[Q] Galaxy SIII USB Connectivity Issues - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone, I have a Samsung Galaxy SIII (LTE Version) and no matter how hard I try I can't get it to solidly connect to my computer!
What happens whenever I plug the Galaxy SIII into my PC (Windows 8) is a follows:
I hear the device connected sound from my PC and the charging indication from my SIII. So far so good, but most of the time when I go to "My Computer" the phone isn't listed anywhere. After a couple of times plugging the USB cable in and out it shows up on the PC, but almost instantly after being listed I can hear the device disconnected sound and the window closes. If I move the cable for the SIII even a tiny bit I can hear the device connected sound almost instantly followed by the device disconnected sound and a message from Windows telling me that the USB device malfunctioned.
This makes the task of copying photos or movies to and from the device near enough impossible. The phone is only a few months old and is completely unmodified! The USB cable is also the stock out-of-the-box one. This doesn't seem to be a new issue either! It's been happening almost out of the box but I assumed it was down to drivers (which were updated but made no change) and now it's starting to annoy me very much!
Any help would be much appreciated

I'll be sure to give these a shot! Thanks!

No probs.
Beware if you dont know already, factory reset wipes your internal sd card. Maybe use dropbox to auto upload all your photos before you get to that stage.

Alright, so I went digging in the cupboard and found the cable from my old Xperia Play. Upon using that as opposed to the one Samsung shipped with the phone, the connection issues seem to have vanished. (I'll update here if they return)
I suppose this goes to show badly made the stock Samsung cables are which is quite a shock considering Samsung expect people to rely on them.

The cables are crap. The s3 has built in stability detection. If connection unstable with cable, lowers charge to 100mA.
Almost all the "slow charging" threads are down to crap sammy cable

Ha! I was also suffering from really slow charging with that cable! Again though, thank you for your help

I had the same issue, new cable did the trick!

[Q] Micro usb connector broken?

My problem is that I cannot connect my Galaxy S II to computer. When I try to connect it only says "unknown device". I have tried with newest Kies and without Kies. With multiple computers with Vista and Windows 7 32bit. Also downloaded Samsung Galaxy S drivers manually from web but with no avail. And I have tried with Usb-debugging on and without it. I also tested USB-mass storage setting but it does nothing. Computer also says "unknown device" when I try to connect phone while in download mode.
The charging works btw.
When I connect the cable my phone just makes the normal sound but the mass storage android man newer appears to top tray. I have also made factory reset and cache delete from recovery but with no luck.
I would like to flash different rom with Odin but I cannot do that when the connection is not working. My current rom is official XXLPQ ics. The usb cable isn't the problem because I have tried with different cables which work normally with other phones.
Is the warranty repair only solution? Really wouldn't want to be without my Galaxy during the repair time.
Sounds like it's going to need a check over, if it wasn't for the fact you have tried multiple computers AND leads, as I had a similar problem but found it was down to my PC needing a fresh install.
Unless others with similar experiences have advice it doesn't sound good, as though pins 2, 3, or 4 have problems maybe, or that the board within the phone has bent up or down through rough handling/tug on the cable.
When did it start happening? I had a fright by tripping over the phone while plugged in, and ripped the plug out while launching the phone across the room. It broke the charger and thought I'd killed the port on the phone, but found if I propped the plug up and put weight on the phone it would connect, like this...

Might work if the board has got a whack like mine did.

[Q] SGS2 can't get along with my computer, desperate!

My SGS2 keeps disconnecting and reconnecting the usb with my computer. This is hapenning for quite a long time now.
I keep hearing the windows connect/disconnect usb sound when my phone is plugged in, making it unable to recognize the device.
Today, it finally didn't had this problem for a while, so I took my chance to get back to stock ROM (because I need to send my phone to Samsung for camera problems). So I flashed stock ROM with ODIN, but I encoutered a problem: it didn't get further than the boot animation.
When I tried to reflash, ODIN didn't recognize my phone anymore, just like before. When I plug in my SGS2 to my computer while on download mode, it just keeps reconecting the USB, so the device can't be installed.
Tried a different computer. It kept being connected, but that comp sucks and it couldn't recognize my phone at all. My own computer also has problems recognizing the SGS2, but also has the problem that it can't stay connected.
Things to know:
- Other usb devices do stay connected, it's just for my sgs2
- I've tried different USB hubs etc., reinstalling Kies, uninstalling drivers.
- It does keep charging the phone, even when the computer makes the disconnect sound. That makes it even weirder!
Basically I'm seriously out of clues how to revive my phone
I don't want to send it to Samsung, scared of losing warranty.
You guys are my last hope!
to start the ball rolling, YOU SHOULDNT BE connecting sgs2 to a HUB, thats probably the fault, second, have you tried a different usb lead or a different computer with the same lead to either verify if its the phone or lead at fault??
No one on here can answer your question because it sounds like a hardware issue, wire or hub or charger port, but it is an elimination process and only you can do that.
If you try everything and still get no joy, restore your pc to an earlier point, uninstall the samsung drivers and re-install them etc etc.
I very much doubt its a software problem tho, looking at what you tried already, lots of people use hubs, if youre flashing roms and your connected to a hub then ya play a dangerous game and risk soft bricking your phone, most of the time odin wont recognise your phone through a hub, same if ya usb lead is too long, itll charge but no data. always connect it directly to the pc usb 2 port.

Ow, I think I used the wrong word. I meant to say port instead of hub.. Translation fail there. So that's not the problem, I've put the cable directly into the USB port.
I think you are right about the hardware problem. I'm just not sure where the problem is. I only have one cable, so I can't test that atm. But like I said, the connection problem does NOT occur on another computer. It keeps the device connected (as an unknown device though).
So it's weird: it looks like a SGS2 hardware problem, but on the same time it has a different problem on a different computer. It's really confusing...
Thanks for the quick reply by the way

Then please explain me how I could ever do that when there is no working ROM on my phone. I'm stuck on the 'restore with Kies' screen, like I told in my post (yes, still). And how it will ever work with ODIN? It won't...
Now not any computer is connecting with my sgs2. It just doesn't show anything (not even unknown device). I'm going to try to buy a new cable. Is it needed to buy a Samsung cable? Because it's harder to find than just a regular usb to micro usb cable (and more expensive ). This is my last hope. When it's not working, I need to send it to Samsung.

You need to replace your usb board within your phone. New part can be found on ebay for around $10. It's a really simple task replacing it. No soldering or anything.
It's been well documented on these boards.

[Q] USB connection charges but nothing else

I've had to sent my phone back to Samsung because it was not connecting to my computer via USB, it charged fine but nothing else, no message came up in the notification bar at all.
I don't know if its an issue the phone has always had as I have never tried connecting it before, it only came to light because I bought a Smart Dock and it would't work.
I've searched on the internet and cannot find anyone else having the same problem and mentioning it being sorted. Lots of cases of completely broken USB ports.
So has anyone ever heard of this issue and know if it was easily resolved by the Service Centre?
Cheers
Rich

Hi I had a similar problem 2 weeks ago but mine was also having intermitent problems with the charging connection as well, it would appear that it only takes a minute piece of fluff in the micro usb socket to cause havoc with the connections Sometimes this can be cleared by "blowing in the hole method" this worked temporarily for me but eventually I used a stiff toothbrush to clean out the socket and after that all connections work every time, I have now purchased a silicon plug for the socket and one for the earphone socket as well ( I am surprised that a flagship phone doesn't come with covers for these anyway
I had the same problem as well.
It's just a problem of drivers getting corrupted in your pc. You should have reinstalled them instead of sending the mobile to the service center.

If it was just the drivers then I would still have had the notification on my phone that USB had been connected. And when I dropped it off at the local service centre to see if it could be fixed without sending it off to the big one they tried plugging it in and confirmed it was not connecting.

Standard answers to this question
Reads as no Samsung |USB drivers or Kies installed or corrupt .
Failure to connect can also be dirty / failed USB port on phone / Bad USB port on PC .
Bad USB cable .
Or failed/ corrupt firmware on phone flash stock firmware .
Also possible failing component on motherboard .

I had exactly the same problem as yours i.e no usb icon showing in the status bar etc etc, and all i did was that I reinstalled the drivers using the all in one toolkit for the galaxy s3 and voila! my phone was detected by the p.c again
Maybe your's is a slightly different problem.
Cheers guys,
The problem was there before and after I upgraded to 4.1.2 so I guess that rules out the firmware option, maybe a dirty connection is a possibility but the tech guys on the phone or in the repair shop didn't try anything along those line. I gave it the obligatory blow out at some point but that didn't do much.
I think the guy in the shop was of the impression it will be a hardware fault with the port.
Just hope they don't take forever to get it back to me.

[Q] USB Device Not Recognized (have searched the forums)

I have googled and found a lot of thread on XDA Developers and other websites discussing this problem, but none of the suggested solutions worked for me. When I plug the usb cable to my sgs ii, it charges but nothing happens. there's no "connected as media device" notification on the phone, and a few seconds later "USB Device Not Recognized" shows up on the lower right of the PC screen.
I have tried using the galaxy s ii usb cable and the galaxy s4 usb cable (which is brand new and works flawlessly with SGS4). My phone is Android 4.1.2 and unrooted.
These are the things I have tried so far after googling a lot. and none works.
1. Used a toothpick to move the micro usb "tongue" upwards.
2. Turned off the phone, get the sd card out, turn it on again and plug the cable back in.
3. Factory Reset the Phone. still nothing.
4. Use Samsung Kies on my PC and troubleshoot the USB connection.
5. download Samsung USB Mobile Drivers, install, and plug the usb cable again. still nothing.
please tell me if I miss something that I could do to fix the problem. this already happened to 2 PC (at home and work). I need the usb connection to back up some game saves using Helium because I'm switching to Galaxy S4.
Replace USB board/port, obviously on the fritz. Cheap/quick/easy to replace yourself (minus the time spent waiting for the part to arrive once you've ordered it). Search for similar threads, this has been discussed here a lot this yr - there are 4 different revisions of the board, your replacement needs to be the same revision which is currently in the phone or you'll likely have problems. Those similar threads will have all the info you need.
Mistahbungle's on the right track, except that there are 3 revisions of the board....not 4.....
Look at this thread.....

Hey this used to happened to me also and all i did was flash a new rom and it started working again

DNA now won't connect to PC

So I was just going to change ROMs, and I realized that my DNA won't connect to a PC over USB anymore. I always plug it in at work via USB to a laptop to charge, and it would normally open the autostart/autorun window, which I would always notice because I'll switch computers often. Last week the autostart dialog stopped opening, but I was distracted with work being busy and it just went to the back of my mind.
Until now.
I've checked all the normal trivial stuff... trying different cables, using different USB ports, and obviously different PCs. It also won't be detected by ADB. Yes, developer options are enabled, yes USB debugging is enabled. It sounds to me like its the port on the phone, so then I'm screwed, but I was just wondering if anyone knows any tricks I can try.
Are you running a custom rom? Go to settings>storage>storage settings>USB computer connection and make sure the connect as Media device (MTP) is checked. Same thing happened to me and some how this setting was unchecked

You going to laugh at me but download PDAnet and it will redownload the correct drivers.

Have you found a solution for this? I am in the exact same situation with no solutions working for me. I tried PDAnet and many other things. The device is unrecognized by my computer completely not even showing up in the device manager. This likely is a hardware issue, but I'm rooted with no way to return to stock because I can't connect to my computer which makes me unable to use my warranty for repair. This is a really unfortunate pickle as I'm not sure if I can even do anything at this point. I have found online that people with a hardware issue with connecting to their computers also had the slow charge notification when charging either through the computer or the power adapter. Mine does not display slow charge which gives me some hope that it is somehow a driver issue. Do you get the slow charge notification at all?
EDIT: It's a hardware issue for me. Noticed my charger is sticking slightly more out than usual, and it just can't get the right connection

Hey guys, just figured I'd follow up. Sorry for the delay, XDA email notifications somehow ended up in my spam folder.
Anyway, for me it just turned out to be that all the cables I tried were bad. Pretty low odds, I'm actually surprised both my cable at home and the one at work were all bad. Sure enough I tried it with a coworker's cable and it worked fine.
