten a new Sim as I am using the same one I got 8 years ago I just cut it myself but still works. It says Wifi Calling wont work because I need a new sim card but even when it did work on my G2 I never used it once

Thanks. You say you got it on EBay? From an independent cell phone seller?

I just walked into a T-Mobile store, asked if they had the HTC One, and purchased one. He looked up my account, noted it was prepaid, and proceeded to sell me the device. It did cost a few bucks more (less than sales tax added...)

I ended up buying it at Tmobile. I think it was about $609 plus tax.
Also discovered you can't buy a micro SIM for pay as you go. Had to get a regular SIM and modify it.

Got a new, unlocked one on Craigslist (clean IMEI) for $450.
So, locally if you want to save a few hundy.

? When I had the One X all i did was walk into the T-Mobile store showed them the phone and asked for a micro sim and the guy just switched my account to it and I was on my way.. No charge No Fuss
Online they sell the micro sim as a prepaid activation kit.

When was that? I bought the phone in a T-Mobile store last Friday. I asked about the pre paid SIM. I was told no, you have to get it online.
The only micro SIM T-Mobile had on their site was for post paid. Why would I buy a regular SIM and cut it if they sold the micro?

Went to a tmobile store the other day. Asked for a micro SIM card and got one.

There isnt a specific prepaid sim their all the same. Just some reps don't know any better

get it off craigslist if you're fine with hassle and the risk involved. if you get lucky you will score one for cheap. otherwise ebay or amazon marketplace is the safer bet but you will pay a higher price. t-mobile direct will cost you $600+ with tax and everything.

I have bought ~8 phones from craigslist. All have been sqeaky clean.
Now, if you find a One for "$299- CLeAn Imeeye!" you should run the opposite direction.
Or maybe I'm just very lucky.

Retail is $599 so unless it's stolen you're fine.

For those in LTE areas, are you actually getting LTE on the $30 walmart plan on the HTC One?

yours was likely stolen from a tmobile store or something similar. you should be fine though as you're not the thief and can't be implicated as there's no way of you knowing where the seller got it from.

I had it replaced with a brand new unit from HTC because the camera was defective, so I don't care.
I know the FUD surrounding Craigslist, but I've been buying unlocked phones from there for years. Never, ever been burned. Lucky I suppose.
Either way, doesn't matter. I have a new phone so I'm good.

Was replaced with a new one from HTC so I'm not worried. Wasn't worried to begin with, actually. I know how to find scammers who try to rip me off. No big deal.
Hint: I dashcam record every transaction and am not afraid to go to the local news. I win, always.

lol this is the first step... the only two upgrades on my plan are for two phones that dont have a data plan at all... we would have to add the data plan on there then cancel it once we activate the old one? yeah there's no way he will go for that...
so what if i get the phone without a contract, activate it on somebody else's line, (somebody who already has the new data plan) and then do the sim card thing?
sorry for typing so much.. i want this phone lol

Buying ebay phones?

I have to wait a little while until my current contract with Sprint is up before getting the Evo LTE. But I see them on ebay for about the same money as one would cost me in the store once I'm upgrade elegible. I'm wondering how the ebay phone process works to get it working on the Sprint network? I've only bought phones from Sprint and BB in the past. I know I need a clean ESN, but what I'm wondering is about activation and insurance. Does it cost me money to activate an ebay phone or can I just do it through the website tools? Is it possible to get insurance for the phone (aftermarket I'd assume)? If so, who do you recommend? Anything else to know about getting it working?

just tell them to turn on the insurance when you activate or they will "forget" to say anything. I bought an OG EVO from e-bay as long as the seller is reputable you will be ok.
I think that technically there's an activation fee, but from what I've seen before it's not that hard to bypass. If you're finding a phone on ebay that costs the same as the subsidized price, then I'd think very hard about what I was doing. These phones are normally 2-4x the price you pay when you get a subsidy; you're putting yourself up for some real risk if an unsubsidized phone costs as little as a subsidized new phone.
If you do buy it though and it does turn out to be a clean ESN/MEID, then first off congrats since you just dodged a massive bullet and saved tons of money, but also go and sign up for TEP, at least for a few months. The only reason I recommend this is because I'm still not 100% sure that the great deal you got is without a hidden problem that could jump out at you and eat your savings.

Activation fee is charged on a new line or upgrade...not an ESN swap
Plus one for hidden issues/bad ESN.
I would seriously question an EVO on the second hand market for $200-300

Thanks for the input so far. I don't think I can get TEP from Sprint on a phone I did not buy from them. I've found SquareTrade offers a warranty, though. We have used them before, so that is probably the way I'd go there.
There are a lot of these phones on ebay for under $250 right now. I figure $250 is about the break even point when I include the activiation fee and almot 10% sales tax we pay around here. I can't imagine they are all scams. I appreciate the concern, though.

Cool. Good to know.
I look at Craigslist and Ebay almost daily to see what they're selling for. I have one and also the GSIII. One must go soon and if its the EVO, I don't think I'll get more than $300 for it. Some are selling brand new EVO's, well suppose to be, for $250 on CL. My opinion, which means nothing, thinks that maybe the EVO has a bad reputation right now from the people that swapped them out for the GSIII. Not sure.
Seems like the S3's are going for much more money. Could be it's because they work for every carrier?

one time i bricked a device and the guy i originally bot it from was able to fix it for a small fee.
The activation fee is only on new phones. It is only when the esn is first activated on sprint. So if I bought a new phone and activated the esn but left it new in box and then sold it to you there'd be no activation fee as the esn was already in sprints system

AT&T no contract pricing!

32GB - 599.99
64GB - 649.99
It's up on the ATT site now.
This makes me sad, i was really hoping for $550
checked att website pre-order your pricing is right but when check out it still ask for what plan to add? why is that?
So what exactly would be the benefit of buying the no-contract model from AT&T vs. buying the Developer Edition from HTC?
Obviously, none?
Maybe there are some crazy people who want the ATT model, not the unlocked Developer edition one?

I am paying full price, and am opting for the AT&T model over the developer version. Why? One word- SUPPORT. If there is any issue with the phone, I bring it in to AT&T and have them swap it out. Can't do that if I order the dev version from HTC. I had to swap my One X out something like 5 times. The peace of mind is worth dealing with a temporarily locked down phone.
you guys shouldn't complain, the phone costs the equivalent of 840USD here in France, probably many other European countries as well... and that's the 32gb version

Precisely! Besides, we'll have root soon enough given this crowd.
Talking tap from dis here brainy fone!
Being Canadian, I won't have easy access to the Dev version unless I can find one "reasonably priced" on eBay or CL (that isn't fraudulent!). Conversely, I can drive 90 minutes south to an AT&T store and get the AT&T version.
For the sake of clarity, Canadians do have access to the HTC One from at least 2 local carriers, but it's only the 32GB version at this point.
Price seems a bit high. I'm not eligible for an upgrade, but I could switch carriers to Verizon if they get the phone, pay the ETF fee, and still probably come out cheaper.

ha! That's what I'm doing too, I'm going to unlock mine and sell it with a White/Green Otterbox Defender for $550+ I just got it this week so I could sell it for the One, and the $100 from the HTC Trade-In would still give me a few dollars profit, and if I can score a HD Media Link then I can eBay that junk for $70 and buy a box of Magic The Gathering Cards 8)
How are you guys disappointed by the price? Considering that I paid $850 for my piece of junk 64gb iPhone 5, I think $650 for a BADASS 64gb HTC phone is quite the steal. I was expecting it to be $100 more and was quite surprised when I saw it was only $650. Happy day for me!

I'am planning on getting the htc one from the tmobile site and then canceling the plan that comes with it, seeing as i can't seem to buy the phone without some kind of monthly bill. . My cousin said if i did this they would close my account and lock my phone.
The reason I'am doing this is because I'am trying the $30 prepaid plan but I'am not sure which HTC One are compatible. I looked on htc's website but the 32GB version says its not compatible with Tmobile. I'd buy the 64GB version but I'am not sure if it has the correct bands as tmobile's prepaid plan. I haven't had a smartphone before so I don't know all the technical stuff yet.

They will just charge the early termination fee. Which, right away, will be huge. You're better off waiting with the contract a few months ago that fee is less. At six months it's $100 you have some math to do to find when it's cheaper. If you just jump ship, yeah they won't be happy because you got a phone for cheap... That's the reason for the fee

Just buy a Nexus 4 if you want to do the $30 month plan.
If you're going the pre-paid route you need a truly unlocked phone or you're not getting the freedom you're going for. Trying to pull a fast one on a carrier is not a good idea.

With T-mobiles new plans when you bu ya phone it is full price. Only they let you put part of it on the bill. The HTC One is 100 up front $20 on the bill for $580 total. Go into a store and bu ythe phone at full cost.

Depending on where you live, you may or may not be able to get 3G or "4G" (HSPA+) from T-Mobile using the unlocked/dev edition from HTC's website. If T-Mobile has LTE in your area though, the version HTC sells is fine for that. In either case, you will be more likely to get good reception from T-Mobile if you buy the T-Mobile version instead of the unlocked version.
I definitely recommend going into a store and seeing if they will sell you one outright, and if they won't, I would ask them what happens if you buy one with a plan and then cancel the plan immediately, or at least call customer service and ask. I doubt they would do anything as dramatic as blacklisting your IMEI (i.e. making it so you can't use the phone you bought on their network), but you will probably be charged for a prorated day's worth of service, plus the $35 activation fee. I suspect the lack of standard two-year contracts and ETFs mean that is all you would pay, though.
Bought mine at walmart. No service. $650 I will use mine with solavei.

If this is the new plan pricing, you can pay off the phone and leave, but you need to be sure and unlock the phone first. On their new plans you must pay in full if you have monthly charges for buying the phone. It is a form of loan that has to be paid back. If you attempt to break that it will show up on your credit report as a bad loan.
If it is some kind of classic plan, the early termination fee will bite hard.

So much misinformation....
You can get it from a Tmobile store at full price without a plan. Just do that.
Also if you start a plan you have 2 options. Pay in full or put it in monthly payments. If you cancel your account it doesn't "hit your credit as a bad loan". It will simply apply what is left to be paid on the phone to the next bill. If you Dont pay that bill THEN it will effect your credit. Tmobiles new plans also have no contract, no termination fee, and no activation fee
You will not be able to purchase online right now without a new plan or adding a line. That may change in the future but supply is constrained right now and they are using this as a technique I guess.
Here is what I did: I purchased a sim kit from the tmobile site. I activated it online and chose the $30 plan. Then initially I tried to order online. I even tried to order with a new line but ran into issues with fulfillment that tmobile still has not solved. I was going to cancel the line after getting the phone which would have been my right since I paid the full amount.
Nevertheless I found a store in Arlington, VA that actually had the phone in stock. I walked in and purchased the phone and gave them my number that I got when I activated the $30 plan. The phone was $30 higher in the store then on the site but I am working that with tmobile to get compensated.
By the way, the phone works great on the $30 plan. I get constant HSPA here in DC and some spotty LTE.

I was assuming that the customer was attempting to walk away from the loan, which would hit the credit. Also, t-mobile isn't selling the phones without some kind of plan, and won't issue an unlock code until after the buyer remorse period.
Edit. The contract states that off you leave t-mobile the balance is due in full. I think Sprint has a different policy.

So what happens if you get them and can't pay the early termination fee? Just hits your credit or what?
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Goes to collection agency and hits credit
So go to tmobile.com and get the $30 plan SIM. They will mail the SIM and you can use a friends phone to activate it. Go to a local tmobile or Wal-Mart when you can find one. Tell the cashier or whoever you have a prepaid number already and just want to buy the phone. And you got it.

there is no early termination fee. tmobile is strictly a no contract company now unless you are still under a previous contract with them. just went there friday and bought my mom a gs3 with the cheapest plan and since i paid the phone in full i didnt have to pay another bill if she wanted to take the phone else where for service
There's a ton of misinformation here. If you finance the phone through T-Mobile and don't pay, they WILL blacklist (and sell the balance owed to a bill collector) which means you cannot use it on their network or any of their MVNO partners. You CAN unlock it to be used on AT&T or one of their MVNOs.
If you sign a contract such as through Wal-Mart or another third party, it won't be blacklisted but it will hit your credit because it still goes back to a bill collector.
Pick your poison.

Their site says 40 days for the unlock code. I believe the buyer's remorse is 30 days (at least it used to be 30).

AT&T $100 Trade-in Promotion Starting

I just wanted to post this for all of you considering getting a new phone on AT&T, such as the One, S4, Blackberry, etc. According to what I have read, it looks like AT&T is starting a promotion tomorrow that will give an instant $100 or more credit toward a new phone of your choice when you trade in your old working smart phone, ( 3 years old or less). This may help in the decision making process for many people.

I just posted an article on this on our site! LOL It's a pretty good deal!
It will push me back into the store tomorrow. I was in the store today and almost bought one, but I wanted to consider it a little longer and wait until the weekend. I am done thinking about it, lol.
well i already traded in a phone directly through HTC for $100 and its gonna be for a visa prepaid card. plus you have to do this in store and they dont have the 64GB version available at stores. i guess its a good deal for those that missed the cutoff for the HTC deal though.

I actually signed up today and received a code. My 8525 qualifies for HTC, but not for AT&T.

If I bought my One brand new from craigslist could I use this to get an S4 or another One?

Cool, so this is retroactive?
I got my One on release day, so still within the 14 days - if I go back to the store, they should credit me, right? I have a Nokia 900 that I would gladly trade in for an easy $100, lol.

An 8525? Wow. That is old. HTC was taking that for a trade in? I wish I would have known. I could have dug mine out of the drawer.
I had the One..exchanged it for the S4 and came back to the One. Anyone that that has the S4, should definitely get the One if you can, while the bootloader is still unlockable
I'd rather go on swappa or any number of other sites and sell my old kit for a lot more than $100 unless it's an old phone. Just about any decent, present day smartphone is worth more than $100. They're just catering to those who either don't know there options or don't want to deal with trying to sell on their own.

From everything I've been told, it's $100 minimum.
Just wanted to say, bought my One two weeks today and went back to the AT&T store to see if I could get in on this promo. Not a problem at all, traded in an old HTC Inspire 4G and they gave me the $100 credit, which by request, they applied to my bill. What's great is, average selling price on eBay for the Inspire is around $80.

i just told them that i see that you guys have the trade in promotion going that you get 100 dollars for trading in your used phone. i actually read this thread wrong which is why i called inthe first place lol. because i thought they give you 100 dollars on top of what they already give you. the wife traded her iphone 5 and i traded a nexus 4. the rep gave me a 200 dollar credit no questions asked. probably because she can't see on her system exactly what phones we traded in.
