Preparing for 4G - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Which phone would you guys recommend as the three network are planning to rollout 4G in many cities including my area this December. I have two choices. Galaxy mega or the galaxy s3 ultrafast. I already have the standard s3 and I really enjoy it. The mega is priced the same as the ultrafast (4g) s3 with them both being £449.99. So which would you guys recommend? Pros and cons of both?

It has to be a Samsung? Cuz if you're ready to spend that amount I would wait another, maybe, 1 or 2 months and go for a nexus 5.

I would go for a nexus 5 but I dont like stock android. Never have, never will. Always prefered touchwiz and its usefull and quirky features.

Well, if you have a custom rom you can have any theme you want.
About tw, I don't really like it, still, I wouldn't go for any of those phones.
S4 should be receiving a price drop very soon, I would go for it.

You can pickup the S4 for about £450, new. It's spec'd better than the Mega and the S3.
EDIT:
Nevermind, cheaper:

£449 lolz
I picked up a brand new sealed S3 4G in Sapphire Black (S3 LTE) on gumtree with receipt (warranty replacement) for £225
Its much snappier than the standard S3 the 2gb ram really helps
also it supports HSDPA 42 which means i get 25mbit from three atm
The only thing you have to think of even though this was only released 12 months ago
i really doubt we will see much in the way of updates past 4.3

I'd probably go for LG. S4 and S3 LTE are nice, but nor FM radio - sucks for me.

That's an I9500, AKA 3G-only version. For 4G, the I9505 or I9506 (when it arrives) is needed.

Verizon s3 trade for Gnex ? Help!

Hello, I recently got a galaxy s3, and after rooting descovered that the bootloader was locked. I was origionally having trouble deciding between the gnex and s3. I was now wondering , is it worth trading in the s3 for the galaxy nexus that has known receotion issues ? Id love your imout , and if there is a thread already feel free to point me to that one and shut this one down , thanks!
Sent from my locked SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app, thanks verizon!
I would keep the s3

I had the same dilemma. I bought the Gnex and haven't looked back. The radios are good but not as good as my old Droid 2s.

I'm just very nourvous about the locked bootloader , granted the device has been out for only a day or two. Also what do you guys think about the hardware? The sgsIII does not seem to have that much greater specs as it is not dual core. And you have not had any terrible signal issues like I have seen online ?

meant to say quad core!
Do you even know how to read a spec sheet? TI OMAP 4460 vs S4 Krait? The S3 by more than a little.

Did you ever decide on what you want to do? I have a VZW Galaxy Nexus running a Jelly Bean ROM, 3 batteries total (2 standard, 1 extended), 3 battery covers (same as batteries), spare battery charger, and an Incipio Feather case. I still have the original box, too. The only thing missing is the headset. I misplaced it at some point.

What should be my next phone

Right now i have the rezound and i love it but i would like something else to play with also. So i would like to know what y'all thing is a good phone and why.
Thanks in advance.
Galaxy S3 quite simply top tier lagless performance or you could wait for the next Nexus to be announced. Do you have a price range or features you absolutely must have? How important are custom ROMs, kernels, etc. to you? These questions will effect what device you should look at.

Should i buy s3 or note 2? Hows the quality on note 2?
Wait! The new devices coming out at CES are better than the Note 2 and SGS3.

Both are technically excellent, personal preference on the size is the decider - I held both in my hand when deciding. The note was far too big for my pocket and embarrasing to hold to your ear (think 1980's brick sized phones).

[Q] End of Galaxy user? Should i get Nexus 4?

I had iPhone 3G as my first phone, following by 4s then i switched to Galaxy s3 in April 2013. I've learned a lot, i've flashed many custom roms, kernel etc.
After seeing Samsung delaying updates and transporting regional lock along with kitkat update are the reason that i come to decision that i will sell my galaxy s3 for Nexus 4 (cant afford n5 yet).
I need your help guys
How good is the battery on nexus 4 compared to galaxy s3?
Idc about storage
This is a q&a thread, so it also belongs there. But to answer your question. Comparing stock of both devices, the s3 definitely wins. Samsung is good at creating a good battery life, even with touchwiz
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
You endured once in a blue moon updates in iOS, but you can't in android, which there is an update almost every week?
Sent from my GT-I9300
S3 wins hands down. Tho I would recommend getting sony because don't delay the update
I disagree.
Bells and whistles like smart stay that doesn't even work properly after the jellybean update or a maybe slightly better camera (though I don't find much difference) doesn't outweight not having proper multitask. Also, neither touchwiz nor aosp have the nexus smoothness. Even my dad's former galaxy nexus feels slightly better than my s3.
If you can live with not having an sdcard or a removable battery, I'd say the n4 provides a better user experience (did try it for about a month). The only reason I'm not getting the n4 is because I'm waiting out the n5.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
This thread would be best off in the Nexus 4 section, most users who browse the S3 forums still have and use the S3.

This is a joke, right? S3 is in overall better then the nexus 4. S3 will get 4.4. Regional lock can be removed. Also SD-Card and removable battery is essential for a phone in my opinion. (Plus, the N4 is an Lg device ) So if you don't plan to go from S3 to N5, stick to the S3!
well i am curious how long samaung/other custom devs will continue support galaxy s3 in 2014
cuz S4 still havent recieved 4.3 and 4.4 is already rolling out for Sony flagship device soon, which means this is my last samsung device >.<
And isn't mali 400mp old tho?
i will buy N5 in April then
thanks for the replies

Duuuuude....4.4 has not even rolled out to Nexus devices. Hell, it hasn't even been announced. No way can it roll out for Sony devices any time soon.
Sorry i worded that incorrectly but i hope you see my point; Im disappointed with samsung updates. I should have went for n3 in the first place, i'd have saved £40 anyways.
How the hell are you disappointed with Samsung updates?!?! They are right behind Google when it comes to updates. LG and HTC suck at updates.

Except if your aiming to the n4 for its price. I seriously doubt the n5 will have the same price the n4 has. The n4 is, at this time, the best bang for the buck around. And I suspect it will continue to be for a good while.

The price is a lot more incredible too. Problem with both is, the bootloader issue. They are working on a safety strap to work with or as a recovery. I think N3 is closer to that then the Mega. But he Mega is made to be more affordable. It has already been approved for 4.3 upgrade, 4.4 ?????? We'll have to see. Just 2 weeks ago att had it for $49 online.

buying the note 3 is like going out and buying an ip5s, your stuck with what the manufacture wants you to have
Samsung can suck a hole in a wall and leave android for all i care now days, they peaked with the note 2 and now are on the hill downwards with apple
with that said, 4.1.2 is the last stop for the i717, we are way over the 18 month period and were lucky to even get 4.1.2
the Knox security is a hell of a mess from Samsung for sure , but I still got hope that will not affect the development for this device. Maybe more time but not the end . all this mess for more money in theirs pockets ..

Go to your carrier of choice and play with one before picking something you are unsure of. l rooted mine no problem (Im not a big fan of Roms because they always caused problems after 4.2.2 For me anyways ... something always broke.) My mission now is to find the best functioning kitkat rom as it was meant to be buiIt for aging phones that dont have the impressive specs of a newly released flagship device. l almost got a Xperia Z1 because of my tablet Z but didnt like the bezels top and bottom, (AND NO PEN). I have an S4...but I want a note 1 as a back up. I had the Note 2 but I sold it for lots of loot. The S4 is brilliant but the locked bootloader has cramped the phone to the point of constipation as if you got a S4 on MF 4.2.2 firmware or MK 4.3 firmware the boot loader is super locked. They even killed the service menu. So Im selling my S4 for cash + the note 1 for temp use until I see what I want next. Samsung is the only phone company left with dual storage. LG has the Optimus G pro with 32GB and an SD card slot, but with the specs on that phone they will never see 4.2.2 on it.. And it's a beast of a phone...so I will take this Note 1 + $250 and call it a day until February

Do it. There is nothing better than getting a Nexus. I jumped to Nexus 4 from the Note about 10 months ago, and just upgraded to a Nexus 5. The developer support on a Nexus is amazing. I could have easily stuck with the Nexus 4 for another year, but the lack of LTE was bothering me a bit. A Nexus phone is pure gold. By the time the Note got to be the age that my Nexus 4 was at, I was tired of it. Don't give another dime to Samsung, who will spend it on rewriting perfectly good android code into buggy bloatware. Don't let the lack of sd card bother you. I have lived with 16 GB storage without any issue, and Nexus 5 comes in 32 GB too, for just $50 more.
