[Q] Whites not white - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi i have just got this device and so far love it i just have a question if i look at a blank browser window i can see that white is not pure it has a sort of yellowish tint and if i compare to my ipad the difference is clear on the ipad the white is totaly white. Any one noticed this and how are your whites.

This is already widely known and discussed in various threads.

Have just looked at every thread in questions and cant find anything usefull about this issue i would like to know if i should exchange my device and insist on one with proper whites if they exist or if everyone has this problem and i will just get another one with the same issue

I notice this and me too was to compare this with my wife ipad2 notice specially the browser was yellowish but if the brightness is high it turn white. I had the same with my Galaxy S2 but in the settings you can change the screen scenario (CM10.1). For the browser I use UC Browser, you can set the brightness for the browser a bit higher to make the white more white.

Just downloaded and used screen adjuster from play store and set blue to 11 and yellow tint is gone with that setting whites are nearly pure white so i will keep device as im sure it will be sorted in a rom at some point

A few days I also tried Screen Adjuster, but meh! it's not good.
Slows everything down.
Try scrolling in a good (!) browser (i.e. not Chrome) without Screen Adjuster - buttery smooth and fast. Then activate Screen adjuster and see lags all over the place.
I f I wanted that I could remain with my old Acer A700...
Another issue is that Screen Adjuster is not running all the time; when you start an app, you will sometimes see that S.A. kicks in only a bit later.
There are screen calibration apps by Sony built-in in certain smartphones, also the Xperia Z. So there is hope (and we users must insist) that Sony releases such an app for the Tablet Z in the near future...

for that to happen we need a forum that people from Sony will see and read .........

There exists such a forum HERE.

So is it hardware or software? Any ideas?

You can flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2190293 and use the white balance from the Z / ZL phones, shows up then under Display

Yep, works fine ! I have a 16GB Wifi, on 370 rooted, UB. Same setting as I have on my Xperia Z for white balance.

that sounds great did install that on my experia z will give it a go and would appreciate if you could you tell me what settings you use.

Each display is different - so you have to try for yourself.
My display has a yellowish-greenish tint; saturation=7.5 and color=209 works quite well for me.
(Thanks for the tip, by the way!)

Color Banding

My Brother just got his Galaxy S2 and when he started Angry Birds I saw the color banding there.
Its not an effect of the AMOLED, its in the software (else you wouldn't see it on the screenshots).
Here are comparison screenshots:
HTC Desire (2.3.3) (click for big version)
SGS2 KE2 (click for big version)
Can this be fixed somehow? Maybe with KE7 firmware?
Or is this a problem solely from Angry Birds?
hmmm
Ok so I ripped a background overlay from angry birds (the sun ray casting)
Can you run the attached and press switch button see if that is the effect of which you speak?
Edit: I also now think that it could be something to do with how the GPU uses ETC compressed bitmaps

16 bit option shows more severe banding. However the 24 bit colour also shows some light banding effect.
Strange thing is, when I open this page on my phone, the |HTC screenshot shows no banding at all... which seems to indicate an issue with how the GPU/ Driver handles the image in-app which causes the banding.
maybe this could work?

I don't have any colour banding issues really. Maybe only very few in blue mid-tones and very dark green. But not noticeable.
Usually is set to low colour mode by the developer/app. So 99% likely that it's not a fault.

me? my eyes? my devices, the fact that I set my apps to 888 or on some devices they default to 565? Not sure what you mean...
this colour bandings not on all sgs2's, im on my 3rd.... 1st 2 were fine n had no colour banding at all, but im on my 3rd now and this 1s awful, massively noticable on the nexus live wallpaper, the grass 1.... doesnt really matter what the colours are, this 1 has a really dull screen too...... gutted
Colour Banding
Well, my SGS2 was sweet until i flasha custom rom , now even with the same stock Orange UK rom the colour is fakked up!1111 it now feels like a cheap chinese copy of the SGS2.
Even at boot the Orange animation has 50% colour that it used to have.....
I have to say I never really noticed this (or at least let it bother me). I just fired up angry birds and can see what you mean. Annoyingly, I only just flashed KI3 to a mates SG2, else I could have looked at his to see if it is any different.

I am having this issue with my SGS2, but I don't believe it's a hardware problem. I took screenshot on a Moto device, and transferred the PNG image to SGS2. The gradient color is shown without any color-banding effect.

[Q] color saturation setting and 4.2.2 update

I have 2 questions
1. Is there any way to increase color staturation via tools or upcoming updates from sony. (ie display colab was ported to xperia z)
2. Will this tablet recieve the 4.2.2 update or is cm10 needed.
Thanks and i apologize if the questions are too noobish.

1. Not yet. My guess is that we will probably see it in a 4.2.2 update. No one actually knows yet.
2. Sony have said it will be coming soon. No date has been given though. I'm really hoping it improves performance or I'll have no choice but to go for another ROM.

Really nothing major, but it does stutter with the recent apps draw and similar little things. It also doesn't play animations very well in some spots. It is pretty snappy for the most part though, just not quite Nexus 4 snappy.

Nope, I'm on nova launcher. It's very fast and fluid on the home screen. The choppy animations are pretty random in odd areas, but still frequent enough to make me notice them. Small apps is very choppy for example.
For 1) - I am using the App "Screen Adjuster" for that.
Screen adjuster doesnt have an option for saturation or gamma. Hope sony releases their app.

[Q] REALLY interesed on Xperia Z Ultra

I consider this phablet as a very good option. This afternoon I was in the store and I was amazed about the size and design.
But I have two questions:
Can you tell me your user experience with the Xperia Z Ultra? You can tell me any bug present on the phablet too.
How I can replace the battery in damage situations? I am worried, the XZU has integrated battery, I have a device like this an device like this and it's life was of 6 months. And when I tried to find another battery, I only take this device to the trash, :crying: I don't find anything.
Are this type of phablets a good option? What life time it have?
Thanks in advance and good night.

There are batteries on the internet so it shouldn't be too much of a problem to change.
The biggest bug is that on stock ROM most (if not all apps) run in phone mode. The other is the, at best, average camera.

easily fixable with Xposed Framework - App Settings.
I absolutely love my XZU, by far the best phone I ever had. The one thing that is below average is the camera, but that might get better with future updates.

You bought a phone not a tablet, no?
Root is easy, and should almost be something of a necessity on this device.

That's because Sony is defining the Ultra as a phone and not a tablet. The app "Pocket" though, defines it as a tablet and that's why we have the tablet UI. It's the same thing with "TV Show Favs" and "IMDb" too.

But it's not about Sony and how they think it should be marketed, it should be all about the user and how they use the product. Sony would have known that the device will be used more as a tablet than a phone for a lot of users, would it have been so difficult to ad a toggle in display settings to switch between phone/phablet/tablet modes?
Next I'll want a toggle to swap between pocket size and tablet size - changing the physical form factor...

I think sony took reasonable decision here. Because a tablet layout would be too horrendous for a portrait layout. Everything will be too narrow. It is clearly only for a landscape layout (which suits tablet z more appropriately) but yeah a tablet layout on landscape is still a possibility. But i think Android doesn't support such layout witch just by the rotation?

Root first, then use something like Titanium to freeze the What's New app.
Some system apps are allowed to be disabled in System > Apps > All. What's New is not disable-able.
Is it possible to unroot it right after amd keep the what's new disabled? I've rooted my gs4 before and since I'm not an expert, I had issues. So now I'm just afraid of rooting again.

ahura999: I would NOT do that at present.
Reason: For getting root, you need to unlock the bootloader; no big deal, Sony even supports you doing so.
But while unlocking the bootloader, you'll permanently lose all DRM keys and "X-Reality".
Too much trouble regarding the purpose if you'd ask me...
Don't get me wrong: Root is always a good idea, for me it's a MUST.
But maybe you better wait till a rooting method comes up which won't kill your keys.

So much hassle. I partially understood what you said. But when it comes to movies and things, how well is this screen. (I'm still trying to figure which to buy, z2 or galaxy tab pro 8.4.) my ideal tab would be the 8.4 but it doesn't come with 32gb. But it has a beautiful screen which I prefer. Even the size is perfect for me.

Display quality is excellent, high contrasts, deep blacks, no stuck pixels, almost no light bleeding, FAR better than the Samsung screens I saw the last months (e. g. Note 10.1 2014).
BUT (nothing without a big but): Tearing problems while scrolling (gets corrected with firmware 2.55), slightly worse display quality of text elements if holding the Z2 in portrait orientation.
The lower resolution compared with other tablets of today is no dealbreaker; you WILL notice that gear like the Note 10.1 2014 displays text a tiny bit better - you'll notice that if you've got the chance to do a side-by-side comparison. Seems to be a bad antialiasing algorithm utilized with the Z2.
Regarding videos: Movies look slightly better on the Z2, thanks to the better contrast ratio, the deeper black and the "X-Reality" feature. Yes, it really works. Not with every video, but in most cases this feature performs just fine.

No, it isn't.
It's just that the Note 10.1 has a higher resolution, period.
Aside from that: Do you also have a job or other hobbies? Seems you use all your time to write long reviews and forum postings about the Tablet Z2... comes across as a bit manic...
Hasenbein: Any reason for you obviously trying to insult me ?
If you're really interested in my profession (you've seen my works on TV), I'll happily answer your questions if you send me a private mail.
Regarding the antialiasing issue: Youl'll notice the feature working better in landscape mode. This suggests the algorithms needing further optimization. I am pretty aware of the resolution differences of Z2 and Note 10.1 2014 as I own both devices.
No. The portrait vs. landscape "issue" is a property of the screen.
The portrait mode has optimum sharpness only in one direction!
That is: If you are in landscape, you can turn the tablet LEFT or RIGHT to go into portrait mode.
With my tablet, the optimum sharpness is when I turn it so that the power button is pointing up. On my tablet Z it was when I was turning the power button down (which wasn't optimal). Could be that the "right" direction is even different on every individual device...
This is with any LCD screen (try to turn your desktop monitor into portrait mode, then you'll see ); on the tablets with even higher resolution, it's only less visible (or even not visible at all for normal people).
I know.
But I didn't refer to sharpness overall, I noticed slightly worse antialising if viewing text contents in portrait mode: No visible "edges" in landscape orientation, but slightly visible edges in portrait mode. Strangely enough, this effect does not always occur; sometimes it's there, sometimes not.
That makes me believe there's some optimization potential.

Yes, it's possible, but I don't see how root would cause you issues unless you either had security issues with misbehaving apps or went wrong somewhere in the process of rooting, in which case it isn't the fault of being rooted.
Currently though, the only root method for the Z2 Tablet requires unlocking your bootloader and flashing a custom kernel. This may or may not incur irreversible undesired changes to your system depending on your approach.

Screen Crispness....?

Anyone notice that the resolution shows 2k on this device but the icons and pictures and other things dont look as crisp as they should? They look sort of blown out.

icons are probably incorrect resolution, 2k screen isn't that popular. Also you might have smart resolution on, (i never notice it and therefore doubt it does anything at all)

technically, the IPS screen would be better, as it has RGB layout instead of pentile.
But the resolution on both is high enough you probably can't tell the difference anyway.

I boost mine to 915 (I think!), though I have to bump up the font size if I do that. Having come from a Tab S, that seems closer to a similar use of screen real estate (e.g. in YouTube, it shows 5 videos per row on the home page). Unfortunately, it means the other settings can no longer be accessed, so I need to reboot if I want to change anything
I'm surprised that more people aren't complaining about this. I think Huawei have simply taken the interface from the 8.4 version without any changes, so things are just bigger all round but you get no advantage to choosing the 10.8 version

Someone had posted just last week that the M5 feels like a large phone and not a tablet, likely due to it not identifying itself as a tablet. This causes annoyance with some apps as they draw as if they are on a phone, which when stretched to a tablet screen not not good. Instead of making use of the extra screen space and resolution, things just becomes hard to use.

I have mine set to 1250 dpi and I love it. So much real-estate, looks clean, higher quality and since its on the Resurrection Remix Rom, the dpi stays at that custom number even after reboot. Some things are hard to tap at times but I use GMD gestures and control the tablet with gestures and tasker

The Resurrection Remix Rom makes things easy to set a better resolution that works well for the bigger screen real-estate ☺
