[Q] Should I Buy Xperia Z ultra - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Refer to the title , is xperia z ultra is a good phone or should i go for another phone...???

I own it, so it's hard to be objective, so:
The Ultra is an absolutely fantastic device, and i love it. The only thing you should ask yourself is: "Do i want or need a big device?". The size is the only detail that you should be 100% sure of. The screen is fantastic, battery is very good, performance is as you should expect - top notch. Build quality is A+. It's the perfect device for nerds, but this is not the device for most people. It's a niche device that's doing everything right.
Check it out in a store if you have the chance, and if its size doesn't scare you; get it.

Well...LordManhattan said it all. One more thing I can add to this is:
Do you love when people stare at you and perhaps comes up to you and start talking? Because they will! ..this phone is like a big fat magnet

Short answer is yes...
Long answer is yes get it now...

Missing the battery life? Have you read the battery thread? I, and everybody else are constantly getting 5+ hours of screen time and 20+ hours uptime on every charge.

Yeah like Lord says.
-I get pretty good battery life. I use my device constantly. 10 hours with massive usage.
I did a test and got just on 6 hours with a 6Gb, 1080p movie loop. (brightness at max. all hardware on)
-flash isn't a major factor. Looking back to my Galaxy S4, I only took 6-10 images with my S4 at night, and ended up deleting those images as they were pretty average. So I have yet to see a smartphone take good night images.
I thought the lack of a flash would be a killer for me... but actually I don't miss it.
** On another note... make sure that you don't get 'soap' or 'salt' on your speaker or mic. It will eat away that semi-permeable membrane, allowing water to get in, which will then wreck your device. **

Ive been looking into the CPU frequency uptime... and there are some numbers that don't add up.
300

2150
These are the only Mhz values I have achieved. Now I do think its important to utalise that 2.2ghz processor, however it uses this value the most. 30% of the time I'm using 2150 mhz (obviously unless its asleep) This will be a major factor of battery drain. Now unless someone can create a custom kernel that will address this, we wont see any better battery life improvement in ROM's, and this may be at the expense of the smoothness of this device... tough call!

Root it, get a cpu manager and change the max freq to anything lower...
I plan to install antutu cpu master on my (yet to be mine) XZU and set a profile so that its max freq when screen off is around 300..
I was able to hit 4days uptime on an old xperia x10 with normal use just by doing that..
Hope it will behave the same on this unit..

Yeah under 2 hours charges it. (AC)
Takes about 4/5 hours with USB... but we all know why.
Yes I did use setCPU, and betterbattery stats to monitor any wakelocks. No wakelocks, runs well. And setCPU does enable a lower peak frequency. However it also creates a bit of lag, so there's that.
2200 mhz isn't achievable. (without overclock) Would have been cool if Sony went for the 2.3Ghz/ more expensive processor... but 100mhz isn't a big deal i guess

Just be careful and check if the Samsung charger has the same output as the Sony charger. Most if not all chargers today are 5 Volts, so you should be safe, but just check it just in case so you don't damage your battery.

If you use SystemTuner Pro mate check the cpu of each core... Or use perfmon free. You will see that while it may be running at 2150 its probably only using 1 core of the 4 available most of the time. I'm guessing this is more power efficient when running a single core at a higher clock speed than firing up multiple cores.
It also seems to be using some form of touch boost, so just touching the screen will automatically make it boost cpu and gpu frequency. Honestly most of the time mine seems to be siping along on a single core about 300-600mhz

Here's my take on the phone. Overall I'll give it a 6/10. The screen does not keep up to the hype. It has a very clear yellow tint. I'm in fact using a filter to adjust the white balance.
Next, the in ear speaker is average. Has a hollow sound.
The speaker at the bottom is a absolutely terrible. Almost unusable.

Battery drain+Heat=Wifi+Stock Browser, please read

Hello again dear xda members
I've been using S II for over 2 weeks now! I get the following(which many of you do get also). When I turn on WiFi and start surfing, the phone starts to overheat and battery is drained like a juice.
Well, after a long study, I've found out that it's the stock browser's fault!
Yeah! I opened WiFi, surfed a little and it started to heat up! Well, I was trying to download something, and since stock sucks at downloading( except if you add to it an app from the market called Downloadfiles) I opened DolphinHD!!
What I saw, or felt-whatever-, was just
After 5 minutes, the phone cooled down, temperature became normal and of course battery was less consumed!
So, to all people who have heat issues, it turns out(at least in my humble opinion) that it's the stock browser's fault!!!
Any thoughts anyone? Similar experiences?
I've been using it for 10 days and experienced no such overheating, but battery time should be much better.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Really? It doesn't overheat never? even not when playing games?
I thought mine was faulty, but I went to couple of stores where they have it open for customers to play with, and I did the same as mine and it started to heat up!
Mine heats up a bit after playing a game or running a certain app for a while, but I never experience overheating with the stock browser. Though you should take in to consideration that the GS2 is a thin device, the CPU is close to your hands. Most phones also have to exessivly keep searching for connections because it is weak or something is blocking its way. The transmitting/receiving device is located at the top along with the CPU so it'll tend to get hot. Most smartphones do overall.
Also, the phone gets hotter while using it connected to a charger just because the battery is filling up the same time you are using it. Also, take in to consideration that no patch for true dualcore support has yet been released nor announced. Just some factors why the phone heats up.
thanks man!
Well, heating up is normal-as far as I read in here-... But when using Stock Browser, I'm talking about overheat! really! I believe it's a bug, since as said, nor Firefox, Dolphin and Skyfire(I use all of them) produce that issue! And I disabled flash content(thought that might make it better) but it was the same! Don't know!
Anyways, thanks for answering!
OVer wifi I have no problems. Over 3G is another story! and playing games is another story. It warms up every 5 minutes while playing games.
Yours too huh? well, mine does that on WiFi!
What is Overheating? How do you know it is overheating unless you know the temperature of the battery? Well OP and other posters who are saying the phone gets overheated please mention the temperature of it. The ambient temp of Europe/USA is 20-25°C Max, and if the device runs even cool then it will have temp around 30-32°C, that is much higher than the ambient temp and probably that's why you guys are feeling the phone is overheating but in fact it's not. Here in Calcutta, ambient is 32-33°C and the Phone temp in normal is the same, so we/I don't feel it's overheating, only when I surf net for an hour straight with charging then the temp rises up to 44-45°C, that's when it could be said that the phone is running on high temp, still for the hardware we are given 45°C is not hot.
So before saying the phone is overheating please check the battery temp.
Regards.
how do I measure battery temperature?
Ok, Battery life widget?
I'll measure then I'll let you know!
There is a reason stock browser uses more battery and heats more. It uses GPU to render pages more quickly! But for me even on stock it is not that hot, more than on other phones, but thats what you get for a thin phone.
Maybe somone will test battery life with stock+GPU and dolphin browser with no GPU. Maybe the difference is not that big at all, maybe just GPU heats more than CPU but uses same battery.
now let's not forget android doesn't have graphics acceleration, and without it the GPU has to work harder which generates more heat

Summer in Greece and sub-30-degrees Celsius don't go together. That's why we're hot!
Anyway,****ty joking aside, inside a bus today, under the sun with an ambient temperature of about 35-36 degrees(dunno how you put the degrees symbol pal ) and with my GPU overclocked at 400MHz with 1100mV using tegrak overclock ultimate,I played some Angry Birds and, although the phone reported no more than 44 degrees,it was very hot at the top.
My opinion? If you(or me obviously) manage to somehow burn/fry something, make sure to do it so bad that it doesn't even respond to Chuck Norris' roundhouse kick! That way maybe Sammy won't notice...Shush!

49 *is* pretty damn hot. Anything over 40 and I start to worry a bit, which does happen occasionally with some kernel betas, especially early on after that initial flash/till you do a couple of charge/discharge/reboot cycles. Running a kernel script before you flash the kernel tends to make this less of a problem I've found.
I'm running an early (stable) version of Siyah and I find the average temp of the device with light/no use is 23-25, moderate use is 25-27, 27-31 with heavy use (all dependant on ambient temp), and it sometimes gets up to 36-37 when charging, more so when the battery has less charge (say less than 40% or so). The temperature gradually drops as the battery charges & returns to "normal".
Without knowing what your setup is (i.e kernel, rom, etc), its hard to say what might be causing this.
But as far as I'm concerned, 49 is *not* normal.

Do not use Hyperion, QCell or any other cheap ebay/amazon batteries. They are only about 1700mah at best and will kill your phone under moderate use in about 60 to 90 minutes. Maybe less.
I'm on stock GB rooted with all bloat frozen via TB and I can get through a whole day of use on one Samsung OEM batt with light to med usage.

This is no where near the average!
And you seriously must not use your phone, like at all
17 hours at 73% is a bit extreme, but so is 2% per minute drain.
I think I can represent a fairly average user. I usually check email, weather and a little reddit during my morning routine. BT is always on and connects to my car while I drive to work for about 30 minutes. I average about 2 or 3 long phone calls a day on my phone. Some text messaging throughout the day and some short internet sessions on my phone while at work. Plus a few minutes here or there for Draw Something. I stream Google Music every day on my way home for about 30 minutes. Once at home my usage varies depending on what I do for the evening. But so far I usually find I have about 50% battery life when going to bed. I actually made it through Friday and Saturday on a single charge.
So I would say that this phone has above average battery life for an android device. It isn't stellar, but it isn't bad either. My Infuse could eek out about the same life with less use. My N1 never made it even close to this length. My buddy's MyTouch 4g can't usually make it a full 24 hours.

Considering the screen size, the battery isn't actually that big. It sounds enormous due to other phones with almost a thousand less mAH, but I just bought a bunch of extra batteries. The removable battery feature is the biggest reason I switched to Android.
LTE is a HUGE battery killer. I turned off wireless since LTE is SOOOOOO much faster than any wireless connection I'm on. I'd be lucky if I could get through a workday without it being below 50% by the end of a work day and completely dead by 7pm.
Turn on wireless and it's now almost 3pm and still have 78% left.
Lets face one fact everyone is different. .everyone claims this and that and regardless of what carrier or what device people will.never see the batt life they would really.like to see.Say like 50% after 3 days heavy usage that would be a thing we.may see in.smartphones in a few years. Android o.s will always be battery harsh. Its a huge topic.
Another point.on all the claims of Great and terrible batt life has to do with the fact. .people just dont truly get how others may use there devices so heavily..streaming vid...music...downloads...mail sync...Some maybe few truly use there phones 24 hrs non stop. There probably will never be a batt drain solution for those people. So telling one person that batt is fine with all this moderate usage coming from a person who uses there data more like "lightly" rather than heavy, doesnt help a person who is a heavy heavy data user.Neither sides will ever come to an agreement.

Wow that is awesome! I'm getting home with a full days use at around 50-60%- It seems to be better than my captivate was on life that's for sure.
I have had mine for two weeks- On side note? hehehe Does cycling a battery really prove to get better life as time goes by or is it a old school story about batteries use to have memory etc... and now they don't?
Modern batteries don't have memory but their battery meters can become decalibrated which can be fixed with a full change cycle. Nonetheless, I don't recommend doing that too often (I only do it like once a year) since that's bad for the battery.

Your phone comes with built in protection to throtle down the CPU when it gets too hot in order to avoid frying it. With that mod what you did was to tell the phone to forget about throtling down and to simply run as fast as it needs to no matter the temp. This makes it a lot harder for the phone to cool down on its own (since the CPU is still producing a lot of heat) and I guess I don't have to tell you how bad heat can be for electronics...

I feel sorry for all the Sprint employees and LG for the users that blindly turn off thermal throttling, having no clue what it does, and then blame the phone for being defective.
Recently some of my games for updated and now running a lot cooler. I think most game still ramped up the gpu way too high than why needed to run the game smoothly.

Even when I punish this phone it just gets slower, never really hot at all. I used to be afraid of burning my hands on my SGS II, but this never gets hot enough for me to worry at all.
So if my G2's cpu gets to 70 degrees and battery about 43 degrees in 10 minutes of playing gtasa, is that bad enough for service?

You know my phone got really hot with my 3 to old playing Angry Birds Go the other day and I was pretty sure this had something to do with it. The only thing is that the way this is worded is confusing as heck. Do I need to have this switch in the on or off position? High temperature property off? Seems like the ON position is correct so it will throttle down the CPU accordingly.

Nexus 6P Battery life thread

Everything on the N6P fit my bill except I'm still a bit skeptical on battery life. Its got one of the biggest battery capacity right now of 3450 mAh + new marshmallow power saving feature but I'm worried about the power hungry Qualcomm 810. My current G4 is only with 3000 mAh which I get roughly ~3-4hr SOT of gaming/chat/browsing/GPS which only last me 2/3 of the day so I always carry two batteries. (I hate carrying an urine pack). Compare to N6P, G4 also use 808 processor. I'm wondering if N6P on single charge can finally last me a full day. I found none of hands-on got battery remarks, so wondering if anyone got any reference data
im waiting for some reviews too because i dont think this phone will last me one full day.
lets see, hope im wrong.
cheers
The faster charging negates this stuff for me, I'm very rarely not around an outlet.
i don't have any technical sources to help my argument, but the use of 4 low-power cores should, in theory, help the 810 be the "better performer" when it comes to battery management. additionally, marshmallow is designed to suspend/kill processes that are battery dependent when the device has reached some level of sleep.
what i don't understand is the sleep timing. the high-level information i've read indicates that the phone will only go in to a "deep sleep" when it's basically face down, on your table, while you're asleep. this would be utterly useless to me as my phone remains plugged in overnight.
where i suspect the unknown impact to battery life will be lies within the micro-permission controls at the application level. having the ability to deny certain settings may help to extend battery and performance. on the flip side, i also see devs getting smarter about these controls and forcing the application to not even function if you disable a key role.
whatever happens, the 3450 ought to have better battery life than my '13 2200mAh X.
Between the 3450 battery and fast charge, I have no worries at all.

I don't think it has to be face down. But if it's stationary, it will go into deep sleep and start killing off unnecessary processes. What's annoying about the N6 is that the back isn't flat. I constantly see my n6 waking up to display content on the screen from simply being on the same surface as my keyboard. The N6P being mostly flat, would wobble less when left on a desk.

Also Sony Z5 and Z5 compact
I'm running Marshmallow on my N9 now and I have to say the idle battery drain is greatly improved. Granted I've had it on M for less than 48 hours but last night for example I set my tablet down around 1am. At 7:30am this morning it had dropped from 86% to 84%.
I expect to get about 5 hours SOT.
Even on my note 5, extremely debloated, I only get 4.5 hours. Never understood how people get 8-9 hours. Must be a cell signal reception thing.

Could also be brightness level adjustments.

After this N5 which can barely give 3 hrs SOT at best, I'd be more than happy to get even a sure 4.5 hrs [emoji14]

I'm expecting over 6+ hours of SoT. I get 5 hours and a few minuted with my Note 4. If doze doesn't beat that, I'm returning it and opting for the Z5 instead.

If that gets 8 hrs then this surely will too. Only difference is 50mah in battery size. The 810 is m more battery efficient and so is the amoled screen.

Even though I don't have one yet, I'm going out on a limb and say it will last as long as it is charged! :silly:
I would like to point out that with software, you can basically make this a snapdragon 808. The 810 is 2 quad core chips, one with a57(high power) cores and the other with a53(lower power) cores. The a57's are clocked at 2.5ghz by default, it appears huawei has underclocked them to 2.0 (smart move).
The 808 is a very similar setup, but instead of a quad core with a57's, it's a dual core clocked at 1.8ghz. Plus the gpu is worse.
So if you root and get a kernel editor... you can disable 2 a57 cores, underclock the cpu by 200mhz, and underclock the gpu by (I wanna say?) 100mhz,
BAM! Snapdragon 808.
This should pretty much negate any overheating issues, because does the 808 overheat? No. Will this boost battery performance? Yes. Will the phone still be usable? Heck yeah.
I will probably end up doing this before it's over with. It wouldn't be quite as lightning fast as it will be full speed ahead, but I'm coming from a nexus 4 with an s4 pro (The equivalent of an underclocked snapdragon 600). I'm hoping with this configuration, 24 hours with 7 hours sot.

Yeah pretty much. Haha.
In all honesty though, they preform just fine, and battery life is one of the most important features to me. It's all personal preference.
