Didn't really know if this was the right place to post this, but I was just wondering what everyone uses their rooted me7 S4 for? Like what sort of apps do you utilize since there isn't much as far as customizing that we can do without an unlocked bootloader. Just a discussion for everyone to spitball in while we wait for the next android god to unlock our phones!

Used to do it for the different ROMs and using the MODs.
Now I've kind of outgrown the whole "crack-flashing" phase, and just root it to try any new ground-breaking MOD/ROM/App, etc.
Also, I just love knowing that I have the freedom of being Rooted.
XDA community is beautiful.
It's easier just to name the apps I mainly use when rooted:
AdAway (ad blocker)
Titanium Backup (backup app)
DroidWall (firewall)
Also uninstalling/freezing bloatware. Of course, it's awesome because you can flash ROMs, too.
Theming and removing bloat
I rooted so I could use Wallet, a few other apps and to remove bloat. I can't stand the crap Verizon puts on their phones. 3+ years ago, I'd flash a rom almost daily but I too have grown out of the crack flashing phase.
Well, at first I used admin/sudo/root to learn what made my computer work, and consequently what made it stop working, and how to repair things when the system didn't like what I did to it. Then how to make the computer more responsive through config edits.
When I got my first andriod it was pretty much the above all over again but way littler. I don't think I can count how many times I've soft bricked my phones by poking around in file systems I shouldn't have been poking around in.
Then I focused on how to make my devices faster without using prebuilt "OMGITSFASTHUMINAHUMINAHUMINA" script pack zips found across the internet and here. So learned how scripts worked in general to automate a lot of mundane functions.
Then, My buddy Kyle was working on a performance kang of liquid for the DX. I offered to help get more performance out of it. And then I eventually took over the ROM building in that project and a bunch of others for that series of devices.
Root isn't so much to me about "check it out bro I'm rooted, I've got stock cyanogenmod10 on, yeah high five" as it is about what I'm able to do with that ability and more importantly what I'm able to learn by actually using that ability. That's why I try to make my updater scripts print on screen what the script is doing... To potentially help someone who didn't know what was going on potentially learn a little bit.
Besides all that, I enjoy theming my UI. And with how much I end up flashing ROMs RomToolbox Pro has been my go to for app backups. :good:

Theoretically speaking you could run another ROM assuming it's compatible with the stock kernel.
It almost begs the question, maybe it's time for an In-Android (runtime) ROM flashing tool non-dependent on recovery. You wouldn't gain the other benefits of a normal recovery but you'd at least be able to flash ROM's, sans certain elements.
Aside from the performance and mod benefits, I find it therapeutic. Everytime I freeze/uninstall Vznavigator, Back up assistant plus, Verizon tones or anything Verizon related app I feel good knowing im doing mankind a favor by eliminating an atrocious and insulting excuse of an app.
Plus...theres nothing better than the feeling you get when you toggle that wifi hotspot switch on, especially after you've just successfully upgraded and kept your unlimited data by enduring the long, grueling and degrading task of dealing with the incompetence that is Vzw customer service.

I prefer to root just because of the awesome features.. Open source will always be popular and gives everyone their own chance to be different.
Remove bloatware, remove the persistent WiFi on the dropdown (which eats battery life), adaway so I get rid of stupid ads (I prefer to pay for the app and not the ads). ROM's when the bootloader gets unlocked (again).

Well I did a bit of digging further and found this info. The YouTube video and DroidForums thread requires custom recovery, but the XDA-Devs link at the bottom seems to have a method for ME7 FW release. Trying that tomorrow.

I suggested something similar in the bounty thread. I was thinking something similar to boot manager where you could flash ROMs while in android to the SD... Could that work?

Saw this app called pdroid, allows you to set the permissions apps have(better than other apps like droidwall), probably gonna patch it onto my nook color, but would make even more sense on my phone.. only problem is that for HTC devices it says it requires s-off.(updated: apparently this isn't an issue)
I guess my question would be if anyone would know a way to workaround? It doesn't require root.. I am wondering if there is a way I can patch the rom before I flash it perhaps?
Also, I didn't know that apparently there is a feature that cuts off all network connectivity for selected apps built into cm7.. I'm starting to think I didn't know about 99% of the features cm7 allowed. That is probably why I always went with MIUI.
Anyways, figured I would ask here, or perhaps someone else would think this was interesting, or maybe something like this could be included in future roms. It evidently has a tiny memory footprint, uses little processor, etc.. so don't see what the harm could be. I'll have time to play with it this weekend I am thinking..

I saw the permissions app when I was looking into it, apparently the way pdroid functions you are less likely to get a force close from apps that you cut permissions off.
I'm not the paranoid type, there are some apps that aren't designed very efficiently that I would cut off features from like wakelock, boot_receive, gps, etc.. and sadly those apps don't show up on the list in the free version(like facebook, I don't want it doing ANYTHING unless I am using it). The pro version might do it, but I'd rather donate to a dev of an app like pdroid that gives you the full features than buy an app hoping the paid version does what the free version doesn't.. 15 minutes just isn't enough time to explore some paid apps.
I'm sure the developer stated it needed s-off in good faith, only recently was it possible to have a boot loader with s-on (unlocked) and be able to have r/w access to /system. Previously s-off would be required for this. I'm sure pdroid will work with a s-on unlocked boot loader, with a rooted system. The only difference between s-on unlocked and s-off is that the radio and boot loader can't be overwritten when not signed from HTC. As far as custom roms and root capabilities are functionally the same.

Well maybe you can share what you know about LBE privacy guard compared to pdroid? I've already spent too much time being distracted from school work the last few days or I would look into it myself.. but in a few days I will have time to mess around with all of this guilt-free.
What rom are you using? I keep seeing people post the flashable zip file patch output in different forums, maybe we could do that here for others who may be using the same rom?

Both apps are rock solid.
LBE Privacy Guard does the job nicely, coupled with an intuitive UI, firewall, data monitor...
PDroid, love it. Although compatibility is issue. Requires patch. It however gives extra option in privacy department
Whichever you decide to choose, its a good pick

LBE seems pretty good so far, I like that it allows you to change the permissions of system apps.. and to choose "prompt" when some apps try to access permissions. The only thing I wonder is how the monitoring part will impact battery life, and the only thing I wish it did was allow was a change to the wake lock permission.
The main thing I am trying to accomplish is to cut off communication for certain apps altogether EXCEPT when I use them- facebook, google voice, g+, stuff like that. I also want to cut off the ability for certain apps to wakelock the phone at all, like gtalk(I don't use it at all) and a few others. The fact that some of these services don't allow you to change how they sync or they hold a wakelock I don't want.. I want to change that.
Would pdroid better accomplish what I am trying to do? Does it allow permissions changes of system apps?

it is pretty light on battery. pdroid is better with battery from the looks of it. Wake lock is not part of the supported permission for both apps. lbe privacy supports firewall. for gtalk, sign out when not using it. for g+, uncheck it from sync. for Google voice, ... dunno yet

I've turned off sync on g+ and voice, signed out of gtalk.. but I'm trying to eliminate any wakelocks on these apps I rarely or never use. The biggest wakelock every time is the alarm sys, if I do a "dumpsys alarm > alarm.txt" in terminal, many of these apps are still keeping the phone from sleeping right..
Ultimately, I am probably trying to beat a dead horse, I got things tweaked to the point I'll never really have to worry about killing my battery in a day, but it seems like one of the features of us android users(or maybe it is xda users).. we want TOTAL control over what our phones do and don't do, lol.
LBE was heavy on my battery and Permissions Denied's interface is not intuitive enough.

I've been using LBE since it was recommended to me.. and even though I don't see any wakelocks caused by it, and IT reduced the wakelocks other apps on the phone would cause, by battery life has degraded majorly. It is a cool app, but rather than get 24+ hours on a light use day, I have been getting at most 14 with barely any use. It may be because I have it monitoring my data use, so I may continue using it after I turn off monitoring to see if that is the draining part.
To answer your question, based on how I read the thread.. one of the downloads in the thread is used to CREATE the patch(and remover) which you can then flash and/or share with others.
PDroid is the only one I haven't tried yet, so think I'm gonna remove LBE and give it a try. One of these apps will surely give me control over these other apps, without being a bigger pain than those other apps.
Did you give PDroid a try and have any success with the Amaze?
If so, it would be great to share the patch.
I've been using LBE, avoiding the re-flash to deodex / Zipalign, for now, and it seems like its pretty good / handles system apps pretty well but I'd think about running both in tandem to cover what each doesn't do. Hmm

Lol most of what you ask comes with flashing custom roms and kernels. I guess you can start by exploring root only apps...?

Try System Tuner (free on the market)
adjust clock speed when the phone is on standby. You will see a significance in battery. Or you can try a different battery app. Explore your options.

highly recommend titanium backup on the market it's worth the price...you can get rid of bloatware with it too, and back up and and all programs and their data...
the person above is right, system tuner is a good program, but I don't know how it'll do with the stock kernel, if you downclock your phone you might start to see some lag...if you do decide to do that make sure you go to boot settings in system tuner and make sure set cpu on boot completion so everytime your phone restarts you don't have to reset the settings you put in system tuner..
honestly the best way to get a better battery life is don't install a lot of junk and you can also use the program juice defender...
install badass battery program and see what is sucking up the battery...

I actually already have titanium backup .... Its a great app.... That's how I removed all my bloatware.....

Removed too much when i removed bloatware.... Bluetooth = gone... I effed up!
Should always freeze apps before removing permanently. Did you do a nandroid or titanium backup?

Similar situation here. Rooted my Droid Razr Maxx today to remove the Verizon bloatware. I only did this because they where insisting I update their apps and give them more permissions and I didn't use them either.
I'm not looking to use a custom rom or anything, just wanted to remove those apps. I did use the backup option on each app prior to deleting it.
The Beginners guide suggests I add CWM. Is this really needed for my situation or should I get this setup as well? I won't be loading any roms and plan to stick with the default one. I am fine with it just wanted the bloatware to be gone.
I would've flashed a recovery first. Just because you can make a backup and reflash it just incase something goes wrong. Like removing something you shouldn't have. To each his own. But if the RZR Maxx is anything like the older Moto devices you can use RSD Lite to go back to completely stock. So since this is the HTC Amaze Forum I don't know if that option is available for the RZR. You can navigate yourself to those forums and ask over there.

I used titanium backup to backup the apps before I deleted them.
I haven't used TB in a long time.. But I don't think you can restore system/apps after they are removed. Unless its different now.

I have yesterday flashed ICS first time in my life, rooted it and installed titanium backup Pro (the first time too). Then I uninstalled more than forty precious pre-installed apps what definitely were placed there for my benefit and thriving...
So far everything’s running just perfect. I can’t imaging smartphone can perform better than what I hold and play in my hands. I am so happy again with my amaze.
However, I still have seven apps “frozen” in my TB. I do not understand what to do.
1. Google Backup Transport.
2. Google One Time Init.
3. Google Partner Setup.
4. Maps.
5. PC Synchronization.
6. Location Picker.
7. Network Location.
PLEASE someone who understand the meaning of the aforementioned ones advise me so I would better refrain from removing them too..

If you ask me, those apps that you have frozen are quite important to your phone. I have to go to work I am late so I'll try to respond in depth tomorrow when I get back.

OUCH! That's a bit of an issue, I'd say... Thank heavens for Non-Touchwiz ROMs! =]
On a bit of a sidenote, it looks like the method used by that exploit uses similar formatting to standard service mode access commands built into the stock OS... I wonder if this method can launch other service mode functions? If so, that could be a bit scary... Especially if it happens to someone unaware of this sort of thing...

It would appear it is not just a Touchwiz issue. While not necessarily applicable to our phones, this has apparently been known for quite a while and has been fixed in JB and other incremental updates on other phones, so maybe the same can be done for us.

I agree. Sadly I had to leave the JB ROMS due to issues experienced. Came back to FJ ICS b5 due to it's completeness. But now I fear this exploit. I did the test run and the results were that I am vulnerable.

The vulnerability test failed for me using exDailer so it is unclear to me of this is actually a fix.
It's not the dialer but done via HTML code through a browser.

Hi gregsarg, I'm running Saurom 2.3.6 - v7.1 too, and my Note's not directly vulnerable to the USSD exploit with GrooVe IP installed. To clarify somewhat, the stock touchwiz dialer is set to default, so the system should be vulnerable to a direct url attack. Nonetheless, when I test for the USSD exploit vulnerability with the stock browser, using a safe test like dylanreeveDOTcom/phone.php ***, the select dialer window pops up instead of the system initiating the touchwiz dialer like it normally would by default. This at least stops the exploit from being initiated unless the stock dialer's manually selected. Nevertheless, when I manually select the touchwiz dialer with dylanreeve's USSD Exploit Test url, the touchwiz dialer does show my IMEI, d'oh! This confirms that Saurom is vulnerable to the exploit without a third party dialer installed. Moreover, as you mentioned, the next step should be to test other browsers in order to see if the exploit can be stopped without the need for a third party dialer. On that note, have you found any browsers yet that prevent the USSD exploit?
*** If anyone would like to safely test for the exploit, just type dylanreeveDOTcom/phone.php with a "." instead of the "DOT" into your browser, and please post your findings, including your browser, dialer, & specific touchwiz based ROM build.

No concrete list at this point, however it is logical to assume that with so many browsers sharing the same engine, and simply skin changed ....that many browsers are affected .
The fact that the GB stock builds require an additional step to access the TW dialer, is at least a small safety net, unlike ICS and JB ..
These builds forward directly to the dialer, and execute the exploit.
I knew that GB was my favorite for a reason ....LOL
I know the development community is very aware of the issue, and we shouldn't have to wait long for a patch...or even a modified browser Apk to shield the exploit....
Meanwhile....Samsung is hard at work patching the issue on their end.

The exploit is a crafted HTML code, that opens the stock touchwiz dial pad, and auto dials the hard reset code for samsung devices....(SGN, SGS, skyrocket ...pretty much all of the devices using a TW rom base )
It is indigenous to the touchwiz UI, and the touchwiz dialer in any current Samsung rom or it's variant.
The solution at the moment, was thought to be the use of a third party dialer, but the exploit will persist there also, but does require the user to select the dialer of choice, whether it be the stock pad , or a third party app.
Either way ...the exploit will trigger once the code runs, or the user selects a dialer option.
The result is, the device immediately wipes data, and will hard reset the contents.
Although the exploit does no permanent damage I.E. chips etcetera, it is certainly malicious in it's design and intent.
Nonetheless, its a bug that has no business in our affairs, and needs a permanent patch...g

Hehehe, it was the first ROM I loaded my Note, and even after testing my share of ICS & JB builds, it's still my daily driver - go to ROM, due to it's combination of stability, decent speed, built in line recording, and the ability to add in ad-hoc wifi support. Yikes... getting off topic.
As far as the USSD exploit goes, I'm not at all worried about having to revert to stock to patch or even the actual exploit hitting my Note, due to regular CWM backups, the extremely low odds of it actually happening, and faith in all the incredible developers. And I've seen countless users fail to backup anything at all..
And then are left starting over from scratch if something goes wrong like this bug.....g

Yes... completely agree... current backups are a must have, especially for any mission critical device, and everyone should backup on a regular basis regardless. Even if it's just to save the time and trouble of having to set up from scratch again. Heck, it's mandatory for me to have current completely cloned spare drives for my laptops etc..., and on as well as off device complete backups for smartphones etc... just in case some type of system failure, data loss, or data corruption occurs. Plus, as they say, time is money, and backups have saved myself as well as millions of others plenty of both in the long run.

Erik Thauvin recently released an app (available for free on Google Play) that stops the USSD code from automatically being dialed. The app is called noUSSD and is free.
I am not associated with the developer and am only passing along what I found in my search.

This just a conversation to get me to finally bite the bullet and finally root and install a ROM.
With all the delays or possible cancelations of JB on my i717, I have just about convinced myself to root and installation a rom. Avatar is looking good.
I have been using the go launcher and all its sub systems: phone, IM, twitter all the stuff so I need to figure out to remove all the go replace sub components. Is there a panel on one of the releases that makes this easy?
So do yous guys still think the i717 will still get an official 717 update?
Also, if looks like jb will remove the ability to move apps to the sd. At lease it did on my note 10.1. Think they will do the same if they release jb on the 717?
I read through all the fans and understand backup the IMs, data, contacts. What about apps (I have a ton and chagrin having reinstall
So first root, use titanium backup and then install a ROM? Also what is a modem? Usually I am familiar with the term as in phone interface. What is modem rom for?

I bet the original note gets a JB update. But I also bet the Note 3 will be out by then and Note 2 people will be begging for their key lime pie!!!
It doesn't matter what phone your on, your always going to be waiting for an update of some sort. So why wait... root it! It unlocks SO much potential in these phones. I've been flashing roms for years and love it! I've never had any problems because I've always done a lil research on software out there and followed the directions to a TEE! Since you're new at this I will direct you to this thread. Read the first 3 posts. They will answer 90% of your questions, especially post 3. Once your schooled and brain has cooled a lil, this is basically what you gotta do to get started.
So happy reading and rooting!

You don't need root permission to flash a recovery, a custom rom, or a different modem.
But with regards to rooting, its not like you're climbing Mt. Everest naked without oxygen. Its a two minute project.
And you only need to root if there is some app or some system action you need to do that having a stock system won't allow.
If you're undecided, then you don't need to do it. Those that need to just do it.

and also you can remove applications placed by the phone company that sometimes only eat some of the battery, even if you never even open them!
You can remove ad banners off the browser as well! saving data if you are not on unlimited plan(like myself)
hmm.. personally i root because of that reason, the ad blocking on the browser(i don't mind them on the apps unless they're sketching apps)
2nd reason would be being able to use the app named "autostarts" which controls the autorun's of any app on your phone! Wisely used, you can stop user apps from restarting themselves and such, just never use on system apps and that means more ram and more battery

Maybe it isn't climbing Everest, but I do rely on my phone and in turn I need it reliable. Lockups and waiting for reboots is a worry.
I need apps to work at least 95 percent of the time. I understand and occasionally sunspot caused glitch is acceptable but should be occasional. So yes, I do worry about my constant companion.
I am not just talking about rooting but finding the right ROM which will make my phone more usable and more reliable than the At&t stock rom, just trying to find the right one and install it right the first time.

the best part is it is very easy to do! even a silly girl like me could root and do all this "mt everest" stuff ehehe its very simple!
and really nothing bad will happen to your phone and i assume you take good care of it :highfive:
i dont evne mind those warrantys things, i take care of my androids as i would a pet or something
and make sure they come in good state and all when out of the box
when i had my first android some years ago i softbricked it and cried! on my first attempt.. because i skipped one step(NEVER SKIP A STEP) but then i saw there's solution to everything.. unless it exploded or something but that never happens yay :victory:

You don't need a rooted phone to install roms. Just a PC, cable, and Odin software.
What you could possibly need is to install a custom recovery like TWRP. That is WAY more important that worrying about rooting your phone. Why? Because you could install roms from your phone and skip the PC. All non-stock roms are already rooted.
You have 16gigs of internal memory for apps - thats like about 200 apps, so you don't need to move them to external sd card.
What you should do is make sure all those apps store their data on the external card. Then you have protected your data and kept your memory for apps.
What app/process you you need to do that requires root permission of your file system? Every concern you mentioned has nothing to do with root permisions of your file system.
Maybe your question should be "Why should I flash non-stock roms over the stock Gingerbread I have now? A Conversation"

If you want dependable, don't go past 4.04 ICS ROMs, because above that, the ROMs come from other phones and developers have to squeeze them into our phone. The result is random reboots, freezing, main features not working (TV out, s-pen, Bluetooth connectivity issues, to name a few main ones).
Everyone else is going to argue to defend their reason for what they did to their phone -- I answered based on your stated needs.

That's a good reason. But our JB ROMs are the result of great effort and professionalism from our developers, but they are experimental and have issues. So to gain some features, you will definitely lose some.
I have been using 4.1.# then 4.2.2 and I think I'm going back to the N7005 ROM because I miss the features I bought the phone for. Anyway, as someone said, read and decide what the tradeoffs are, and you can always go backwards.
Ok, decided to go with Kangparanoid rom... Right now I have a stock unrooted ROM. What is the best way to create a perfect backup of what I have now to restore current state.
Also is there an easy way to restore all my apps (include what's been moved to my external sd card) post jb upgrade?

Nice rom choice! I'm actually using it right now!!
I vote for titanium backup to backup all your stuff. I use the pro version so I can't remember if you can move apps to sd card in the free version or not. Once you open titanium you have it backup EVERYTHING! It will backup your apps, call logs, text messages, wifi passwords, bookmarks, alarms, etc..... Do this on your phone now. Then root your phone and make a nandroid backup in recovery. Install your rom and sign into your phone using the same gmail acct you had previously. You'll find that most of your apps will begin to reinstall themselves. Once you got titanium on your new rom installed open it but do not, I repeat do NOT restore everything! Titanium backs up system files that shouldn't be restored because they were from your previous rom. Just click individual apps that you want to restore. Titanium color codes everything nicely. System files are red and mean business! Apps installed already are white. Your call logs and messages will be yellow. Those you can restore. Backed up apps not installed will have a line thru them. I've been using titanium for years since android 1.5 came out. So it works on any rom!

My job gives me a Samsing S4 from Verizon that is filled with bloat. I have to manually go in and disable everything which takes about 4 hours or so. I am looking for an app that can do it for me but it needs to be a well known app not something that somebody just posts an apk. Any auggestions?
We are not allowed to root the phones. It would be great if I could put a googe play edition or developer edition rom on it or something but I don't think that's possible.

You will have to root your phone for all this. You can only flash stock rom on the device without rooting it.
What bloat wares are we talking about specifically? Do you mean all the S-voice/S-Note/Air gestures??
They can be activated and deactivated from the pull down menu. Other things need to be disabled manually!There is no work around this without root. You can try the widgets on the screen that allow you to disable wi-fi and bluetooth but its nothing new than what samsung offers from the pulldown menu

You can't remove system apps without root. Clean Master has a function to remove bloat if you're rooted. I don't know if this is changed to disabling if you're not rooted, because my devices are rooted. I seem to remember a previous version of Clean Master had something like that. It merely took you to the app info scree, one at a time, but at least it did it sequentially instead of you having to hunt for each one on your own. Maybe that still exists.
Since Android 4.1, many bloatware type apps can just be disabled via the the built-in Application Manager in your Settings app. Disabling it will hide it from the launcher and make it so it does not run, essentially doing the same thing as uninstalling it. It is better this way because some phones will not properly update if something is modified or removed from the /system partition. Also worth noting in regards to this as it is a popular misconception, removing these unwanted apps will not provide you with more usable storage as they are contained in /system/app and the apps you install via the Play Store or 3rd party sources will only install to /data/app unless rooted and moved.
That being said, TowelRoot is a newer rooting method for many newer phones running 4.4+(especially Galaxies like the S4 and Note 3). This root method is done via an app on the phone and only takes seconds and does not trip Knox. You could root, freeze what you needed and then unroot without anyone the wiser, though, of course, this is done at your own risk - like any other mod.

You will have to root your phone for all this. You can only flash stock rom on the device without rooting it.
What bloat wares are we talking about specifically? Do you mean all the S-voice/S-Note/Air gestures??
They can be activated and deactivated from the pull down menu. Other things need to be disabled manually!There is no work around this without root. You can try the widgets on the screen that allow you to disable wi-fi and bluetooth but its nothing new than what samsung offers from the pulldown menu

How do I flash stock roms without rooting?
As I mentioned every time I need to do a factory reset it takes about 4 hours of disabling things to get it to the state I want.

You can't remove system apps without root. Clean Master has a function to remove bloat if you're rooted. I don't know if this is changed to disabling if you're not rooted, because my devices are rooted. I seem to remember a previous version of Clean Master had something like that. It merely took you to the app info scree, one at a time, but at least it did it sequentially instead of you having to hunt for each one on your own. Maybe that still exists.

Yes you can disable them but it takes about 4 hours to do it each time. There's a lot of them. About 95% of stuff needs to be disabled.
Towelroot looks great unfortunately I am not able to root the phone. They don't use knox. I can do anything but root the phone really. I really just want vanilla android I'm a bit sick of touchwiz. I'd love to just flash to the developer edition or something.

The S4s bootloader is locked so basically not a lot to choose from. And as others have mentioned you need root to gain access to remove bloatware. Sadly samsung phones on VZW are filled with it as well as many other phones, it's not limited to just samsung.
And navigator may be better than Google maps but maps is free and having been a former user of both NFL mobile (when it was free) and navigator I'm happy I got rid of both of them

I'm almost sure they are on stock as its a work phone and mentioned in the first post that they aren't allowed to root

That's very true. Some people however don't know you need root to remove bloatware or unneeded apps
