[Q] Making USB Gamepads work - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry if this is the wrong section, I wasn't quite sure...
What is required in the Android OS to support USB Gamepads?
I have purchased an Android TV Box from Chinavasion (http://www.chinavasion.com/china/wh...xt_-_DNLA_Miracast_Dual_Core_CPU_4x_USB_HDMI/) which has 4 USB ports. While it's mostly going to be used to watch TV, I thought it might be nice to play a few games on it.
I can plug keyboards and mice into it and they work just fine. But gamepads don't work at all. I understand that from honeycomb gamepads are supposed to be supported natively so I guess there must be something missing in the firmware?
I have installed USB Device Info app. The gamepads are not listed in the "Android" tab, but do show up in the Linux tab (though to be fair, the same is true of the keyboard and mouse).
Any ideas?

anybody?

well only some aps support gamepads natively. like dead trigger. but for all other apps there is six axis. you have to be rooted to use it but i love it. google it if you want to learn more about it an how to use it.
---------------------
Give me a thanks if i helped
Lg Lucid running Cm10
w/ Cm10 Kernel
Asus Tf700 running Cromi-X 4.6.5
w/ Max's v4 kernel

OK it appears that I need to find a working joydev.ko for my device which I can then start with insmod
Apparently this device is bassed on an allwinner chipset.
The Model number is A18_VGA-20
The Android version is reported as 4.2.2 (though I'm not sure this is accurate)
The firmware revision is BOX_20130425
The Kernal version is 3.3.0
and the Build Numer is wing_A18_VGA-eng 4.2.2
With that information am I able to go about locating the source and compiling the module myself?

Thanks but that appears to be for bluetooth controllers only. My device doesn't have bluetooth.

[Q] steelseries FREE mobile wireless controller

Today I've bought the steelseries FREE gamepad for playing games on my HTC One X+.
I'm running the latest 4.2.2 AOKP version (20130224) by maxwen (I've also tried it on official Slim Bean 4.2.1 by bedalus), but the phone doesn't seem to be able to connect to the gamepad. When I try to pair it the gamepad is moved to the list of pairing-devices, then it says "connecting..." for about one second and then nothing happens and the device isn't connected.
Then I've tried to pair it to my iPad (i know there are two different settings on the controller for Android and iOS and of course I changed them before attempting to connect to different devices) and it worked fine, but my HOX+ doesn't build up a connection.
Is it because I'm running a Custom ROM, because in all of the reviews of the gamepad I've seen the people were using stock roms (or roms build on stock roms maybe? but I don't think so)?
Can anybody help me connecting the gamepad to my phone?
Edit: Now I've downloaded the steelseries app from the play store, but also nothing happens. The gamepad is still under the pairing-devices, the app acts like there was connected a steelseries gamepad at least once but the log is empty and I also can't configurate anything.
Edit: Now I've tried out various ROMs, 4.2 ones: CM10.1, AOKP, SlimBean and 4.1 ones: CM 10, ParanoidAndroid. And the connection was built up on all of the 4.1 ROMs but on none of the 4.2 ROMs. So I guess there's something wrong with the Android 4.2 ROMs or the gamepad isn't able to connect to 4.2 ROMs.. So is there any possibility (maybe a hidden setting or something) to play my games with my gamepad on a 4.2 ROM because actually I don't want to miss the features of 4.2...
Have you tried a sense rom?
Sent from my HTC One X+ using xda premium
Yes, but there are no Sense rom available with Android 4.2 and the AOSP roms based on 4.1 have always been working. Found out it was a issue based on Bluetooth in Android 4.2 (has been completely reworked, some profiles are missing, as well as the HDI-profile which is used for things like that).
But the next kernel from maxwen will have this feature implented so the problem is solved now and the gamepad (as well as a ps3 controller or somthing like that) will probably also work on every 4.2 AOSP rom available for the HOX+, I think the thread can be closed?

MXQ TV box based on S805, how to make USB gamepad work?

I bought this TV box from Aliexpress.com. It has Android 4.4.2 operating system and is based on Amlogic S805 chip. I have already rooted the OS.
USB keyboard, mouse and stick work as you would expect, but I cannot get generic USB gamepad to work with any of the emulators. I have tried downloading bunch of apps from Play Store, GamepadIME etc. I also tried gamepad tester which displayed nothing when I used the gamepad so I guess there is no driver? The controller is fine, I actually tried known good Xbox 360 controller and didn't work either.

What's up man? I tried to follow your guide on my MXQ S805 (looks just like the image on your blog) and I'm keep getting some errors, could you help me out?
I tried to adjust the path to the files but the script still won't find them, my box is factory rooted, root works fine.
I have limited knowledge to Unix/Android internals so any help is much appreciated.
Please check the screen shots attached.

Never got this working so decided to install another rom with built-in support and it worked perfect, both wired and wireless XBOX 360 controllers.

Hi Zulu, I think I saw someone get a bit of hate for this suggestion with your Nexus Player LolliRock ROM but is it possible to install the Leanback Launcher onto this full Android ROM and emulate most of the Android TV experience? My reason would be that I want the freedom of the full Play Store app and settings but I do like the Android TV interface for use from my couch.
Also, presumably this requires an unlocked bootloader but not root because I've been struggling to root my 16 GB model.
Thanks for your work.

Sure that you can. The leanback launcher is a stupid launcher like others but just a little more stupid because not support mouse. But you can start Android TV apps also without leanback launcher. http://www.apkmirror.com/?s=leanback+launcher&post_type=apps_post
You can start the leanback launcher also like an app if you create a shortcut like in this video https://youtu.be/NMqz8e33oq8 So when you install Android TV apps, you can have all in one bad place that is the leanback launcher. Without create a shortcut for every Android TV app. ( 10 in total )
I prferer Googl Now Launcher.
People not understand that you need just more accessibility on apps and this depend from developers.
You can control an app with a mouse, dpad or controller if a developer want this.
After that you can use Android, Android TV or also Android NOOB.
One thing is sure, Android TV is limited on purpose and you can't have all apps from Google Play.
The 320 dpi in build.prop is not compatible with many beautiful apps also if you sideload.
Every standard app is better and faster than the leanback version. Try standard youtube and leanback youtube to understand.
For me the life is too short to waste time with directional keys. I never used a classic Smart TV for this reason and all my TV are Smart TV.
For this reason i like full Android.
You think that if Android TV was better than Android I lose most of my free time to build these firmware ? I'm not so stupid.
But do not worry i appreciate and respect the requests of all
To have Youtube at 1080p and up read this post

I suggest to read also the comments. to understand really what i think.
I am very tired of the forced closures made to defend the economic interests of a few.
Many of these closures are also passed off as security but are just violations of the rules for fair competition between companies.
I hope I am not overlooking something due to lack of sleep, but am I correct in saying the nvidia game controller that came with the box doesn't work in this rom? My box isn't recognizing the controller after flashing rom, gapps, and su
After reading a little closer I see it can be made to work if connected via usb, but I much rather have it work wireless since I use the box connected to a network cable and wireless network connection doesn't pose any interference for me. Is there a way to restore the wireless controller connection?

For the controller in wireless mode: ( wired works well )
Request it to Nvidia sayng:
Please Nvidia if you sell an hardware controller, why you not publish the drivers for Android, Windows and Linux like all other companies that sell an hardware controller ? Or explain how to add it in a custom firmware ? You publish also the source code, why not publish it as closed binaries like others parts proprietary ?
In the second post you can find an alternative to use the controller in wireless mode.
It work better than native wireless mode, everyone can compare also in Nvidia Grid. ( Grid is beautiful also with my bad adsl )
And don't forget that you can use also any other standard controller ( also a 5$ chinese controller ), because the voice search capability and audio routing is possible in this firmware in many ways. The smarter way to make voice search in google now ( the full google now ) is with a webcam attached or with a bluetooth headsets. It's smarter because you can do this without nothing in your hands. Just sayng: " OK Google " + videochats in hangout and more...
Unfortunally i can't solve this for now. The only one thing that not work, but not for my incompetence.
I don't want use bad words to explain better why this behaviour. But smart people can understand.
Has anyone tried this on a shield tablet? I would assume you ca get a close experience. Also are the Nvidia apps bundled in the rom(controller, grid, game stream)

I like this ROM, but I have come across a few things that might make me go back to stock. The problem with wireless game controller not working unless tethered to the device (Not zulu99's fault), and Doom 3 will no longer run. You start it and it immediately just goes back to the home screen without any error to reference. I downloaded the stock image and am still debating as to whether I want to go back to stock or not.. I didn't say it before and I should have, but thanks for all the time and effort you have invested in this ROM.

This firmware is for Shield Console, not for Shield Tablet.
Shield hub that have also grid inside can be downloaded directly from goole play.
for game stream i can work on the nvidia proprietary apk, but i tested Screen Stream Mirroring app and it work.
You can also record your gameplay with any app for screen recording so this is not a problem.

Forgive my confusion but isn't the point of this rom to mimic the shield console on other android devices? I have the tablet and want to add the android TV experience to it and immersive mode. Wouldn't flashing this Tom accomplish that?

No i ported full Android to Shield Console, because on Android TV you are in a walled garden and you can't have all apps from google play
In Android Tv you have also by default density to 320 dpi that is not good for standard apps.
If you like immersive mode you can simply use xposed framework.
Thanks for the clarification. With that said how can I get the android TV experience with Google now search on my tablet? Is it possible?

Note 5 & Xbox360 wireless controller won't work

Hello,
Yesterday i've bought a wireless xbox 360 controller with wireless USB adapter. I tried it on my PC and it worked flawlessly - all games are responsive and auto-detect my controller. But it's a different story with my phone, i saw people connecting x360 controllers to their android devices too so i decided to do the same.
I own a Galaxy Note 5 (rooted, note7/S7edge port ROM & custom kernel). Before i've been using a cheap (~7$) controller, but most of the games did not recognize it, even if they did, the key mapping was really bad and not all of the buttons work.
When i connect the receiver through OTG cable to my Note5 and pair it with the x360 wireless controller, it keeps flashing (it is paired), but the phone does not recognize it - i cannot interact with the screen using the controller buttons (although with mouse/keyboard/cheap-controller it works).
I found out that i only had a USB wired xbox360 controller .kl and .kcm files in /system/usr/keylayout and keychar folders, so i found some guides -> i copied these files (changed the product number to Wireless X360 controller's) using "Terminal Emulator for android" with super user access and gave them specific permissions (chmod 644). I also checked if the permissions were granted ("ls -l" command) and restarted my phone. According to all of the guides, it should work after these steps but i still can't use the controller - it keeps flashing and is not recognized. Are there other steps/guides or maybe something i should know about Galaxy Note5 and Xbox 360 wireless controller connection?
I'm really desperate after 0% of success. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
EDIT: I just checked this setup with my old HTC One M7 and it worked from the first time. I really would like to hear that it is also possible with my newer Note 5 :/
I solved it!
!!! I SOLVED THE PROBLEM AND MADE MY GALAXY NOTE 5 NATIVELY SUPPORT XBOX360 WIRELESS CONTROLLER !!!
(S6 & S6 EDGE & S6 EDGE PLUS INCLUDED & AND BY NATIVE I MEAN WITHOUT ANY KEYMAPPING APPS LIKE USB/BT)
And now to everyone who has a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and have problems connecting Xbox 360 USB or Wireless controller, i would like to share my solution, just to save time for some people with a similar problem.
If you have an older device, it's easy and there are many tutorials out there, but for people like me that have a newer Samsung's smartphone like Note 5, S6/edge/active etc. there is one thing you need to know - these devices no longer have native support for wireless xbox360 controller. After hours of searching, testing keymapping applications, editing system's key input files, creating and exploring them, i tried to install xbox360 driver module by myself, but my system (through Terminal Emulator) would not let me do that. After all that "trying" to make it work and some more googling i found out that the problem actually is not here. The real problem is the Kernel. The Kernel is the thing that controls everything on your device. So, i spent a couple of minutes searching for a Kernel that has full xbox 360 support and i came up with arter97's Kernel (I will post links in the end). A fact worth mentioning is that i have a Note7 Port ROM installed on my Note5 and that was where i made a mistake, i soft bricked my Note7. Before i've been using Minotaurus V10 custom ROM and Infinity v1.0 Kernel. Important info: I updated only my Kernel and left ROM, my data and apps untouched. At the first try i downloaded arte97's Kernel for the Note5 (n920cig) and soft-bricked the phone, i let it boot up, but that took ~35mins and was still loading, i couldn't turn off my phone (solution: there was samsung logo on the screen flashing and power button didn't work > i was able to enter download mode > select "No" which leads to reboot my phone > from there enter recovery and restore backup i've created before using TWRP recovery - that's how you un-soft-brick your phone). After this accident i found that the arte97 has a specific Kernel edition for galaxy Note5 that has Note7 Port rom installed, which was my case, so i gave it another shot, downloaded the Kernel (-N7/Grace UI Port'ed edition for N5) and the first boot-up took around 2-3minutes. The device works just like before switching Kernels, fast and smooth. Time to test the xbox360 controller - BOOM! it connects instantly allowing me to interact with the screen (using microsoft xbox360 wireless controller & official microsoft xbox360 USB receiver). I open up the game (Riptide GP2) and everything works without any adjustments, i checked the controls, the game automatically shows the image of a x360 controller. I also had "Dead Trigger 2" installed - same story, i can assign any button to do any action in the game. I've finally achieved what i was trying to do!
Here are the links i've been using:
My OS: https://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/development/rom-minotaurusrom-v1-note7-port-t3461731
Arter97's Kernel with native xbox360 controller support (I upgraded my Note5 to the v22.0 version):
XDA-Developers page: https://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/development/arter97-kernel-galaxy-note-5-t3189907
Official page (there is a link to this page in the xda page): arter97's Android studio
I have also have had these files installed on my phone before changing kernels (Vendor_045e_Product_0291 = wired x360 controller, Product_0719 = wireless, so i've created a .kl file with number 0719 and i downloaded a key character mapping file for x360 wireless, which ends with .kcm):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29232978#post29232978
Before changing Kernels i made it work using USB/BT app. All the buttons were working using an older version of USB/BT, but the problem was that it was not comfortable enough for me (having to change keyboard every time & stick directions are registered as buttons, so in first person shooting games you can't aim slowly, it always goes at the same fast speed). If you are like me and want to use xbox360 wireless controller like "plug and play", you gotta check this thing with Kernels (^^), if you don't want to risk and think the emulator will be OK, i will leave a link to a USB/BT Joystick center tutorial bellow. (The guy in the video is using Galaxy S6 active, but my Note 5 also worked, so any other S6 will work)
https://youtu.be/I9fvLZMd9bE
Hope this helps!
Also tested Minecraft, Game of Thrones & The Walking Dead by Telltale and GTA: San Andreas - all games work with the wireless xbox 360 controller from the 1st try without any adjusting and the controls are 1:1 just like using my xbox360 console.
I know this is quite a while ago and I'm trying to get my Xbox remote to work on my android. So far Arter's kernel is the only one I see with support for the Xbox controller. Unfortunately I'm on nougat rom and the arter kernel only supports marshmallow. So now I'm stuck. You didn't by any chance see a kernel for the note 5 nougat?
Seems like arter's kernel has stopped being updated

Luckily Android Central informs me about my posts via e-mail. I am sorry, i haven't seen a nougat kernel with x360 module installed. I'm still rocking a 6.0.1 marshmallow with arter's kernel + minotaurus V10 rom and they together work flawlessly - minotaurus rom has so much customization abilities that i didn't even think about upgrading to a newer OS as there are none that provide such huge amount of variety.
You can try searching not only for a kernel with x360 drivers already installed, but you can look for specific ROMs that come with their own kernel (which would have xbox360 drivers on it). That's the only recommendation i can give you right now.

True. I also used the minotaurus before and it was an awesome rom. But I was having tons of restarts and issues with magisk so I went up to nougat to sort it all out. Eventually, as you learn, you understand what was the issues and all. I actually still have the minotaurus rom on my pc. I should consider swapping back to mm maybe. Using a controller for games would make a massive difference. Well thanks for reply and info! Appreciate it. I did ask some of the other kernel creators if they would include a module for the controller. Let's hope they do!

Joydev.ko for Kernel 3.4.39

Title pretty much says it.
So i'm trying to use my Logitech Dual Action (Pretty much a F310 without the XInput-DInput switch) controller on my IRULU X7 tab, but i don't have joydev.ko, the required driver, My Android version is 4.2.2 and kernel is 3.4.39, My tab is also rooted.
I guess something i could do to keep a certain app always running would also fix this problem (Because of Game Keyboard and it's emulated joystick, but "Amazing Frog?" a game that i'm trying to play, always closes it because it needs more RAM)
Exact build date is Sat Jul 5 12:06:06 CST 2014
I would try to compile it myself but i have no knowledge of where to get this kernel nor any idea of how to setup it up or compile it.
If anyone can compile joydev.ko and send it to me or give me instructions on how to do it i would be very thankful.
Joydev.ko
I already found the Source Code in question but my internet is running at about 5kbps, so it's going to take 6 hours.
Anyone else could please help? All i'm asking for is that someone compiles it and then send me Joydev.ko
Here's the link codeload(dot)github(dot)com/hno/linux-3.4-sunxi-allwinner/zip/master
Anyone?
hi, I'm having a similar issue with Logitech F310 gamepad on an Android streaming box running kernel 3.10.0, Android version 4.4.2, the controller is not recognized.
I downloaded USB/BT Joystick Center GOLD as mentioned by another contributor, but still no avail.
on a side note, my other Logitech Precision Gamepad is working on the same streaming box.
I'm interested to know how to get F310 working as well.
