Hi guys,
Does anyone know where the water sensors (white round strips) are on HTC One? I accidentally dropped my HTC One in water. It started vibrating and I could not turn it off. It turned off once the battery got drained. I am not sure if I should try to plug it in. Its just over a month that I bought it..but I dont have the accidental insurance...I wonder how HTC knows if the cellphone (in particular HTC One as it is pain in the ass to open according to ifixit) has water damage or not.
Thoughts??

just call att and tell them then you want the insurance added. tell them you didn't realize it was just over a month. they always honor it. then next day do a claim.

I am not sure if you should try turning it on either. Not do I know about how htc detects water damage.
My sister-in-law spilled some soda on her phone and put it in a jar of dry rice (surrounding the phone with rice entirely) to dry it out. It worked well for her, but I don't know how effective it is in general. Nevertheless, it might be worth a shot.
When I took my phone in for a replacement they checked what color it was under the glass for the flash. Maybe that could be it somehow?
Pull out the SIM card slot. Put it a container filled with uncooked rice and seal it up. Make sure you bury the phone into the rice so it sucks out the moisture from the phone. Leave it there for about 3-4 days. Take it out, place SIM card back in, plug in charger and see if the red notification light turns on. If it does, it means its charging and let it charge for about 30 minutes before powering it on.

I did the rice thing already for 2 days. Plugged in this morning. The red charging light starts flickering and then has been blinking ever since. Not a solid red light like its supposed to be during charging. Phone doesnt get charged. Tried holding power button for 10-15 sec with no luck.
I am assuming if I call HTC, they wont honor the warranty no more...Am I correct?

I would try AT&T they may swap it out without checking. HTC probably will check.

When I called for service they mentioned the same thing. They asked if the yellow around the flash was red at all.

The same is happening to my phone right now after i kept it in rice for 3 days. What happened to ur phone then?
The flash is the water sensor, as others have mentioned or guessed. I was at the AT&T store for a sim card swap and casually asked. I know the tech well and he told me where it was himself. Also, the dry ice trick is more reliable in my experience.
You can use silica desiccant in a bag for much much better results than rice. You typically find small packets in shoeboxes, etc. (No, I am not encouraging you to take the packets out of all the shoeboxes at wal-mart. But if you did, you'd confuse the hell out of the security personnel if they watched you on camera =P) You can refresh the desiccant pebbles by heating your oven to about 300 and then turning it off & leaving the packets on a cookie sheet inside. This will purge the moisture from them and re-activate them.

It was in the toilet for a second or two. I then took it out immediately and turned it off, wiped off any excess water, and left it in a bowl of rice, rotating it every few hours, for 48 hours. I have tried to turn it on this morning, but have had no luck. The screen is just blank, and the phone does not react when I put the charger in. The led green light doesn't come on to say it's charging, and neither a laptop of computer are recognising it when I plug it in. Does anyone have any idea what's wrong with it, or is it just completely dead? It's a new phone on contract, and I really can't afford to get a new phone. Or does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to repair it?
Any advice or tips would be really appreciated!

I have been working for a sub that repairs phones for AT&T for several years. Water damaged phones do not get repaired as there is no way to get all the water and the contaminates that it migrates to the PCB out from under all the parts and connectors. If the Rice or other suggestions did not work then the phone is history and must be replaced at your cost if you don't have insurance. If you have insurance just be honest pay the deductible and get the refurb the will give you.
Thats your only options.
The ones water Indicator is actually inside the flash lens. Look next to the camera lens and see if that's a pinkish color or a off white- yellowish. Pink is water. There's also a small one inside the Sim slot that you can't really access or see. Good luck

Like the stupid idiot I am, I took my phone for a swim while it quietly rested in my pocket. It's been in my pocket for about 5 minutes until I had noticed. I quickly jumped out, tried to turn it on, but it didn't want to. I took it to my house and took out the battery, the sd card, and the sim card for it to dry as well. However, I heard that if you put in your charger, it messed up everything? If it does, I'm so done for. My warranty doesn't cover water damages. Other than letting the phone and battery dry out in the sun, is there any more advice I should follow? It won't turn on at all. When I take out the back cover, I do see some water drops INSIDE the phone, and I can't get that to dry at all.

5 minutes is way too long for it to work. I lost a phone least year in less than 30 seconds in the pool. Sorry but i truly think you need to figure out how to get a new phone.

I'd say it may work but it may take a while. A couple years ago I accidentally took my phone swimming with me. It was in a while, too. Probably 10-15 minutes. It wouldn't work. Dried. It wouldn't work. For some random reason, months later I tried firing it up. It worked. It's now been donated to the kids to play around with. When it decided to start working again, I'm not positive, but it's still working 2 years later.
For those wondering, it was... I believe.. a Motorolla Krazr. Not exactly a smart phone, though. Best of luck.

Yeah when phone is on/ battery in it and water hits it for more the 20sec ur screwed. I dropped my tbolt in sink immediately pulled battery and stuck in rice after a couple hrs It worked.

Took mine swimming 3 weeks after i got it and didn't have insurance. For whatever reason it didn't carry over from my dinc. After a few days in the sun and a few days in rice I was able to boot it up just long enough to unroot.
Went *****in at vzw store that my insurance should have been on my account. They treated it as a manufacture warranty, I forked over the 90 bucks like it was an insurance claim and walked out the store with a brand new bolt.

Whatever you do don't plug it in. Let it thoroughly dry out for at least a couple days, possibly using the rice method or placing it near a household item used to remove moisture from the air (sodium hydroxide if you have it). After a good few days try powering it on with just the battery.
It could also help to put a fan by it.
This worked with my friends iphone.
Note: anything you do is at your own risk.
Let it dry. My son went swimming with his nexus one and didn't notice until an hour later. We pulled the battery, used a vacuum to suck out any water and let it sit in a bowl of rice for 3 days. After turning it on it would not hold a charge. Replaced the battery and bingo good as new.
Your phone will mosf likely short circuit and kill power immediately when water hits it. This why you should not try to turn it on until you are certain it is dry.

Did both of the things you told me not to do: tired to turn it on when it was wet and put it in the charger when it was SLIGHTLY wet, it was before i put it in rice.
Still gonna keep it in the rice and pray tho.
yeah, you did about everything you shouldn't do with wet electronics.
My wife washed my phone a few years ago in the washing machine. Pulled the battery, put everything in a bag of rice for a week. Charged it up and it came back to life. Screen was a little off for a while, but over time it came back to normal.
I've read you can also put it in the oven on warm for a couple of hours.
I put my old Motorola Q in the oven after my mom made a Turkey and it was cooling down... worked like a charm after

My wife dropped her Samsung i730 in her glass of ice tea. It was only in there for a few seconds, but it was long enough. I dried it out the best I could, and put it in a bag of rice for 3 days. After the 3 days, it fired right up! I had to take a toothbrush and a little water to un-stick the buttons, but we used it for another year.
I was separating all of my old cell phones a few weeks ago to donate, and I came across my i730. I plugged it in, and it still works!
Give it time, you may be surprised that it will be ok.

On another note,
I fried my TB a month after I got it. Swimming as well. Tried drying it fast, vacuum and heat. Let sit for few hours and my patience ran out. Turned it on, and a sizzling sound came from the phone. Yup, bad news. I had insurance though so I shelled out the $100 for a replacement and chalked it up as a lesson learned.

I may have done my phone in this time... it fell into a tub of water for no more than three seconds while on. I think this may do what all my tinkering/Odin-ing/Heimdall-ing never managed to do. I grabbed it an took the battery out and I am currently in the process of taking it apart using the little blue tool that I got along with the new ffc camera that I have yet to install.
Has anyone dropped this phone in water while on and it not be negatively affected?
There are special items for this, but most people suggest sealing it up in rice... air tight.

have saved many a phone from davy jones' locker with this method.
My friend's Vibrant fell on a bucket of water and it still worked.
And my Vibrant has washed it's face with me in the mornings and eaten ice cream (I think it wanted to try the next update, but the wrong way)
I think it will survive.
Just don't turn it on or anything until you are completely sure it's try.

The phone is currently completely taken apart and in a bed of brown rice inside a tightly sealed tupperware container. I shall post results of the procedure later... although I don't know how much longer I should wait. I'll give it at least a day, but I'm open to suggestions. I guess I should say that when I opened the phone I didn't notice that water had made it anywhere onto the motherboard, but it's possible that I missed it.
Mine took a dive into the toilet and didnt have any issues. The seal is pretty tight and the air inside the case doesnt escape through the USB/Headphone jack easily. If there was no water in the battery compartment you are probably safe but 24 hours in rice was still done just in case. Been about a month now.

Mine survived a quick dip in the pool.....I feel rice saved it....3 days in a ziplock bag of rice completely disassembled......works fine,no issues whatsoever

Mine too decided it was a good day for a dip in the pool on Monday... I simply took the battery, SIM and SD cards out, wrapped it in 8 socks and threw it in the dryer with a load of dry laundry for 15min...
It wouldn't turn on with the power button... so I plugged it into my computer and the charge indicator came one. From then on, everything worked great!
Mine was in my pocket and i got pushed in the pool.. I pulled the battery and waited like 3 days turned it back on and it works but i got lines from top to bottom and it fades in and out.. It works as my test phone..

I was wondering what the verdit was do you have a phone or a paper weight?
Works perfectly! I put the phone back together finally last night and went ahead and installed the new ffc I bought a while back, and it is back up and running as if nothing happened.

I dropped my Vibrant into water for 3 seconds, but after drying it out the touchscreen wasn't functional. After the first reboot... stucked at Vibrant logo, not being able to move ahead. Odin finds my phone in downdload mode, I can reflash roms, kernels , but still won't reboot into one. Stucks at bootloader. Is it hardware broken?

Yours is toast. Same thing happened to mine had. Nothing would allow it past the vibrant logo. Used my insurance.

The water indicator didn't turn pink. So even though I have no insurance or waranty, I still hope to have o chance to recover my Vibrant. I took it to a guy who says he'll write the bootloader directly on the CPU, not through the USB cable like I did We'll see what happens, I have no other option.Thanks for your replies
Last week, my friend's EVO 3D was water damaged. He was going to throw it out but I offered him $25 for it and he gave it to me. When I try turning it on, it vibrates, the buttons at the bottom light up but the screen doesn't seem to turn on. Is there any chance of fixing it?
Hmm well it might be but It's hard to tell if the board got damaged or just the screen. If u really want to fix it buy one off eBay or Craigslist with a broken screen and swap internals. At least that's what I'd do

^^ awesome idea forgot to mention that rice is like a miracle worker I've saved many a phone that have taken full swims just by throwing them in a bag of rice for a couple days

there is a chance. but probably would require an extensive knowledge of circuitry and i'm guessing since you don't know where to even start... probably not going to happen. lol

LOL. Yeah, I thought it was a long shot. I'll try the rice thing for a couple of days but I'm not getting my hopes up. I thought it was worth a try for $25
Mine survived being totally submerged in water when it fell in a puddle. at first the screen didn't work at all, then it flickered, then it had some lines on the screen, then after one day it was fully functional in every aspect haha, all I did was put it in rice, and all is well... Now I just wish I had waited to file an insurance claim, as now I'm stuck with a refurbished with 1.5

Well I would investigate some "tear down youtube videos" get the basic layout of the internals. Etc etc, maybe look into replacing the screen/digitizer
After you dry it out if screen still doesn't turn on, turn it on and leave it on for awhile, with caution... See if goes up in flames...would make an epic video if it does btw, but if something is damaged I would assume it would short out, and fry some stuff... Vibration means something is gettin power...

It's too late now to do the rice trick. If there was water on the board and the user tried to turn it on, the damage has already been done and chips were probably fried.

the "with caution" part, here, should simply be don't turn it on at all. turning it on with water or moisture still present internally could damage it beyond repair (if that isn't the case already).
pull the battery out, and throw it in a very large, sealed Ziploc, bag of rice for a few days, maybe even longer - and cross your fingers. if it doesn't work after that. I wouldn't put anymore time and certainly not anymore money into it.
and yes it was worth a shot for only 25 bucks, for sure. I would have given it a try for that price.
I had a HD2 with the same problem. your screwed dude. Sorry. No amount rice is going to save that phone.
Yep, I think the only thing that saved mine, when it was totally submerged, is that the battery was completely dead, so nothing got power.

Take the phone apart and try this, with just the board, an alcohol (as pure as you can get) soak for 2-5mins then air dry (let sit for 1-2hours). Reassemble and test. As the alcohol evaporates, it extracts water out of the circuitry. But, as it has been mentioned, powering it on prior to a full dry may have already fried it.

Theres no science behind water damage, if you've turned it on already then it's too late for any measures to be taken.
In future, if you drop it in water, remove it straight away, remove everything from the phone, try to get as much water out as you can, then pop it in a bowl of dry rice for as long as you can, months would be best, simply assume that the phone is gone and do not switch it on until you can assure that it is completely dry, any other measures you can take seldom work but some have had results, the rice trick is as good as it gets tbh.
Avoid water like the plague with your phone.

So I bought the HTC Evo 3D and had it for about 20 hours before I drowned it in a cup of tea (yes I was drunk) where it sat for a couple of minutes before it was discovered. As soon as it was discovered, I turned it off and removed the battery. It sat over night band in the morning I turned it back on and it works. But I immediately realized that there was still water at the bottom of the screen. I again turned it off and removed the battery and it has been sitting in rice for over a week. There is still water at the bottom of the screen! I'm so frustrated! I don't have a cell phone repair place where I live and I have no experience with working on cell phones. I have even tried using a blow dryer a little but am worried that the heat will harm the screen. My sister suggested just trying to used the phone and the heat from the phone working would evaporate the left over water but I am also afraid of frying things too. Any suggestions???
You turned it on while it was still wet. It's done for. Time for a new phone.
Sugar or colorants that were in the tea could have made that mark on the bottom of the screen

Exactly. Even if you get all the water out, you likely fried the board somewhere. If you still want an evo 3d, they are pretty old now, you should be able to get one on ebay for under 50 bucks.
You could attempt to take your phone apart and clean all the internals with rubbing alcohol but chances are your phone is past-out for ever
(Don't ask me for help as I couldn't care if your phone explodes, eh! )
It locked up once and I restarted it.
Locked up again after a few minutes, shut itself down and no matter what I do, I can't get it to restart.
Kind of a suck way to start the day.
Just this afternoon picked up my shiny new replacement from Best Buy...totally new shipment which had just came in. I added no apps and 15 minutes later the first random reboot. It rebootted7 times in two hours and then just t turned itself off and won't come back to life.
No...the battery isn't dead.
Plug it into any charger and the charging light doesn't come on.

Phone is fully charged. It was working fine during a call and when I hung up the call, the screen locked up then quickly blinked twice and that was that.
I tried pushing the power switch for almost two minutes and noting happened.
Better now than when I am traveling for work I suppose.
Take it back before the grace period. Lolz?
My tpu case seems to be making the power button stick causing reboots. If you have a case, take it off and I would also remove the shiny top back cover and try again. If that doesn't work, call for replacement.

If you take the shiny back cover off you maybe removing something important. Look on the inside surface of the cover and you will see copper contact points. Is this the NFC antenna. I'm ignorant to how it works, just speculating.

I suggested taking it off just to try to get the phone to boot in case the power button us stuck. I didn't intend for him to leave it off forever

I did try it minus my TPU cover just in case that was the issue although the power button seems perfectly free..
Maybe they new camera will somehow magically be better

Well.....it sprang back to life all by itself sitting on my desk at work this morning (it is sitting there waiting for BB to call me and tell me they have a new replacement). It simply powered up, booted and came to life sitting there.
It now reboots a couple of times an hour just sitting there and at times actually turns Mobile Networks OFF all by itself.
Perhaps it is possessed?

Bad battery contacts?
Just this afternoon picked up my shiny new replacement from Best Buy...totally new shipment which had just came in. I added no apps and 15 minutes later the first random reboot. It rebootted7 times in two hours and then just t turned itself off and won't come back to life.
No...the battery isn't dead.
Plug it into any charger and the charging light doesn't come on.
Seriously....this is frustrating.

Yeah.....maybe that's my problem. My heart sunk with the first lockup and reboot. I said some rather ugly stuff to my phone in the car.
BB stated they had taken back two out of the 7 preorders and when I asked for what reason, he said he wasn't sure.
Tomorrow I will exchange it one more time at a BB 100 miles away from the first one since we are away this weekend and they are already holding it for me. Maybe a change of venue will help
Sounds like some serious bad luck. I haven't heard of anyone's dying until you. I hope the different BBY return will do better for you man...

So in the beginning of July I dropped my Rezound in some water, and it voided those water sensors on the back, and thought it has been functioning fine, you can notice that there is/was water under the very back of the screen when it is a white screen and it messes up from here to there but has worked alright. So I used my upgrade in March to get this phone and Verizon basically said I can buy a new phone at full price or else I'm screwed and stuck with it. Besides just finding someone on craigslist, ebay, etc.. anyone got any ideas on how I can get a new Rezound on the cheap or anything else 4g from Verizon on the cheap that isn't a turd, or somehow I can get a discount?
Just looking for any input, I'm fine with it now, but it's just annoying, and I'm not sure how long the phone will be operational.

Plug it into a charger, wrap it in a paper towel and put it in a bag of dry rice and let it sit for a few days. I've saved an iPhone and a camera that way.

Why do you plug in the charger?
Perhaps a little heat to help drive out the water? Just my guess.

You can buy replacement stickers on Amazon.... Replace the stickers and warranty that ****

Exactly. Putting it on the dashboard of your car works too, just make sure it's completely covered in rice so it doesn't get too hot. After all, you can bake cookies on your dashboard nowadays.
Oh! I forgot to mention taking the back off, for better airflow. Removing the battery, SIM and SD card don't hurt either, but I don't think the charger will work if you remove the battery. None of my other phones ever have but I've never tried it with my Rezound.

Putting it on the charger can make the water damage worse. Put it in the sun or something but don't put it on the charger. Water + electricity = kablam

He did say it's been working fine other then the water in the phone...
You can check the marketplace here on XDA too. I've seen some rezounds for around $200.
We're only talking about 5V, 1A, which isn't a lot of power. Yes, at high voltage or high current, water and electricity don't mix but I'm sure he's charged it since he dropped it. I've saved devices in exactly this way in the past. Screens are the the hardest part to save, though. The touchscreen on my old iPhone needed to be replaced because the bottom half stopped responding to touches and the camera has a very faint shadow in the screen if you hold it at a certain angle in bright light. Both devices otherwise work perfectly but I hardly use them any more because they've been replaced by my Rezound.
