Bought my G2 - G2 General

Bought my G2 at opening. First one at store to purchase . This is the bes t phone I've ever had. LG did an excellent job. The only reason I will have to root is to debloat. This is the smoothest and the ui is beautiful. If you were debating don't. I came from the HTC ONE , which was and is a great phone, but this blows me away. Battery so far kills the ONE, which was my only complaint with it
Sent from my VS980 4G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

So far I've had a similar experience.
I cannot wait for this to get root, that is my only complaint so far.
The double tap to unlock really makes this phone.

It is a nice phone, but the fact we may not see AOSP is making me reconsider it. I like having the most recent version of Android as well as the stock Android UI, much better than any theme out there. Even the notification shade on stock is so much better. Oh well, have 15 days to return it, if anything new and awesome about the Nexus 5 leaks I may return this.

What makes you think we wont see aosp? Yes it has a locked bootloader but someone usually finds a way. Just wondering if I missed something and we will be stuck like the gs4 guys.

There is no "fact" yet, barely anyone has really gotten their hands on it yet to even start attempting to unlock the bootloader.
We won't really have a good idea for a few more weeks probably.

I'm just worried about CM as the Optimus G for ATT doesn't have official CM builds.

I agree and I bet we will, just worried for the reason I said above, the ATT Optimus G doesn't have official CM.

For anyone else that has one (Verizon model here)
Is it weird for me to say that this is the first time I've bought a new Android phone and didn't really care to change the OS at all, other than wanting to de-bloat it?
I ran CM on all my previous phones, and after using this for a day and all the features the stock OS has, I'm perfectly fine with it.
Maybe I'm getting old

Its better than samsung's touchwiz but I cant stick with it, the mms app notifications are much worse and the stock lcd density makes everything HUGE! I'm running 360 right now but some things like camera are funky.

I run Hyperdrive on both the S3 and S4 and that is mostly Touchwiz. I would be happy just to root this one. I don't need CM or the others for this phone.

Can't wait until mine arrives tomorrow

This phone has enough tweaks that if I have to stay stock with it, I'm ok. Had the HTC One and liked Sense 5 but coming from a Gnex I really wanted vast improvement in battery live. Got that now and then some.

I am totally satisfied with this phone. Always having touchwiz in the past, this ui just kills it. Its been allowing time since I have been happy with a stock UI. already rooted and debloated and I'm happy. Only one gripe so far. Google play music is not sending Bluetooth metadata to my car. I can live with that.

Picked it up today, and love it! The UI is so much better than TW, I don't think I'll even throw a custom launcher on it this time.

I'm in the same boat pretty much. CM while the development team is amazing is overrated IMO. I have a Nexus 4 and I like AOSP, but I don't need anything but root so I clean up the stuff I don't want on the G2. Too many test builds too many bugs, I'm over it.

If I could get back the stock Android browser and UI I would be extremely happy, definitely nice as is though.

I just wonder if this is better than the Note 3. It looks like a great device tho. I had the Optimus G Pro but it felt clunky and the camera was not the greatest. But the screen was amazing!

I am easy to please. I never had issues with TW. I ran both cleanrom and bonestock. TW is fine. This UI is fine. Root and all that jazz is icing but really isn't a huge deal. It's all android to me.

Time to scrap the TB?

When the TB first came out it felt very snappy, very smooth and fairly quick. Rooted it and after some time it just seems to have no hope and I dont know why. I have flashed almost every Rom out there and it seems to work fine for a little bit and then within a week it is back to its VERY laggy performance. When the S3 came out, I got that and my wife wanted my TB. She is getting tired of me playing around with the phone and trying to get a performance fix and just wants a new phone. Should I try to unroot it and run it stock for her? Otherwise she may look at the moto razr M or the inc 4g. (not a phone I would have, but its not up to me)
The phone slowing down may be certain apps impacting performance, so you may want to look into that. Also if you haven't already I would ditch sense based roms and give AOSP a try.

The aosp ICS is snappy but a few things don't work. I haven't tried there sense version but heard good things.
The Gnex is a free upgrade btw

In my opinion, sense based roms are slower & have more lag than than others. It is pretty much up to you, or your wife, to let you know what she wants. I was really looking forward to trying out the newest AOSP 4.0.4 ICS by twistedumbrella. Have you tried this yet? I haven't been able to get past the "bootloop" but it seems that some are & some aren't. I believe you'd love the rom if it works on your TB.
Keep in mind all aosp liquid/twisted builds the video recording does not work. Knowing most women camera and camcorder is a must lol.

This is some good advice for the OP. I recall running a deodexed 2.7 or something a while back that would probably work well for the OP. It is sense based but it was very stable and everything works.

If she's looking for something that is smoother with less lag then stock definitely won't bring her that. If you're able, I'd look into getting a newer phone. The Thunderbolt is at its end of life.

Not surprised at all, they will continue to have excuses and when it does come out it will be the only update we shall see. Glad I like the phone for what it is and am not too worried on the jelly bean switchover...I just want a smooth "bugless" phone which for the most part it is.

this is why I sent it back even though I loved the phone. there was no reason why the phone should have been released with ICS in the first place. its a beautiful phone but battery was a no no. plus jelly bean should come. by that time key lime pie will be the new kid on the block in the months to come. and I highly doubt LGOG would ever get that. I was completely spoiled with battery from the note 2

Your loss. Considering how well it runs ICS and how little you actually gain with Jellybean, it's not like the phone is somehow inferior without the update. Let's look at what you get:
1) Project Butter - which will make almost no noticeable difference in the way the phone runs
2) Improved notifications - Good
3) Google Now - excellent
That's it, really. Of those, Google Now is the only "must have" for me and I can wait a few months. The phone runs great as is and has lots of excellent customizations by LG that actually make it a better phone than it would be stock. I'm more concerned that they will introduce bugs or remove features with the JB update than anything.
I'm not sure what your issue was with battery, either. Mine has been great.

His loss indeed. The way this phone runs out of the box beats any other devices stock to stock. Rooted and debloated it's even better. JB isn't the giant leap that some people are making it out to be imo. I have no problem waiting myself. If I wanted it now I'd flash the Korean port.

Exactly! My worry also - that it will mess something up with a JB update. The phone (for me) is perfect as is & I love it & don't want anything to mess it up. I am getting excellent battery life & for me that can't be improved because the battery life is phenominal for me. In short, the LGOG E970 AT&T version is THE phone for me & I love it & don't want anything to change. If JB comes, I will wait anyway before updating just to make sure that there weren't any problems caused by the update.
why does everyone get so touchy when someone says they returned the LGOG. I was just stating my opinion that's all. I don't know what my deal with battery was either. I could actually sit there while using it and watch it drain. even after conditioning. this was with a complete restore as well. sometimes dropping almost 10% in an hour with hardly doing anything with it. amazon didn't have any left in stock at the time of the return so I opted for a refund. not saying not having jelly bean is the reason for returning it. all I am saying is this phone should have shipped with it. there was no reason not too period. it will prob get it. but I wouldn't hold my breath after that. especially after the pro is released. just my 2 cents

Agree 100%.
Sadly, a lot of everyday users probably have no idea Google maps has navigation, and since I don't think it is stock installed on at&t devices, they never see it.
I had to tell my techchallenged aunt not to use any at&t crap on her phone.
6 months later she got an iPhone and a hotspot plan so she could wirelessly teather after her router acted up.
I had to facepalm because I could have gotten her free teathering on her Android phone.
Slightly related, does anybody know if there is an unlimited dataplan with the hotspot plan? She was adamant she had unlimited even though my understanding is 5 gigs is as high as you can go on a single plan.

Not very happy with my s4

After a few days of playing with my S4 I would have to say I'm not very happy with it. My smart stay setting don't work but maybe a 1/4 of the time if that. My voice commands don't work but half the time and I get a bit of lag from time to time. I've always used the stock browser in the past cause of flash player and now that don't work right, along with every now and then not being able to click links like its lagging but yet the url, bookmarks, Window manager, and menu button work. Plus the battery life hasn't been to great but that may be me being used to the note 2 battery. If anyone else is getting the same thing or knows of fixes please let me know. I have had these problems on fully stock, rooted with stock debloated, and now on rooted stock. Should I just wait and see what roms come out or should I try to return it and if I should return it is there a way back to non rooted fully stock? Thank you for your time.
edit 5/30: i just got done formating the int and ext storage to start from scratch. after that i noticed hyperdrive was just released so i installed that. phone softbricked cause i tried to install the ads mod from the app he has on the rom. was getting missing file errors and i/o error when tring to restore/wipe/install anything. did the no-wipe factory image and had to wipe data and factory reset after to get it out of bootloop. now im back and phone seems to be running great (but not sure about the voice commands and smart screen stuff just yet). i think my problem was i didnt change the save folder for titanium backup to sd card and i had some rom backups in the int. storage. figured this out when i went to make a backup and it said not enough memory. so if your having problems with lag double check your int. storage to make sure you have plenty of space.
Sounds like every S 4 I have ever seen.

Glad I brightened things up a bit for you!! Heck I am looking to upgrade soon and am considering the gs4. Been testing the waters in anticipation. I ran one of scotts roms years ago on my Optimus S (moved to the nexus s 4g, to currently the epic 4g touch) and he made a solid rom then, I know that.

the issue with links you cant click is an bug browser freezing up.hopefully they will fix it soon.temp u can clise tge broswer and then fire back up and it should work.
I wonder in Verizon applied the latest update like all the other carruers did that took care of lag etc...I remember something in early may that the other carriers were getting an update to address the lag issue and since our phones were just released last week...it may be a little bit before Verizon catches up.

The Galaxy S3 was the first android phone that I could say finally solved the laggyness that has been there since the droid. I have an iphone 5, S3, and the S4. The S4, at least mine, is clearly faster then my S3, and the even the iphone (which has always been pinnacle of non lag phones)......can't even compare with the S4 smoothness, and that is saying something.
I hate lag, hated it since the OGDroid, and can see immediately. I'm sorry you're having issues with you're S4, but I really don't know what alternative phone you could buy as of now.....because, if i'm not mistaking, the S4,HTC One or Iphone.....are the only phones you can buy with the least amount of lag as of todays date.
Best of luck to you.
Well I need to do some more testing with the voice command. I went outside today (were is bright) and noticed that some of the clear stickers on the side of the phone were still there. Just not to sure if the ones I pulled off was covering the mic. If it's better from here on out I will definitely feel like a de de deee.
edit: still having a little of trouble but it may have to do with background noises and the phone volume being all the way up.
Tks

I kept reading posts about the S4 being laggy, so I was a little worried when I picked mine up yesterday. Luckily, I seem to have a lag free version.
I came from an iPhone 5, and this S4 is much faster. Prior to that I had a gnex, and there is night and day difference between that and the S4.

I'm not happy with it.
It gets way too hot for my liking. Should have realized that an aluminum case will get hotter. That's my own fault.
Any AOSP based rom that's not GPe runs like garbage on mine so I've been running Sense because the GPe rom is just different enough from CM that it drives me crazy.
I don't like how flush the power & volume buttons are with the device. I usually lower & raise the volume with the phone in my pocket. It seems impossible to do that with this phone.
That said, anyone want to buy a rooted HTC One?
I dunno. Maybe I'll just have to get used to it. But the fact that CM/AOSP roms run like crap are almost a deal breaker for me.

I don't like how flush the power & volume buttons are with the device. I usually lower & raise the volume with the phone in my pocket. It seems impossible to do that with this phone.
That said, anyone want to buy a rooted HTC One?
I dunno. Maybe I'll just have to get used to it. But the fact that CM/AOSP roms run like crap are almost a deal breaker for me.

though i've no experience with CM, seeing as the creator of CM uses an HTC One as his daily and i really doubt he's using any other ROM than his own, i can't really see how it would run bad on this phone.

When was that video taken, and what build was being used, what was this person's install procedure. The video has little to no proof of it running this horrible for people. I just got my One today so I'll be rooting and flashing over the weekend. I would put money down that it doesnt run this horrible.

Is it just me or...

are these newer android phones giving more reasons to stay stock? I have found with the G2 that I have no want (or need) right now to root/ROM this phone. Usually when I get a new phone the first thing I do is root it, clear all that carrier crap out, or simply flash CM for that stock android experience; I just have not found that need with the G2.
So, what is the point of this thread?
I want to know everyone's thoughts about this. Are you rooted...are you stock....and why you are or are not?
If you are rooted, I would also like to know what ROM/Kernel/etc you are running.
Thanks!
I am rooted but on stock everything else.
I mainly rooted for Titanium Backup and other root enabled apps like AdBlock and Greenify. Beyond that, stock is sufficient for me.
Stock unrooted. Since greenify is avaliable without root I kinda found no real reason to root. The only thing I really want is the dual window option from LG g flex. Maybe also to try out dorimanx kernel for undervolting and messing around a bit.

The main reason I usually root/rom is for speed and battery life....as we all know the G2 doesnt lack anything in either. I use the greenify beta as well and have noticed a huge difference in my battery life. The only thing tempting me to root is Titanium Backup but I have been fighting it because I'm so damn happy with the phone as it sits.

Link for adblock? Or at least point me in right direction
Root + Flex rom + Custom kernel
Why?
I like stock rom (UI and feature) but flex rom is better (Black UI + more feature)
I'm rooted and stock. Stock rocks. I'm also running g2 xposed. With this you have all the customizations on aosp but on stock Rom

if there was a Flex rom for the Sprint variant, I would probably reconsider. Althoughhhh I am running the LG Flex theme thru LG's theme manager which gives me a somewhat similar look to the Flex.
I like the stock ROM with xposed, but now I'm on AOSP, because micro stuttering on stock started to bug me, even if it was barely noticeable.
thoughts....
Flashing is so played out for me. A new feature gets added and something else breaks and needs to be fixed...repeat.
.....At this point just root and do your own thing(s).
But I have not did anything to this phone, it works just fine.
I'm stuck but rooted with a few xposed modules, adblock and of course the camera mod. Now it's perfect! Never been this happy with a device. I played with AOSP kk and that was fun for awhile. I came from a gnex previously, which I loved despite the shortcomings.

I have 3x VS980s. Two are happy with being 100% stock.
I rooted mine from day1, but stayed with stock-based ROM for a month as I was happy with stockLG (I can satisfy my flashing urges with
my N7) ... Then I decided to explore the latest/greatest of Android on this phone... I would never go back to stock and don't even care when/if LG
would release a stock 4.4.x (OK, maybe we need the new OEM kernel source).
ROM+gapps are normally ~200MB instead of a huge download.
I get to try so many features out .. I can switch to other ROM (or even my Stock) Backups in a few minutes, if my mood changes.
Not that I fully need those features ... just the feeling of doing things freely.
I'm currently staying with Mahdi ... lean, fast, so-many-features, no issues (I had some freezes/reboots on early releases, still no biggies then).
DirtyUnicorns is great too, but may need some little time to smooth out the little bugs
Played around like 3 days with roms, i turned into a flashaholic, flex, non flex, tried so many roms and at the end of this, im on stock rooted now. i bought G2 Xposed (0,70 € - definitely worth!) and now it looks cool, its fast, stable, what else do i need? Darker UI? For what exactly? I actually using apps and not the starving at the settings and think "wow cool, its dark". no need, really. im pretty happy currently with full stock rooted. the next days i will customize my homescreen a bit and then its ready. just wait for 4.4
YOLO
Stock, rooted, debloated, xposed to get rid of GPS and dual wifi/lte notifications.
I'm coming from the HTC Rezound. I usually go for CM, but am very impressed with the LG interface. I have been tempted to try a flex Rom, but am happy having a phone that everything works, and has amazing battery life.

After flashing my Galaxy Nexus several times a week, and sometimes a few times in a day, for two years, I fully expected that I'd be doing the same with the G2. But I've been very pleasantly surprised at the speed, smoothness, features and battery life with stock. Stock has also been incredibly stable for me, No FC's, no lockups.
The stocks apps are much better than I expected -- the functionality has been excellent. I'm keeping an eye on the various sub-forums here for the G2, and may wind up flashing something new, but so far, I don't see anything more appealing than stock, and I'm not ready to give up the stock features. I may wind up with Flex, but I'm also guessing that there will be an update for the G2 sometime in the next 2 or 3 months, and my guess is that it may have some of the extra feature's we're seeing today in the Flex ROM. For now - I'm happy to remain stock, experiment with themes for the stock launcher and simply enjoy this fantastic phone. Still feels weird, as this is the first phone I've had where I'm really happy with stock.
^^Same exact situation for me,I'm loving the g2,just need to get rid of some of the bloat. But something deep inside really wants to start flashing away, but it's just too good as is, I stopped after root and recovery.

I rooted first to get rid of all the status bar icons. Overkill lol I don't need to know NFC or WiFi is on. And with xposed tweaks, its all I need. I have zero interested in an asop ROM. Using flex and love it
