A solution for those who don't think the Ultra Camera is good Enough :) - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

OK so most people wouldn't use this but I thought it was an interesting read for those into sony devices

What an overkill solution. It's actually a complete camera, and sony took the display and controls out, and charge you more for... less
But it looks pretty

Thats a wicked solution, thanks for the post

i
I plan on getting it when it's available, but I read it won't be out until sometime in 2014. Something else I put on order is the iblazr since the phone doesn't have flash.
http://iblazr.com/
I hope with the Sony lens camera and the iBlazr that some app like Camera Zoom FX would eventually support both devices to work together.

Great as these options are I have to be honest If I was going to spend the cash on a lens/flash like that I would probably just buy a point and shoot.
I just know if I had to carry anything in addition to the handset it wouldn't get used, or it would get misplaced.

Great idea but the thing which stopped me from getting one was that it would only be compatible with a limited number of camera apps. iblazr's and a handful of other no names. Full featured ones which make the most out of the xzu's hardware like the default sony one, FX camera etc aren't supported, so there really isn't much point to it

I agree somewhat, but this lens will take better quality pictures than any point n shoot out there right now. This might change by the time the lens comes out which may sway me the other direction depending on price.

Currently yes it will only be supported by a few apps, but I can guarantee that if this accessory takes off that app publishers will support it in their apps. Plus I read somewhere that iBlazr will offers source code for app publishers. Even if publishers don't support it, it will still be a convenient device for the XZU because there is no flash and I'm sure when you take pictures in dark settings you will wish you had it on hand. Just my opinion.

Has Asus given a reason for the lack of Face Unlock on the Prime?
Our front facing cam is a high enough resolution, we have ICS, and from what I've read on these forums the files are on the device.
We've had multiple ICS updates. When properly configured it is a killer feature and great marketing tool.
Why have they not enabled it?
I wouldn't wait on Asus to do it. one of our developers will enable it soon enough.
I found that odd too.
But really, it's doesn't matter to me if it's there. I just wanted to see how well it works.
I don't even have the lockscreen enabled, it's not really necessary
Face unlock is fun. I used it on the Atrix, the Evo 3D, the Evo and a few GNex and Nexus S devices as well. It was fun in the way Siri is fun though (trust me, I hate Apple, not because I am a google fan boy, because they haven't been the greatest either, but Apple's business ethics and their use of proprietary, non-open source irks me, as well as their litigious nature, sorry I digress... I am also drunk, ha). Having an 4S at work to goof off with is fun, and Siri is neat... for a few days, and when you want to show it off... but that it, after awhile the little quirks get to you, such as "Sorry, dont recognize you!" then the pin coming up. It did this if the light was just a little different, even after tuning it (taking multiple pics, shaven, unshaven, sunglasses, hat, haircut, etc)
ASUS is being tsundere to the community.
Question: If you have face lock activated, can you unlock the prime using a photo?

From what I have read in reviews - yes you can.
I feel FU is really just a gimmick, not something I would use, but wouldnt mind being able to test it on my prime
Face unlock actually works pretty well on the Galaxy Nexus once it's been trained. I'm just wondering why Asus has not enabled it since it doesn't seem to be a technical issue and they went out of the way to use pretty decent cams on the Prime.

Yep, you can see videos done of it on the web. Even a video of a guy using a picture on his phone to unlock another phone. It is a totally hooky and worthless function really. Neat, but not really useful.

Totally. The good thing is that a port will be a lot easier since all of the component's are the same, save for the camera. But it still has the OIS.

Few roms would be nice IF they all had different features to add. Right now we have multiple roms that are very similar... I hope to see a lot of built in mods/xposed framework
Our big problem is the following:
The Nexus 5 will have normal volume/power keys (i.e at the side of the device). I'm pretty certain that because of this, it will have no Knock-ON feature.
Even if it will be easy to port the Nexus 5 Kitkat stock ROM to the LG G2, I don't think any G2 owner here will trade the Knock-ON feature for KitKat.

KnockON is great, but it isn't really anything revolutionary. I love the feature, especially with the back buttons, but I also had similar functionality back with my GNex. I believe the modification is in the kernel, so I don't really see a reason that we won't be able to have it on AOSP roms. Am I missing something?
Knock knock will not be a feature of Nexus 5 irrespective of the placement of volume keys.

Whoa whoa whoa. I wouldn't say trade people wouldn't want to trade the Knock-On feature for KitKat. We don't know what kind of features will be in KitKat. Who knows there could be something really cool.
I think what you were trying to say is does any G2 owner willing to trade their G2 for a Nexus 5 just to get KitKat early in November. I think the answer is NO but we all still want the KnockOn feature with KitKat ideally and it should come in early 2014.

Depends on what 4.4 has to offer, it may be minor update for all we know. Plus we can flash back and forth between the two roms all day long.... also how long will it take for another dev to make a similar feature? If not we will have to see what 4.4 has to offer

No matter what KitKat has to offer, Knock-ON is a necessity for many of us. For example, how will you turn the device ON when situated in the car holder, or while you run and it's in an arm-band, or even if it's just on the desk ?
The G2 without the Knock-ON feature becomes a severely crippled device.

My point was, that if you want KitKat ASAP with your G2, your best bet would be a Nexus 5 ported ROM. But, by going this route, I predict you'll lose Knock-On.

That's very interesting. If this solution is as battery efficient as Knock-ON (or better), then this is an excellent alternative.

I don't understand what the big deal is about knock on... I remember when I had my gnex someone here on the xda forums developed an app that could use gestures with the screen off to wake or to open certain apps... Just check out the "tap tap app" in the market... Surely one of our devs could incorporate this into a rom?

I just tried the "tap tap app" on an older phone and it doesn't work out as nice as Knock On. It doesn't seem to turn off or on the phone with two taps like I expect it would. I would strongly not recommend the "tap tap app" be baked into the ROM. It is not stable enough.
I am certain that the Knock-On feature is a *hardware* feature and not a simple software feature. Of course it can be implemented in software, but at the expense of significantly increased battery usage (the capacitive touchscreen must stay on). It's kind of like implementing active (on-screen) notifications in software, versus optimizing the hardware for it (like it is in the Moto X). Battery life would drop significantly in a software-only solution.

Or you guys could just return it and get the Z1? Why do people care about the camera which aren't even what the phone is about?

I don't know.. Last time i used the camera was in september.. and before that when i used my Note i would maybe take 20 photos a year. People who bought the ZU and thought that the camera would be great, didn't do enough research. BUT still, the camera is fantastically bad, and Sony should correct this so it's possible to use it without being shocked every time we use it. It's currently on the same level as my old Game Boy camera. Fine, it's not but it's close.
And about the "petition". Forget about it. It's the least effective thing in the world. Contact them directly and talk to a human being. It works much better, and you'll know that your message has been received. If possible, try to get transfered to the dev section.

* Random info *
When I first got my device, I called my mobile provider to enable 3G connectivity, and had to quote my IMEI number. The guy at the end of the phone didn't have a clue what device it was. He did a google, and almost sh*t himself. How did you get that? I've never seen it before... I want it!..

Precisely. The camera I knew was average having done my due diligence before purchase. The rest of the phone is by far the best I've ever had for screen size, light weight and battery life among the other features. If you buy phones to take pictures then this isn't meant for you.

sorry mate. I did have a chuckle, but only because I've now been 7 days without my Ultra.
Apparently reports are in about removing the OEM protector, and replacing with your own one improves display and colour quality.
But the pain and time to do it is quite intensive. If mine does this, I think I will remove it.

Pal, we aren't getting any Software improvements. Chromatic aberrations shows clearly the use of a very simple and compact.camera module with reduced optical compounds to fit into less-than-six millimeter space (6.4mm less the fit case support) but we didnt get the xzu expecting stunning camera performance, as long as Sony never promised onit. Right? There is much far other cool stuff on the device..

I totally agree that the camera of the XZU is a waste (especially the low light performance) but whilst I sort of knew this from the review and the fact that it has no flash, my reasons for buying this phone are totally different-it is my 1st true Phablet.
Is a Petition needed to bring this to the attention of Sony, I think so considering how much money we have all paid or are paying through our contract deals via our network providers. of all the things annoying is why not put a bloody flash of some sort into this beast, you idiotic product designers in Sony. At least they should have the guts to learn from budget Chinese brands like Oppo, HDC, Zopo and UMI.
I have heard that a kickstarter project by the name of IBlazr is soon to launch an 4X Led embedded external flash unit for Mobile Phones and I will get this when it is released but why should we rely on external accessories to complete a faulty design.
To help you all make the best of your camera app, I strongly urge everyone to download the leaked Camera app of the Nexus 5/Android Kitkat 4.4, I installed this and I see that it makes a real difference. Hope the mods will customize it for better usability on the XZU as when I use it the controls of the camera appear to be partially hidden behind the Navigation Buttons of the XZU, whilst this is annoying, the app is very useful and can be used as the daily camera app replacement and to those that want to praise all other replacement apps, I tried all and if you want near stock experience, this is currently our best hope.

better stick with the stock 4.3 camera, same quality but can do photosphere ( 4.4 crash when combine photosphere)
Its a hardware issue. Period.
3rd party app helps but marginal. If camera is really a big issue, I would suggest getting a Z1 or wait out for XZU2.
The XZU is marketed as having a good camera.

I bought this XZU because I thought that aside from it being big and fast, it has a good "stunning" camera. The image quality is crap!
Sony should resolve the camera issue, otherwise, it is DECEPTIVE advertising.

Maybe because those people didn't buy it for the camera because who would? Some people apparently.
Still makes me wonder why people went with Z Ultra if it matters so much?
Yes, the phone is large and nice but come on, use some common sense. If the camera is that important that you need it then the Ultra is clearly not for you? I took some photos, they were watchable.
Have you guys even tried other camera apps? I just tried this and the pictures aren't bad at all :s.

Soooo, why do you still have your Ultra? Why aren't you complaining about the lack of flash as well? You could always glue one on.

What's the deal with the hands ons?

All the hands ons seem very similar due to what seems to be excessive limitations. This close to launch and Google seem to be being quite secretive considering they've already had their announcement - is it possible there are more surprises for the tablet and Lollipop being held back?

My S4 has an IR blaster. I thought it was really cool at first, but I've only used it a handful of times and I've had it for a year. YMMD

Same here
Waste of time ir blaster never used, always busy flashing new ROMs could not be bothered to setup again. I also think there is a few hidden surprises.
hands ons seem to be limited to a few minutes, all seem to point out the same thing, as if there is a google rep sitting behind of camera - whom dictated before the hands on what is off limits at this time.

I also get that sense to lol, I personally think Google have instructed short and brief video reviews, And also have to be filmed within a restricted amount of time. So I guess will have to wait for the tablet to be fully released before we get an in depth review, by then for most reading this it will be to late because it will be already in our hands! [emoji12]

exactly, most of us here have pre-ordered based on specs and previous know how relating to the nexus program. The hands-on at the moment are just satisfying our enthusiasm for the device. For people already on the fence about the product, they wont generally pre-order anyway so the real hands on will be more crucial for them when time comes.
Its because its still running pre-release software and Google doesn't want the first batch of reviews/benchmarks to be based on an un-optimized OS giving the Nexus 9 a bad image before its launch.
Expect a software update right before the official release of the Nexus 9 followed by lifting of the embargo and a flood of benchmarks/reviews coming in.

Back when I was in highschool I had a HP PDA (yes this was a while ago) and you could use it as a remote control. Let's just say we never had to watch anything stupid in class because the TV never worked.
None of the hands on seem to be showing how the device sounds like. With the boomsound speakers, i thought it would be one of the biggest selling points. I guess this is part of the limitations they impose on these jounalists. Also, it seems like none of them were signed on to a Google account or had any wifi connection so its not like they can just go to youtube and play a video.

It really is quite bizarre, Liam Spradlin on G+ said that they were "not allowed" to show anything in depth, there must be something held back (I hope).
Android central podcast on Fri said be patient, they will have reviews, and "without violating the embargo, except a couple of surprises.". We haven't seen everything yet apparently according to them.

I am sure the reviews are being written/video'd right now, same as with previous releases.
And as before, most reviews will be released around "Something O'Clock" and a couple will come out a few hours early (Woops !).
And they may say "Review based on the final pre-release of Android, but not much is expected to change".
It's pretty simple why.
Google imposed the following limitations on videos :
Unboxing video : OK
Quick overview : OK
Device review : NO
The limitations are in place until the 12th November.

It's about the Nexus 6, but I guess Nexus 9 also falls under the same rule.

Skrillex Smart cases!?

https://store.google.com/magazine/skrillex_live_case_magazine
Look nifty to me.. Seems it adds a button on the back with sudo lg3/4 functionality, at the very least, an extra hardware button for use.

Button is a cool idea. Designing them for 6-year-olds, not so much. But then again, judging by the photo they used, I am about as far away from the target market as you can get (thankfully).
I ordered one so well see if its crap or not.

Made for Android
Each Skrillex Live Case is individually numbered and comes with built-in smarts. A customizable shortcut button gives you one-touch access to your favorite stuff. You can set it to launch the phone’s camera, open any of your apps or, of course, go to Skrillex’s site.¹

I dont really understand how that is supposed to work though.
I ordered and received the Space Shield case today. Quality is okay from a case perspective, but the quality of the art on the back is done really well.
The live wallpaper and general setup of the case is done through an app called Live Case that's hosted by Google Marketing in the Play Store (not where the rest of Google's apps are hosted). There doesn't appear to be any other way to get the live wallpaper without it (yet).
I haven't seen the wallpaper during the day, but so far the night mode is pretty neat. The most flexibility you can get out of the button is to have it open an app for you, which I've assigned to a custom App Factory app from Tasker.
I'll probably use it for a few days and then go back to one of my other cases. I'm not a Skrillex fan either, I just thought the idea was cool.
Why doesn't Google actually sell cases that protect your phone? I don't understand that.

Can you post some pics of the phone with the case please?
Can't see it too, Google store in my country does not sell phones
I ordered the "Circuit Bae" case. I will receive it Tuesday. Does anyone have any feedback on the quality if this case? Scratch resistance, slip, grip, etc?
Now I want a live wallpaper of earth.
looks awful
Two images of the Skrillex case I received today.
For some reason I can only post two images per post now.
Here is a night time screenshot. Will post a day time one tomorrow.

Does the app or wallpaper running negatively impact battery? Thanks.

Oh, and can an app be launched with the screen off and the device locked? Or do you have to turn the screen on and unlock it for the app to launch that's assigned to the button?

Yes, a little, but not much at all.
Locked screen launching is a negative.
Device needs to be unlocked.
I will say that it's VERY sensitive to accidental touch. Still messing with it.
