[Q] Any ROMS and/olr kernels that provide FULL USB Audio Support - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Really frustratring to have a Verizon Note 2 and a Nexus 10 and can't enjoy FULL USB Audio Support. I have two DACs that work with USB Audio Recoder PRO, but I'd like to use that DACs with other apps, not just that app which isn't meant for music playback.
I asked this in the Nexus 10 forum and they said that the rom devs there just aren't interested in this feature (this is really frustrating considering there is a Nexus 7 rom/kernel [Timur?] that supports this, but not Nexus 10). I really don't want to root, unlock and go to the custom rom route with the Verizon Note 2, but the frustration is getting to me.
Any Verizon Note 2 ROMS and/or kernels provide full USB audio support such that I can take my dacs, plug them in via USB OTG, and enjoy audio not just from the USB Audio Recorder Pro App?
My dacs are Fiio E07k and Hifimediy Sabre, if it matters.
Thanks!!

Well USB OTG works fine for me on stock and all stock based roms and it also works perfectly for me on Vanilla Rootbox, CM, and all AOSP Roms with Plasma Kernel instead of the stock AOSP kernel.
As for if it supports USB audio, I would think it might but as I don't have a pair of USB headphones I honestly cannot tell you. I have seen threads where people connected their Note 2 to their vehicle through USB OTG and had full audio but I don't know what they were running.
Something else that may be useful to you just in case none of our kernels have USB audio support, there have been quite a few reports that the N7105, AT&T Note 2, and T-Mobile Note 2 kernels work perfectly on our phone. The N7100 kernels don't of course and the Sprint kernels don't because they write to a different block. Using a Sprint kernel can cause soft, and possibly hard, bricks but using kernels from the variants listed should work just fine.

There are quite a few posts on HeadFi about Android devices (Note2 included) and using direct output to the DAC. I don't have mine at the office to try, but here is the thread.

Thanks, but I am well aware and participate in that thread. The problem with that is I don't see anything in there about VERIZON Note 2 and most DACs like the ones I have, nor do I see anything about roms/kernels for Verizon Note 2 that make most, if not all, DACs work with Verizon Note 2.
For example, apparently Fiio E07k is recognized and works with International Note 2, but not Verizon Note 2. Like I said, it is really frustrating to have a Verizon Note 2 and Nexus 10 and not be able to simply connect any (like the ones i have) DACs to USB OTG to the phone and use them without that USB Audio Recorder Pro app.
After getting shot down in the Nexus 10 forum, I was (Still am) hoping that someone might be able to say, "Oh yeah, so and so rom that you can get here makes most, if not all, DACs compatible without having to use USB Audio Recorder Pro."
But if that isn't the case, that isn't the case.
Thanks anyways (or in advance if anyone can help out)

The reason you don't see the VZW version of the Note 2 mentioned is because not many of us bother with setting up and using DACs on out phones. All the Note 2s have the exact same internals, except for the N7100 which has different radios, the only real difference is the software and what VZW chose to block.
I would suggest you try these kernels, and Roms like CleanROm ACE since it is based on the internationals stock ROM, out for yourself and see if they have the features you are looking for instead of being rude to people who try to help you.
For instance, and I don't know if this will help or not, I have DAC oversampling and DAC Direct in Plasma kernel.

I wasn't trying to be rude (my apologies if it sounded like that), but like I said, the frustration level of having Nexus 10 and Verizon Note 2 and not being able to properly use my DACs outside of USB Audio Recorder Pro App is frustrating. Doubly frustrating that nobody can point me to a kernel and/rom for the Nexus 10. And head-fi has been no help, and I did place my query there in that thread. No response.
I was hoping that I might get a first hand account of someone with a Verizon Note 2 who has a custom rom and/or kernel and is able to make this work (so I know which one to use) rather than experimenting with various combos, especially since my Verizon Note 2 is paid for by my work.
Nonetheless, your suggestion of using a ROM based on the int'l version makes sense. Plasma Kernel + CleanROM Ace sounds like it might be worth trying.
Thank you. Again, if anyone has any first hand experiences of making this work, please let me (us) know.

I'm sorry I don't have any DAC's so I can't help you but just so you know the plasma kernel is only for aosp based roms, cleanrom ace is a touchwiz rom so you can't use them together. I find it odd though that he's basically saying you can do it on an aosp kernel for the n2 when you can't find one for a nexus device, which of course has a ton of more aosp development, but Shangrila knows what he's talking about more than I do.

I'm not saying you can do it for sure as I do not have a pair, all I am saying is that is what options are present in the kernel. Just because the kernel devs for the Nexus haven't built the features in don't mean they can't be built in, a lot of kernel devs only include stuff they want or use. I still haven't found an AOSP kernel with ext4 support built in, I know it can be done because KT747 has/had it but I have yet to see it on the Note 2 (and I mean all the variants).
As for Cleanrom ACE the only reason I mentioned that is because he said it works fine on the international N2, if that is true then the only difference would be the rom ( meaning VZW took that feature away like they did with so many others).
Here is a screenshot of the settings in STweaks, as I said I don't know if it will work or help but the settings are present.
And OP, joshm is right. You can't use Plasma and Cleanrom together. I had assumed you would know that seeing as how you were talking a lot about kernels I assumed you had flashed quite a few for the N2 and tested it already. If you haven't you need to, the only way to find out for sure is to test it yourself.

Completely forgot to check back. I am, as I type this, using a DAC with my Note 2 without using an special software. Setup: Note 2, Beans 19, Latest Perseus Kernel(didn't change any of the options; In fact, I flashed it just to test this). Phone -> OTG -> Hifimediy Sabre DAC (new tiny version) -> Sennheiser HD-650's. I have tested several albums with PowerAmp and everything works as expected. I also tested this with the lastest Sabre kernel and everything worked as well. Since, you have an N10, I'll try to test that later as well.

[Q] Thinking of flashing a ROM, not sure which to use

I've got a US Galaxy Player 5.0, and it's my daily driver. I mostly use it as a PDA (got it to replace a really aging Palm...), but love playing games on it, using it as a camera, and browsing the web as well. I saw a Nexus 7 today, and realized I want a performance upgrade for my Player, but I don't know what ROMs are in what state. I know some have certain bugs, others don't, and I want to make an informed decision based on what other people have tried.
I think I want to try something like a stock 4.0/4.1, but I could be open to customized versions as well.
I've looked a bit at EtheralRom 2.4, but being a noob I can't post there to ask questions. I know I've seen some other ROM's in previous visits to the site, and I've always started my search with the All-In-One thread.
Absolute must-haves:
-Working Cameras
-Working GPS
-Working Bluetooth/Wifi
Don't care so much about:
-Audio quality/supported formats
I am also using my Player to debug an Android App I have on Play, so if there's anything I should know about that connection I'd appreciate it.
If you absolutely need the camera then no ICS for you, it is currently work in progress.

If the cameras is a must-have, then the ICS roms isn't for you. Also etheral is a rom for the SGP 4.0 and not the 5.0. As for ADB, (debugging) it is working normally.
Ok, good to know. Are there any ideas on when cameras might get integrated into the ICS builds?
If I give up on ICS, what gingerbread ROM would give the most noticeable performance boost?
Chip 1.5 rom

I don't have any idea of when this could be integrated (it involves quite a long programming port). As for the roms, I don't know as I don't own a 5.0 but people says that chip is one of the best GB roms available for the moment.
Chip Rom ..ADW launcher Ex and its flying try screens and menus faster then GS3..on mine international is perfect but read that on US could have few bugs ..maybe one with US could tell you.

How do I l earn how to modify the kernel?

Since I really don't wanna pay $200 for a Nexus 7 just to have USB au dio in my car, how would I modify the kernel of my Note to enable USB audio? The galaxy S3 has it stock and the hardware is barely different. The Note II has it so why can't we?
If that's not possible, then how owuld I install l inux on my phone but keep phone functionality? I'd really like USB audio.

Should I buy a Galaxy Player?

I am looking for a device mainly as a VOIP device. I can get a Galaxy samsung S for around 70-100 around here average from craigslist but was also considering a player 4.0 or 5.0 - problem is the 4.0s go for a little bit more (right now I have a guy willing sell me his mint one for $85). However, I've seen the 5.0 for around 120-150 refurbished or like new used and really like 5" screen. What would you guys do?

No one?!
Do you also want to use it in long trips or for GPS? If then the extra battery capacity from the galaxy player 5 suits the needs. Because honestly all of the following works perfectly well for a VOIP. Also if you are looking for development support from XDA you might consider the galaxy s. I would personally get the galaxy s because of the better custom roms and the capability of using a backup battery, which a player 5 cannot do

The Galaxy Player 4.0 is based on the Galaxy S1 so I'd go with the S1 because there are way more devs for it. Spec vs Spec the only thing in favor of the GP 4.0 is that it has duel stereo speakers and that's about it lol. The S1 has a much better screen and better camera. Now the 5.0 is a little different. It has of course the Screen Size, LED Flash, and a much bigger battery. Also it has a bit more devs, however it's screen is actually worse than the 4.0's and it uses a Yamaha DAC so it's sound quality isn't as nice as the GP4.0/S1 (whom use the same DAC). So like I said go for the S1 and be careful shopping on craiglist.
5.0 is worth it with reservations - old rom and no updates

hi
I've already bought a 5.0 from new and overall I'm reasonably impressed. It's a good vivid player with all the flexibility of Android to boot and a microSD card slot!.
I decided to purchase a separate music device rather than run my phone that way to avoid running my battery down...
However I would warn you that for the UK version that I bought, it seems to be stuck running Android 2.2.2 with no sign of an update any time this century. It's starting to be restrictive with regards to apps. Furthermore although some will tell you "just root it and update the rom"...I've yet to see a simple (for a noob) rooting process and set of roots that would at least match the stability of the stock version for the 5.0/4.0.
I've searched the fora and there's a lot of info to digest....
Did you try superoneclick?

Just some food for thought. I noticed that the Galaxy Player line is no longer available to buy, brand new, from Amazon (only third party sellers) and that Best Buy shows any of the players as "not available for shipping". I was curious what was going on and begin to find that it is possible the Galaxy Player line is being entirely discontinued. I hated to hear this, but think it is important to keep in mind as Dev support could become continuously smaller - it isn't large by any means at the moment.
If you are okay with the possibility of no support outside of forums, I would say to go for it. They are great devices as media players and even a type of 'wifi only' phone. Good luck with your decision!

Good choice you should be careful buying a used galaxy though. They are notorious for the power button breaking. There's a workaround however by installing an app where you can turn it on with a volume button.

I looked up kies mini and it seems they are device specific, I've installed kies regular and it says I'm on the latest firmware already.
I know I could try updating to 2.3 with Odin, and from what I understand that would be to the stock 2.3.5 that the US 5.0 Wi-Fi comes with. This is how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EYjIyVXRGM
I just don't know if it might break something, is there a big improvement to updating to gingerbread? Like how is the performance?

uninstall Kies regular and try Kies mini. mini upgrades basically all the galaxy s products so it's safe to assume that it would work on the gp. plus it was mentioned by Samsung themselves in order to upgrade the galaxy players.
gingerbread is not exactly a huge improvement in terms of performance, but it gets way better app compatibility. for example you don't need to root your gp if you want to use the power button alternative if the button ever breaks. and it's a more appealing to the buyer's eyes.
um... that's all the differences I know of

I ended up getting a mint Droid X for $45 after flashing ICS I was really satisfied with it as it seemed just as fast as my old G2x (that I killed trying to fix - so many probs and bad battery life)... however while battery life was decent 6 hours screen time, I decided to try a GB rom and its at 49% after 10 hours of almost continuous usage.... the phone, while not as powerful as the latest dual cores or even the galaxy S is very smooth and fits my needs... highly recommend anyone who is in my shoes to check out used phones to use as a VOIP cuz there's really good devices/deals out there!

In the menu of kies mini was an option to reinstall drivers I tried that but after leaving it for 20min at least it was still at 0% so I canceled it. Are the drivers on the Samsung website different? When I look at the support section for the YP-G70 it doesn't give any drivers.

If you want stable look for custom roms that are based off of stock, like Chip v1.5. These ones provide mostly, if not, all the features that are available for the default rom and provide extra features. Check this out for more details. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720457

[Q] Better audio with Beans 20 ROM

Hi all,
I'm running a Verizon GN2 with Jellybeans 20 ROM. I use Google Play Music for all my music and would like to stick with that. All of my listening is through the earphone jack, I'm not concerned with loudspeaker volume or quality. I switched from an iPhone 5 and Spotify and am not finding the audio quality on the GN2 to be as clear. The volume is fine though.
What kernel/app combos do you recommend? I would prefer to stick with the Jellybeans preinstalled kernels if possible but am willing to try others if they would be better. Some folks have suggested Perseus/Stweaks and the default gain mod, and I'm looking into them, but my understanding is they primarily increase the
volume and not the clarity, and may not address my issue.
Should I try Viper4android and AC!D?
Please let me know if there are others I should research.
Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you know if Neak is compatible with any of the SDswap options when installing Beans 20 and if so, which one (PBJ, Perseus etc)
Faux has boeffla sound. Its pretty good. Sincee flashing kernels is easy peasy try out and see which sounds best to you. I might be wrong but since beans rom has the option to choose kernel before sd swap im assuming our tw kernels all are good for swap. Ive never used the sd swap so id be safe and make sure for more advise on that.
Thanks guys. I installed Perseus/Stweaks which didn't improve things much. Now I'm running stock beans with Viper4Android which is pretty good but was a little complicated to install. Faux/Boeffla sounds interesting and I will try that next time I flash.
PB&J also supports Boeffla sound. Boeffla is good if mostly what you want to do is enable the high fidelity features of the Wolfson DAC. But you need good phones to hear the difference. It also lets you set the gain. It has hardware based
EQ but that does not work for me Using Pandora. Though it may work with other sound apps. Put another way Boeffla is for a clean, minimum signal chain.
Viper used for basically complete control of your sound. There is no way to describe it in a sentence or two. It's kernel independent and you install it by downloading a zip, extracting the APK and installing it by clicking on the APK. You can do all of this in Root Explorer. I used to be from the less signal processing is good processing, but I have become a big fan of Viper.
A Google search on Viper4android well bring up the XDA thread as the first hit.
Boeffla and Viper can coexist, but of course the recommendation is to only run one sound mod at a time.
It can seem daunting all the settings but the first couple of posts do a pretty good job of explaining them.

AC!D
Viper4Android (depending on what IRS files available/headset)
Stweaks/Pegasus for changing the max dB/turn off all options in there
definitely the best.
Now I'm running PBJ/Boefella now on Beans 20 (had to reformat my microSD to FAT32), and it's pretty good. Kinda torn between this and Viper but they're both good.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

[Q] DNA and MHL/HDMI Rom Questions

Hi All!
couple questions regarding the HTC DNA and HDMI/MHL out. I use my DNA with my Pioneer Appradio in my car. If haven't seen this, check it out, it's pretty amazing. Anyways.. you need to use the MHL adapter to make it work. I've been playing around with different ROMs and I've seen that sense roms work flawlessly with the adapters and CM based roms dont. Anyone else experience this? Is that a CM problem? if so, is there anything I, or any dev could do to fix it? I really dont like sense so id prefer a CM rom to sense but I need this feature so I may be stuck. Wondered if anyone out there had any solutions or thoughts on the issue. Thanks!!!
I've yet to see ANY AOSP rom support MHL. I've experienced this on a GS3 and Note 2. I can't remember how my Galaxy Nexus handled it when it was running a custom rom, though it does support MHL while on the stock rom. I'm trading to a DNA from a Note 2 tomorrow, and I'm pretty jazzed.
The reason that mhl is not present in cm based roms is because it doesn't function good at all. Output is crap basically so chad decided not to add it at all.
