[Q] How do you keep your Z Ultra on you? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Do you keep it in your pocket? Do you have a designated backpack for the beast? I'm considering buying one, and this is my only worry, so I'm looking for what people are doing.

Back pocket of my jeans. Take it off when sitting down. Still looking for a good leather case for it cause the "leather" case that comes with it in the box sucks.
ಠ_ಠ

Front pocket or in my jacket if I'm wearing one, and I always take it out of my front pocket when I sit down, unless it's in my jacket.
Sent from my Z Ultra, using XDA Premium 4

front pocket of pants.. but its mostly on my desk.
I've got two cases now, but I always end up taking it out and having it clean starkers naked!

I don't put my phones in my pocket, so i just carry a bag. But i can also hold it or maybe put it in my back pocket when i am not seating.

btw here is how the XZ owners solve the fingerprint problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232790

I carry my ZU on a small leather bag that can fit an ipad mini. And using sbh52 for call handling and sms reading

I keep the phone in the front pocket in my trousers, sits there fine apart from when mountain biking so usually stick it in a jacket pocket for that.
I assume it's not possible to see a demo unit? I had initially discounted the Z Ultra as an option because I was sure it was too big however I tried out a demo unit and was surprised it went in my pocket comfortably so decided to go for it although I guess obviously, the pockets on my trousers are quite generously sized.
John

I keep it in the pocket of my jeans.
The only thing I have to remember is to take it out before lifting stuff, I tend to put stuff on my knees when lifting it and I guess if I do this with the phone still in my pocket it will most likely break if whatever I'm lifting is heavy.
I'm also considering buying an insurance for the phone, it looks extremely fragile and one mistake could destroy 600€.

I just saw the dummy phones they have out and tethered to the wall, so I couldn't get it all the way in my pocket, but I'm pretty sure it will fit in my jeans consistently. If I ever want to wear other pants though, then I might have to be creative.

It's time to get some cardboard and a scissor out.
- Find some cardboard (thickness isn't that important)
- Dimensions of the Ultra: 179.4 x 92.2 x 6.5 mm (7.06 x 3.63 x 0.26 in)
- Cut
- Done

Hah, same here. I measured my "model" with the real deal when i got it - and it was pretty pretty close, but it didn't "feel right". Maybe because it was made of cardboard (duh), but it was way better to just stick the Ultra down my pants Go back to a store where they have it and wear your tighest pants so you can see if it fits. If it fits, you'll also know that it'll fit in your other (bigger) pants

[REVIEW] Cheap-a$$ waterproof cases

I had an amazon gift card to use up, and we're planning a road trip to a waterpark so I decided to use the gift card to try and find a waterproof/water-resistant solution for my lte. I wasn't going swimming with these, but I did want to protect my phone from the the occasional dunk or splash, and I didn't trust a ziplock bag to do the job. I also didn't want to spend a lot (otherwise I would have gotten the overboard case).
I ended up ordering the following cases;
BestDealUSA Waterproof Underwater Pouch Dry Bag Pack Case Cover for Cell Phone PDA Blue - $2.96
Waterproof Case for Apple iPhone 4, 4S - Also Works with iPod Touch, iPhone 3G, 3GS, & Other Smartphones - IPX8 Certified to 100 Feet - $4.57
Universal Waterproof Bag Case for Cell Phone / PDA, Blue - $0.01
Universal Waterproof Bag Case for Cell Phone / PDA, Black - $1.92
BestDealUSA Waterproof Underwater Pouch Dry Bag Pack Case Cover for Cell Phone PDA Blue
The plastic material seems strong on this case, and the seal seems like it would do a good job to keep the moisture out. The evo slides in and out easily, even with a tpu case, although it does it need to go in upside down if you want to take pictures - otherwise the camera is blocked by the opaque section of plastic, but this is not a big deal. There is a raised seal around the window of clear plastic (which takes up about 4/5ths of the phone screen) that makes pulling the unlock ring a little difficult, but not impossible. This is the biggest of the cases, with the most space around the phone. Screen responsiveness through the plastic is good, and the the window is clear, so its easy to see the phone screen. Lanyard runs through the width of the case, and seems very strong - I don't see it snapping or anything.
Waterproof Case for Apple iPhone 4, 4S - Also Works with iPod Touch, iPhone 3G, 3GS, & Other Smartphones - IPX8 Certified to 100 Feet
This one looks very similar to the higher priced overboard case and has great reviews. The areas surrounding the clear windows are puffy, as if it would allow the case to float. Unlike the other cases (which use a combination of two ziplock-type closure zips), this one has a plastic mechanical mechanism to squeeze and hold the opening shut like a vise. I don't know if I would trust this case to remain underwater for any length of time. It doesn't seem to seal as well as I would like, although the reviews all rave about how watertight it is. Having said that, the phone fits in this case perfectly with the tpu case, and even better without a case (upside down again), without being too snug, and the clear windows are exactly the size of the phone screen - only the capacitive buttons are hidden. Screen responsiveness through the plastic is good, and the the window is clear, so its easy to see the phone screen. The puffy areas around the clear screen also do a really good job of holding the phone in place, but makes it a bit difficult to press the power button. The lanyard that this case with end in what appears to be a thread that you loop through an opening in the case and seems like a good tug would snap it off.
Universal Waterproof Bag Case for Cell Phone / PDA, Black/Blue
I was only going to get the black one, but when I saw the blue one for a penny, I decided why not. These are identical cases, but one is black, and one is blue. These are the snuggest cases, and its a challenge to get the phone in, even without the tpu case. The plastic material the cases are made of is very tacky on the inside, so the phone tends to get stuck when you put it in or take it out. The plastic also seems thinner on these than the other cases, and the seals around the edge don't seem very reliable. Once the phone is in though, it's the most compact and pocketable of all of the cases. These cases do not have a clear window on both sides, so if you want to use the camera, then the phone screen will be covered by the translucent side of the case. It's not too bad, and the screen is still visible, but in bright situations, this could be an issue. Having said that, screen responsiveness is very good with these cases, most likely due to the thinness of the plastic. Lanyard goes through hole in the case and seems strong enough. These also come with an arm band that may fit you if you have the arms of a small child. They're really, really small.
Final thoughts - All of these would probably do a good job to keep water and moisture off of the phone (or even sand if you're going to the beach), and I think any of them would be fine to protect against accidental splashing. If I was going diving or swimming with my phone, I would probably shell out the extra cash for the overboard, or at least do some serious waterproof testing on these first. As it stands, I think I'll end up using the first case - Not too crazy about the blue, but I think it will do the best job of keeping the phone dry, and I won't need to worry about going down the log flume with it in my pocket or around my neck (like a tourist, lol).
Hey man, thanks for the reviews. I didn't even know you could get waterproof cases/bags so cheap.
I'll have to pick one up now.
I do suggest you update the prices in your post to include the shipping though for a better cost comparison (even though the difference here is minimal). So many venders inflate the shipping to make up the difference for a $0.01 item.
p.s. I'm going to pick up the first one as well since it looks like I can easily have it in my pocket as a just in case. (I'm in Florida and we have crazy torrential thunderstorms out of no where, so if I'm out jogging, I can have it in my pocket just in case.
Though expensive, Lifeproof cases are really nice. Ive known many people to go out in the ocean and take pictures under water with them.
Just an update, I did end up using that first case, and although it never went underwater, it got splashed on alot. Phone stayed dry, it fit great in the bathing suit pocket, and even took some great pics through the case. Would definitely recommend.
Quick update from me too. I ended up ordering this case: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058NXWPY/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00
Used on a canoe trip. The canoe flipped and it went underwater for around a minute or so, and air dried after, did a great job. Would recommend this one!
i am using the first case, blue, as well. Works fine, keeps my phone dry in a 10ft deep pool. Takes picture fine too. Thanks for the review OP.
I actually prefer these right here. They come in different sizes I prefer the 6-1/2 x 3-1/4I can't confirm they work in 100 ft of water because I have no reason to be that deep ever in my life, but for the average rainy day, screwing around by the pool or working out these work great. The best part is the patented purple zip technology that lets you visibly confirm the case is sealed. Also pics turn out great. Good luck in your decision

Phone twists in pocket! Beware!

Guys...
I've had my C6802 for a week now. I've been loving it, and I didn't understand why people are dissing it about pocket ability. It fits in my pants pocket just fine. I just make sure that the left front pocket is reserved for the phone alone, no keys, change, or any other scratcher. Breast pocket is just disaster waiting to happen - button down flap can't even come over the phone. So that's out.
Today I sat down at the restaurant to use the Wi-Fi on my laptop, and I hooked up the XZU to download a movie through Media Go. I noticed the phone rocking back and forth diagonally, not laying flat on the table top. I thought maybe the table is sloping on that side. So, I moved the phone to another spot; same thing. I picked up the phone and eyeballed it along its profile! Alas! It was bent!
I remembered...... Aluminum frame..... so I flexed it diagonally to fix it, and it straightened out!
So be warned folks! Even if it fits in your pocket, sitting down with the phone in the pocket will definitely bend it! This might even lead to the glass corners popping out!
Oh, that's.. bad I usually put my phone on the table no matter what, but i'll keep this in the back of my head. Thanks for sharing.

I do set the phone on the table too. I believe I twisted it sitting in the car from the house to the restaurant. It was a short drive; 2 blocks. So I didn't think much of it.
post a youtube video or pics to let us see, as this is sorta scary and might become usual as if this happens to more than yourself at least we can all tell sony support its a common fault
yup, there was a thread somewhere, someone asking how much it costs to replace the screen/digitizer because the screen cracked when he sat on it while ZU in the back pocket.
Gotta be careful...

I wonder, from what point it stops being a faulty design... I mean, not all of us are made the same. If a 200kg (about 400lbs?) guy sat on it at the wrong angle, I would not blame Sony at all... A steel sheet 5mm thick will bend under those kinda weight...

Even if someone of 40 kg would sit on it while on the rear pocket I would not blame Sony. If I remember well you are living in Vietnam, I have the phone everyday on my front pocket and drive scooter but my phone is still perfectly flat.
I do not put it on any too tide jean, and as soon as i sit completely on a car or chair I do remove it before sit. If not it is on a bag. So scare to break it, after all this phone is so thin and have so large and thin glass on it. I had to change iPhone glass of people siting on there sofa, same thing can happen here.

BINGO. This was my only concern regarding the Ultra from day one. I even wrote about it hear. I don't think you are the first to do this and you wont be the last either. Point is how do you know the integrity of the water resistance has not now been comprised? You don't!
I love the Ultra BUT putting that beast in a pocket was simply asking for eventual trouble. As you wrote how could an aluminium frame that dimension prevent twisting?
Sorry you had to experience this.
Regards.

With great respect to you Sir this is not a Sony 'problem'. THE 'problem' with the Ultra is portability. Woman can use hand bags men will try and use trousers. The Ultra is simply to large for general trouser use. Add to this the materials used, glass, plastics and Aluminium and what can we expect? Even titanium at that thinness will eventually flex. This, to me, is a classic example of a device defeating its own purpose.
I love the Ultra I love my Z and 10.1 Z tablet. I have gone back to the plastic smaller world of the new Note 3 as I know I just could not live with the portability problems with the beautiful Ultra.
There are only two tragedies in life. One is NOT having what we want the other is having it.
This will solve itself as long as you live in a temperate climate with seasonal change. What i'm trying to say is: Winter is coming, and we will use jackets/coats which will make our lives much simpler. To the people of SE Asia, Africa, Australia, Southern Europe and Southern USA, i'm very sorry

I personally keep it in my jacket pocket or in the jeans pocket, and sometimes they are really tight, and 80% of the time the ZU pops out a few inches from them, but my phone is still perfect.
On the other hand I think that aluminum bending on this device would be so limited that you can't even find out: phone is resting (face or back) on glass.
In no part the aluminum touches the table.
And even if you do manage to bend your device, I think it would have been much more than keeping it in a pocket. It would be all misaligned from angle to angle, at the point that the glass would break for the force pressing every time you lay it flat or you use it.
I wouldn't mind seeing pics too before saying any more things.

Guys, any phone will do this. I am sorry that the OP experienced damage, but if anything it's the fault of the larger dimensions of the phone, not its thinness. Think about it: what constitutes the vast majority of a phone's thickness? It's the internal volume, obviously. It's the internal volume that was reduced in order to make the phone thin, not the thickness of the frame or glass sheets. Those would be the same regardless of how thick or thin the phone as, as they're just "caps." The fact that the phone is longer and wider than usual will allow you to exert more torque on the frame because of leverage, but the frame itself is no weaker than any other phone, and probably stronger than many.
Just put a lanyard on it and hang it on your neck...
Worry about it being stolen while hanging infront of your chest? Then place it under your shirt!

Yeah, I am very careful about pick-pocketers in Hanoi, so I try not to put it in my back pocket anyway
It fits my front pocket fine, but I find it a bit hard to get it out while riding my bike, find it harder to answer it one-handed, and even more difficult to put it back into the front pocket while riding the bike. Depending on other things I have in front pocket, I have to stand on my bike while riding to put it back into the pocket.
(for those of you who don't know Vietnam, it must sound crazy )
Can't wait until winter so that I can use my inside jacket pocket.
And back to topic, I agree with most posts so far.
It is about portability problem, not design or manu quality problem. Applying torque on something so wide, long and thin must be avoided.
MY HUNT FOR THE PERFECT MAN-BAG NEEDS TO BE STEPPED UP A GEAR.
Guys.
There is nothing wrong with the phone. Nothing wrong with the build quality, or the frame, construction... none of that!
The phone fits in pants pocket. I use the front pocket. If you do carry it in your front pants pocket, be aware that sitting down with the phone in your front pocket will place torque on the phone, twisting it. My phone was NOT twisted enough to even consider it damaged. I just noticed that it wasn't perfectly flat when I placed it on the table. I twisted it back and corrected it.
After that little incident, I now make sure that I take it out of my pocket when I get in the car, or sit down. So, guys, becareful.
I have been using this gear keeper. The retention force is a bit strong, but very solid. I also have a larger sunglasses cloth bag to keep it protected till a case arrives. Interesting indeed. Your reply would have been just as fitting in the post I opened under accessories section about how people carry their ZU :good:
Do you keep the phone dangling on you, or into a pocket while it is like it's on a lanyard and pull it when needed, or do you attach it to a bag of some kind and keep it in there??
I can see it being used in a million different ways... How do you use it?

Two: several people asked you for pics, and you posted none. If you had time to open a topic about it, you sure have some to take 2 simple pics to prove what you're saying.
That said, until you do post some pictures, I call BS on the whole "the ZU bends if kept in pockets" argument.

Pictures of what? My twisted phone? I am not twisting my phone again just to provide you with pictures.
My phone got twisted, I corrected it, and I advised other pocketers to be careful. There's no evidence to be had. You obviously read only my original post, and omitted the one on page 2.
I use it for safety mostly. If I am at work the phone stays in my pocket(front or back) while attached. When sitting down it might rest in my lap depending on the meeting or I unsnap(the clip mechanism is really-too stiff) it and set it on the table or my desk. I might leave it dangling when tieing my shoes.
I had it in a jeans pocket while riding a motorcycle for less than a mile., and I have <1/2 millimeter play or travel on a flat table. Lanyard to front camera diagonal is fine, but headphone jack to opposite corner wiggles a little. I haven't tried unbending it. I could try to take a photo, but there likely wouldn't be much to see.

[Q] odd question. how to carry phone if no pockets?

if i wear my jeans then the phone kinda fits but i get poor bluetooth signal so that's not an option. i'd be wearing a tshirt so no pockets.
short of holding the phone in my hand, how else can i carry it with me? anything that lets you hang it around your neck?

i never have wifi on. i use LTE everywhere mate
Do you wear a belt?
Pleather Belt Holster for Xperia Z Ultra <Amazon US>
I cannot find it @ Amazon UK, but they're belt loop cases for the XZU are available now.
BTW I wouldn't be putting my XZU in anything as tight as jeans (no matter how loose fit they are, they are still a tighter fit than regular cotton trousers) as many people here have reported cracking the glass due to flexing whilst in their pockets.
Edit: Found some more if you can trust the site and can bare the wait.
Search on AliExpress for 'XL39h Belt' in Cell phone cases
i dont normally, it either goes in my coat pocket or my work shirt but on hot days where i wear jeans and a tshirt there's no other option really.
problem with belt holsters etc is fitting if you have a battery case like i do.
short of somehow carrying it on a lanyard or something i'm not sure how else to carry this thing. the jeans pocket are fine, it's just that for some reason the bluetooth sucks at that point
People I don't have this yet but been researching heavily for weeks literally which normally mean I will have this beast before soon. Now to a dress your issue it's the size of a small tablet so carry it as such I'm sure they have carrying cases for 7 inch tablets . Also pair it with an Android wear watch of choice and a stereo Bluetooth headset your all set to go. I I ha e a note 3 which most think is huge. But lives in my pocket . But this won't be going I'm my jeans pockets I they too tight for my keys even lol.

what?

Who uses a lanyard?

I ordered a black wrist lanyard to put on the phone. I did not have a lot of choice because they are very difficult to find in this country.
The lanyard seems so sensible to me! We put them on expensive camera's. Why not on expensive smartphones?
I cracked the screen of my GS3 and I am still furious at myself. My 2.5 yo phone which still has resale value is now worthless.
If I drop it with the lanyard on my wrist at least it will not go sailing to the floor or get lost at a concert.
Do you use a lanyard? What style do you have?
I am using the only one I've had for years. It is the one that comes with a sony pocketstation. It's been living on my psp for many years and now it's on my z3
I really wish they made a wrist strap or neck strap with the xperia logo on it.

I used one with the Z3 for about a day with it hanging from my neck. It was going everywhere swinging and getting dipped in the sink so i got rid of it. Plus, I regularly use cases and I change them to freshen up the look but with the lanyard on, it was not possible anymore. So lanyard had to go. Still have but I do't use it no more.
I have used it with a phone in this fashion before, round my neck. Coincidentally it was the Sony w890 and a slick small device it was http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_w890-3d-spin-2172.php
it was on a shorter lead so it wasn't so bad as swinging the giant z3, made of glass.
I use this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Deff-Carbon..._Cell_Phone_Straps_Charms&hash=item3387cef356
Pretty much a lanyard, but it has a ring you slip into your finger instead. I've gotten use to it to the point where I slip my finger in automatically.

Carrying around

Hey guys, I'm coming from a galaxy note 4. I have used an 8 inch tablet as a phone before, a galaxy tab, but I wore a jacket most of the time then so it wasn't an issue. Those of you using it as a tablet can just throw it in a bag but those of you who use it as a phone, how do you carry it around. If like me you wear a jacket, what do you do during the summer? Do you just carry it everywhere in your hand? Does anyone put it in their pants pocket?
I can't see it fit in my clothes, and I'm a pretty solid guy. But I must ask, why would you use it as a phone?
One device instead of 2...

Back pocket for me. About 1/3 of the phone sticks out though.

If I ever used a tablet that can double as a phone, you're only going to see me mainly use my bluetooth headset as means of making and receiving calls.
Slight issue is, I'm having a bit of problems trying to use the manufacturer warranty on my SBH50 headset because the display died out for no reason. I show the Sony rep that I have my proof of purchase from Paypal, but they need a receipt or something. What the hell? >_>
I carry it in my front pants' pockets. It fits okay.

always taking the elevator?
I use the Note 8 as my primary phone. It's a little large, but my wardrobe includes cargo pants and shorts, and it fits in those pockets.

Gotta try wearing regular sized trousers....
i usually have it in my messenger bag. also got a smartwatch. using an 8 inch tablet as your phone IS a use case for those things
also teaches me to ween myself off the phone teat. no bag, no phone. very... liberating.
other than that it's either the built in speaker or BT. i don't make or receive a lot of calls so this works for me. also got an old, banged up nexus s for when the tablet better stays at home.
