[Q] Android bluetooth in-call dropout issues - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been having issues with bluetooth headset dropout during a call. Pairing is never an issue, and the bluetooth connection is solid outside of a call, but during a call the bluetooth may drop out without warning. This means that while I'm talking to someone, there is no audible noise or visual cue that the connection has dropped and has defaulted back to the phone, and thus I'm relegated to a "hello? hello?" query before I check the handset and find out the caller was asking the same thing to my pocket (which also shows the devices are never more than, say 1.5m apart maximum when this happens). As far as the phone is concerned, it's still 'connected' to bluetooth, as indicated in the dialer, and somehow isn't aware the connection has been dropped (or is and isn't showing). I thus need to redirect the audio via the UI either to the handset or speakerphone (away from the bluetooth connection it still think it's on), wait for the reroute to register, then redirect once again to the bluetooth to reestablish the connection. Again, without any audio cues the caller magically appears again on the headset, and we play the whole dropout game all over again. Connection duration seems arbitrary, lasting anywhere from 10s to a tens of minutes (with a 2-3 minutes on average).
This isn't isolated to any particular hardware, as I have had this occur on every one of my phones (Nexus S @ Android 3.x, stock and custom; Meizu MX @ Android 3.x - 4.x AOSP, OEM stock, and custom; HTC One @ Android 4.2.x - 4.3, stock only) and across all the headsets I've tried (Plantronics Discovery 925, LG HBM-585, Motorola H790), with Android being the common denominator. Note, I have used a Plantronics Discovery 655 and the same Plantronics Discovery 925 headset on my Nokia 8800 in the yesteryears, and have NEVER had connection or dropout issues.
Is this a known and/or ongoing issue, or is there already a fix for it? I haven't found anyone else with the exact same symptoms I've got, but seeing as the sample spectrum is so wide I'd be surprised if there weren't.

same issues
i have the same issues with my SGS3 and plantronics bluetooth headset... I'm thinking an app is the problem, but I didn't find it yet....

It seems to happen less frequently now between my HTC One and the LG headset, perhaps due to Android updates if it indeed is an underlying problem within Android itself, but it still happens from time to time. With such a wide spectrum, however, I certainly expected many more people to have experienced this problem, instead of it being an isolated problem (if it is, I don't see the connection between the hardware).
Would love someone more knowledgeable on this case (or perhaps on Bluetooth connection continuity in general) to chime in.

If paired to two "headsets" how2give preference to one?

I have two bluetooth devices that look like headsets to my (CDMA)Hero -- an AT&T cordless phone that pretends to be a headset and treats it like a second landline (ie, I can make outgoing calls, and answer incoming calls, using any of the cordless phone's handsets), and Ford SYNC (which also appears to be a bluetooth headset and integrates it with the car stereo for handsfree use while driving).
The problem is, SYNC doesn't "turn off" when the car is off -- not even when the car is off and the alarm is on. It's *always* active, and always trying to be the Hero's metaphorical object of desire. Worse, it seems to have a more powerful radio and/or better antenna than the AT&T cordless phone, and fights with it constantly for the phone's attention.
This isn't a new problem... it happened all the time with my Vogue/Touch/PPC6900, but back then I didn't know what the root of the problem was. I just knew that my phone seemed to flake out a few times a week, and I'd get incoming calls that couldn't be answered with the cordless phone handsets. Since the Hero helpfully "makes Toast" and alerts me every time there's a handoff, I quickly discovered the problem's root. Now, I'm just trying to find a solution to it.
Just to give you an idea of how bad it is, my car is about 25 feet from my kitchen (where the AT&T cordless phone's base is), on the other side of a concrete wall and two drywall walls... and it *still* occasionally manages to grab possession of the phone away from the AT&T cordless phone.
So... is there some way to tell the phone, "If you see both SYNC and the AT&T cordless phone, ignore SYNC and pair with the phone... in fact, just ignore SYNC entirely if you've seen the AT&T cordless phone within the past 30-60 seconds"? Or, failing that, is the Hero's bluetooth pairing behavior governed by something that can be overridden by a program of my own -- say, an event handler that wedges itself into the bluetooth event chain and prevents the Hero from ever hearing SYNC's mating call if it's currently connected to the AT&T base? Where in the API would I even *look* for something like this?

Crap Bluetooth?

I purchased mine yesterday. Once the WOW effect wore off, came the disappointments..
The bluetooth is terrible. Lots of static in my Plantronics Voyager Pro, and also it pairs with my Nissan BT handsfree, but only connects the first time, afterwards its not possible to connect to it anymore.
Flashed to the latest KE7, factory reset, did not help at all.
How can such an expensive phone be like this? Bluetooth is one of the most important features in a phone...
I have the same pairing issue like you. DonĀ“t get my Sony Bluetooth headset to work. Tested it with two devices.
I have car bt xplode System and i never had it so good. Always connects. It does skip if wifi is on though. I had the same issue with gs1.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Happily mine works nice, with SonyEricsson a2dp stereo headset, Belkin a2dp receiver, a nokia handsfree (not sure about the model), the file transfer is faaaaaast
It has paired everything I used it with and no problems so far.
The sound is even better than it is via my retired iphone.
does anyone tried working with SE LIVEVIEW.
My N1 had truble, and looking forword to SGS2 and don't know yet if it is OK.
Also have problem with a Plantronic Discovery 975. Statics and stuttering sound. No problem pairing though and it is the same (bad) sound quality if I'm near or 5 m away.
I'm on KE7 firmware.
Wow, should this be added to the official bug list?
For me, bluetooth intermittently skips if wifi is turned on. Once I turn wifi off, its crystal clear. This has happened on all my different bluetooth headsets so if other are experiencing the same thing, I think this is definitely an "official bug".
Mine skips, and randomly drops connection to my JVC car stereo requiring a reboot. Back and forward buttons don't work reliably either.
Anyone who says theirs is clear is wrong. They just don't have an ear for decent sound quality. The bitpool on every Android phone (including Cyanogen) is horribly low and it really shows in the mid-high tones (ie hi-hats). No-ones is different.
Worst of all, sometimes if I get out of my car, I'll get a 'hot' leg where the device is overheating from the bluetooth going nuts. I feel like it's damaging my SGS2.
Yapp, can confirm that turning of wifi stopped the stuttering. Sound isn't great but probably usable. Defenitly a bug?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Any progress on this yet? Mine drops the sound quite a lot. Remains connected but just no sound and does this about every 15 minutes, requiring bluetooth to be turned on and off.
First let me start off by saying, my bluetooth pairs well with my Motorola S7HD and the sound to ME is DECENT until you put it in your pocket and from there it gets "staticky" somewhat but not too bad.
As for the car, I have to manually pair the phone to the car stereo every time. Sometimes it would connect it to automatically. The sound to MOST of us in the car is fine. Keep in mind most of us aren't audiophiles. If it plays well, understandable, and without any static, it's a ok in my book.
The suckerpunch is that sometimes the bluetooth would drop connection now and then. I need to do a restart on the phone to get it flowing again. Meh.
If anyone finds a fix, please tell
i also get crappy sound quality, but whats worse is, that neither the mic nor the earplugs work on my BT headset when i try to answer a call! (sony ericsson mw600 headset)
only when i pause the call and resume it, the headset works!
did anyone experienced this?
solved it by disabling wifi....seems to be a common android issue
Any progress on this issue?
E.g. does 2.3.4 improve?
Hi @all,
I noticed a (bluetooth) headset issue while calling (not only in this rom, even in all roms i have tested): when wifi is on, crack sounds make every call inaudible.
It happens with plantronics voyager 520 and BMW professional (2011) car kit.
I can't believe having the best phone with such an error.
Suspending wifi, stops the crack sounds, but the quality of headset calls is much worse than with my "old" SGS1.
I use my phone two hours a day for calling. I'm not amused about this fact.
Other surveillances?

New Wifi/Bluetooth interference

Hi,
For about a year I have used my GS2 with a Plantronics Savi Go bluetooth headset - I normally leave the phone in its desk cradle and use MyPhoneExplorer to make/answer all my calls and send text messages (I work in a small office with no wired phone at my desk and I sent at least 500 texts/day to coordinate teams working in the field.)
Recently - after returning from a trip - I noticed that the phone and headset would not work together at all if the wifi on the phone was enabled - the headset would connect to the phone and the first 10 seconds or so of every call would be OK, but the level of interference (as heard on the headset) would increase and increase and the headset would inevitably disconnect after about 20 seconds.
With wifi disabled on the phone this does not occur.
The headset works fine with another phone and also connects fine to its Plantronics USB adapter. This headset is designed to remain connected to two devices at once (intended to be the USB adapter and a phone) so you can make calls from either Skype/a voip app or your phone without having to change anything.
I have dropped the phone about a hundred times so I changed the aerial/loudspeaker module (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300715915473) but the interference still occurs.
Is there any way this could be a software issue? I hate updating as I have custom density and all sorts of other settings so my phone is still on the same android 2.3.3 stock ROM that it came with - I have also removed all the Samsung customisations and KIES etc so updating is a pain.
My opinion is that there is no way this could be a software issue and that, as the antenna replacement has not solved the problem, there's probably a hardware problem and I should just toss it and get a Note or another GS2.
However, thinking about it more - the bluetooth and wifi transmitters share the same antenna? Is there any software cooperation to make sure these devices don't try and transmit at the same time or is there hardware gating? Are there filters designed to stop the bluetooth transmitter transmitting directly 'into' the wifi receiver (as they both share the same aerial which is used both for transmit/receive) and are they software or hardware?
My thoughts are definitely hardware but I would welcome the opinions of anyone that really knows how the two transmitters/receivers are meant to work together.
Thanks!

Z5 Compact Blueooth disconnection

Hi all,
i use my Z5 Compact for tracking my run with an Android Wear device (LG G Watch R)
I have several problems with Bluetooth. It works for some secs, then crash. After a min re-start works and reconnect....and so on..
When i use a cardio strip also the hr disconnects.
This is a video of the problem:
youtube. com/watch?v=YgA45nP8Nk4
Can you help me? I'v yet Hard reset it 3 times.
Thanks to all
I cannot offer help unfortunately but I am seeing similar things. And I am starting to think (hope, even) it is software.
My Jawbone UP3 disconnects continually and getting a reconnection is very hard, often involving a band reboot. I also have 4 TrackR tags which are randomly but frequently showing a re-paired message (smart lock device) in the status bar for no reason at all.
I've a Pebble Time but that has not been connected too much and seems ok, equally my Jawbone Jambox and MDR-XB950BT Sony headphones have been working without issue.
Possibly then it is only Bluetooth LE that is an issue (your fitness tracker would be that) and the three working devices are regular BT connections.
With luck this is something then that a firmware update will address. I hope so, because I'm bloody sick of buying broken hardware.
I use Bluetooth at various times throughout the day. I've never had a single problem with it! I am communicating with cars and obd2 systems though not low powered items like watches and headphones. Fwiw I'm on .152 firmware.
I am having massive Bluetooth Low Energy issues, I came to post about it but will do so here.
I have the E5823 unlocked in White. Android 6.0 although this started with 5.1. 32.1.A.1.163.
Basically I am concluding BLE is totally screwed on this phone, and I was about to send it back but realise the number of other BT issues people are having means it is likely not hardware on this one unit so perhaps software resolvable.
Jawbone UP3 loses connection continually, it occasionally connects and syncs, but I cannot force this.
TrackR Bravo tags work on occasion, frequently disconnected and randomly 're-pair' to the phone with no interaction (new BT device notification all the time)
Tile same thing.
Parrot Minidrone cannot be seen by the phone most of the time, it works on occasion.
All these devices are Bluetooth Low Energy. On the other side I have a Jawbone Jambox, Sony MDR-XB950BT headphones and Onkyo-NR626 Amplifier with regular old Bluetooth and all of these work, A2DP, atpX.
The only difference I noticed with 6.0 vs 5.1 is that TrackR can now tell the range by signal strength, something that always worked on the LG G4 Android 5.1 and 6.0. So I think the z5c started with issues and has not exactly improved.
Saying this there are known bugs in Android 6.0 and BLE, solved in 6.0.1. But right now I am super angry that yet another phone I buy is broken out the box. It never ends.
had BT issues, using a smartwatch (LG W100 G Watch).. but it was more frequent when used in combo with other accessories.
updating and restoring to MM 6.0 solved any issue.. so i managed to get well working, at the same time, smartwatch, cardio band, earphones and cadence/speed sensor (for bike).. all using BT LE..
before restoring and updating i got disconnections and glitchy music

Anybody having Bluetooth issues with the G5?

So I've had my G5 less than a week now and really like the phone. But I'm starting to notice some Bluetooth issues. I have an unreasonable number of Bluetooth earpieces and headsets, and have started noticing problems with all of them with the new phone. From very poor sound quality to the connection being dropped while the phone is in my hand or my pocket. I've had the headsets a long time, the phone is the new variable in the equation. And I'm having some degree of trouble with all my headsets, which leads me to believe there's a phone issue. Anybody else experiencing anything like this? Not sure if it might be a defective phone, or if it's a G5 problem. Anybody?
I don't have any of those issues, sound quality shouldn't be the bluetooth issue.
The only issue I have is the range. covering the phone with a hand in a pocket might make the headphones stutter.
Some people are experiencing those types of issues if a factory reset doesn't solve it i suggest you get it exchanged for a new one i for one am not experiencing any of the launch issues

Perhaps "sound quality" was a poor choice of words on my part. I start getting a garbled 'sproingey' (sorry, don't know how to explain it better) condition, where I actually had to take it off Bluetooth, as I couldn't carry on a conversation. Never had any such problems with my G2 with same headsets, so this is all new. I hate to think I need to do a hard reset on a phone I've had less than a week to resolve such a problem. I hope being a relatively early adopter hasn't set me up for a pack of teething problems. So you say others have been experiencing similar problems?

Yeah some have had reported problems with the Bluetooth audio being garbled or the headphone jack crackling, i haven't experienced any of the issues so far, this launch has been riddled with faulty devices it seems, there is even a thread on reditt that shows stuff to check before walking out the store

That's what I like to call a good sign of a bad sign.
I have the problem, that sometimes/often the when the phone connects to my crar radio, it only connects as phone and is not able to stream music. When I disconnect and connect again, everythings fine.
Strange
The issue I'm having is with my Tracks AIR headphones. I have to unpair them and repair them every time I connect them. And usually every three or four days I have to reboot my Moto 360 to get it to reconnect to my G5. Did not have any of these problems on my s6e. It's a pain in the ass more than anything, not enough for me to take the phone back.
I have an ATT G5 from launch day... My jaybird ear buds work just fine and quality is good, and it pairs with my LG sound bar and woofer in my living room with no problems. My sons small Mossy oak BT speaker pairs and sounds just fine also.
Now beyond that I can't comment. I haven't used my ear buds on a call yet bc I don't like talking through them in general lol.

I had issues with my Bluetooth where it suddenly shows "Bluetooth has stopped working." and have to force close it, and it will reactivate the bluetooth. Have no idea what is causing that to happen, other than that no quality issues on my side.
I have lg hbs 730 connection is bad can't be more then 10feet away in straight line never had that issues with g4

LG G5 Bluetooh Issues
My issues are likely the receiver, as my LG G5 will connect to my Nissan Versa Bluetooth (phone only) without issues.
I have a USB Bluetooth dongle with a 3.5mm jack to my Versa AUX jack. My LG G5 will always connect to the USB BT device automatically, just no audio at all. If I have music playing when I attempt to connect, the phone goes silent, but the audio does not get sent over to the BT receiver. So, I must go into Bluetooth settings, disconnect then reconnect that device. This happens every time, and the re-connect method always solves the audio issue.
PITA, but I'm going to purchase another receiver and see if that solves my issues.

Don't know if this has to do with the phone or with the Android version, seem to have the same with the Nexus 5 (2013) on Android 6.0.1

Any difference with BT if wifi is on vs off ?
made me think of this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/help/wifi-cuts-bluetooth-t3362158
I can't answer that, but it's a moot point now. I took the phone back and had them replace it. No problems so far with the new one, although it's not been thoroughly tested yet with all three of my BT headsets. But so far, so good.
Bluetooth is ok about connection here but not the sound (BOSE Soundlink Soundspeaker). Sometimes, the sound is like leveling up or such... hard to explain, it goes higher (not volume but the notes are higher) and it's very annoying. That's not the first phone who is doing that but my last phone (Xperia Z3 Compact) didn't have this issue at all.
I think I'm having the exact same issues as many here, LG G5 (LG-H3831, only diff I see is the Canadian has lot's of frequencies for LTE-A)
I have a 2008 Versa, Hands Free connects, every time I start the car.
I have a bluetooth dongle for my audio, it connects EVERY time, but I start the car, but no audio. I 'must' always go into Bluetooth settings, disconnect, and reconnect, and press PLAY immediately, else if I wait too long, audio Apps will 'play', just no sound, not on phone, not on Blue-tooth.
This is really irritating, as I have 3 different blue-tooth devices, and all three are the same. If I don't press play/get any audio going right away it'll it'll connect, but no audio until do the disconnect/re-connect. PITA
My issue is phone call volume is so low...

I have a problem with the BT phone audio momentarily being dropped while on a call with my car built in BT. I will lose the call audio and the radio (which shuts off during a call) will come back for 5 or 10 seconds. The call does not drop and the call audio comes back afterward.
I really like the G5. Yesterday was my last day with the Tmo "buyers remorse" so I am having them send me another one. I hate to switch it out because I have none of the build problems some are reporting- no light bleed, audio and audio jack are good, good alignment of phone body with module.
Anyone else have this issue?
