[Q] Tether DNA's WiFi connection to USB - HTC Droid DNA

So, I'm moving. And my PC doesn't have a WiFi card in it for the time being. Ethernet is out of the question.
I have an unlimited Verizon 4g plan... but I heard they don't let you tether for free anymore over their network with unlimited. (I can use WiFi root tether, but that's beside the point.)
I've tried using the Settings => Usb Tethering option, but stock sense doesn't let you tether without a 4g connection enabled.
Any ideas? (Preferably something without dumb limitations, like no https etc, but beggars can't be choosers.)
Thanks!
-Frankie

im on digital dream 2.2 and am posting from my wifi routed through my phone using the normal usb sertting smart detect or w/e its called
i disabled cell data just to be sure it works, as for stock i was kinda sure i had done the same thing before but dont have any way to test it again atm.

Interesting. Do you have HTC Sync on your pc?
Only way it'll let me do it is if I use data. I'll post screens in a min

I use fox fi and with the pdanet application on the pc you can fake your image hiding your tethering, doing it the way the guy above states does not work on stock anymore normally and would certainty show your usage. on pdanet just use stage two usage hiding uh is hard to explain and I'm on my phone I'll update my post in like 10 minutes showing what I mean with pictures on my pc K.

Thanks mate. I didn't know PDA used my phones WiFi. Thought it only worked with 3g.
Doesn't the program not let you use https and stuff?

on PDANET atm with LEVEL II usage hiding and i was able to get into things like paypal with https and what not. So i think it would be fine, i don't have unlimited anymore so i use no hiding but i turned it on to see if it works and it seemed to. Im posting this with it on level II.

Definitely works and will do the trick for now. Thanks man.
The free version kind of blows... I go through the allotted data in like a minute.
Do you notice pretty low speeds, or connection drops when the phone goes to sleep? Do you know if I need to keep it always screen on or something? Or is this the level 2 screening?
Wish there was a way to do this natively without having to do all this, but will work in a pinch. Thanks!

it works by using a advanced proxy type thing( its complicated) but i notice no difference with it on level 2 and none and witht he phone off i do have a fox fi key though since i use it for work a lot. with the free version i did notice it was slower but i had that version so long ago they had it where it was unlimited but only 180KB/s so it was slow regardless, this was a OG droid so long time ago. its still cheaper than getting hard line lol and an one time only payment, i used to have issues on windows 8 but their newest pdanet client for desktop fixed those. i get around 20mbps in the field generally when working.
hope this helps explain some things.

Thanks bud, yeah it helps. I'll probably end up buying it eventually... WiFi Tether [Root] works fine for WiFi, but for some reason FoxFi scares me. I feel verizon will strip my unlimited away from me while using FoxFi. Not sure why I feel safer using the WiFi root tether app though.

they should be able to tell your tethering with a normal non proxied app. In reality though they can allways tell if they cared but unless your use more than like 6 GB idk they would care if your plan is expensive enough lol.

Yeah, I wish there was another way than pdanet to do it. Wish there was a way to tell if the speeds are just my phone or the free pdanet version.

how low are the speeds on speedtest.net on pc vs on the app on the phone, mine are almost same.

I was.... "Testing" the download speeds through pdanet. Its about 1000Kbs slower through pdanet.

Any way to encrypt signal (even really simply)?
I know when I go to this convention next week all the bored people are going to steal my bandwidth (VZW dialup is not fast enough for anyone but me).
I am pretty sure there was a way to configure WEP, tho I have only gotten WMWifiRouter to work one time. And it was because there were no other AP's in the area. For some reason if I am in an area where there is an AP but it's secured, my phone keeps prompting me to connect to it, and if I dismiss the message, it never properly initializes where any other device can connect to it.
No errors show up on the screen, it just doesn't show up as an available wireless AdHoc network. I've tried running the latest trial version, and the version that is in DCD's kitchen, same problem on both.
Maybe I'm just not smart enough to figure it out, or maybe my brother's PDA and my Ipod just aren't compatible with it. I got it to work 1 time, and it was with my laptop.

Did my update work? Didnt need a new a-key...

So I just went from stock radio and rom (VZW) to radio 3.42.30 first and then dcd's latest rom.
Did the *228 update, yada yada - made a phone call and connected to the internet with no problem
From reading many posts, how-tos, etc, I was under the impression that the a-key would be wiped out.
VZW boot screen shows the correct new versions, custom rom is installed, yada yada
is this normal?
BTW - how can I test to see if Rev-A is working?
i have never had to get a new a-key.....I have flased uuummmm 5 times i think

to test, you must tether to a laptop,
open the commanager, then select internet connection sharing.
connect to the internet on your computer and go to a test like speedtest.net
i wish i had the data plan so i could use the rev A lol the wife put her foot down on my $150 phone bill lol

problem is that I dont get EVDO service in my home, at least not very well. Got to climb the walls a bit to get even one bar.
Was wondering if there was something I could check on the phone itself, without tethering.
If not, I'll have to try it tomorrow when I can take my laptop elsewhere

no you don't
you can use a site like DSLReports to do a speedtest in PocketIE

perfect! exactly what I was looking for. Thanx!
I have flashed many, many, many times and never needed to reset akey (just lucky I guess).
Other than speed, as these guys show, there is no actual way to tell. If you are in an area that has it, and you installed everything ok you should be getting it.
I've reset the A-KEY.........Just call verizon and tell them you were having a problem and reset your phone and tell them you have seen this problem before and they WILL NOT give you any problem issuing a new A-KEY as long as you seem to know what you are talking about!!

not exactly...while that will give you a speed reading, it wont be really accurate, cause your phone both needs to download the data and process it, the device needing to process it might give you slower than normal results.
when you tether with a laptop, the phone is just downloading the data, computer does all the work processing, which it doesnt slow down, (unless you have a computer with specs close to your phone...)
as far as i know, thats the way it is...and why i always tether to test the speed.
also, if you do use it on your phone, be sure not to use something like opera mini or something like that, because that will give you the speed of the opera server, not your connection to the internet...
good luck

Well I think its working - when I got to work today I gave dslreports mobile a try....have 3 EVDO bars. Tested a 400k file....results: over 600kbps
try this site designed for mobile phones....
http://mobilespeedtest.com
Should give you a reading... I get up to 2.3 mbit..... average is 1.6.....
Did the same thing with my newly, recycled, replacement phone. And strangely enough, I didn't wipe the A-key like I did with my original. Weird, but counting my lucky stars.
Having some issues with slow detect of towers at my work desk - signal has been usually week - but found. Have done the EPST M.IP change/update thing - but the jury is still out as to if that has helped? Had similar issue with last phone. Probably not related so I just digress.
Thanks for the mobile speed ck links...
Speedtest doesn't even finish while I'm at my desk. Nice...
Desktop comes back at over 5.5kbs (FIOS).
Guess I'll have to try it else where. Nice testament to my connectivity to the towers while at work, huh. Can't win 'em all I suppose. At least the rest of the upgrade has gone well.

Controlling my Thunderbolt wirelessly while tethering...possible?

Pretty much what the title says....details:
I ditched my horrible AT&Trash dsl to tether via my TB (faster speeds and saving $20/mo). Problem is, I recently moved and I have to have my phone right next to the window to get solid and consistent LTE signal, so every time I get a text or something I have to get up to go look at it, cause if I move my phone it'll drop to 3G (that's another issue....whenever it hands off from 4G to 3G I almost ALWAYS have to go into Airplane mode then back out or reboot for my TB to acquire 4G signal again...anyone know a quicker way? I have latest radios....) then my tethering all my but dies and I have to start the whole process over.
I am wondering if there is a way or maybe an app I can get where I can control my phone via my PC wirelessly while tethering.......from what I've read you either have to be connected via usb (window is too far away for that) and/or your pc and phone have to be connected to the same wifi network (which, if I'm tethering and my pc is connected to the internet via tethering to my phone, that isn't really true...is it?)
So.....any ideas?
Thanks much!
This may be of some help for texting. I use bluetooth for calls. I almost have the same situation.
Check out this Android Application I'm using "DesktopSMS" on my Thunderbolt. Check it out here: http://bit.ly/qApcgj
I had the same issue, my solution was rather eloquent I bought a tablet so that, while my phone is in my window, I can get my texts on my new happy Motorola Xoom. Not sure if its possible for ya BUT it is well worth the investment. Also, are you PAYING for your tethering?
Cmon lol, no random quips? I actually DO have a solution but SOMEONE has to say SOMETHING lol!

[Q] Wired Tether

Is there free wired tethering available for this phone?
is there a free supported app?
The computer im using doesn't have a wireless network card( it's an old computer).
and im wondering if there is a way i can get my phone to be its internet until i get a card.
I want to turn it into a FTP server.
Any help that helps, THANKS
Relative to the wireless part. I have a couple of these that I got just for this type of purpose.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037G2BMY
Cheap, FAST and very handy to have around in the case someone brings over a computer without wireless access.
As for using your phone for the internet, that works good for browsing etc... but you will have a hard time getting your phone to provide services like service (FTP) since the IP is NAT'd....

The phone will definitely not be a permanent fix. I'll still want to use the phone haha, i just want to set it up and see how it goes first.
the router isn't that far away, but it's a floor above so it will be going through at least 1 wall...
and thanks ill look into that
would

work? ill try it out in a bit but was just wondering if someone has tried before...
Edit: that links app does NOT work for the leaked ics kernel
I thought you could just plug the phone into the usb and select internet???
No verizon made a fee, id rather go though our guy's for wired tether you know, i just need to get a little usb wireless dongle thing then i guess
I use pdanet
Easytether works fine for free as long as you dint visit any secure sites

THANKS SO MUCH!
Glad to hear PDAnet works. I tried the Wired Tether on the Google Projects page with no luck on CleanROM 1.7.5 or CleanROM 4.2.2.
Seems to be a kernel issue I think the one from Google will work when we get aosp or cm working. Maybe the ics official release will let it work on sense roms. The PDA net app works fine currently.
I use ClockWorkMod Tether. Love it.

[Q] Tethering possible w/o root?

I know this is a stupid question. But, I have to ask just in case there is something out there that I might not know about.
I also know by now that root after the OTA is not possible (I will not play with JTAG).
I still have the unlimited data plan, and I'd like to take advantage of it. If anyone knows of a software, paid or not, that will allow me to tether, hotspot, I'd greatly appreciate.
Thanks. :cyclops:
Its usb tether only (not WiFi) but easy tether doesn't require root....its a bit expensive but its what I use
Had to buy it awhile back when I was stuck s-on with my inc2
There's also PDAnet (tether only, not Wi-Fi)... I'm using it currently since my replacement phone came with the OTA and I'm stuck being a commoner lol

Clockwork Tether. USB only, cost $5 for unlimited use or has a few hundred MB daily limit. You will be breaking your TOS if you care about such things.

+1 on stuck being a commoner. lolllllllllll epic post. lol
I'm still lost on how my toyota is doing wireless tether on stock rom. It has to be a previously granted permission from verizon to toyota.
So, USB is the only way for now eh?
Ok. I guess that will have to do.
So, if I was to make it to a hotspot, I now have to connect to my laptop (via USB) and then make my laptop to ad hoc?
Hmmm... this would be problematic since my tablet does not do ad hoc, unless I root it also...
Any input would be appreciated.

FoxFi works great! They recently updated it to work on the OTA DNA and I use it everyday. There are caveats, you will have to use a passcode because of the certificate and I can't use a widget to turn it but both are acceptable to me. Let me know if you have any questions.

I was actually just coming in to let everyone know about this also! It seems like the free download working well, although the cap on the MB usage on the free one is very tiny - watch a YouTube for 15 min, you're capped.
It also seems like it really works the phone, the battery level drops very fast and the phone gets hot. I know i should expect this, but a bit too much to not wonder if it's not detrimental to the phone.

I don't know what this means. your Toyota connects to your phone via Bluetooth. Unless you are saying that you are surfing the web with your Toyota, please clarify.
Foxfi initializes the stock tethering app without root. It requires you to install a security certificate that requires you to have a lock screen password.
