Samsung S3 I9300 Owners that have/had a cracked screen - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all
I'm in a bit of a pickle, My S3 got a sudden death overnight while it was charging normally
It was rooted with stock kernel as well as having a cracked glass screen from a slight fall on asphalt..
Now my problem begins with dealing with Samsungs Service center, They claim they wont fix my SDS (motherboard) under warranty unless i pay ~210$ to change my whole topframe/digitizer/LCD/Glass which costs around $175 online, and all they way down to $150 if you buy bulk.
Anyways i'm pretty sure that the crack is mainly on the surface and affects only the glass screen panel, which I'm perfectly capable of changing myself (Is it possible without voiding warranty?) and the kicker is it costs ~$7 dollars..
So what should i do? fix it myself and try to have them cover the mobo/SDS, or is there a way i can make sure its only the glass screen so i can use that as leverage when dealing with the Service Centre, TBH i dont trust them 1 bit, they are all incompetent and just keep repeating what ever is handed to them.. The guy even tried to flash my phone then and there through Odin, he was convinced it was only a software thing. The crazy thing is before that my PC could see my phone when i connect it and Odin would read my USB connection normally.. NOW its definitely worse cuz even the PC cant identify the device when plugged in, nor odin...
Please advise on what the normal operating procedure in your country for a situation like this, also which path should i take? Of course i would rather not have to pay and extra $210, as i specifically asked them to just leave the screen alone, i have no problem with it, and just change the mobo or hand me a new one.. The reply is always along the line of... " its against policy sir, once a phone enters maintenance, everything has to be fixed" OK i get that, a bit cheeky. But when i can fix my screen for 10$ then its plain theft!
Im soo disappointed in Samsung at the moment. Can't believe i'm geting completely F***** out of my hard earned cash like that.
Thanks for taking the time to read.
PS: i'm currently using a $17 LG phone, amazing, charged for 2 hours, its been full battery for 4 days lol /Sarcasm

That is the normal Samsung response .
Why are you not returning the phone to the vendor under warranty ??

Brother, Why don't you try some other samsung service center?
It doesn't matter if your touch screen is damaged or even not working. If your phone is under warranty, and you ask them to replace the motherboard they can not refuse! (The broken screen does not comes under warranty) tell them to accept the phone like that only.
May be the guy in the service center you approached is a retard! Try another service center.
SERIOUSLY BRO!

Whats normal? are you sure you read the entire post. They took my phone in for a checkup today, not feeling optimistic at all.. and under 'warranty' ill likely have to pay a minimum of 220$ to get it fixed, that includes a complete new front frame/glass/digitier/lcd.. plus they might not cover the SDS motherboard because it has a cracked screen, the replacement of which [only the glass screen] would cost me ONLY 10$ to fix. But they say if its cracked it might be misuse therefore voiding waranty! BULL****, the phone is made so the screen cracks and not the actually LSD hence it should be quicker, cheaper and easier to fix
The motherboard part i'm not sure but i think its about $170 online price.
How are you not getting this! its obscene thievery masked behind "maintenance policy".
If all else fails i will be between throwing my phone in the trash and buying a new phone.. or spend around $200+ buying the parts and assembling them myself! this is not the kind of service you expect from a high end smart phone mnfg.

Thanks already read through that thread!
They all operate under the same pollicies (Samsumg centres) here in Egypt! They don't just assume the customer is correct and under warranty, they tend to try to scam you to pay up for anything.. although it should be covered under warranty..
disgusting service. I want to file a formal complaint to Samsungs regional director once i get his contact..

Try e-mailing your complaint through samsung official website.
They should call you back in 48 hours.

You asked the question i replied yes its normal what more did you want ??
Samsung's response as i said it their normal response for damaged phones as you describe warranty void .
You say .
>>>It was rooted with stock kernel as well as having a cracked glass screen from a slight fall on asphalt.. >>>
That means in Samsung's view according to their warranty terms they will refuse warranty on two counts its rooted and it has a cracked screen .
Multiple identical posts on XDA and i have yet to see one where Samsung fix free of charge and that's world wide .

Corrupt Bootloader :-( Dead Qtek2020... Need Urgent help...

I was updating my bootloader using the pnewbootloader.exe app found on the xda developers FTP this morning and something weird happened.
When the app was done it wrote 000000x000000 at the end and that was it. After updating my bootloader I restarted my phone, but it wouldn't start. It just froze at a black screen. Nothing.... I doubt if it's even on. Tried charging it and then turning it on but no responce. Even the Led is dead. I tried all sorts of methods to bring back to life but all has failed. It won't even charge for god's sake. I noticed that when i remove the battery and charge it without the battery, the led would turn red. Otherwise the device is completely unresponsive.
I desperatly need help hear you guys. This is a call for all the Pocket PC geniuses out there. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you have only two options..
GO TO THE NEAREST SERVICE CENTER and let them fix it for you
or
Do this (the instruction is for wallaby)
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=WallabyJTAG
if you get the result : 000000000:00000000 .. you upgrade your device correctly.. but why it kills your device .. i really dont know ..
the correct bootloader for HIMALAYA are boot_1.03.nb0,boot_1.01.nb0 and bootloader_1.06.nb0 ..the other bootloader in FTP the 515.nb0, 517.nb0 is for WALLABY .. bootloader_for_wm5.0 is not a bootloader but an IPL thats why i added in the name and warned not to use it.
anyway i already gives my warning about Downgrading/Upgrading a bootloader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=124909#124909
and was about to post HOW to do it .. but i change my mind since i also kill my Device due to some research and experimenting using an older than 1.01 bootloader

where can I find a service center here in manila?
tnx a lot
Thanks for your tip but ......
Well from what it seems I must have fried my device.... Now my question would be, how the hell are they gonna fix it ? And how much will it cost ?
If it's a matter of flashing a new bootloader then it shouldn't cost too much, but if they plan to replace a rom chip then I would suspect high repair charges.
If any body has any idea how much it might cost to have this problem fixed please don't hesitate to mention it cause it will surely make a difference.
If it's gonna cost me alot then I would rather buy a used xdaII and use it as spare parts for my original xdaII. Probably change the whole PCB and have it replaced with the used xdaII's PCB

if it is under warranty .. just dont tell them about flashing your bootloader .. they will fix it with no cost .. but if already out-of-warranty .. then i dont know how much really it cost for them to repair it ..
but there is always one fact in service center .. no matter how big or small they will do to your device .. it will take long before you can get your device back ..

I got one question here .....
First of all allow me to extend my thanks to Toenailed for his help on this. Now for my question. I don't get ..... How come, after all the software and hardware knowledge we've got here in this forum, we still can't fix corrupted bootloaders ? Can it be true that service centers have special hardware equipment designed to flash corrupted bootloaders ?
I live in U.A.E, Dubai .... and to be honest, I'm pretty sure that the service center is gonna tell me that the PCB needs complete replacement. Our service centers prefer to replace rather than to fix. I bet if I tell them about the bootloader issue they won't have a clue and insist on replacing the main PCB.
I seriously don't know what to do. I'M STUCK !!!!
is there a way that bootloader can be done without the need of the service centers?can you teach us?
Ok you guys this is ****'n serious **** ....
I sent my phone to the service center this afternoon, and guess what .... they couldn't understand what happened and have sugested to have the PCB changed. Changing a PCB would cost 1,400.00 DHS This is sooooooooooo ****'n expensive. A used pocket pc would cost 1200.00 DHS. I got so pissed off at this. Our service centers prefer to replace than to repair.
Now, it's been 18 hours without my pda and it's been a living hell so far. I'm so ****'n desperate right now that I could actually kiss the guy that comes up with a solution.
This is a call to all pocket pc experts including ( Buzz Lightyear, Toenailed, and Mamaich ) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE you guys ... This is really heart breaking. I'm currently trying some reviving methods but so far I haven't been lucky with anything. I really hope you come up with a solution u guys !!!
There's only one way to fix the Bootloader is by using the Jtag method to the PCB which is not described or anyone went into this experimentation especially on the HIMALAYA's Board or later ones..
I'm sorry to disappoint you my friend but pray if Toenaild will go further more and study it  and making it easy to happen...
I'm really stuck here .....`
Buzz Lightyear & ToeNailed
For God's sake please come up with a simplified version of the steps needed to repair a corrupted bootloader. I'm sooooooooooooo ****'n desperate now. Our local market doesn't even have spare parts or pcbs.

[Q] Help please!!Urgent!!!

Hey,hi to all!
I had a Live with Walkman WT19i and my screen broke..
I phoned SE to tell me what to do and they told me to send the phone to arvato services in order to be fixed...
After 4 days arvato told me that they can't replace the screen and i need to pay for the whole phone which i had about 1 week before the incident!!!
I phoned SE again and asked them about the phone's screen whether it could be replaced or not but they told me that only arvato knew what can or can't be fixed!
Jesus...
Soo...
What do you think?can the screen be replaced and they try to rip me off or they're telling me the truth..?
I would try your nearest phone repair shops, they might have spare parts for your phones as it a quite new model.
Sorry I couldn't help much
Don't like the sounds of this! Sorry to hear your problem
If the phone has broken after just one week, there is a good chance you can argue it was faulty at the point of sale and demand a new one for free. It is part of a phone's normal operation to sit in your pocket. If it broke whilst under this normal use, it is not your fault, the device is faulty.
My suggestion: get in touch with trading standards, ask them for some help. Then phone both SE and arvato telling them that you have been in touch with trading standards and what they have said. You'll be suprised how much big companies squirm when somebody has trading standards on their side.
Hope this helps, best of luck!
Thats of course your own fault. I guess you dropped it.
Your household insurance will cover this, just tell them a friend accidently dropped it
Thanks for the support Guys!Really appreciate it!
Well actually my friend pushed me accidentialy and I dropped the phone but from not much of a distance from the ground actually!
The question though was whether the screen can be replaced or not...?
Because they said something that they can't change just the screen and they need to change the board(?) if i remember correctly...:S
Tell your friend to pay for it lol
Ooow he WILL pay it!!That's a prommise...

Please help me fix my camera! Black patch..

Hi All,
I just bought the Photon 4G day before night and am loving it
But I realized that camera is showing a black patch on the screen... Its there in the file even when i take snaps as well as record videos Its set there permanently (same spot). Its somewhat translucent.
Please can anyone help me out fixing it cause its disappointing me somewhat
I have attached few images to let you guys know how it looks..
Oh and I think I dont need to point out the location of this ****. Its at the same spot in all the three images. In the second pic below the androids right leg...
P.S. Tried resetting the phone to factory setting, tried removing the battery.. No warranty for the phone. Bought it from Ebay India. Its the USA Sprint phone..
If cleaning does not help guess you will need a new one.

I did try cleaning it. The glass is absolutely flawless. So the main sensor / chip is defective i guess. I came across people facing, if not the same, but similar issues with their Android phones. I am not sure.
I hope I see someone who could manage to fix it or I'm totally out of luck. Have to live with that ass forever lol. Hope it doesnt expand any more!!!
you already stated you cleaned it ,so I will not beat that dead horse. If I were a betting man (I'm not really) I would say you have one of two issues.
1. (and I hope its not this) that phone was dropped and something broke or cracked internally.
2. Someone took it apart and lint or dust got between the lenses. Good Luck.
Althought #1 is possible, everyone I know with high end Smartphone treats them like 2 month old babies!

I dont think it has fallen... Its absolutely without any scratches or anything anywhere.. ANd the mark looks like a tiny butterfly! lol which is kinda transparent. I tried manually makin some marks on the camera lens with a blue marker pen, but that doesnt look the same at all. it just brings a blue hue (ink color) on the image. You cant see it as a mark (spot like in this case)..
And I'd like to mention one more thing. This thing, when I zoom it to the next level, it moves to the left and when I zoom it even more, it gets off the screen! (outside)Funny!
And about the dust thing, I really doubt..
Looks like dust on the sensor cant do ne thing unless u dismantle the whole camera module.

Have you tried shaking it to see if the spot will move ??

I agree with farookh. If this were an SLR, I would say dust on the sensor and give you pointers on how to clean it. Since the sensor is internal here, you probably need to return it and get a new one versus voiding any warranty by trying it yourself.

OK. Let me tell a trick as former sprint store manager. I just used this to replace my epic so I know it still works.
If you have to phone active on your account call technical support about the phone. Tell them you are calling because a Rep at the store instructed you to call and do a "advanced exchange" on your device. Tell tech support that the store couldn't fix it and didn't have a replacement phone for you. Say they wouldn't exchange for new device and gave u a hard time. It is important to sound like your very unhappy. If they mention insurance, say your phone didn't qualify because the phone suffered no damage, it is a manufacturer defect as told to you by the repair Rep.
They may attempt to ask you what store u went to. Cut them off and say sir, I am not dealing with store again. U going in circles and feel everyone is spinning u and don't want to replace phone.
They will process advanced exchange and you swap phones through mail. They will send new one and you ship back old one.

If its dust and we only have digital zoom, shouldn't the spot still remain even after zooming? why does it move outwards
And I noticed 1 more thing yesterday... When I focus the camera (specifically that point!!) towards the sun, the spot just dissolves in the light and is not visible... Same is the case when I point it towards some very bright source.

Its stock ROM. I tried using a couple of camera apps, but still no luck. The spot appears on all. Do these apps use the same module used by the Default camera App? If yes, is there a way to reinstall the module.

Motorola India told me that they cant help me as this phone hasnt released here. They have no hardware and software support. They want me to co-ordinate with Motorola USA.
And when I lookup my phone's IMEI on motorola, I see that it is under warranty till Oct 2012...
Do you think I can get a replacement being here in India. I have the box, the manual and the handset.
I would snail mail moto and get a RMA or something in writing.

[Q] Neo V touch screen issues (jittering and ghost touch)

Hey guys, im trying to confirm if the issues that i have are normal for this phone so i would be really grateful for some help:
Issue nr 1, touch screen jitter:
My screen will jitter from continuous touch, happens in games, menus or with any other usage, very annoying
(cant add links so instead i will write movie titles for youtube, user name will be "uberragnak" and it only have neo v movies in his profile)
"Neo V touch screen jitter" - single touch
"Neo V touch screen jitter 2" - duo touch, a lot worse than with single touch.
Issue nr 2, "ghost touch"( im not sure how to call it):
When i touch screen with more then 1 finger it will sometimes read it as a move between those 2 or more touches, mostly harmless( or so it seems) but makes multi touch paint and similar apps kinda unusable(or at least harder to use), also happens everywhere.
"Neo V service menu touch test (ghost touch between points)"
Issue nr 3, high px in touch move program:
While im not sure what px stands for i can tell that move in my neo v kinda "lags" behind, my HTC wildfire S is A LOT more precise (my htc have 1px while my neo v have 11px).
Issue nr 4, deflected accelerometer:
Not exactly screen issue but wanted to add it. In racing games my car will instantly turn right even when left on flat surface, not a major issue especially that you can calibrate it in most games but still.
"Neo V deflected accelerometer"
Im not 100% sure that all those issues existed from the start but i think that at least jitter wasnt as bad as it is now(i noticed all of those issues 2 weeks after getting the phone) and im sure that it existed at stock android (GB), upgrading to ICS changed nothing.
I did send my phone to sony service center for 5 times already without them fixing anything:
1.(regenersis) Software flashing, saw no issues.
2.(w-support) 2nd sony service: scratched my screen protector, software flashing, saw no issues.
3. Went to regenersis again, this time around with youtube videos, they replaced fictive touch module and ear speaker(dunno why, connected with touch module ?), as you can guess it fixed nothing.
4. I Demanded new phone from my local seller (reclamation law in Poland), regenersis as an official service had to say if they agree or not so they refused to do expertise and said that they can fix it at best so i agreed, took 3 weeks then they said that they never receive an answer from my local seller if i agree on repairs or not(and im sure they did get it).
5. They wrote that they fixed the issue without exchanging the phone, obviously they didnt.
I would be really grateful if someone could confirm that those issues are normal for this phone or not because at this point i need to know if this is really worth the fight, especially that my HTC WF S feels so much better than neo v but is suppose to be worse.
It seems to me that this isnt normal especially that they did changed my touch panel and still pretend that they want to fix it while waiting for me to get tired, or so it seems at least.
If it is possible to fix those issue without big cost i could even resign from warranty, at this point its worthless anyway. Will be grateful for any help, thanks in advance.
By local seller, you mean some tele operator, or some local shop?
Are you sure that shop(whatever it is) have a deal with official SE service center(or any service center which have deal with SE)?
Problem here is that between you and service is a shop. That way you can't test phone before you sign.
If that is service center(SE or deal with SE) go there and demand new phone(make sure it's still in a law to demand phone after 3 repair which failed), don't accept repair, if you are able, print out that law and go with it, also threaten them that you will contact department for customers, if you have something like that over there.

My local seller is tele operator "play" which im pretty sure have all needed contracts so thats not the issue here. After 3rd time without repairs i did demand a new phone but "play" said they wont give me the new one because "regenersis" dont want to do expertise and as such they have no base to give me the new one(i could contact with someone with more power than my local salon i guess).
Regenersis service is 200km away from my place so going there is kinda out of option and even if i go there it would probably changed nothing. I thought about contacting my local department for customers but first i wanted to make sure this is in fact defective phone rather than just low quality one because most likely it will end in court . Thanks for the answer.
This certainly isn't normal behavior, so no doubt in that, your phone have hardware problems.
Only this part of your reply I don't understand: because "regenersis" dont want to do expertise
how do you mean don't want to do expertise?
maybe it's problem in my english I know what word means but can't understand in what meaning you put it there.

Problem is that i dont understand that also. Expertise is needed if i send phone for reclamation, after all its the base for repairs/exchanges or at least i thought so. My phone was send to regenersis and after 2 weeks some lady from "play" called to me saying that "regenersis do not do expertise's for SE phones" and without expertise she cannot give me a new phone, which kinda left me confused because they are official service and i always thought that expertise is REQUIRED for them to even start repairs, maybe she lied to me but considering that "regenersis" is known for being the worst polish service center that was sued multiple times already i wouldnt be surprised if she said the truth.

[Q] So...Screen help

So i dropped my s3 today... well the day i dont have the otter box i drop it, and the screen crack making the phone not responsive and then the screen turned all blue
and so i found this store that replaces all of that for 190$ worth?
Do the screens become laggy, and should i just stick it out with my bb 9900 for the time being (im a student) and wait for the s4 to get lower and just pick one up
I picked up my s3 in march for 325$
:highfive:
thank you, sorry i wasnt alowed to post in Q&A

Weird that you weren't allowed to post on the Q&A section cause you're already a senior member. But anyway since you got it on March then isn't it covered by warranty? Replacement screens on the internet are sometimes bogus unless your really know how to criticized the item being sold. I suggest that you bring it to Samsung for repair.

How much do you think the repairs at the Samsung centers are? I got. My. Phone off someone on kijiji and he got it from Hong Kong for dirt cheap and then I found out the pho was from France pretty sure from Orange. I'm not really the type of person that wants armatures to replace my screen... But the phone is like 300$ now and I do love my phone because no one else I know has the Grey one and I can't sell it on eBay because I have personal things in it, or should I just keep it as a decoration and buy a s4 when it's lower....
I don't know what to do... Is it really worth 200$ to fix a phone that I can get for 300$ but I wonder if they'd fix everything else because I've been having signal problems

Better go and ask them about it as I haven't really encountered bringing in a phone for repair. And if you ask me if it's really worth it to repair a phone for almost half the price when you bought it... well... I think i'll pass and just get a new one because you'll encounter more issues afterwards. Of course it's a different issue when you send it Samsung for warranty issues.

If you take it to a Samsung supported repair shop they will know its under warranty by the imei and serial number. You wont even need to have the reciept if you got it from someone else.Same happened to me once.If you want to replace the screen yourself then buy one on ebay for 140 bucks and do it yourself with a video tutorial from youtube. Its not that hard mate.
Ive changed a few screens for friends with ones from ebay and they are perfectly good and dont have any problems at all.Run perfectly and you save heaps too.

If its under waranty it should be free.Otherwise get a screen from ebay for 140 and fix it yourself and then try and sell the phone for 250.
250 + the 60 you saved will be 310 to go to an S4 at least mate.Id see if its covered first and then you will have a working phone to sell + 200 bucks.

Yeah mate all warranty coverage is free if its something like a hardware issue. If you drop it and they can tell then its up to them but if you dont have any marks on the side that makes it look like it has been dropped then just say that it wont start for some reason.
The bad thing is if it has been rooted and flashed and you havent reset the binary counter. Then if they see that they will most likely send you a letter asking you to pay cos that will mean you have lost the warranty.

Replacing the screen wont do anything to the touch at all.Ive changed screens on the S2,S3,Note2 and iphone4S with ones Ive got from ebay to save money by not paying store labour rates and none of them have any problems or screen issues.

Well then its great I guess these issues used to persist earlier..
If there's nt much problem then use the warranty damn its useful.

Of course. That's what warranty means. Manufacturing defects....
You need insurance for loss or damage

Yeah mate if they know its the screen from an accident then they wont fix it.If you want to purposely brick your phone and say it has SDS (sudden desth syndrome) thats up to you but you may want to just fix it yourself if you cant find a non-samsung store that will do it for cheap..meaning screen + labour maybe 200 bucks.
Better to start looking at youtube videos.
