FAQ
Q: Why create a special Questions and Troubleshooting thread for a specific ROM?
A: Much of the discussion in ROM development threads is not related to development, but rather problems with flashing, installation, bugs, or other things not working. While this is understandable, it is not in accordance with XDA guidelines for development sections. A dedicated Questions and Troubleshooting thread helps avoid clutter in the development thread and gives the community more opportunities to work together to resolve issues, rather than assuming the developer is responsible for all questions.
Q: How do I move my post to the Questions and Troubleshooting thread?
A: Copy the text of your post in the development thread and paste it here. Then, edit your post in the development thread to read: post moved to Q&T thread, preferably accompanied by a link to your new post.
Q: Where are the download links for this ROM?
Q: What are the known issues with this ROM?
AA: See post 1 of either development thread: [ROM][AOSP 4.2.2] CyanogenMod 10.1 Official or [ROM][AOSP 4.3] CyanogenMod 10.2 Official. There, you will also find the installation instructions and solutions to common problems.

I've had this issue since moving to CM 10.2, originally on the unofficial nightly 20130901, just flashed the unofficial 20131014 yesterday. My phone will not make sounds after previously set to vibrate, after turning up the volume with the volume key from the home screen the indicator shows volume, but will not make a sound to verify the sound level, and my alarm is silent too. Rebooting seems to fix the sound until I silence it again, but I have to yank the battery as it freezes on a reboot initiated from the power key. I have updated my recovery to TWRP 2.6.3.
I very much appreciate the screen flickering fix on the 10/14 nightly, it is completely gone today.

There's a new official nightly you can flash now. 20131016. As for the sound thing, if you go into Settings--->Sound you can check off "Volume Adjustment Sound" and it should make a tone showing what the volume level is. I'm not sure if it's related or the same thing you're experiencing, but in the past I've had issues flashing between builds (not nightlies, but flashing from like 4.2.2 to 4.3) where the default ringtone, notifcation tone and/or alarm tone would get some issue and it would say "Unknown" if you went to check what they were set to. Setting them to a new tone fixed the issue. This usually occured when I would flash a very different build version, or when I would restore a TWRP backup. But once I set a new tone it would be fine from that point on.

I am running 10.2-20131016-NIGHTLY-fireball. Our office has two wireless routers that share the same SSID, but different channels to eliminate interference. Not unique to this build, it seems that my handset's wifi is either slow to, or just doesn't, hand off to the best router when I move about. It seems like in the past i could walk from one end of the office to the other, watch my wifi signal go down, then suddenly jump up as I near the closer router. Is this a CM issue, or is this an android issue, or is there no mechanism to adjust automatically? Thanks for any help.

I'm not qualified to answer on this issue but I'll point out that I've noticed this behavior since I've been on cm. I work in a large building with multiple access points and it doesn't hand off between routers well at all.

Maybe if you check off "Avoid poor connections" in the WiFi advanced settings it will hand off easier when the current signal gets weak. Also note that you can select the priority levels for the WiFi networks in those advanced settings. Maybe you're closer to one of them but the priority of the other one is set higher so its constantly trying to connect to that one first?

Not sure if this will help as the routers have the SSID, so there is only one wireless network entry in the wifi list.

Ahh, I've never seen where two routers have the same ssid. I just assumed that since they were technically two different connections it would list the same name twice. Well maybe the "avoid poor connections" will help? I've never had that checked either so I don't know how well it works, but it makes sense that it would drop a low signal more easily for a higher one.

You'd think that would work better but it doesn't. It keeps that signal until it's low enough to drop it then actually drops it and you're without a signal for a second or few before it connects to the stronger signal. This is the behavior I notice with mine regardless if avoid poor connections is checked or not

Just checked...apparently I already "avoid poor connections" checked. I'm wondering if there is any built-in software function that actually checks for better signals on different channels when connected to the same SSID.

I flashed the unofficial 10/15 build with no problems at all for about 5 hours. Went to sleep and now I can't send txt or make phone calls. My phone shows that I have full service so I'm thinking its a borked radio. Well my comp with adb crapped out on me this morning, so I have a laptop with windows 7 and no ADB. Flashed back to a different ROM and no luck. Still no txts can be sent out or phone calls but I can receive them. Can someone point me in the right direction to install adb on windows 7? I used google but a lot of the articles were out of date. Thanks in advance!

Did you do a full wipe and clean install? Or are you flashin' dirty?...

Check that you have RUIM/SIM selected under Settings > (Wireless & Networks) More... > Mobile networks > CDMA subscription. Barring that, restore a known working backup and check the phone. If it does not work, follow the borked radio instructions - after which if you install CM again, set that RUIM/SIM connection type on first boot and restart.

I am currently on a restored ROM that I was using prior to the CM ROM. I am currently still having the same issue, I can't send out calls and texts but I can receive text. In my previous post, I stated the PC that I had ADB installed on crapped out on me this morning. I have a laptop running Windows 7 without ADB installed. My PC is running Windows XP, as of to where my laptop is running Windows 7. So I was just looking for a guide to help me install ADB on Windows 7 and just go from there. Appreciate the quick responses, it's the only phone I have and as of right now its useless.

Speakerphone patch
@scottyb96: with reference to this post, try this sound file update (install through recovery) and see if it helps your garbled speakerphone mic. Several device definitions were missing the dual-mic feature of this phone.
Also, let me know of any regressions. I updated quite a bit more than just mic.

Is there any way to subvert the text message limit where it splits? Using third-party sms apps it's possible. Just wondering if there's any hidden way or something I can edit to disable the splitting in the stock sms app.

I'd like to merge this by Thursday evening at the latest. If others can apply the sound file fix and make sure I didn't introduce any regressions I'd appreciate it. I'd also like to ensure garbled mic when on speakerphone is indeed fixed.

Radio: No Signal

My installation has been working fine and I even managed to increase battery life by installing "Juice".
Suddenly, about 3 days ago I noticed the phone was saying no signal. I was clearly getting data, as my apps worked and I was getting eMail alerts and downloads, but no calls.
I tried restarts, but to no avail. I am using Rod_100 UK as I am on Vodafone UK... I assume it is correct, certainly worked for the past month.
I have had to revert back to Windows Mobile.
My immediate thoughts are it is Juice that is causing it. I have just logged back in to my XDAndroid to write this and Juice did not load, and guess what, the signal has come back.......
Just in case is there anything else to look for?
Never heard of "Juice". I have heard of JuiceDefender however...
If you don't have the issue on a clean install, I'd say that app (or one of many I'm assuming you have installed) is the culprit. Rename your data.img and boot, see what happens.
Yes, it is JuiceDefender, apologies for the abbreviation.
I un-installed it and I have network again, but I guess I will loose battery longevity again, not that it made a huge difference.
I'll keep my eye on it....
Still no improvement
No, still not working. I get no signal, when I am in eye shot of a mast and on WM I get a full signal. I am booting in to WM to a deluge of SMS messages that I had not received, mostly vMail notifications, to which the messages are from calls that I did not receive.
The radio is not as strong and keeps dying on me requiring a reboot
I dont know what exactly but some program is giving android problems

All I can say is do the standard mess.
Make sure you're up to date.*
Delete (move, rename) data.img.
Format SD. Full format. HP tool.
*There's a lot of testing stuff flying around right now too, making that difficult admittedly. Hopefully the auto-build service will return soon, and all the madness will get committed soon!
Check in your startup file forcecdma=0. I had that problem too.

OK, I have tried deleting the data.mag
Didn't work
Have just changed "force_cdma=0" to "force_cdma=X" Will see if this works and feed back
My gut feeling is it is something to do with "JuiceDefender".

Well I took it literally, as I have no idea, sorry. I'll put it back... Anyway, I have another problem now anyway. Having made the change it will not boot. I checked the permissions and it is not "Executable" any more. I have tried changing it but it will not let me. How do I fix this - I am accessing via my laptop which is Ubuntu (Linux).
Can you help, please?

What is not "Executable" any more... haret.exe?
The startup file
Sorry, ignore me.
After the change, I double clicked the Android shortcut to launch Android, but it would not start, so I assumed the file had to be executable (as it was the only item I had changed)... I had forgotten to disconnect my TP2 from my laptop!
I've done so now and it has launched. A stupid user errorhttp://media.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
I'll keep you posted on any changes.
Ha, fair enough. Enjoy.
Solved. Keep loosing Radio
OK. I tried all the above. Delete data.img, and check the startup script/cmd.... none worked. At some point I would loose the network connection.
As it started within days of loading JuiceDefender and its components and from the description of how it works - controls the running apps including radio and data transfer, I always suspected it to be the root cause. After the other checks failed I tried removing all Juice Defender apps and since then c30hrs I have not experienced any loss of communication.
Thanks everyone for your help, and I hope this will be of use to anyone else suffering from loosing radio/ signal.

It has been a number of days now and I have not experienced the same issue, so my conclusion is that it is the JuiceDefender that caused the problem.
The down side now is that I get 7am to 4pm battery life as opposed to 7am to 7pm.... But atleast I can receive and make calls!
A note: The signal strength on the project image is not as strong as the WM6.5, but I am sure that is a known issue.

Hrm, didn't realize that app would help out that much. But, it makes sense if it's turning off all your radios lol.
Anyhoo, have you seen the kernel I posted from WisTilt2? It has full panel collapse, and battery life is astounding with it.
Code has yet to be committed, as he still has some work to do for the AUO panels (select RHOD100's basically) - so unless you have one of those you can reap the benefits of his new code .
(bzo got nearly 65 hrs with the radio on, sync off - 100% sleep.)
Looks interesting, but where do I download the latest version... I don't plan reading all the threads! And IF I installed would I loose all my settings and apps?
Update
It has been a while since I did all this tinkering, during which time there has been an update.
What I find I get is sometimes (c every couple of days) the meter says I have signal but nothing connects with a message "no network". Also, but far more frequent, as with today where it has occurred 3 times, I dial a number and nothing happens. It says ringing but there is no ring tone and it never seems to connect. I then shut the call down either by using the hang up button or the soft hang up key. The screen then changes to "Hanging Up" but again sits there indefinitely. The only solution id to do a restart.....
Any ideas?
PS: any news on when the bluetooth and camera will be working...?
I have found that any app that acts as a task killer of any sort (juice defender must in someway stop apps to save battery) can also kill your connection. I found this out while using xdandroid and it became immiediately clear when I stopped using the task killer my bars and data proved to be more consistant! Hope that helps.

[Q] cyanogenmod 7 wifi issues

I recently flashed on cm7 on my aria. it is great but my data usage began shooting up. i realized it was due to the fact that everytime i lock my phone, it disables my wifi (i saw this because everytime i unlock im on 3g for a 1-2 seconds then i get on wifi so that means that the whole time my phone is locked it uses 3g data ) is there anyway i can prevent this from occurring??
Thanks,
Okachowwa
Menu -> settings -> wireless & networks -> wi-fi settings -> menu -> advanced -> wi-fi sleep policy -> never
I think that's it.

Have you checked the Wifi Settings to see which sleep option is selected? There is an 'Never' option which tells wifi to stay on even when the phone sleeps.
One thing I noticed its that if I leave my house I have to turn off wifi and turn it back on to find my router.

yup...that's why you just turn your wifi off with the notification widget (very simple and painless might I add) if you know you're leaving the house...what's the point of having wifi enabled if you're not in range of your network? all it's going to do is drain your battery. i left my wifi enabled one day when i sent to work and within half the day i had ~12% battery life...definitely not good practice to leave it enabled that's my 2 cents, do as you wish though. to each his own.

Yup, I have the same issue with CM7 nightlies. This worked flawlessly in CM6 and stock2.1. So far there isn't a viable solution.
from the CM6.1.1 thread...
Q. How do I keep my wifi from going to sleep every time the screen shuts off?
A. There is a hidden feature that disables wifi sleep.
menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > wifi settings > menu (again) > advanced > Wi-Fi Sleep policy > Never > menu > Save
However: although you can keep the wifi service from sleeping, the wifi driver will still sleep on it's own after detecting no bus activity for a period of time.

I've made sure to set Wifi Sleep Policy to "Never" but that did not fix my wifi problems. What I see when I open Wifi Settings is a cycle of:
Code:
Scanning --> Connecting --> Disconnected... Scanning, etc
When I look in logcat it shows it attemping (in vain) to authenticate against the last wifi network I was using -- even though it is no longer in range (and clear across town). In a nutshell it is refusing to recognize the actual nearby network UNTIL I toggle wifi settings.
I've had the same behavior on FR008 and the stock ATT 2.1 load as well. When Wifi is in that on but not really connected state some apps can wake it up...the default browser usually will, but Listen would not. I just gave up and only turn on wifi when I need it.

What is the point of having wifi set to ON when you are not in range of a network? Hence why, if you are using CM7 or CM6, you should utilize the notification widget and turn wifi off if you know you're leaving the area of your network. It's simple. Things aren't ALWAYS going to work how YOU want them to work. Thing will not always be automatic. I think I quote attn1 when I say this, just because it doesn't work how you want it to work, does not mean it is broken.

Well, just because people don't work exactly like you work, does not mean they are doing it wrong. If something is broken I'm going to call it out. I might be incorrect, but let's be clear: you aren't questioning that wifi in CM7 isn't working the way it did in CM6, you are questioning my behavior -- which is a weak argument.
I guess you don't understand the issue, so I'll spell it out:
Wifi worked flawlessly and automatically for me in stock 2.1 AND CM6. This automatic behavior does not work in CM7. Manually toggling something that simply "just worked" before is a regression, not a feature. Hence the reason I point it out -- the devs can't fix something unless they know it's broken, and I seriously doubt the devs are able to test all/every permutation. I have nothing but respect for the work they do, thus my very respectful tones in my earlier posts. I've had no indication that the devs are unwilling to get feedback about their work.
You asked a question though, and here is the answer:
I leave Wifi on all the time because I'm a consultant -- I work in many different locations throughout the week, travelling the country. I have dozens of wifi networks saved on my phone, and it is useful for me to have my phone automatically jump on the correct, nearest network. I'd rather use free wifi instead of paying AT&T for data charges. It is not always possible for me to remember I'm in a location with a known wifi network, or to remember to manually toggle wifi settings: it is useful for me to have this happen in the background. Sometimes I'm on a call, sometimes I'm heading into a meeting and I'd rather not mess with my phone. I want wifi to be on all time, scanning for the correct network, and jumping on it when it's in range.
Outrageous, right?! Not actually -- this is the existing behavior in CM6 and stock 2.1. From my standpoint, wifi just worked -- I didn't have to think about it, didn't have to manually toggle something to prevent AT&T data charges.
This is desired behavior for me, and I'm happy with rolling back to CM6 to get it. I understand that _you_ don't need this behavior, but that doesn't mean it's wrong. It just means the world is bigger than you realized.
And yes: wifi in CM7 (beta) is currently broken. Read the threads. Many people are having problems with it.

That's a good tip, I feel kind of dumb for not thinking about it lol and I also agree that it is good practice to do so. I just wanted to point it out in case a dev was going through this thread which is relevant to the topic.

Many people are having problems with it.

fyi CM6 & 2.1 != CM7. Your argument is null & void.
Also, being a "consultant" and the very important man you are, flashing a rom that's not even in beta stages yet probably isn't the best idea you've ever had.

Why do you remind us that the rom is in a beta stage? "Beta" implies it is not fully functional, but your argument all along has been that it works perfectly....
Look, it's clear you haven't actually understood any of my posts. I'm highlighting error messages or erratic behavior I see in logcat running CM7. I've posted what I've seen so the devs can take action, or not, as they choose. Since you aren't in that audience I don't understand what your beef is.
Oh wait! Straw man arguments; personal attacks; logical fallacies: I've been dealing with either a highschool student or a troll - not sure which.

That being said. Beta does NOT necessarily imply that thing are not fully functioning, it simply implies that it hasn't been put into RC or stable. You can have a fully functioning beta program. HOWEVER, it may not be working properly. But creating a thread about an issue that's been brought up 20+ times now is pointless. I'm PRETTY sure the devs know about the issue, should it actually be an issue. Now that I just wasted another 15 seconds of my life, i'm going to casually /part from this thread and I'll end my post with this quote again, in case you didn't catch it the first time.

If you are not having such luck, then you need to look at your access point if you have already wiped data.
Really, the constant carping about wifi is absolutely pointless.

Me too. I can't roam between networks, either. I have to disable and re-enable the wifi each time.

1) Because Google Maps uses known wifi hotspots to help establish your location.
2) So that you don't have to keep toggling wifi on and off when moving between hotspots (or home and work, for example).
3) To use the network notification feature (aka "notify me when an open network is available").
HTH
Edit: seems to be fixed in RC3!
zervic said:
What is the point of having wifi set to ON when you are not in range of a network? Hence why, if you are using CM7 or CM6, you should utilize the notification widget and turn wifi off if you know you're leaving the area of your network. It's simple. Things aren't ALWAYS going to work how YOU want them to work. Thing will not always be automatic. I think I quote attn1 when I say this, just because it doesn't work how you want it to work, does not mean it is broken.

i have try everything and still same issues with wifi. and i change the radio ( baseband ). still i am thinking of uninstalling it bc i dont have wifi
Sorry to tell you but that was with the old wifi stuff (every nightly up to build 25), which I had no problem with. The RC/nightlies have new wifi data made by jznomoney, which I have on and off problems with. Its working for most people but there are a handful who are having problems. I flashed ladios' kernel and my wifi is doing a lot better with the new RC/nightlies.

I've noticed something similar with CM7 on my Aria. When I leave the house and come back it doesn't always connect automatically and it will enter into this cycle of scanning, connecting, disconnected.
I had to reboot the phone to get it to stop the cycle and stay connected. I don't use a lot of data anyway but I still prefer to use wifi when available. Interestingly just now it wouldn't even see any of my neighbor's wifi networks at all which is odd.

[USER][CM7] Bluetooth tips and tricks...and questions

Hope I'm not duplicating anything, but there seems to be a lot of BT related questions and none answered in one unified place. Also I think the BT Dev thread should be left to the devs (to keep it easier for them to work on things, rather than help us mere mortals ).
This applies to CM7 (latest nightlies, Tablet Tweak RCs) ONLY (as far as I know).
So, if bluetooth does not turn on, there a few things that you can try.
Do a HARD reset (that is, hold down the power button until the NookColor turns off, then start it back up.
Fix Permissions in ClockworkRecovery:
Boot into CWR (w/SD, load it in. With CWR installed on eMMC, go to ROM Manager > Reboot into Recovery. Alternatively, hold down the power plus "N" button for ~8 seconds (from a shutdown NookColor).
Try both!
An interesting thing to note is some users (myself included) can only start up bluetooth within a pretty short window of time after the NC has booted up. Not sure why timing is important, but could be a factor for those who cannot start up BT after some given time of operation.
I found this tip that may work after a fresh (read: wipe system/data) install, but may also work after flashing a nightly over a nightly.
If you're ready to turn on Bluetooth, there's a trick. If you don't do this, Bluetooth will just refuse to turn on / be enabled.
Turn off wifi (Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wi-Fi)
Reboot
Turn on Bluetooth (Settings > Wireless & Networks > Bluetooth)
Turn on wifi
It seems a bit odd, but that's what you have to do. From then on out it'll work fine.

For tethering data via BT, try android-wifi-tether. While it can be used to create an access point on your phone via wifi, you can also opt to use BT to create the tether. This works well in conjunction with TetherGPS which I use to provide GPS info to the NC from my G1 while using CoPilot Live to show navigation (I don't have data on the G1).

In other words, it works as with all the kernels I've tried (your OC'd and stock kernel): it will start up if I start is quickly, but otherwise not.

me too. I went back to 4/4 since them. If I leave BT on all the time, it is on when I boot, but if I turn off BT and reboot, it won't come on without a hardboot (holding down power.)
Fix permissions is NOT needed, just a hard boot.

For the last few days Ive been trying to get BT working w/ my car stereo, using phiremod 5.3
I have no problems enabling Bluetooth (first time I had to reboot a few times and fix permissions)
With it flat against the stereo, I'm 'paired but not connected' and getting it to actually connect usually takes 4 - 5 tries.
After its connected- when I try to play any kind of music, it gets stuck every few seconds- and stays stuck for more than a few seconds (like 10) and plays again.
I just downloaded this kernel, (wiped caches, fixed permissions again) and it connected on the second time, and only got 'stuck' once for maybe 2 seconds, and played the rest of the song with no problems.
Seems like it changed something on my end...
Just figured I'd mentioned it.
(I can go back to the other kernel, or a different version of cm7, and see if I get the same connecting/ stuttering problem, if you thing it would help)
Btw- thanks so much for sharing all of your hard work!

Never had an issue with the IMEI number, but here's how I got it setup.
Start with the TetherGPS app running server on the phone and client on the NC, as well as tether-wifi from google running on the phone, then connect to the AP on the NC
Next, open/install the app. It should read the GPS data from the phone
Now, switch back to a wireless connection with internet access, download the voice, then enter the serial/etc...
Finally, load the app back up after all the registration stuff 'n things, and use the "internet" connection from the phone to grab the GPS info.
Copied and edited from cm7 user thread.
I have xoom bluetooth keyboard with disconnect issues. Would the special kernel help with this?
From the accessories thread. "I found a work-around. Download the app Bluetooth Keyboard JP, change the settings in settings > Language and Keyboard to that app, then connect the keyboard." Anybody else try this or others? Blue Input is another one. I know of one more but can remember its name.
I'm running Phiremod v5.3 cm7 from emmc and cm7 nightlies from sd card. I usually have a data sd card but can switch it out. I have updated the cm7 sd card before. Not sure which nightly and OC I used last. Could use ClockWorksMod to flash this kernel to Phiremod v5.3. Could replace the kernel, uImage, on the SD card. Usually there are different kernels for emmc and sd card.
Another issue: When I have the keyboard active and playing flash files from the internet, it seems to buffer more. If I move the keyboard out of range or use settings to disconnect the keyboard, the buffering is less and the flash files play better. I have cyfi bluetooth external speakers. When I use them I get the same buffering issue, so I just use an external player through the headphone jack instead.

Apparently the latest version of Copilot has introduced this error. I have spoken with tech support regarding the issue and they told me that they are aware of the problem and will release an update early next week that will fix the problem. Apparently if you have version 8.2.504 it works, but the new version breaks it. The dev won't send me a copy of the old version, so I guess I'll just have to wait and hope.

I don't know if that is a solution, but the problem appears to be a conflict between wifi and bluetooth. Turn off wifi and most of your keyboard problems will go away.
Also there is an app on the market called "Null Keyboard" Which simply turns on a keyboard device that disables everything keyboard related. It doesn't disable bluetooth input, but it gets rid of the long-press pop ups and is suppose to solve other issues as well (including the software keyboard popping up every time you want to type.)
I haven't had time to install it, but it's purchased.
Does anyone know where (on the Nook) the BT chip/antenna is located?

I was just using google voice to text from several feet back. In fact it was hard to read the small print from that distance. I did not realized that keyboards have a larger range then headsets.
Testing Bluetooth Keyboard JP now. Force closes, so just switched to swift keyboard I downloaded from amazon app store for free. To get out swift keyboard and get a null keyboard, I hit the back key on the xoom keyboard, then the virtual swift keyboard no longer shows up.
@chisleu do you have a link or instruction to modify bluetooth keyboards so that keys can have their mappings corrected. Xoom has some correct and some wrong or disabled under CM7.
Couldn't get BT to work at all however powering down while the wifi is off, and turning the bluetooth on before the wifi made it works on the first try. Was streaming Slacker to my stereo in a matter of minutes. Wifi doesn't seem to interfere with the BT audio stream at all, audio sounded crisp and perfect. Range however was still limited to a foot or so.
Hoping there is a possible hardware mod that can hook up an antenna to the BT chip. I'd be in heaven if I had full BT functionality on this beast.
FYI, Although I don't have any RF experience I'm still an electrical engineer so if anyone can toss me a bone on the PCB layout or pinouts of the nook I might be able to try stuff to boost the range.
What is the feasibility of adding dial-up networking client support to CM7? Some folks are able to tether their NC to their phone using an ad hoc wifi network, and others have had success via a Bluetooth personal area network (PAN) using the "pand" utility. Unfortunately, I have a Blackberry phone, and it does not support the PAN profile. It does, however, support dial-up networking (DUN) over Bluetooth (confirmed with a Windows laptop).
According to https://sites.google.com/a/android.com/opensource/projects/bluetooth-faq, "dund" is the client utility that is needed to establish a dial-up connection from Android to another device. When I run this command on the NC, it says "dund: not found". I'm not a developer and don't know how much effort would be involved in adding this functionality to the build. Is it just a matter of including the binaries, or is there additional development work involved?
Thanks in advance..

Tasker solution to signal loss

EDIT: This issue appears to have been solved. the newest ril2 and a recent radio for your CDMA handset should do the trick. Thanks muzling, arrrggh and hyc.
The bug seems to vary for people. My signal pretends to be lost after each call, and sometimes after texts. It will still receive calls, but I have to toggle airplane mode if I want to call out or text out.
I don't make many calls so the bug hasn't bothered me much, but I had to make a bunch of calls today while on the road, so toggling airplane mode after each one actually got on my nerves a little. I was going to ask if there were any tasker users here to try out some things, but apparently tasker offers a 7 day trial straight from their site, so I decided to try it out. It crashed on its first run, but seems to be running fine now on FRX07.
It took a few tries, but it seems to be working with this combo.
Profile 1: context -> application -> phone; task-> variable-> Set Variable -> %CALL to 1
Profile 2: context -> application -> phone (NOT); task-> variable -> Set Variable -> %CALL to 0
Profile 3: context -> state -> variable -> %CELLSRV matches "noservice"; task -> Phone -> Radio -> Toggle (if %CALL matches 0); task 2 -> Phone -> Radio -> Toggle (if %CALL matches 0)
My first try had the phone hanging up on me during a call. I figured maybe the phone was reporting no signal before the hangup, so I added profiles 1 and 2 and the user var %CALL to limit the radio toggle to when the phone app wasn't in the forefront. For now at least, it seems to reconnect within a couple of seconds of hanging up. Color me happy.
Links of interest:
Quick tour of avail contexts and actions || User Guide
My next task is figuring out a way to toggle the speaker when I first dial out. It always spits some fuzz when I begin outgoing calls unless I toggle the speakerphone on and off. I haven't found an appropriate context yet (application -> phone would toggle unnecessarily for incoming calls as well, not sure if %SPHONE would detect the speakerphone as being on during the bug), but hope springs eternal.
Interesting solution...
I would much rather figure out the root cause (with a fix in theory to follow), but in the meantime anything to help with sanity is always welcome. Kudos.
Thanks. Root causes are definitely the way to go, I'm just not smart enough to aid and assist on that level. Noticed enough complaints about signal loss, I thought some others might benefit from the profiles.
Tasker is no mortscript, but it seems the closest android analog. I used to kind of enjoy scripting away at winmo's faults, and hope I might be able to smooth some rough edges in my android experience too.
Thanks... I just installed Tasker and added the profiles as you said and will report back if it helps me with the signal loss.
Would you mind telling me why you put the same task twice in the last profile? Thanks

The first toggle turns off the cell radio, the second turns it back on.
After several days of trials, I ran into an instance (when my phone was a little laggy anyway) where it was endlessly turning on and off, apparently because it was detecting noservice multiple times before the toggle was complete. I haven't done this yet, but adding a several second delay into the mix should prevent loops.
Hope it helps!
signal loss?
signal icon show no signal or signal strength zero level?
Which radio version you use?
I dunno, no signal or no service (incoming stuff still works though), I think it's a little x where the signal bars would be. It's a common enough issue, see the FRX07 thread. I'm using whatever radio is bundled with FRX07.

I think he means radio firmware - it's flashed in bootloader mode, and usually comes with stock ROM's... Basically it's completely independent of our Android port.
I'm curious, did you try hyc's updated RIL? There was a slight bug that seems to be helping all sorts of issues, it was related to incoming calls...

[Q] no push notifications on wifi with KK

I upgraded my phone to KK back in late december and have been on it ever since but one problem has plagued me since then and I'm hoping to get some insight here. heres the problem...
When im connected to wifi (and this is only with wifi, not MD) I don't get my push notifications (gmail,fb,words, hangouts, etc) when the screen is off.Often i turn my screen on and get a barrage of notifications that i should have gotten hours ago. Ive tried all the sleep modes and Ive tried turning off wifi optimization.Nothing works and I know for fact it did not do this on JB.
I DO get text messages and phone calls instantly though but nothing else will wake my phone up. While i do enjoy the deep sleep, i would like to get my notifications in a reasonable amount of time without having to turn the phone on to check them.
Has anyone else had this "problem"?
Nope. Have you looked into what is and isn't checked in your Google Settings? There's a Play Games tab that allows you to mute certain games, essentially stopping their notifications. I don't suppose you've messed with that, have you?
It's strange, I've not really heard of this, especially since you're getting texts and such.

Yeah i know and I've googled it to death for a few months now. I'll check g settings but idk why that would stop gmail. It's like when I'm on Wi-Fi w/ the screen off its just a plain old dumb phone. I turn the screen on and the notifications just flood in.
Edit: nothing in g settings is muted. The only thing i can think of is i don't have app data synced in accounts.
I think i figured it out. I had "sync app data" unchecked in accounts. So far I've been getting notifications screen on and off. Now if someone will just play back to me on wwf...
EDIT: i may have spoke too soon. It still doesnt wake up without turning on my screen

I did when I was using Omni and it worked great. I haven't used it since running RR, however.
So you're wifi connected, and have actively turned mobile data off? I have never even tried that...
If, however, you mean that this happens only when you're connected to WiFi, then no, I have not experienced this issue.
The only other setting that I can think of that pertains to sync is in system settings > Data usage > settings > [ ] auto-sync data, but I don't think that would cause the awake-vs-sleep sync issues that you're describing.
I used to use Active display, I currently use AcDisplay, I'll likely go back to using the baked-in active display.

No i never turn mobile data off. I just meant that notifications come as expected when I'm on mobile data but on Wi-Fi, once the phone hits deep sleep (<a minute) i won't get notifications unless i turn the screen on.
I ask about active display because i remember when on resurrection ROM i was using it and getting notifications then and kind of forgot about it but I'm on PAC 4.4 now and it's doing it again. However i was using the init.d scripts they have baked in but have them all turned back off now to see if that fixes it.
It's the strangest thing I've seen. It's like when I'm on Wi-Fi and turn the screen off it just disconnects from all data even though i can plainly see that it is not. Angela has the same phone with the same settings as mine but on RR 5.0.5 and she gets notifications fine.
@cyril279 I knnow this is off topic but have you tried this AD app? Its got some other features/customizations that aren't on the built in AD
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greatbytes.activenotifications
That was actually one of the first active-display variants that I tried. It worked well, but there were a couple hiccups that kept me shopping. The add-on AD clones have great features, but they don't play well with the stock lockscreen, or they leave the [home] button active, or involve significant lag when evoking the notification. The baked-in clones operate fluidly, but without the cool-stuff. I haven't tried active notifications recently though, maybe the updates have smoothed things out. I'm definitely down to try it again.
AcDisplay's development has been re-directed by Motorola. It's still my favorite of the clones, the beta version is boss, but it still isn't as fluid as the built-in boring-ol Omni AD.

Well all my testing so far has lead me no where with the exception of using that app. So far, I've not been able to reproduce the problem while using it. The question is,"what is it doing" to make it work....
EDIT: The app does not fix it....
just thinking out loud herebut, could this be a kernel issue? Im currently using PAC's kernel that comes packaged in the rom. Maybe I should try @RenderBroken 's kernel...?
Edit: Using RB's kernel breaks some of the PAC features and it did not fix my notification issue

PAC uses a modified ramdisk compared to other CM derived roms. Are you only having issues trying to get PAC running on your phone? Is it KK or JB?

Its 4.4 and I have faced this issue on every rom Ive tried since switching to KK. Im starting to wonder if it's not an issue with my wifi. Im wondering if maybe my wifi is suspending my connection when my phone goes quiet.

[SOLVED] Not Receiving Notifications on WiFi
My suspicions have paid off!! I started suspecting my router was the culprit so i pulled out my old netgear2400 and hooked it up and low and behold my notifications starting lighting my phone up again!!
The problem was the Xfinity router that came from comcast. Apparently it was closing the "heartbeat" line to stay connected when the screen was off before the heartbeat would send again, if that makes sense.
For the time being I'm going to just use my netgear router BUT I was able to fix the problem with the Xfinity router by using an app called Push Notification Fixer. Just install it, follow the instructions, and set the WIFI/mobile data heartbeat to the recommended settings. If that don't work start shortening the heartbeat time. It'll make sense when you see the app.
Hope this helps someone else along the way. I went a LONG WAY down the google rabbit hole before I figured this one out.
Great news, glad it was an easy fix!

Great news! Now you just need to install DD-wrt on your router and turn it from a $40 router to a $400. I know you like to tinker but check it out. ITs free and its just firmware for certain routers. It turned my old wrt54g into a baus

I'm having the same issue with KitKat CM11 ROM on my HP Touchpad (which is WiFi only), and will have to try this. Notifications come in instantly on my iPhone/iPads, but my Touchpad gets some serious delays...sometimes right away, and sometimes delayed.
By the way, did "Sync App Data" setting for an account have anything to do with push notifications, or is that more for backup purposes?
---------- Post added at 02:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:04 PM ----------
Oh darn, mine is still delayed even with the push notification fixer installed and WiFi heartbeat at 5min. Even after I've just rebooted my Touchpad, actively using it, and not even 5 minutes has passed. Delay was 8 minutes and then the notifications came streaming in.
With Android/KitKat, do you have to have the app open in the background for push notifications to go thru? Or run the app at least once after a reboot?
