E:can't mount/external_sd/ - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been having no trouble with flashing roms from my external sd card. I'm looking to completely wipe my phone (internal and external sd cards) to get a fresh install. I formatted my external sd card (via the phone). I then connected it to my PC, copied over my rom and a wipe tool no problem. My phone reads the SD card fine when it's booted up, can see the rom i've copied over.
When I re-boot into recovery mode with CWM-based Recovery (v6.0.1.4 - siyah), it says "E:can't mount/external_sd/" when I try to find my rom to flash.
I'm wondering if the problem is the siyah thing, it's not the kernal i'm using, if was installed on my phone with a rom I no longer use. That said, it wasn't an issue before I formatted my external SD card.

I've just updated CWM to ClockworkMod Touch 6.0.3.2 which has got rid of the Siyah version. I've also formatted the SD card again as i've read that formatting via the phone changes the file format to something cwm doesn't like. I did it via PC, it's formatted at exfat. Still made no difference, CWM won't read it.

Might be a silly question but did you go into "mounts and storage" I. Cwm and check the external sd card is mounted?

I have tried that. It didn't work, it would give the same error. I have managed to get it to be read in CWM, I downloaded the ROM manager tool, used that to put a partition on the SD card. Then I was able to format the card via CWM. I've not had a chance to put my ROM back on the SD card and retry. One thing is, when I booted up the phone after formatting the card in CWM, the phone shows it as blank or has an unsupported file system, saying it needs to be formatted. I wonder why there is a conflict?

I needed to format the sd card on my pc, it needed to be fat32. All sorted now

If you really want exFAT, try Philz recovery linked in my signature. It is CWM but with loads of great extra features (including exFAT support).
I actually thought that exFAT support meant it can format in exFAT. I find it odd that exFAT is the native format that Samsung uses but CWM doesn't support it.
Personally I use FAT32 myself as my main computer is Linux and exFAT is too microsofty for it to recognise.

I've installed that and re-formatted my SD card into whatever Samsung uses (think it's exfat) as fat32 was making windows explorer slow and crash prone

sup guys am having a problem with my samsung galaxy s3,via E:can't something related to mount format.............i mount for mated ,anyone who know how i can fix it?

[Q] Custom ROMs and SD card

I have used some custom ROMs (2.2, 2.3) on my X10, but none of them recognizes my SD card. The stock ROM (2.1) reads it properly, it is visible when I connect the phone to the computer via USB using the stock ROM.But when i use a custom one it says "Please mount SD card..." on Storage Settings and the computer recognizes it as removable disk, but it shows that the card is empty.I've tried cleaning all types of caches, full wipe, mounting/unmounting the SD card and formatting it with xRecovery and changing different basebands.
Is it a ROM bug, or I am doing something wrong?
Please check that your SD card is formatted to FAT 32. If not, the ROM won't recognised it.
Your SD card is probably partitioned.
Custom ROMs for X10 only recognise the second partition on an SD card,
meaning if you have one FAT32 and one ext2 (ext3, ext4, etc), it will mount the second and thus won't be able to read it, so you'll get an "SD card corrupted" message.
You need to wipe and erase the second partition with the same program you used to create it and it should work fine on any custom ROM.
I wiped the old partitions and then formatted the SD card to FAT32.Now it's recognized properly by the ROM.Thanks to both of you!!!

try to format it thru phone
Tried that a couple of time and it didn't work. After a couple of reboots it worked now. Thanks.
Still got a question though.
What are the correct settings for formatting the sd card from windows?
Is it necessary to partition it from CWM? What are the correct setting for this?
LE: Ok. I got myself deeper in trouble. I managed to format the sd card from CWM. I mounted the sd card and copied update-cm-7.2.0-RC1-p500-signed.zip over. I wiped the phone's memory and tried to install CM7 and got the following error: "E: Can't open /sdcard/update-cm-7.2.0-RC1-p500-signed.zip (bad)". I also tried with update-oxygen-2.3.2-LGP500-KANG-signed_v2.6.zip but doesn't work either.
I was thinking of trying to partition the sd card from CWM but i'm afraid i will make it unable to mount back again and this time i got no android to format it from.
Also it seems that formatting the sd card from cwm doesn't really work. The files are still there though it says that it completed.
LE2: I managed to mount sd card from cwm and copied over a cwm backup folder i had in my computer. Takes a while to copy it like it really does something. But after i try to restore or remount usb storage the files aren't there anymore.
can you tell me why do you want to patition your sd card? do you want to create second partition (sd-ext) or what?

Just format your SDCARD from SETTINGS - STORAGE, after that proceed with the instalation of CM7 or whatever you want. Don't partition your SDCARD if you don't know how to do that and if you don't need partitioned SDCARD. It is not necessary to do that if you don't use an APPS2SD app, so don't waste your time with that.

Can't see external SD from CWM

When I boot it to CWM from my AT&T galexy S3, I see the following
reboot system now
install zip from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wide cache partition
backup and restore
mounts and storage
advanced
But for some reason I can't find my external SD card, I can see it only from root explorer, the path is
/mnt/extSdCard
So if I save a zip file in that folder, and boot it up through CWM, there is no way can locate that /mnt path. Is there something wrong with my phone ? Is there something I need to install in order to see that path ?
I got no problem with my Galaxy note, I can see that but not with this S3.
Also if I connect the phone using a USB cable, it shows "mtp application" on the menu instead of connect to USB. My other phone will show me its own external SD directory. But with mtp application, I only see "Card and phone" folder.
please help.
Did you try going into Mounts and Storage, then Mount Ext SD Card?
I would recommend getting a Micro Sd adaptor to plug into your laptop/computer. Makes it a lot easier

When I go into "Install from SD Card" the bottom option above "go back" is to install a zip from the external SD card. This is on a T-Mobile one, but if I'm not mistaken aren't we all running the same recovery?
I did try that but it makes no difference.

Is your sdcard formatted exFat or Fat32? Epic CM's v4 recovery couldn't see my 64 gb class 10 SanDisk until I formatted it Fat32.
Hummmm, I can't recall but it was working fine with my Galaxy Note, I pulled it out from that phone and put in the S3. Just wondering why it is not working. Do I have to format it to Fat32 again?

The Note recovery you were using may have supported exfat, whereas the recovery we use now for our GS3's does not (EPIC CM posted in their blog that they would not support exfat). I copied the contents of my sdcard card to my Mac, ran disk utility and formatted it Fat32, and recovery recognizes it just fine.

[Q] Internal SD damaged - How to rescue? How to fix?

Suddenly I get this error in the notification bar:
Damaged SD Card - SD card is damaged. Try reformatting it.
And the SD card is not mounted. It's the internal one, the USB storage one I guess.
My external SD card works fine and is being mounted.
This is a huge problems since a lot of apps doesn't work when there is no internal SD. Swiftkey can't find it's languange packs, Gallery and many other video/image apps also fail etc.
If I reboot to recovery and to install zip from sdcard, I can see both my internal and external sd card. So recovery seem to be able to mount the internal sd, but android itself does not.
Now, I could format it, but I would like to at least be able to back up before I do, which is a bit of a problem since can't take the card out and use in a card reader and I can't get android to mount and share it either, even though recovery is able to mount the card just fine.
1) Does anybody know why this has happened?
2) Does anybody know how I can backup the contents of the internal sd, even if I can't get android to mount it?
3) Does anybody know how I any other way of fixing this problem?
Thanks in advance!
Rom & Kernel plz? :silly:
Also, Not really sure about this but I have a far reminiscence of having read somewhere that you can actually access your folders through USB from CWM once they are mounted. Please someone confirm this because I may be speaking bull****; otherwise you could try to backup your data from your very same computer.

Memory card not detected in any recovery

Hi,
I have a strange issue with my external sd card. I am using Redmi Note LTE[DIOR]. I do not know how to reproduce this issue.
One particular SD card(64 GB) goes undetected in the phone's recovery(tried on TWRP as well as CWM recovery).
From TWRP:
/external_sd/ folder is blank, and also TWRP won't check the mount Micro SDCard.
From CWM:
E: can't mount /sdcard/. That's all I get.
The stranger fact is that the same sd card works in the recovery of other phones and other sd cards work in my phone's recovery. As far as i remember this issue started after flashing the CM 14.1 ROM.
Have tried the below:
1. Formatting my sd card in all file systems possible(using Windows, Android, Minitool Partition, SDFormatter).
2. Partitioning SD card successfully using CWM and TWRP recoveries on other phones(still undetected on my phone)
3. Flashing stock ROM.
4. Trying to wipe and partition sd card through TWRP recovery on my phone, all I get is device could not be found in both cases!
5. Partitioning SD card using Minitool Partition Wizard.
Someone, please help. It's driving me crazy!
OTG is working fine on TWRP though.
Also, the sd card is detected and working when the phone boots up in android, issue is only with RECOVERY.
