LG G2 community contribution - G2 General

Discussion: "Is the device will be supported by the community?"
Hello,
Just to introduce: Android security researcher, Android developer and some things that are irrelevant for us
I am willing to buy new LG G2 , this is no question but a discussion.
The main reason why I have misgivings is : "Is there will be a community to develop with?"
I came from samsung smartphones as S2 and S4, those are known with a variety of community support for roms and other forms of open-source development. Is the G2 will be the same? this question is coming with every new smartphone.
Just to clarify, "Supported by the community" - roms, kernerls and so on.
In my opinion, smartphone is not only hardware or software but the community with it, specially in Android.
Is the G2 will be supported by the community?
What do you think?

This phone has bleeding edge internals. It will be a beast for a long time to come. Even when new flagship devices come out. Everyone who has one loves it. Battery life is great. Processor is pretty great. Screen is incredible. Camera is incredible. Everything about it will match any release for at least the Next 6-9 months. It got root and a debloated stock ROM in it's first week. I can pretty much guarantee it will continue to get support. I'd bet on it.

Support is pretty impressive for the time its been out. Once the N5 drops we'll see about aosp builds.

Given LG's sales figures - I see a lot of support in the near future. Pretty much every top device in the last year has had AOSP-based ROMs and a bit of development. (Given the bootloader is easy to get around.)

I think community strength will come by buying the phone early. And protecting from OTA. If people wait around they may stay shopping them patched against Loki. Its not a wise move to tarry.

Much support for the Thunderbolt

Why is there so much development for the Thunderbolt compared to other phones like the Droid Charge?
Hardware wise the bolt is better would be my guess, plus its just a nice device.
Bamfin' my bolt
its been out longer, its from htc so you can port newer sense versions, its a lot cheaper than many of the newer smart phones, at stock it doesn't utilize its full potential so there was lots of room for improvement, and it has a KICKSTAND!
There's a lot of long term hate in the development base of xda against samsung because:
1) Driver issues in the phones (gps, etc)
2) They have a history of being slow to update and release the GPLed kernel sources as well as the android version updates (though they now admit they were and are promising to do better). No sources = no modding
3) Many people do not like touchwiz or modding it.
4) A lot of people consider the charge an inferior phone (even compared to other samsung android phones).
It's unlocked.
As a former Galaxy S owner, I say "Eff Samsung!'
never again. HTC only for me.
I originally was going to buy the Sensation on TMobile, but bought the Tbolt due to LTE, better price, no rebates, plus TMo wouldn't work with me on fulfilling their promotions.

[Q] GSIII or Nexus 4? (T-mobile US)

Hello, honestly I do not know where to post this since it speaks about multiple phones. So I came here to post this.
If this is not the right place to have this then please mods/admins move this to where it needs to be! Thank you in advance.
ALRIGHT
So, for the past while now I have been looking for a replacement phone for my G2 (which sadly now has a broken screen, I have been using screencast to operate the phone for weeks now. However I can still answer the phone normally when called without the need for a computer system thanks to easy memory.)
Since my upgrade is already available I do not know if I should try to get the GSIII or the LG Nexus 4 (god willing if it actually comes to T-Mobile). I want a phone that will last the time needed for me between now and my next upgrade in 2 years. (I am not fortunate enough to buy off contract, if I did this would be entirely irrelevant.) While the GSIII offers the popular end and will probably get the best AOSP for a damn good long time, I also find a great appeal over the LG Nexus 4 being able to get stock updates on the fly upon release, while I would still consider AOSP for the Nexus 4 because of the added options as well.
Basically it comes down between the two and what is the best choice when it comes right down to quality + support + longevity over the next 2 years. I know a lot can happen within that timeframe, but I do not want to be forgotten so soon like I was with the G2. Plus I want to be able to have an absolutely wonderful experience with customization with little limitations.
I know its foolish to consider the Nexus 4 considering that its not officially out yet nor do we know it will be offered by T-Mobile US. I also know that even with a top of the line phone there will always be something better around the corner that will topple mine. Finally I know that the focus of the AOSP community will shift on to other projects while whichever one I choose now will not remain the prime focus forever.
I just want a phone that will get me as far as I can between my 2 year cycle. Growing with a "pure" experience with the G2, soon followed by AOSP and after that AOKP. I want to be able to get the same (or hopefully, MUCH BETTER) experience out of that, I have no problem rooting (hell I remember the days when the G2 was damn near "impossible" to root) and if anything I would probably end up rooting my phone as soon as I get it in my hands.
The only limitations right now between these two and me is my patience, and the luck that the Nx4 will come out on T-Mobile. Again, with my current situation with my G2 I do not have much time left to decide. I have been waiting long enough and with most of the information we have on both of these devices that I am looking at I think it can be time to consider which one I rather get.
Please, help me decide which one I should get next! The GSIII or the LG Nexus 4?
Wrong section.

The nexus 4 will most likely launch in November and based on the leaks and rumors (Low memory, no LTE, 8mp camera and such) it will not be subsided by a carrier. The nexus 4 will probably only be available via the play store and will be a relatively low price (roughly $400-450) for an off contract device.
Anyways, back to the device selection. I would say s3 is your best bet, but we wont know officially until the nexus 4 reveal on the 29th.

HTC on Verizon

If they release this in the Nexus variant I found my next device. First phone besides the S4 to catch my attention all year. Hoping Motorola makes an announcement soon so I can really weigh my options.

Oh yea!! Awesome!! I have $400 saved up on amazon specifically for this phone ha
That thing doesn't have an SD card right?
So my decision kinda goes down to front facing speakers, or an SD card.
Let the Exodus begin! I am so stoked about this. I have an upgrade available in August, but I will pay full price and save my unlimited data. Wahoo!

Nice, if they do a Verizon version, should be plenty of AOSP to pick from I'd hope
So I guess this won't be a true Google nexus phone but just a phone to run aosp? It is nice they are looking in to the option of giving owners a choice of os. Might be the first steps in allowing us to flash what we want in the future. Might get this phone when released.
My question is why is it Google owns moto but they still haven't released a nexus phone?

Here is how I am looking at the Nexus program. I think that people are starting to buy Nexus phones like the Iphone. A single experience across a single platform. Jelly Bean finally made Android beautiful to look at and use and now people are catching on. Samsung was part of the Nexus experience for a long time, and they made a decent market out of it. With this in mind people are seeing the Nexus verisons advertised and the skins OEM use are cartoony, bulky, and don't carry 1 or 2 of Androids core features well after release. With the Nexus program more OEM's are seeing profitability probability from having these stock phones. It also will help them develop a more precise skin in using stock they will see what people like and build features off it while maintaining stock characteristics. Skins can be good Sense started off on the right foot, but has gotten farther and farther away from adding any new functions (Cough) Iphone (Cough) it used to be the best clock, weather, and calendar but as of JB stock is just as good and with Google unifying to the Card UI its feels so consistent across the phone, and skins just subtract from that when they aren't offering anything else that isn't better than or as good as stock.
Now for us, this is great news for the dev community if it means that the Nexus Updates are indeed coming from google. As we have come to terms with HTC just doesn't release source timely and with that in mind slows us down considerably. Now if Google is handling the updates they don't need to listen to HTC they can just post the source for the Nexus variant and we can build off that (not me I mean you) . This in theory should make getting AOSP roms built much faster and much stabler overall. because Even though our devs are great and our community is great JB will never exactly be 100% there. With this though we should see quicker builds, more stable builds, and increased longevity of our device.
I am excited, this looks good for us, and HTC. I know many of us came from the DINC and we all basically had the same idea about the Rez. I love this phone, but during the time I have had it HTC just seemed to be getting worse(along with verizon) but as of late I have been impressed. They seem to be really trying and the one is a combo of great design and great hardware as they always do. So I think this may be enough to keep my HTC loyalty from straying to a galaxy far far away.
Google never had to listen to the phone makers. The problem they had was with Verizon when they told Google CDMA was closed sourced and all updates had to go through them first. Anyone who owns a Verizon galaxy nexus knows how slow updates came when compared to their gsm counterpart. Any Google phone has nothing to do with the makers of the phone when it comes to the software.
Don't even try to compare the nexus line with the iPhone. Most people buys a nexus phone because you can root and customize the phone to their liking. Also to have updates to come quickly. People buys I phones for the name and that's it. Don't compare apples to oranges.
Sent from my Infected Rezound using Tapatalk 2
Only so many users are looking to root the average end user is not looking for hacking capabilities. They are looking for an experience that is taken care of for them. Thats what the Iphone used to be, and that's what Android with Jelly Bean has become. People are moving to android for more reasons than hacking. They may be two different OS's, and two different Manufacturers but Google's nexus line is becoming mainstream now. There is no denying that. I know tons of people with Iphones that have bought a nexus 7 and really "enjoyed the interface" meaning Android is now as and more polished than the previous smartphone overlords at apple. Android is becoming a more powerful OS on its own premise than manufacturers and OEM skins.
Thats just my take though

[Q] Expected Dev support?

Hi guys!
First of all let me give you a brief backstory;
I've owned a SGS3 for the better part of the year and although quite satisfied with the performance of the device, could never get over the physical home button and lack of a dedicated recent apps key (AOSP wasnt an option since there was no official support from Sammy; camera/audio/battery life wasnt as good)
I recently purchased a Vaio S15 and I'm really digging the design language that Sony is implementing onto all their devices, and it seems that Sony's finally stepping up their game in the hardware department. I held off getting an Xperia Z since I felt I wouldnt be as satisfied with the screen coming from an AMOLED.
Now the XZU seems to be a real contender for my cash and I love the aesthetic, and dont mind the sheer size of it. Considering the SOD issues and somewhat inconsistent black levels on multiple devices I can say that my only reservation would be good dev support.
Do you guys expect the XZU to be well supported the dev community?

Great device, only unlocked my bootloader this week, rooted and had CM10.1 up and running, you wont be disappointed, these small software bugs are nothing more and im sure will be iorned out, if not by Sony, by our devs. It feels a million dollars over other plasticky phone, Samsung, no names mentioned.
There are a few devs who've announced roms are underway including pacman and paranoid I believe. Some roms on z1 are gonna be porting to us too. Think that's the thing, this phone is gonna be small market I reckon, but as it's the same hardware as the z1 we'll get most of those roms ported as well as the ones our own devs create.

Yup. Remember when the Note was released? Crickets, crickets everywhere. The activity was very low, and then out of nowhere, it just exploded. It may be a little quiet here now, but i bet it'll get better when people have had the chance to get the Ultra and get to know it a little. Patience is the word here, patience.
i guess flashaholics dont have patience .

Yeah it's too bad about the alpha but it seems right now people want 5 inch screens so it loses out on that. I would recommend the S5 or HTC one m8, both have great dev support. But the best idea is to wait for spring/summer when the S6 and the new HTC is released

Since quite a lots of android users switched-to/switched-back Iphone now because of 4.7"/5.5" Iphone launched. You really don't expect any android discussion board will be as busy as in the old age, the time has gone. Another major reason is nowadays people slowly upgrade their smartphone because hardware is started to mature. When you look on XDA, you will know many new phones development board isn't that active now.
I'm now with Z1 Compact and also thinking to upgrade to Z3 Compact or Alpha or S6(if it manage to smaller than S5 in size a bit) in around March/April. I think mostly I will pick Z3c or Alpha because I believe S6 would be too expensive to me and excess my budget but I will put an eye on it. Z4/Z4c/Z4U is almost sure to hit a big delay now, they will all announce only on May/June sometimes. So, I decided to don't wait them now.
If you like Alpha, just go get it. It is a rare Samsung phone though almost no development here but the phone itself is very capable without any support. If you want a little bit bigger community and need a microSD slot, then pick Z3c.

Switching to Iphone from more matured system? Iphone was good and impressive like 3 generations ago when android wasn't so matured system, nowdays I don't see a reason for people who own for example a S4 to switch to Iphone.
The latter part is very true, a 100€ phone can handle basically anything that basic user throws at it. And the devs and other people who can get more out of their current older phones trough custom roms, don't really have reasons for upgrade.

You gonna search more information. Iphone market share worldwide is same with Samsung in 2014 Q4 and already excess Samsung now in 2015 Q1 so Apple is the No.1 smartphone company again now.
System-wise is always Android better but since Iphone borrowed more and more functions from Android in every generation OS, the gap in different will just become smaller in long run. But on the other hand, Iphone still owns the most best apps and even both platform got the same one, IOS one usually performs better.

Only G3 or S5 or M8 have active development I can name(Z3/Z3c isn't active coz most people still using Z1/Z1c/Z2) but M8 camera is really suck I don't suggest it. And you don't like plastic samsung so no S5 I think, only G3 leave.
S6 will use Exynos and no S810, this time S6 development should not be very active as well because Exynos is harder to support. G4 will also hit a big delay becoz GFlex2 will out first on March/April, G4 won't appear until May/June much like Z4.
I feel bad right now cus im hoping to see alot of roms for this great device but i guese i was wrong.Im not upset or anything but this is why we buy android phones instead of iphone we need to change to somthing new
