Emotions Are High in Anticipation.... - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 General

Emotions are high, but let's pause for a moment to thank the devs for their commitment to making this device the best it can possibly be. Without them, we'd just be a bunch of whining babies! Thanks devs and modders, very grateful for any of your contributions on this upcoming device!

Things to achieve.
1. Unlock
2. Root
3. Remove bloatware
Become N3 crack flasher... Raise it up to the devs
Tap'd via S4

Not to be a buzz kill but don't we essentially know based on the s4 that this won't be unlockable and potential non root? I would cry if this is the case.

We we'll see root. Bootloader unlock too but there may not be a way to avoid voiding the warranty with Knox. We'll see.

Corporate sales reps have indicated the Note 3 is being targeted like the S4 for gaining enterprise accounts, so seems a given it probably will be locked down like the S4. At least for the rom hungry there is SafeStrap, but the catch there is you lose at least 2GB more of internal storage to the new rom.

This safestrap is intriguing. I'm quite okay losing an additional 2 gigs for custom roms especially when the phone starts at 32 and you can add apps to SD.

Not For Long.
Time and time again people have pleaded with motorola about this issue. Motorola does not listen to it's customer's; it listen's to it's carrier's. It's up to a dev to get this thing unlocked. Period.

Well, a few customers would be very happy. Unfortunately, the vast majority of customers have no idea what a custom ROM is, or care about even rooting their phone. Carriers like Verizon have much to gain by taking steps to insure that most of their phones in the field remain stock. I'd imagine that KurioHonoo hit it square on the head. Moto believes it more important to remain a favorite son of the carrires, rather than take a step that would please a small percentage of customers at the risk of doing anything to weaken their favored carrier status.
The fact that Moto manufactures much of the cell infrastructure equipment for the carriers probably reinforces this attitude.

I sent this in to Droid life and tweeted it to Android Police and what not. Come on guys, stop the pitty party and lets show Motorola how big that actual def community is! We're not just a small percentage, I know that for a fact. At least around here, where I live, everyone knows or at least knows the basic idea of what rooting and such is, and they are aware that HTC is supportive and Motorola is currently not.
But let's retweet this link to Motorola, and post on that forum. Let's show them how big we really are!

[Q] Any ROMs out with App2SD and the other new stuff from the OTA incorporated yet?

This is a bit of a lazy post, I realize...I just don't want to sift through all the dev threads . Does anyone know if any ROMs out there have the new features from the OTA update going, in a way that maintains the unlocked bootloader? Thanks in advance...!
Don't know why folks are so fixated on the extremely limited apps2sd "feature." It does not save any appreciable space. You are far better off using a third party app to move the data.

+1 Unless the ME7 radios are substantially better I see no reason to go after it. Those of us with the 16GB phone have to suffer for now. My speculation is that VZW baited us with the App2SD feature so they could shut down our root / custom Rom experience. It's rather ironic though that 1% of their customer base (Us) can generate this much angst from Big Red.

I'm actually quite annoyed about the latest update. Knox is not something I want or need (didn't take the update, using clean rom). I OWN my phone. I don't NEED it for work. I do not require extra security for corporate stuff and therefore am annoyed that this is a forced option. If Samsung wants to enter this arena fine by me, but the consumer needs the choice, not a bait and switch update.
As far as any roms? Not any useable that I'm aware of unless you don't use wifi or the camera. The rooted rom made by beans didn't have working wifi or camera without the secure boatloader, and then his phone was bricked. So until a workaround for the boatloader is found, you won't see any I believe. Check out the Bounty and add to it. As they say, money talks. It has been hinted that root probably has been obtained already but without the ability for custom recovery, it's not really useful to the development community. Patience and time. The S4 is a new phone so people will work on it, but add to the bounty to "entice" those with the skills to put there precious time into helping us out.

I would like to think that works, but I hardly see the value of conditional contributions for work on this scale. I'm not one to think that only one means can accomplish an end, but to me that's an awfully small amount of money when assayed against the work involved.
I've seen AOSP builds done where the dev accepts no donations whatsoever. They do it for the sake of doing. I've seen it done where the dev accepts donations, but I'm unclear as to whether a bounty was the impetus.
I believe that time is the primary driver here. In time, an AOSP dev will take on this phone as a personal hell. Then you shall have your AOSP rom, and I'd suggest tossing the fifty at the man doing the unbelievable amount of labor involved. Perhaps offer to test, as well.
As noted, I hope I'm wrong.

Didn't think you were. I was, however, putting my thoughts out there for you and for the devs that work their butts off. Whether you meant to give offense is of less concern to me than those whom might have received it as such.
I do think that the observation is harbored by many, but I think the situation is as good as one could hope. Consider that this is a CDMA device, on the 3rd largest network, and a niche phone. It explains a lot of what you've duly noted. I think, relatively speaking, the level of development is quite strong, and will get much better with the passing of the new year.
Ultimately, I'm glad you are enjoying the phone.

"Condition contributions" are exactly what brought Sbrissen to the note 2 and ktoonz to the s4. Which worked out fantastically. I know I would personally throw in at least 50 for a sbrissen over here ( he has Verizon but did it for sprint too). although thanks for josh beach and freeza for all the work they do. I prefer aosp , although jellybomb is a beautiful thing.
To be honest, I could take or leave AOSP. On my Note 2, I would flash an AOSP ROM but would soon start to miss some of the TW features that were native to Samsung phones. Sure there were some third party apps that did some of the Spen functionality, but none were as good as what Samsung did. I actually like the Samsung camera as well.
For some, saying "Pure Android is the only way to go man..." is a little silly to me. Those people are starting to become the Apple people of the Android world.
For me, installing one of the amazing Roms already here so I can customize what I want on the phone, plus a stock looking launcher like Nova equals the best of both worlds: The cool functionality of Touchwiz with the clean look of stock Android.
...We're growing. Slowly but surely. Patience is key in development. Extra donations of encouragement is good but..sometimes even the best motivating incentives can have hurdles because of the intricacies the devs encounter... It's a time game and most importantly it's about doing it right! Or as close to stable as possible =). Soon enough we'll all be breaking off a pice of our kit kat bars.

You'll note that what I wrote was speculative. That stated, I'd rather have the word of the devs you mention stating that a $50 bounty was that which triggered their initial foray into building an AOSP rom for a specific device. If you can point me towards that, I'll find it pretty cool.
I'll stand by my initial post, which averred that, though plausible, seems only part of the picture.

You're welcome
The problem is you guys are failing to understand a few things:
-This phone is HIGH end, costing 700+ dollars.
-A lot of folks got their upgrades on the S4, HTC One, or Nexus 4.
-There are a lot more players in the game this time around. LG,Nexus 5, Motorola, etc. Much more diverse and people have spread out over phones.
About AOSP; lazerus06 said it perfectly. To install AOSP on this phone without proper support for its features is pretty much gimping the phone. I suppose there will always be the set-in-their-ways diehard AOSP fans, but for this phone it is ridiculous and irrelevant.
As for dev-fanboyism--the issue is that you guys overlook devs if they aren't your "favorite dev" which is pretty bad for development in general. I get it. You found someone who's work you enjoy and you want them to follow you to your next phone, but seriously. There are good devs here and yeah, there may not be 20 different ROMs to flash, but that's better for the forum. You're used to your old phones having 63 different ROMs all taking the same mods from the same people with only slight variations (themes, and maybe a mod or two) in said ROM. That's retarded. Nobody wants a clone of someone elses work with a different theme. Understandably, this can look like a lack of development for this phone, but on the contrary, it helps weed out would-be clone devs and hopefully will retain a good choice between a few ROMs that are incredibly different from each other.
As for kernel devs, I got into building my first kernel not even a month ago and let me tell you, these people are nobody to praise. I would never accept some bounty or even take part in one to pull someone over to build a kernel for my phone. Ktoon may be a cool person IRL, but online the dude has a big head and is terrible at taking suggestions, and fixing problems. For example, when I had the Galaxy S III on Sprint and had no experience in kernel development, I relied on other people's kernels and let me tell you, his was the most unstable, problematic kernel I've ever come across. I have on a few occasions tried to reach out to him via PM to get some of the problems, namely Bluetooth audio fixed and his reply to me was

Now to me that sounds like someone that doesn't care. If it were my kernel, I would not rest until an issue was fixed regardless if I had the problem on my phone or not.
Also, building kernels is not rocket science and with websites like GitHub around, you can kang someone's source, patches, mods, and features straight out of their repository without doing any real work yourself. It is actually quite easy to do if you don't plan on doing any original work. So, please don't fool yourself into thinking some of these kernel devs are people you need to throw money at to get to get decent development work. Because, the best developers aren't the ones who can be bought over to another phone.

I'm still lost on what features I would lose with aosp? Touchwiz? I use nova anyway. S-pen? I rarely if ever use it..and all your losing is the hover function anyway. I hav owned the s3 ,n2 and s4 and always used aosp. With variants like rootbox and carbon I really don't see what I'm missing out on? Other than Samsung and sprint bloatware..I mean miniN3 is proof of how much junk is shoe horned onto our phones by the carriers and Samsung. I don't change prls? Although I don't think aosp is perfect it is nice having that option. I do prefer the stock camera and video player.I amsseriously not being a ahole here I am just asking.

Rooting help

I recently heard that some rooting methods aren't all that great for rooting phones for e.g: when I rooted my s3 people constantly had a hard time hearing me speak when on the phone that being said what is the BEST root method?
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note® 3
That would have nothing to do with it as far as I know. Root away.
The two most talked about here at XDA are CF-autoroot, and the kingo method.
Apparently the kingo allows to to potentially root w/o tripping the knox warranty counter. Which may or may not effect your Sprint warr. (but as soon as you install a custom recovery, it'll trip the knox.)
The other is the CF-autoroot, which trips the knox. Which may, or may not effect your Sprint warr.
The CF method was made and is maintained by our very own dev-extraordinaire Chainfire. Verified gold standard of rooting here on XDA. I recommend it.
Low call volume may be related to a rom you flash, but never "caused by rooting".

But if Knox is tripped it pretty over

No it's not. Mine works great with Knox tripped. Don't know how you go from rooting then to tripping Knox causing problems. Don't root then.

Agreed. That makes no sense.
If you don't have a solid Reason for rooting, certainly don't do it.
And if you are actually worried about warranty, don't do it.

Well, there we go, huh? Thank you for so very succinctly proving my point, and confirmation that you've the vocabulary and social skillset of a preteen.
You're right, the people here in this forum, especially micmars as an example, don't "own" this site. But maybe with your exceptional observational skills you noticed that it's RUN by members, by users that create and foster a community of respect. And especially here in the Note3 forums, it's a small community of tight knit, well seasoned users, with Years of rooting/modding/general android experience, all of which have now seen you have no place here.
So you're right, it's irrelevant, to you. You won't be receiving ANY help from this community.
And insulting micmars? Hehe, you've made no friends with that. No one here is impressed with flippant BS.
Good luck elsewhere!

Thread cleaned...
ALL users are expected to be respectful when they post, and use of the search feature wouldn't hurt either in this case, as there are plenty of other threads that touch on this subject already.
Keep the self-righteousness and attitudinal style of posting for the social media sites folks..XDA is for development.

Petition to unlock bootloader

THIS IS A PETITION TO UNLOCK OUR PHONES BOOTLOADERSYes I realize this has been posted several times but it seems to have died out again so im restarting it. We are 431 signatures away. Sign here - http://www.change.org/petitions/sam...ock-the-bootloader-of-the-verizon-s4-sch-i545

Away from what
edit: Jesus, just clicked the link... at least make a real attempt? what the hell is
"To:
Kwon Oh Hyun, Samsung USA
Daniel S. Mead, Verizon Wireless
Samsung USA and Verizon Wireless
Please unlock the bootloader of the SCH-I545, respectively. We wouldn't want this device to be retired due to the fact that the people are not fully satisfied with it in its current state.
Sincerely,
[Your name]"
First off, this was clearly copy and pasted... Why does it say "Please unlock the bootloader of the SCH-I545, respectively". The word "respectively" would be used if there was multiple things being asked for, with different details to each... saying respectively lets you know that the list of details was given in the same order as the list of things those details apply to.
Secondly, who is "We" in the "We wouldn't want this device to be retired due to the fact that the people are not fully satisfied with it in its current state"? Because Samsung DEFINITELY wants you to retire you S4 and buy an S5...
Thirdly, that sounds vaguely like your trying to come off threatening... is that really the intent?
Lastly... Is this a letter I am supposed to send it? Its like the description of this petition but then has a generic [your name] at the end where I would expect the author of the petition to have signed?
I'm on your side and I found more things wrong with your petition the the number of sentences it features. Thats not good.
Please don't come back and say "OHHHH I DIDNT WRITE IT". If you didn't, please don't redistribute such crap... really poor representation of our requests.

Hey buddy hop off. I will say I didn't write it because that's what I want to do. Secondly, maybe you should work on developing and attempting to better the community rather than being an ass hole. Thanks and have a nice day while leaving me alone so that I may do so as well.

If you want to watch thats fine.... but Its an Android Development community. You reposting ridiculous online petitions is certainly not bettering the community and honestly if I can do even a little to keep us from being represented by that piece of **** I will have done a great service.
If I were an executive, and got a letter/petition written like that, I'd just dismiss it as coming from someone having a hard time keeping up in middle school (and who's parents were actually paying for their phone). Seriously, that petition is a waste of time and effort.

Your hearts in the right place man. Maybe just clean it up a bit and make it more professional.
Also... go easy guys...a mod is definitely going to step in here and clean this thread and possibly close it due to the language.
I'm not taking sides... I get where both of you are coming from... just maybe could have been said better is all

I think the other threads died for a reason. It's a futile effort.
I'm pretty sure that I read recently that the Department of Defense just approved the Knox security system. What's that mean? Samsung can potentially sell millions of phones to the government, who is not interested in phones that can be hacked. Now, consider the hacking community. A couple of thousand potential hackers. Which do you think Samsung is more likely to pay attention to?

I have a serious problem with this country if a president spends any time dealing with something as minor as this.

Oh, I don't know.
It's probably a lot more challenging than fixing the VA bureaucracy or trading five very bad men for a runaway soldier.

Make that 430 to go.
Just signed the petition. Mr. Hyun & Mr. Mead are probably going to laugh their asses off when they get it, though.
