[Q] Kit Kat or Stock!? - G2 General

Right, can you lot help me please.
I have a G2. It's awesome. I've rooted and flashed every android phone ive had. But is there any real reason to jump from stock LG to 4.4 in a rush?
I'd be loosing my quickwindow functionality, the knock on feature (Which i love and know has been implemented in other kernels), my awesome LG lockscreen...and the time i've spent customising.
I'd be gaining, probably a bit of speed, a bit of battery and HDR+ pics (sounds good to me) and possibly the new google now feature (if the screen is on).
The benifits sound good, but speed isnt an issue on the G2, battery isn't...so is it worth jumping from LG stock to an AOSP or similar?
Have I missed anything?
Thanks.

Knock on is working on the AOSP roms. and if you want Knock off you can just use nova launcher combined with the screen off app. That solves that problem lol.

Yeh and 4.4 deals with bigger screen better by hiding the nav bar more often. That's cool. I don't like Pie so it matters to me

No, CM is just clean Android. It is up to you whether you want that or not. I am really glad with CM running on my LG G2 (802). Really hate the LG bloatware (just like those apps delivered with Samsung phones ).

Oh yeh, cool, so i'd loose all the bloat and reclaim some of my storage.
But I may also loose IR initially, even though 4.4 supports it..it may take some fixing. But I don't use it anyway...hm..

Well, your LG ROM is about 1,5 GB, right? The CM ROMs are little over 220 MB. So that alone could be a reason to switch

I don't think stock is soo bad on this phone. If you're rooted you can remove the unnecessary apps that you don't use plus hide the nav bar until you choose to make it visible. I currently have the entire screen available on my G2 and love it.

Yeh that's true, but then i'd have to flash google apps too...and root my phone. It's all too hard. I'm going to sleep on it and read in the morning. Likely i've got a good few days before the ROMs anyways.

Yeah, I can deal with pie but it's just too slow versus stock nav bars. When I play games however is the only time I activate PIE and hide the nav buttons, even though I'm using smaller than stock nav bars lol. Most of the time videos play full screen anyway.

Whats up with the notification bar?

I have no clue why or who ever in Samsung development messed this up, but when you stream flash videos in full screen the notification does not auto hide. To me this is completely unacceptable as it ruins the possibility of "full screen" and it can actually damage the oled in these phones.
I think this fix should be a MUST for any developer currently making rooms for this phone. The only from currently that I know of that fixes it is Cyanogen.. but I do want a stable ICS and oh boy can't we all dream of a perfect aosp from... dreams of super fast clean friendly user experience...

And you feel that you can issue demands to the devs because...?? Why are you so special?
Why be a dev if your goal is half ass roms? The only thing I'm wondering is why has this not been addressed by the community? Why is this still "OK" and why are trolls immediately the only ones present in this forum?
There's a Q&A for ya..
Its funny how you think my suggestion is un warranted. I just desperately want to ruin my phone with burn in right?
It's not your suggestion, it's your attitude.

AS said above, it looks like your are running ICS which is in beta and has not been officially released, you are complaining about an unfinished, unofficially released BETA rom.
You may need some time of reflection and a lot of reading to understand what you are doing......
Why be a dev if your goal is half ass roms?
You answer your question yourself why build a rom based on a half assed buggy beta release .
Put in a very simple way . Why waste time on a buggy beta build that may be very different come release day .
When ICS is released and if a dev thinks its worth fixing your problem i am sure they will .
jje
OK it sounds like no one understood , I will attempt to explain this better. This is NOT an ICS problem this problem is with EVERY rom including stock update strait from Kies. I went as far as contacting Samsung to get a fix, but as you can see in my profile I live in the US and the US Samsung will not help me with my UK phone. Why everything between us is so divided beats me but still the issue remains.
As I stated currently the only rom that fixes it is Cyanogen but just as JJ stated why use a buggy beta when the release will be much different/better. Also I am currently running ICS and have not encountered a single bug. Everything works perfect except for Samsung's stupid attempt to burn in my screen. I don't know about everyone else but I paid $580 for this phone and the last thing I want is a permanent" 3g" on my screen...

Then give us more information. Saying that streaming videos don't go full screen is no where near enough. What ROM, website, browser etc are you using because the last time I tried this (Not long after the S2 was released) it worked just fine. I tried a 720p video from megaupload and it went full screen just fine. Same with youtube/youtube app. Give more information, not attitude. Also, i'd wager than there is zero chance of your display burning in a 3G icon. Perhaps the full notification bar if you use MIUI/a white or light theme but I highly doubt the majority of people will experience any burn in, never mind such a small specific burn in.
Fair enough.. more info. I usually run completely stock and decided to play around with ics. A main site I stream with is twitch.TV (I am a big starcraft2 player and use the pro streams to get better) while I'm at work I watch for hours sometimes 7 hours straight. This WILL cause burn in.
When the problem occurs:
Watching ANY true flash video online(not YouTube app) while in full screen mode in any browser or Rom besides cyanogen.
If you don't believe me test it yourself. Go to twitch.TV pick a stream let the video load and click the full screen button. If you have a rom that the notification bar disappears let me know and you won't hear.me "moan" anymore.
Or maybe one of you super nice Brits can call UK Samsung and get an official fix. The number is 08702420303.

Download the diff, check for relevant changes (there's not many for fullscreen) and mod your own browser. Before you ask, I'm not going to hold your hand on this one, and am not willing to do it for you either (I don't use an ICS ROM).
Not asking for any hand holding or hand outs for that matter.. one last question can it be done completely from the phone?
Actually nvm that browser mod will not work with ics. Even states in that post "should be comparable with 2.3.x roms.

Sure it will, you just have to be willing to put in some work. Namely, as I already said, downloading the diff, checking for relevant changes (I think there's only two changes relating to full screen) and getting them into your Browser.apk. You're probably going to need to do some reading.
Judging by this part of your post:

[Q] How would you rate the different JB ROMs for SGSIII?

Hi
As the title says "How would you rate the different JB ROMs for SGSIII?"
Pros/Cons?
Which firmware is most stable at the moment? I have tried the last 6 but they keep getting worse. DLH9 was horrible.
I LOVE the Stock Samsung Camera App. Which ROMs does it work on?
A penny for your thoughts....

LI1 is by far the most stable, the others have issues, everything seems to be fine on this one
I just use AOSP ROM's, the speed and smoothness is unrivaled, it wipes the floor with normal TW ROM's, unfortunately there is still the memory leak issue but i think a solution to this will be found soon when all the necessary sources are released by Samsung, i actually don't really miss some Samsung features like i thought i would, speed, smoothness and excellent battery life does it for me and AOSP is the way to go IMO.
What camera app can compete with Samsungs own?

i would advice you to try the hypergalaxy 1.2.1 rom its small, BEST battery life so far from any rom ive used, (50% battery after 12 hours, 3 hours on screen) also its quite smooth and nimble but due to lots of bloatware being removed so you would need to download a few add-ons which is okay because they only take a few seconds! Also most of the other roms start to lag even though i clear cache and clear most ram being used a few times a day using titanium backup anways Go ahead and tell me your experience

^ LOL XD I am too. And I am sure Slaphead is too!
I have tried Android Revolution since 3.0.0. By now it has hit 8.0.0. It keeps "stuttering" and lagging for me. Gets worse as longer it is running. I did try Resurrection Remix. It was good until I got a release where it was horrible. Which prolly wasn't RR's fault.
Samsung Camera does not work on RRso that is why I switched. Also that the Samsung HX Mod didn't workas well. I have CameraZOOM Fx but it is lagging but that might be the ROMs fault. How is CZOOM Fx better? In what sense?
I am running NovaLauncher at the moment. Which makes it a little bit easier to flash and restore. But it stilla job to do with every switch of ROM. Isn't it?

List of ROMS that restore the Tablet UI

Whenever I'm finally able to get my hands on a N10, the first thing I'm going to do is root it and put on a custom ROM that gets rid of that ridiculous Phablet UI. For those of you who have been flashing ROMS on this device, what other ROMS besides Paranoid Android have successfully restored the original Tablet UI? It'd be handy to have a list here for others who are wondering the same thing. It's kind of hard to tell on some of them, especially if they are nightly-based ROMs, which usually don't include a changelog or list of features, and for some reason screenshots in the OP are always lacking.
Also, of the ones with the ability to switch the UI, which ones seem to be the most stable in tablet UI mode?

MaDoCo ROM
This ROM doesn't fully bring back the original UI, but does allow the user to move buttons to the left and right of the bar for easy reach. As you can see in the image below, certain buttons can be moved to whichever side of the screen you like. Mix and match them, or even move them all to the opposite side depending whether you're a lefty or a righty!
Aokp is my favourite ROM of all and had the option to enable tablet ui on their previous 4.1.2. builds. I expect them to implement the option on 4.2.1. soon, and I of course expect them to create builds for the nexus 10 too.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I don't see many ROMs supporting the soon-to-be-deprecated old tablet UI... and quite frankly, after using it a bit, the new UI is not bad at all...
I'm definitely keeping my eye out for an AOKP ROM for the N10. I used it on both my Galaxy Nexus and XOOM and it was one of my favorites (Currently, I'm using CNA, but that's about to change because he's way too unreliable, and his updates take longer than Verizon sometimes, which kind of defeats one of the purposes for using a custom ROM.)
And Craig, whatever floats your boat. My issue isn't necessarily with the fact that they are moving the UI around, my issue is with the fact that they are forcing change on people who prefer the old UI. Some of us realize how unique and efficient it is, and would like to have the choice to continue to use it.

Don't get me wrong... I understand that different people have different opinions and I'm not trying to force you to change your opinion... I merely stated that even though the old tablet UI still works with Android 4.2, it is no longer officially supported by Google and will likely be deprecated in a future release... so the number of ROMs supporting the old tablet UI will be considerably small... I just said give it a chance... that said, I leave it to you to make up your own mind!
AOKP is available for the Nexus 10, but it does not have the old tablet UI yet...

There is an unofficial port done for the N10 right here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2013361
Been running it for a few hours, and a few items are missing but nothing too major. They are working on getting those missing features back. I'm hoping the N10 because an officially supported device for the team.

Just to clarify, it's not a port... it's an unofficial build until it gets officially integrated...
Just my opinion , but I suggest people get used to the new UI , it is just like anything else, companies evolve , and not everyone likes it ..
Car companies change paint colors, dash packages, and options.
PC companies change cases, keyboards monitors and mice.
At some point you are just going to have to grow up and move on.
If a dev wants to build a ROM because he/she likes the old UI then that is awesome, but if it was me, the first person that begged for it, would make me NOT want to do it .
You could always learn to do it yourself ...
(and yes I do know how to do it myself, because I learned, not that I even want the old UI anymore)
personally i love the new ui
I liked Tablet UI mainly because I could see what time it was and access notifications from within fullscreen apps. But now that stuff is put on the top bar, which gets hidden on fullscreen apps.
Updated the OP to add MoDoCo ROM to the list. This ROM doesn't bring back the full UI, but gives the user control over specific softkey placement on the navigation bar, which is something Google should have done in the first place when they decided to change stuff up. The biggest complaint people have with the new UI is that the buttons you use the most are in the center of the screen away from the thumbs. Sucks for people like me who have short thumbs. The MoDoCo solution is perfectly acceptable for me and may even be preferred by left handed users. :good:
My ROM now has a mod to move the navi button to the left... still a mod zip until I learn to code it to be a configurable option!

Multi-window: LG as good as Samsung?

All,
I'm very close to upgrading from my rooted Verizon Note 3 to an LG V10. I'm not looking forward to losing root, and the free WiFi tethering that comes with it, but other than that, the V10 looks like a solid choice.
One thing I use a lot on my Note 3 is the ability to re-size a window. It's great when I'm driving, because I used desktop widgets to control my audio, so I shrink the navigation window, and have access to audio and navigation from one screen.
Is this possible on the V10? I've watched all of the demo and review videos on the phone, but nobody covers the multi-window functionality that I've seen.
Thanks.
Yes

Thanks for that. I had heard that there was a way to shrink a window for easier one handed use, but it blacks out everything being it. Here's a shot of how I usually drive around with my Note 3. The navigation window is small, and the home screen widgets are accessible to pause or skip tracks in both my music app and my podcast app.
Is there a way to shrink a window on the V10 and see the home screen, or other apps at the same time?
Thanks.
That's actually a bit better, but at least on The V10 is possible and you can still drag it to wherever you like. Only thing missing is any back ground. Might be better for battery life though.
really like my v10 coming from galaxy family with the last one being note4...
I only miss the little pen
It looks like there are some third party apps that enable resizing windows, and at least one of them doesn't require root. I'll probably just give that a try. Thanks guys.

You could keep the nav screen size as-is and use the 2nd screen to control media? The media controls on the 2nd screen are extremely simplistic but that might be all you need?
That sounds like a great idea.
Do the second screen media buttons work with third party media apps?

Works with PowerAmp
You can still use free wifi tethering with the FoxFi app. Costs a few dollars, but it works great.
tcrimsonk, I'm also coming from a rooted Note 3. And am also on the fence. Thanks for posting as you asked questions I had. Funny the little things you miss when you don't have root. Or other way around, the little things that Verizon "turns off" so they can sell you that function as a service. Like Call Block. And I like to not have any camera sound (or remember to turn the volume down).
I'm still not totally convinced to switch. The Note 3 is still working pretty good. But the V10 looks like a sweet upgrade. Was also considering the Nexus 6P.

I still haven't made the leap. I'm even looking for a way to pay cash for an unlocked V10, but it doesn't sound like any of them would work with Verizon's LTE. I don't trust T-Mobile's service in my area, and Sprint's 4G service was abysmal here for years, so there's no way I'm going back to them. The Nexus 6P on Google Fi seemed like a good option too, but I'm not ready to give up Verizon's network.
It's a shame really. I'm willing to pay Verizon's higher prices to use their better network. But why do they have to rub salt in the wound by locking down the devices, and packing them with bloatware?

Did some reading and there are a few guides but not sure what might be best for this new Pixel6.
Whilst I wait for the ability to use a Google-Free ROM, is there an app or script or list of apps/services to disable etc that would work i can follow?
I'm kinda wanting to have a play with this phone but don't want it updating itself or tracking me...

As of now there r no custom roms for pixel 6 so inorder to degoogle u would have to extract the g apps from the factory firmware and then flash it that way but I've never done that myself

IT would be best to wait for a custom ROM to sideload
Yeah,uhumm..Me too want a Google phone without Google apps.Yes,uhumm also i want a stable OS without bugs and good performance, good battery life too.But not the way Google make the phone, the chip and HIS operating system.no, no,no i want to archive this any other way possible. Then U see this dude coming back with "I don't know what's happening, I have a lot of bugs and a lot of app crashing. My system is unstable. I don't want this phone.Copy his user name and wait..
Here are the apps I froze. I could probably freeze more but it's a good start i'd say. I didn't sign in to any google account. It's not perfect but that's temporary, patiently waiting for custom ROMs too

Yep I guess we wait for the clean ROMS and such.
Thanks for sharing tomatot - I have done a bit of that already. Will check your list against mine

Sure, let me know if I missed any other app that seems important to freeze.
I don't know if any of you realize this, but p6/p6p have first class support in aosp. Take 15 minutes to read the instructions and build it from source yourself.
I'm running a self built aosp12r14 on my p6p right now and even typing this message from it.

It'd be nice if you'd share your build with the community. Is everything working including fingerprint scanner?

1) My build wouldn't help you. Like I said, its for p6p, not the basic-p6 in here.
2) 15 minutes of reading is all it takes to figure out how to build it yourself. The security risk of using something built by someone you don't know doesn't justify it.
3) couldn't tell you about fingerprint sensors, biometric security isn't protected by anti-self-incrimination laws, so I would never use and recommend that nobody ever use it. You should only use knowledge-based security.
I guess we are lazy? Or an underestimated minority?
I'm wondering why an AOSP build isn't available already from some kind person, or even a walk through with comments and experiences from someone already on this planet? Nothing on Youtube either.
Or is it so easy people do it quietly and assume it's common knowledge.
You know they make phones without Google installed on them, right? They are called iPhones and are pretty popular too.

You realize that those are 100% closed source and locked and completely and utterly useless?

Yes, which is why I use only Android phones.

You can enjoy Android without enjoying Google bloat/spyware you know...
I think they are just joking with the iPhone jib so no need to overreact all.
I read up on source.android.com and it all looks well documented yes. But.
400G of free HDD space, 60GB+ of source to download, overnight compiling....
I've not done it before, let alone testing on a brand new phone...plus with 2 kids and a puppy and not much sleep...
If your in your 20s and have a couple of Pixel phones and lots of free time - have a go and let us know your experiences creating a ROM. If it works on your P6, I'll try it on mine
Those many GB is not that much these days. Not like anyone is using 9600 bps dialup any more. And overnight compiles are not that bad, not like you really need to watch it. Set it to go and go to bed.
Or if you have a faster computer, just give it an hour.
But I do hear you on the kids and dog getting in the way. I have 3 kids under 10 and a dog. Oh, I'm an accountant.
It's funny that people use Android and try to De-Google their phone.
What is even more hilarious is buying a phone actually made by Google themselves and trying to De-Goolge that same device
