Magnetic Dock - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hi I was wondering if any body has done this but you could do it your self. I bought my magnetic cable on ebay for 9.88+ shipping the magnet was weak to attach it to the phone so I decided to make a dock with my magnetic cable and some hard foam from 99C store

Well done! Seems to be better than the original that doesn't allow any case...

if you look at it has a case but since you'r doing it your self you can make it as you want it/need it

can you share the link of item you purchased "magnetic cable" from ebay ?

first off I bought it on this website [ http://www.netimes.com/shop/magnetic-usb-charging-cable-for-sony-xperia-z-ultra-xl39h-p-4975.html ] not on ebay sorry! and you'll see the green sticker. well that is covering the sony logo. just to let you know

Also note that the official dock is literally just a hunk of plastic with the standard cable captured inside. Really, if you need a spare cable you can remove the bottom and lift the cable out whole.

Great!!!! I have been looking for this before

Anyone found a cheaper source for the magnetic power cable? ~$10 for a cable is pretty expensive.

[VIDEO] HTC One Max - Wireless Charging - QI Standard

Well one of the things I missed the most after getting the HTC One Max was wireless charging. It'd be nice to have a case that made use of the Pogo pins or something else, but this will have to do for now. If someone knows of a better solution, please comment below.
Total cost was $16 for the a TPU case and wireless charging receiver pad with MicroUSB cable.
htc have a case that has a battery in built. it uses the pogo pins. certainly you are aware of this case?
That has a built in battery, not wireless charging or am I looking at the wrong one?

The WCP 700 by LG is one of my favorites since the pad is so big. I did remove the speaker from it cause the fully charged notice is annoying.
I wouldn't get the angled Google Orb all WCP 400. It's harder to find the right spot especially with a larger device.
The Nokia DT-900 can usually be found for a good price online. It isn't bad. Just don't get the vertical stand which is the DT-910.
Oh and the LG WCP-300 is affordable too.
If you want to pick these up locally and you might find the WCP-700 and 300 at Verizon. The Nokia DT-900 is probably at AT&T.

Haven't run it down all the way much, but the charge rate is about half the USB cable. I'll post some charts I've collected in the next few days.

You know anywhere you can currently find one of these?
The link is sold out already and the other KR-Net QI receiver pads posted on amazon/ebay all have the cable coming out the opposite side of the connector (the usb cable would be coming up to the screen instead of behind the phone, once its plugged in).
I would like to combine this with my power flip case. A prong solution wouldn't be good for people already using a case that takes advantage of the prongs.
In general they are universal solutions. Here is a link to one:
http://goo.gl/pqG2du
Type B
I picked this one because the cord is shorter. As an update to the OP, the receiver finally gave out from changing cases quite a few times. The cord was so long that it had to be stuffed under the case.
Let us know how it works out when you get to try it.
Does anyone happen to know the pinout for the pogo pins on this phone? I just got one through work, and need to use usb connection frequently enough that I don't trust the connector on these. However, I have a dual layer Incipio case, and think it would be fairly easy to put the coil on the outside of the rubber portion, but under the plastic outer cover. Then use the pogo pins for the charging connection.

Sony Charging Dock

Looks like Sony once again bring out a charging dock tailored for the new flag ship named DK36
http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/products/accessories/magnetic-charging-dock-dk36/
I wonder if we removed the cable from the DK31 dock it will fit the magnetic ports on the Z2?
This is the first design flaw I've spotted with the Z2. The dock actually blocks a little part of the screen. The dock makes it a very good mini television and this kind of ruins it. Hope this isn't the case and this isn't the final product.
I emailed Sony about the dock, they say that the z1 dock will not work on the z2. I assume they mean that the pins won't align

It seems the thickness of two phone is different that why the z1 dock will not work on the z2.
I found some magnetic chargers sold on line are compatible with Z1, Z1C and Z2.

I don't see that problem at all. Right now, My Z2 is sitting in the charging dock and the lip is a fraction below the margin of the bezel leaving the entire screen visable.

Generic Dock from Amazon
I bought this generic one from Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00JE81AJE
Works perfectly and even has a different width receiver for when you fit a case on to the Z2 and it's half the price. Recommended :good:
I've sent mine back to Amazon, the dock charger only works when plugged into the wall socket, it doesn't charge the phone (or provide any connection whatsoever) when plugged into a USB port. Maybe it's obvious for everyone else, but it wasn't for me.
Also, this 30 euro accessory is just a small piece of plastic, you don't even get a USB cable in the package. Sony is charging way too much for this.
I'm now hoping for a third-party dock that will be able to connect and charge via USB.
I can't use either of my cases with the dock. So had to order the official Sony case (through I hate cases like that). Gutted that I can't use a thin gel case on it, in the dock!

Does the SCR10 case fit the dock? I know it should because they are both officially from Sony, but it seems a bit weird to fit it.
I have the SCR10 and wondering to buy the DK36, but I don't want it if I have to take of the cover.

Yup. It does fit without problems.
Are there any 3rd party cases that fit? I really hate cases like the official Sony one, but have ordered it purely to protect the device, even though I hate the style. Every gel case I have purchased from eBay or Amazon does not fit...

This is exactly the same with the dock from the Xperia Z - completely overpriced and they don't advertise that it must use a high-current charger, 500mA from a USB port won't work.
At least they should include a power adapter + cable. The dock has to contain about $1 worth of materials, if even that.

Thought it would be nice to post here as well. Not sure if you're aware of this: Anyone thinking about cases and the dock, it has a removable part that, when removed, lets you insert the phone with many kinds of cases.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-DK36-Charging-Dock-Smartphone/dp/B00HWUQEZQ/ref=pd_cp_computers_0
Here you can see the "seamline" which is the removable part. It is also stated in the description. Just to let you know in case you didn't already.

I can assure you it does not go into the dock if you wanted that. And there are full length cables that do the same thing (at least I think the magnetic charging cables fit with a case), saves the hassle of an adapter. If you can justify getting it, then nice find mate.

alternative charging dock for tablet Z? (cheaper)

Does anyone know if there exists an alternative dock than the official Tablet Z charging dock?
50€ for a bunch of plastic + 2 pogo pins is too expensive for me (but necessary to maintain the waterproofness)
PS: The magnetic charging cable for my wife's Z1 compact don't stick and the holes don't fit that's too bad...
edit: other than the Argos one that is "Currently out of stock for home delivery to:NN35HG"

Building my own dock
Has anyone else built their own dock?
I found some hobby wood at Hobby Lobby that might be useful for building a dock.
1. 1/8 x 6 x 12 plywood $1.79
2. 1/2" x 1/2" x 24" $2.29
For the part that connects to the charging pins, I am using a piece of Lego. I used some tracing paper to trace out the charging contacts, taped it to the Lego, and will drill two holes there for the pogo pins.
Here is the Lego next to the tablet.
I bought the pogo pins from eBay. $3.95 for 10 pins.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/151107295495?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
The pogo pins are 1mm diameter. To drill the proper hole, I needed a 1mm drill bit. I bought this one. $0.91 for 10 bits.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/181130308398?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
I need to wait for the drill bits to get here from China, so I will update this post later. Just hoping to get some feedback on what other people are doing, things I am doing wrong, etc.
I have spent $8.94 total so far.
Many thanks for any feedback, suggestions, etc.
It was impossible to solder the USB cable to these 1mm pogo pins. The hollow center of the pin is too small to get even a few strands of the wire into it and one strand probably isn't enough.
I found 3.2mm pogo pins on eBay and will try again in a few weeks when they get here. (The seller is in China so it takes a while).
http://www.ebay.com/itm/371139602907
these 2 pins cost $4.89 so my total spend has reached $13.83.
The larger pogo pins came in today. Here is what they look like.
Here is the finished dock.
Close-up
Two more pictures
I am using the following to stand up the charger. $14.99 at Sears but they give you the money back in Sears money so it is basically free.
http://slickdeals.net/f/7200532-wow-aluminum-tripod-stand-for-tablets-15-sywr-14-99-sears
I ended up resoldering the connections and tying the cable down to make it stronger.
I spent a grand total of $13.83, but I could have done it for $8.97.
1. 1/8 x 6 x 12 plywood $1.79
2. 1/2" x 1/2" x 24" $2.29
3. $3.95 for 10x 1mm pogo pins. (NOT USED)
4. $0.91 for 10x 1mm drill bits. (NOT USED)
5. 2x 3.2mm pogo pins cost $4.89
6. Wood glue and a few screws (free)
7. Old iPhone USB cable (free)
Nice. Maybe add some black paint and it woukd be cherry. Thanks for the pics!

Idea for Qi Charging Case

The magnetic charging docks are not bad. Also, the qi charging case from Sony is pretty nice. However, the best case would be a plastic case with a Qi wireless coil inside with a lead that wraps around and fits over the magnetic contact. Qi chargers like the Tylt work really well and they are so handy at home and in the car. I wear a holster so the flip cover is not necessary.

I know, that's why I asked if maybe there are some prototype floating around
I did not mean to infer that I had one of the Sony Qi charging cases. I may have purchased one had they been available. I prefer the a slim fitting tpu or hybrid case. However, none that I have found fit correctly. Sony's magnetic charging docks are great and work fast, but one has to remove his case to use them. Yet no one makes a good case that covers up the SIM/Micro USB cover and exposes the magnetic charging area. This is totally stupid. One only seldomly changes his SIM and needs access to the micro usb port, but one always needs to charge.
If Sony is not going to add a Qi charger in the phone, they should at least make some good folio and slim fit cases at a sub $50 price that can be left on while charging using the magnetic dock.
Also, charging with a car dock is a pain without Qi charging using the Z2. The buttons are all in the wrong place also and interfere with the sides of both my car docks.
It's a real shame that Sony has not made a better attempt at charging options combined with cases. The Sony Z2 is a great phone. Even better yet woukd be a removeable battery. This is the only feature that keeps me going back to Samsung.

I have been thinking about trying this. I have dismantled a magnetic charger and there are only 2 wires in there. Positive and negative. Is there anything stopping me buying a universal micro usb qi adapter and soldering the positive and negative from that onto the positive and negative of the magnetic charger and hiding it all inside a case?
That's an interesting Idea. I've thought of the same thing, though I wanted to connect to the magnetic charger contact rather than the micro USB port. I'd like to make a case with a Qi charger and FM radio antenna built in. It wouldn't take up that much space.
I hope someone at Sony is watching this thread.
Sent from my D6503 using XDA Free mobile app
I for one actually feel a bit cheated.
The did announce Qi charging capability through a case and plate and while I had to choose between the S5/M8/Z2, this was one of the element that I considered...
Now all of a sudden they decide to cancel...
Though I would much prefer a Qi charger, the magnetic chargers can be useful. I bought some cheap magnetic charging cables and cut some of the plastic off them so they would work with my phone's case on. The magnets are weak and it s a pain to get them attached but of charges quite fast.
I was hoping that the Z3 would come out of the gate with wireless charging. In a statement made a few months back, they stated they would have Qi charging by the end of this year.
Hopefully the Z4 will have it. They also need to put 32 GB of internal storage in their phones.
Sent from my D6503 using XDA Free mobile app
If someone made a QI charging case, I'd be willing to pay for it, as long as it looked good enough!
might be worth testing out to see if the WCR14 connector and charging type works on a Z2. i can see the connector alone makes the phone look much bigger.
Why sony decided to put a magnetic charge on the side is beyond me.
Did anybody get any where with this? I am thinking about getting one of the coils on ebay for the samsungs and modifying it, they look very slimline as I suppose they are design to fit behind the battery cover?
I am planning to have it sit inside a TPU case I have. The difficult part will be the magnetic part / Soldering....etc

Z3 adapter for magnetic charging dock dk39

How long will it take till someone starts selling this simple plastic piece on ebay? I have a z2 tablet with charging dock dk39 and I don't want to buy dk48. Some updates from the dk-48 I bought from ebay. It comes with 34A, 34B (most width), 45A (least width) and 45B.
I use 34B with casing and 45A without casing.
Guys I figured out a way to make the DK39 work for the Z3: just take the included adapter, flip it upside down and lay it over the back and top of the slot. The connection isn't perfect but it is stable enough to get a charge for the Z3.
Just got my dk48 today. Has anyone done any charge tests to see how long it takes to charge using that than the usual plug in charger?
