[Q] Worth a buy? - LG Optimus L9 P760, P765, P768, P769

Hi,
I bought my first Android phone over year and a half ago for dirt cheap and it was the ZTE Blade. It had a great community and I liked trying different custom roms.
Now I feel it's time to upgrade my phone but I'm not willing to spend money on a high-end phone, so I was wondering if you would recommend the L9. I read the Info about the L9 variants and their differences and compared it to the specs on a local store's website and as far as I can tell it's either P760 or P765.
After looking at the forums it looks like there are more roms for P760, is that right? Should I look for that rather than P765?
Thanks.

If you are not in the U.S.A. or Canada it will "not" be the P769. This will be good as us P769 users do not have as much development as the P760/P765 users.
The P760 ROMs will work on the P765 just fine. I believe the only difference between them is one has NFC and the other does not.
I recommend the L9 if you want an affordable good quality device. The performance is not bad either. If you want more custom ROMs get another device as development has been slow.
Welcome to the L9 forum.

Thank you for your reply!
I think I will be getting the L9. Is it easy to brick this phone? Also, what is the difference between "android development" and "original android development" forums?

Easy to soft-brick. Almost Impossible to hard-brick.
Soft-brick is easily recoverable by flashing the KDZ file which is the complete ROM from LG.
Hard-brick requires sending to manufacturer. So far nobody has done this.
The new naming scheme for the forums are confusing to me also. "Android Development" is where we hack the original ROMs. "Original Android Development" Is where we make custom ROMs. At least that is how I understand it.

Lolz. You cant complain on XDA, after buying a phone without browsing the same phone in XDA. Similary these days new companies are formed only after suitable website name (www.xyz.com) is found.
Anyways this phone is new, only few months, and you need to keep some patience. There are really NO ROM/KERNEL DEVELOPERS HERE at the moment and the main reason is that, the phone have Locked Bootloader and some inbuilt restrictions and no good support from LG. No sources of Kernel is yet shared.
The good news is they (LG) have informed that they will provide unlocked version of Jelly Bean in next few months.:fingers-crossed:so everyone here have fingers crossed and literally doing nothing. May be after JB release more REAL developers will buy this phone and there will be too much of crowd in this forum too.
IMHO: If some strong developers from Optimus 2X forums, would buy this phone and come here, this phone will fly. They made roms and kernels inspite of Locked Bootloader by using some unique bypassing methods.

Dont lose hope. Patience is the key. This phone is enough strong to do magic. But Magicians are yet to come and perform.

Patience
For guideline, if you want a phone with a lot of android development (custom ROM), look here on XDA which phone have most vibrant community. Generally, Nexus phone and very popular phone (like SG SIII) have a lot of custom ROM.
L9 can be a popular phone though (maybe already). Big IPS screen, 1 GHz dual core with 1 GB RAM with affordable price. Now it depends on LG whether to embrace this community or not (my newbie understanding, it can be very difficult to have firmware/driver for camera, for example).

When we suggest someone any other phone, for ROM issue, it should be in similar category and price range. Well, you know, if one can "easily afford" SGS3 would not even look at L9.
But yes, if LG want people to buy this phone then, they must know what people want.

Stock ROM is enough for me, just give me the ability to root and JB update (dare I hope 4.2? )
For comparison, Samsung went straight to JB 4.1 from GB 2.3 with its S Advance.
Please keep pictures like that away from XDA.

$$$$ How about BOUNTY call for L9 Development and Custom Roms with features? $$$$

Since there are no real experienced devs in L9 forum. In very near future also it is not possible to get too many developers coming here from other devices. Therefore...posting this out of huge frustration.
I was thinking about a BOUNTY call for EXTREMELY EXPERIENCED DEVELOPERS who can build Custom Roms with many features as we already have unlocked bootloader. This was suggested to me by a user at least 2 months before for L9.
:laugh:How about calling a BOUNTY to be started for custom roms ...
with completely rebuilt custom Kernels with various profiles, like business, gaming, longest battery, etc.
with completely rebuilt bugless custom Kernels with safe and faster OC profiles from 1.2 to 1.5Ghz.
with completely rebuilt bugless stock rom with memory tweaks and missing bloatwares.
with completely rebuilt bugless CM, PA, AOSP, PAC port.
with completely rebuilt bugless Ubuntu port.
with Roms which can support all L9 Variants.
with working OTG
with working MHL
with working memory hack
with modded camera with hi-quality profiles
with really working Bravia Engine and not placebo
with really working Sound Enhancements and not placebo
with full support for theming
with full regular support for updates and willingness to for more wishlists.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU CAN THINK OF....:laugh::laugh:
With current userbase here, it should not be difficult for us to achieve a goal of calling a bounty from $1500 to $3000. Bounty will be only for totally bugless Roms. If everyone of us can share a bounty from $10 to $100 depending on the wishlist items and its possibilities, I think we can achieve goals. Bounty can be declared for individual requirement or for all of above in one.
Come on pals, give me your opinion and wishlists. I have never started a bounty before or dont have an experience, I also don't know the rules. But if some of us could come together we can find the ways to move ahead. I dont know how this is going to workout if everyone agrees it may work. I know some will take me seriously :good: and others can simply laugh it out. I really don't care. lolz
** It is known fact that, developers dont own all devices, but when bounty is declared they buy/borrow devices and start working on it.
**We may also need a group of beta-testers who should not leak the beta builds supplied by developers for testing.

Sounds like a plan.
I'd maybe be in with 10$, under the condition that it works for me (since I can't unlock my Bootloader/install CWM/etc for some reason) and that I still have my device when it's finished (including bricking etc.)

Great to know. Hope things roll in right direction. We really need too many people to support this. And yes, there are always chances of some users backing off or refuse to pay later, sort of cheating. Not a surprise, happened before.
I think this is a great idea!
Ill throw in 5 bucks on this device for a good rom no bloatware

I willing to pay the bounty for some extra features like OTG and MHL,
but first lemme find a job.I am currently unemployed.
Edit:
check this thread : Bounty Won by Team Codefire
These guys not only unlocked but coverted Optimus G to Nexus 4. 100% compatable with nexus 4 roms. Damnnnn!
I wonder if something like this could be done on Optimus L9 and making it Galaxy Nexus. I know this can't happen probably cause galaxy nexus is samsung device Optimus L9 Lg's baby.
Porting roms from galaxy nexus might be possible for experienced developers cause Optimus L9 has very similar hardware like Galaxy nexus. they both run on Ti Omap processor. Lg has Ti omap 4430, Galaxy nexus has Ti omap 4460.

The same reason I wanna support this. MHL & USB OTG
$10 for a bugless Jellybean ROM for the T-Mobile USA 769. Built-in apps to SD would be nice.

You mean to say galaxy nexus roms compatable with optimus L9?????
OTG is important
Will gladly pay $10 for OTG.
My personal opinion is that, L9 is not unfortunate for not having good developers, but its unfortunate because this phone is in middle range and no generous users I can see here. Some talk about 5 bucks and some give lame excuses. We expect too much and shell out too less.
I also dont see good number of response after 400+ views. This means people are reading it and simply ignoring. I think now this thread is useless and not going to serve any purpose.

Just bought the Optimus G

So, I just bought the Optimus G online from AT&T, and should have it by Wednesday. I was wondering what firmware is going to come on it (stock). The site says 4.1JB but many videos are saying 4.0ICS. Whether ICS or JB come stock on the phone I was wondering if it will definitely be rootable? And if so, then maybe link me to a few nice JB roms? I'm new on this site and I've been doing some digging, and I have a few that I'm deciding on, but would also like to see what you guys have! Thank you in advance.
Wayne.
In the General section you'll find a root & unlock thread...that should get you started.
I'd read up on the CM thread by shelnutt and the rootbox/PA thread by houstonn. (I like houstonn's build). Most issues have been sorted out on the aosp roms.
Don't be intimidated by LGPST. It sounds more imposing than it is.
Be aware of TeenyBin (not sure where that thread is) ... depending in which version you LG comes with, you may want to use that tool to upgrade/modify your partitions.
Read read read...ask thoughtful questions after you've read and done a Google search or three.
Good luck/have fun/backup often

To the Dev's of the LG G2

Hey guys/devs,
I'm coming from the HTC One and the community was top. I'm not a dev and always appreciated their/your work. I'm not serious if the LG G2 could be my daily partner or if I should keep my love with the One alive. A big tip in balance is how the LG G2 is supported by it's community/devs. I know this phone is new and that I have to be patient with.
But the only thing making me sad is seeing other mods and roms rising (!) in the Verizon and AT&T section of XDA. What about the International G2 (D802)? Don't get me wrong, I would like to thank all those guys who uploaded their stuff for the D802. But for me the community keeps a phone alive. The International G2 seems not to be that much supported or do you have plans for mods and (especially) custom roms?
Thank you!

we will get there eventually, keep in mind the devs are not evil and they are just normal people like us. So if they have the choice between a subsidized phone (or branded or any word wich applies) for around 100 to 200 $ or an international version for around 5-600 $ ... i'll let the answer to you..
The international g2 is just released .. and that you doesnt see here anything doesnt mean that there is no WIP .

I like options as much as anyone but I'll have to say that the stock rom is tight. And the built in features are definately something that ppl want in a complete custom rom. We are mostly waiting for the Nexus 5 because if it is based mostly on the G2, ports will happen on every rom worth using. This phone isn't exactly open source with binaries and even great devs are struggling to reverse engineer the sound. ..to be understood though as the are only 2 phones out right now with a 24 bit DAC so other code doesn't exist to sample from. Cyanogen is in the works but like I said without knock on at the very least, devs don't want to down grade there own phone to support something that's doughy in the center.

There is lots of development going on behind the scenes. D802 has been out 8 days. I own it, I'm testing on it and I hope to be able to release ROM's for it, but it takes time.

its just math/time. 802 will probablly outnumber all other.
You have to remember a few things about the D802:
1) It is just released, so those of us with the D802 are playing catch up.
2) We love our phones, but our lives take precedent when needed.
3) The LG is not HTC or Samsung. They have legions of people because they are the most popular (IMO). That doesn't make them the best, but what it gives them is a larger group of dedicated devs.
4) Lastly, there is a lot in the works for the D802. I myself want to work on a D802 project I have been thinking about since I bought the phone, but as stated above, my life takes precedent when needed.
Wow. I have the exact same dilemma eating my mind up from the inside. I also own an HTC One and yes, the developers do absolutely love that device (it's even been featured by the official XDA editors in several videos and articles on the main XDA page). I also want to get the LG G2 especially since it has the more powerful Snapdragon 800 SoC but i keep checking back in here everyday and there is still zero ROMs for the international version (model: D802). I know that it's been barely a week since the international version was released, but comparatively, if you have a look at the other forums, especially the Galaxy Note 3 dev forum is already bustling with activity; several ROMs, scripts and whatnots. I just hope the G2 developers catch up soon and even if they take their time, i like to believe that quality is what matters! :highfive:

LG V30 vs Samsung Galaxy S8 active

Hello,
I would like to hear your opinion on those two devices
LG V30 and Galaxy S8 Active.
Seems like it boils down to
V30 has good sound with appropriate speakers/headphones.
vs
S8active is rugged with bigger battery, couple hundreds less in price, and has a way to unlock their bootloader.
Did I miss anything else? What negatives would be in each model? How is development picking up for each of them?
I still use Nexus 5 with custom ROM (pureNexus) , mostly staying offline, so no real exposure to newer features.

V30 also has bootloader unlock, root and ROMs. You left that out. I have one in my hand right now. As we knew since last September, you just have to buy the right variants. Same as with the LG G6.

You are POSTING in the XDA V30 forum and asking about development of the V30? Scroll down to the Development section and take a look. Don't be lazy. We have TWRP, ROMs, root, kernels. What else is there? Yes, they are mostly all stock based ROMs, since LOS isn't fully developed yet but it's a work in progress.

Seems this link https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/development/root-partcyborgrom-galaxy-s8-active-t3747788 has bootloader unlock procedure.
Now, I am monitoring activity on V30 on daily basis, and paying attention to the dev thread since the beginning.
I am well aware of your sincere love and pride of the V30, and I don't want to step on your toes.
Sorry if I irritated you.
But initial happy predictions did not go through, on LGUS988 you have to obtain unlock permission through the url modification, not that is openly listed.
Then availability of V30 is so so,
V30+ seems to be locked forever,
Artificial bands locking, depending on a ROM ...
That's just not clear that LG wants community in their development.

I really don't care if Galaxy S8 active has some (unauthorized) boot unlock procedure. As I pointed out, so does some V30 (some "authorized" by LG, some semi-authorized -- the IMEI for the US998 is in the LG website database, LG put it there but never made an announcement) -- and those three variants (H930, H930DS, open market US998 V30) all have root, TWRP, ROMs.
In my view only the new 2018 Galaxy S9/S9+ really compete with the V30, and I would still like the V30, due to the "just right" size in between those two other phones.

Your can't have it both ways, saying you're clueless about V30 dev work and then saying you've been monitoring it daily since the beginning? You either already know or you don't. Which is it?
Maybe there's something I'm misunderstanding.
I only told you to look in the development section for dev work -- since you're already here posting in this V30 forum -- and that's still the best answer.
Let me rephrase myself, what are the future of V30 development in terms of getting something like Google edition ROM, or Lineage? or let's say a near stock ROM that enables all the GSM bands with VoIP hooks for each carrier (how it's done in Pixels), we are talking about carrier unlocked phone aren't we?
Would Oreo brings that functionality to V30? that's a big question
Would you expect developers already dive in on such features if sources are available? That would be a reasonable expectation...
Right now there is some activity in tweaking stock ROM, some activity around sound system and some visual themes, that's about it.
There is more activity on development, in telegram channels, on a personal levels, more then I possibly could trace, this why i asked a question about development and it's fate.
Aesthetically wise, I am with you and definitely prefer V30.
