Make an app for the nexus q that adds chromecast support - Nexus Q General

I THINK THIS IS THE IDEA OF ADDING THE SDK SO DEVS CAN BUILD THE Q INTO A POWERHOUSE WITH 4.3 LOL
LETS HOPE SOME TALENTED DEV HERE WOULD LIKE TO EARN SOME OF OUR DONATIONS TO DO SO.
Whoops sorry about all the caps!

I would def donate for this cause

Without any doubt, I would donate to any developer being able to implement chromecast compability to our loved Nexus Q.

i agree, i'd be interested as well. i'm actually looking into how the chromecast works right now, doing a rom would be an interesting idea. for the next 2 months i'm away from my Q, but maybe until then the google tv developers have a better understanding of how the chromecast works. the easiest and most optimal version obviously would be to have an apk that could just be installed and run on the Q, since apparently the chromecast is android based (stripped down though).

I don't really have the time to, but someone should start one of those android bounty type drives and advertise it to the community/ news sites.
I would be willing to play $50 to kickstart the bounty pool for anyone who can bring chromecast support to the Q, and restore it to its former glory.
I think the biggest thing to make people hesitant is the possibility of google doing it and making all the work useless.

I don't see that happening at all. Google could care less about the Q and even if it's only matter of an hours work for them it's not worth it. The only people having the Q got it for free.
The way I see it, this has to be done by the community. Lots of developers has the Q, hell cyanogen even has a rom for it. I bet getting the Q to chromecast is much less work than making a rom for it.

My bounty comment stands either way, I say we should make a real thing of it.
I'm sure some developer would see it as a simple weekend project and pump it out if there was a cash incentive.

I'll donate to anyone who figures out and posts instructions and files for me to turn my Nexus Q into a much more stylish Chromecast.

i'll just quickly leave this here for reference: https://developers.google.com/cast/
it seems though that it's necessary to inspect a chromecast (or at least the binaries for it) to get a better understanding of how it works.
edit: http://www.reddit.com/r/chromecast might also be a good source for information.

can we get someone to create a thread and keep a tally of users and donation amounts?
then we can maybe pass that to the android news outlets / social media to garner some attention to it?
I stick by my previously stated $50.

[Q] Moving to AOKP

I'm currently rooted, but running stock ICS.
How do I get to AOKP without loosing my apps and their data safely?
I'm fairly comfortable with ROMs/rooting on my Droid phones. Just a little nervous with my spendy tablet.
Thanks guys.
Titanium backup. Oh and if you want AOKP, you might want to check another site for the latest version.
Thank you! XDA doesn't have the latest version? Wha?
Man I am soooo nervous to unlock.
Also I guess my next question is with AOKP updates. How do I apply those without wiping cache/data and all that every time like on my Droid?

Sorry, I would speak my mind about moderators around here, but I'd probably be banned for free speech.
It's easier to bash the President than it is to say anything negative about an XDA moderator.

Glad to see freedom of speech is still alive and kicking. Hehe. Not the only forum with that problem.
And I wasn't trying to be negative. I thought that XDA was THEE place to go for Android stuff. Am I wrong? Where would I locate the newer version? AOKP.co? Just don't wanna download from Uncle Jimmy's used Android ROMs or anything.
Thanks.

And you're ok with that? Wow....
Back on topic though... how do I easily update AOKP versions?
all I ever do when trying a new rom, is back up with Titanium Back up and also with Clockwork.
I install the new rom and see if its working fine. Then reinstall my apps and I am good. If all else fails, i restore to a back up on Clockwork
Of course I am ok with it. Those are the rules I agreed to. Do I think the mods are fair? It depends on the situation.
But simply put this is not a public board. It is a private board that the public at large may view and join as they wish. Grow up.

Yeah maybe its not a bad idea, it could be called 'Free Speech XDA Developers & Forums'
Sorry was hazying away from Topic while thinking about the freedom of speech thing.
But too many good devs and good people with great ideas get kicked out because many mods do not know how to not involve their personal feelings in their jobs as mods.

You are still having an issue understanding this.
You have no rights on this message board. This board is not in any way run by a government body and as such does not have to respect your rights.
If you want to test my assertion I suggest you try breaking a few of the rules and see what happens.
If you wish to go somewhere with no censoring may I suggest 4chan?
Congrats on finding what you were looking for.

It's this way on tons of forums out there. Someone becomes an admin, they think they rule the world and then it gets to their heads. Find a welcoming forum, and stick with it!
If you want to ban me for saying that. Go for it, I won't be stopping by here too often anymore anyways, just like many others. Just solidifies my views and quite honestly makes the XDA community look bad.
However I did find what I was looking for at a different site and the users there were very helpful and I was able to successfully get to AOKP, and they even helped me troubleshoot some other issues with CWM.
So I am sorry XDA, I've loved you for a long time, but there are much more welcoming places out there for Android Development.
And thank you for the users that did actually try to help me get to AOKP on XDA.

How's Development for this Device

Just like the title says......I'm looking for a quadcore phone and for the price, can't really beat this but sadly to say, it's been released since November and have not seen very much action going on here.
Is the LG phone pretty much just the way it is?
Thank you,

We will have some stuff very soon. I hope before February, if not then, hopefully in Feb. There are people working on both CM10 and AOKP. The devs haven't had source so are sort of flying blind. They have mentioned they think source will drop soon.

I don't see why everyone is getting mad at the guy for saying it sucks because, compared to the other devices, it isn't getting much support. That's a fact. It sucks in the sense we don't have much support. It's awesome though that from the support this device DOES have, they seem to be really committed and knowledgeable and I truly believe this device is gonna have some awesome stuff in the coming months.
To the OP, it is getting better. When I first came here, devs were just working on getting the bootloader unlocked. And now we have quite a few ROMs and quite a few mods thanks to the awesome and devoted people in this section. This is still a brand new device and it's only getting better. Can't wait to see what the future has in store for this device!
I'm actually listing this on eBay to sale because I've tried my hand at bringing cm and without sources to go off of its extremely difficult. The phone itself has potential, but don't think it will get the support it deserves due to LG. I'm going back to Samsung and will live my days out there unfortunately.

I think everyone is mad at LG for craptacular support of their device but taking it out on the poster because he is insinuating that the problem is with the developers. They are doing the best they can but only a very small handful of devs have the knowledge, time, and resources to overcome the obstacles in our way, again, because of LG. Once those roadblocks come down, then it will be much, much easier for the garden variety developer to customize and build ROM's for the LGOG, and things should take off.

Development for this phone is non existent. Selling mine to a coworker.
Not the developers faults though. It's LG...and don't plan on buying anything from them again whether it's their TVs or phones. Just took 2 LG TVs back to the store that I bought for my office. I refuse to support a subpar company.
I just think it is insulting to the devs that are working on the device. And everyone thinks nothing is happening since the devs don't post their work here but on the irc Chanel. Is as of everyone expects a CM ROM to be available with in a week of the device dropping, even though we don't have kernel source.

I don't believe they are trying to talk bad about the great work this entire Dev community has done, but rather about LG. You guys have done a great job with what you were given. The OG components wise is a great product, but the fact that LG released it obviously will hinder its progress and potential. Hey guys,
**Please for now just donate who have the D802 version,if we reach the amount needed, then he will see with the device in his hand if he can add support to other variants**
Our G2 dont have a lot of kernels options, and lately i see a lot of people asking for more developing,so i spoke with stratosk and his more than interested in developing to G2 but he can't afford the device.
He will develop a stock kernel + integration with sempahore app(free),about CM support he is not sure if will be.It depends on the changes they made in the kernel. If it's a totally new branch, he will not develop for CM.
The device (D802) in greece cost 555$ so maybe if we all donate smalls amount we can give him a device and bring one more kernel developer to G2.

@mickskillz
Thank you very much for your intention. But I really can't confirm that I can release a kernel without having the device to test.
I really don't know the differences between the devices, so I can't promise anything about this variation.
Can't you go and look at the different device trees prior to commiting kernels updates to see whats what? We already have a pretty good kernel thread that supports CM11 and Stock across all of the variants.
I would suspect that you should do your homework about which devices you plan to support (all, some, one, none) and get back to us. I'd love to throw down some cash for the VS980 Verizon variant but not if you don't plan on supporting it. I just think people would be more inclined to donate if we had more information.
I'll pledge $20 if you can promise VS980 support.

I agree... I understand where you are coming from, but I've donated enough in the past for no reason. I like to support our DEVS, specifically the ones that support my device. If you are able to sort thru some of the commits or check what wootever has done for our kernel, maybe you can get a better ideal if you are capable of supporting the verizon variant. Thanks and I hope we can raise enough to get this going.

There is no homework for me to do, my friend.
As it is mentioned in OP, this is for D802. I can't be sure for all variants. This is clear from my side. Please DO NOT participate for other variants.
zevim2005 had this idea and I appreciate this.
I feel very uncomfortable talking about donations and this bounty.
This is maybe my last post in the thread. If someone knows me (or my work) and wants to contribute I will be grateful.
I don't promise that I will make the device fly like a rocket or that the new kernel will solve all your problems.
I promise Semaphore kernel and Semaphore Manager app for G2 (D802 variant). Nothing more nothing less.
Thanks everybody for your time.

I would like to think that works, but I hardly see the value of conditional contributions for work on this scale. I'm not one to think that only one means can accomplish an end, but to me that's an awfully small amount of money when assayed against the work involved.
I've seen AOSP builds done where the dev accepts no donations whatsoever. They do it for the sake of doing. I've seen it done where the dev accepts donations, but I'm unclear as to whether a bounty was the impetus.
I believe that time is the primary driver here. In time, an AOSP dev will take on this phone as a personal hell. Then you shall have your AOSP rom, and I'd suggest tossing the fifty at the man doing the unbelievable amount of labor involved. Perhaps offer to test, as well.
As noted, I hope I'm wrong.

I'm coming to Note 3 from HTC EVO LTE and from what I see, development is way behind, not even worth rooting this phone at this point. There's a couple of roms out there, but there seems to be a lot of uncertainty on how to do things here. Maybe it's just me though...

It's an outstanding group. We have some of the best devs on xda. It's a new phone, and I am proud of what has been accomplished. If the development work is at an unsatisfying level for you, then move on, please, and I wish you well. I hope you find that for which you seek.
Or stay and support the excellent work that's being done. Either is an excellent option. Give this group time. You haven't seen anything yet.

@micmars I would have to absolutely agree. Every Dev we have here on the note 3 is outstanding and always very helpful. They go absolutely above and beyond for what they get in return. I couldn't be happier with them or there ROM'S. I'll take quality over quality any day.

I'm not knocking what you all are doing and I like this phone so far, I'm just saying that coming from a phone that had countless roms to one where It's not worth rooting yet is disappointing. And yes, I understand it's a new phone and it takes time. But I do appreciate what the devs do, it was not my intention to bust on anyone...

Didn't think you were. I was, however, putting my thoughts out there for you and for the devs that work their butts off. Whether you meant to give offense is of less concern to me than those whom might have received it as such.
I do think that the observation is harbored by many, but I think the situation is as good as one could hope. Consider that this is a CDMA device, on the 3rd largest network, and a niche phone. It explains a lot of what you've duly noted. I think, relatively speaking, the level of development is quite strong, and will get much better with the passing of the new year.
Ultimately, I'm glad you are enjoying the phone.

"Condition contributions" are exactly what brought Sbrissen to the note 2 and ktoonz to the s4. Which worked out fantastically. I know I would personally throw in at least 50 for a sbrissen over here ( he has Verizon but did it for sprint too). although thanks for josh beach and freeza for all the work they do. I prefer aosp , although jellybomb is a beautiful thing.
To be honest, I could take or leave AOSP. On my Note 2, I would flash an AOSP ROM but would soon start to miss some of the TW features that were native to Samsung phones. Sure there were some third party apps that did some of the Spen functionality, but none were as good as what Samsung did. I actually like the Samsung camera as well.
For some, saying "Pure Android is the only way to go man..." is a little silly to me. Those people are starting to become the Apple people of the Android world.
For me, installing one of the amazing Roms already here so I can customize what I want on the phone, plus a stock looking launcher like Nova equals the best of both worlds: The cool functionality of Touchwiz with the clean look of stock Android.
...We're growing. Slowly but surely. Patience is key in development. Extra donations of encouragement is good but..sometimes even the best motivating incentives can have hurdles because of the intricacies the devs encounter... It's a time game and most importantly it's about doing it right! Or as close to stable as possible =). Soon enough we'll all be breaking off a pice of our kit kat bars.

Sorry but for me pure android is the only way to go sorry I am proud to be one of those people.. Not a fan of bloat I will always be a Mac/Linux guy. I love simplicity and function...not a monster truck show...all flash and no substance. For the record I am not complaining.I love my note and the custom Roms I have the chance to use because of the developers hard work.

You'll note that what I wrote was speculative. That stated, I'd rather have the word of the devs you mention stating that a $50 bounty was that which triggered their initial foray into building an AOSP rom for a specific device. If you can point me towards that, I'll find it pretty cool.
I'll stand by my initial post, which averred that, though plausible, seems only part of the picture.

You're welcome
The problem is you guys are failing to understand a few things:
-This phone is HIGH end, costing 700+ dollars.
-A lot of folks got their upgrades on the S4, HTC One, or Nexus 4.
-There are a lot more players in the game this time around. LG,Nexus 5, Motorola, etc. Much more diverse and people have spread out over phones.
About AOSP; lazerus06 said it perfectly. To install AOSP on this phone without proper support for its features is pretty much gimping the phone. I suppose there will always be the set-in-their-ways diehard AOSP fans, but for this phone it is ridiculous and irrelevant.
As for dev-fanboyism--the issue is that you guys overlook devs if they aren't your "favorite dev" which is pretty bad for development in general. I get it. You found someone who's work you enjoy and you want them to follow you to your next phone, but seriously. There are good devs here and yeah, there may not be 20 different ROMs to flash, but that's better for the forum. You're used to your old phones having 63 different ROMs all taking the same mods from the same people with only slight variations (themes, and maybe a mod or two) in said ROM. That's retarded. Nobody wants a clone of someone elses work with a different theme. Understandably, this can look like a lack of development for this phone, but on the contrary, it helps weed out would-be clone devs and hopefully will retain a good choice between a few ROMs that are incredibly different from each other.
As for kernel devs, I got into building my first kernel not even a month ago and let me tell you, these people are nobody to praise. I would never accept some bounty or even take part in one to pull someone over to build a kernel for my phone. Ktoon may be a cool person IRL, but online the dude has a big head and is terrible at taking suggestions, and fixing problems. For example, when I had the Galaxy S III on Sprint and had no experience in kernel development, I relied on other people's kernels and let me tell you, his was the most unstable, problematic kernel I've ever come across. I have on a few occasions tried to reach out to him via PM to get some of the problems, namely Bluetooth audio fixed and his reply to me was

Now to me that sounds like someone that doesn't care. If it were my kernel, I would not rest until an issue was fixed regardless if I had the problem on my phone or not.
Also, building kernels is not rocket science and with websites like GitHub around, you can kang someone's source, patches, mods, and features straight out of their repository without doing any real work yourself. It is actually quite easy to do if you don't plan on doing any original work. So, please don't fool yourself into thinking some of these kernel devs are people you need to throw money at to get to get decent development work. Because, the best developers aren't the ones who can be bought over to another phone.

Your right I actually did allow myself to get distracted from the original post and try to make it into something else..I apologize
I'm still lost on what features I would lose with aosp? Touchwiz? I use nova anyway. S-pen? I rarely if ever use it..and all your losing is the hover function anyway. I hav owned the s3 ,n2 and s4 and always used aosp. With variants like rootbox and carbon I really don't see what I'm missing out on? Other than Samsung and sprint bloatware..I mean miniN3 is proof of how much junk is shoe horned onto our phones by the carriers and Samsung. I don't change prls? Although I don't think aosp is perfect it is nice having that option. I do prefer the stock camera and video player.I amsseriously not being a ahole here I am just asking.

What kind of proof do we have that we aren't waiting on a ghost?
There is no proof. The original Note is a very aged device now, but very reliable. As reliable as the talent of the developers that exist on XDA. You only have a few choices.
Trust and be patient
Develop yourself
Buy another device.
Don't be so quick to throw the first option away. Sorry, I haven't looked at your stats, but I have been here a while with several devices. One thing I have learned, this device won't die.
Good things come to those who wait. They said the Note wouldn't get JB. They said it wouldn't run KK.

Was using a Note 3 for a while. Awesome device, but because of the locked bootloder and the fact that safestrap is no longer supported, I just went back to the Note. I'll settle for a slower device as long as I have the flexibility to customize it. I have a hard time understanding why OEMs force consumers into using their ROMs.
P.S. - It's Motorola

That's all fine and dandy, I just wish these mystery developers, could at least Identify themselves and make a note (no pun intended) that they do in fact have intention on porting 5.0 to the note, and are in fact at some stage of development (no eta required). I prefer to have this than to having someone, who isn't claiming to be one of these "undercover developers", tell me "yeah someone is probably working on it, and it's probably going to be out in February." for all I know you may be getting your information from talking to a horses butt hole (no flame intended). Even a link to an non-credible noob from some backwater internet forum saying he's in the beginning development stages would be better than "yeah someone is probably working on it, and it's probably going to be out in February."

Really? I've been running Kit Kat on both of my notes since release! At release there was some bugs, but I'd say sounds like you haven't tried too many distros of it lol! Any newer CM11 runs pretty damn good. And Liquid runs well! I personally found BrokenOS to be practically flawless and I'm running the newest release of Spirit ROM right now and damn its killer! So I'd love to know how you can say Kit Kat is hardly running? LMAO!
