I'm looking to update from Android 4.0.4. My SGH i777 is rooted from last year.
I have the clockwork mod recovery installed from last year. Using AOKP I think.
There's ROM's for 4.3 but I don't see any kernels posted here. Can someone point me in the right direction? Apparently the sg2 has left the limelight for a while now.
Once I get the kernel updated, does anyone have any good ROMs to recommend?

Which rom is a personal matter. You should try them yourself to see what you like. If you want Samsung Touchwiz based firmware, the latest version will be 4.1.2. To get 4.2.2 or 4.3, you will have to go with one of the AOSP based roms.
Since you have a custom kernel with CWM Recovery, just pick the firmware you want to try and flash it in recovery. You don't need to install another kernel first.

firmware update? no. Whether 4.0.4 or 2.3.whatever, you already have have root/cwm; all that's left is a some recommended housecleaning*, then flash whatever ROM you want.
*either:
rom-cleaning-script
or:
factory reset
+format system

In my experience with custom ROMs, I found that ShoStock3 v4.0 and UCMD8 v2.2 COOKED give the best battery life and stability, but I use the stock kernel for ShoStock and AJK v4.9 for UCMD8 COOKED. CM/PA/AOKP have given me subpar results in terms of stability and, most importantly (for me anyway), battery life. This is not to say that those other ROMs are bad, but for me, those haven't been working out. Your mileage may vary. Just my $0.02.

So you're looking for a rom. The rom you use will all depend on the type of software you like. If you like touchwiz, I recommend Shostock 3 4.0 or the Cooked Rom. If you're looking for a AOKP Android 4.2.2 rom, then I would use the Resurrection Remix rom, but remember, all roms differ on every phone. Not everyone gets the same results. I wouldn't use a 4.3 rom because its fairly new and pretty unstable on some phones, but if you really want to, I got the best results on the Carbon rom, but the battery life wasn't so good. Also, a lot of the 4.2 and 4.3 roms require you to flash gapps, which are the google apps for you phone. If you're looking for kernels, the usually come with the rom you download, so you don't really need to get a kernel. If you really want the extra customization and tweaks, there are some kernels out there, including AJK, Jeboo, and STI, that you can flash. I personally use AJK on a lot of my roms because I found it to be the most sucessful. I am running Shostock 3 with jeboo kernal right now. Shostock 3 has good performance, stability, and battery life and is touchwiz. So yeah, keep all this in mind when flashing a kernal. You don't to connect your phone to the computer or anything to flash a kernel. If you're rooted, you just have to have the rom in your phone storage or SD card and go into clockworkmod recovery and flash. Hope this helps and good luck on finding a rom that's right for you!

I've been frequently checking the web for the official JB update and everything i've always have read is that it will be released soon, not OTA yet so I'm going a bit desperated about having JB on my s2. I'm actually on 4.0.4 official (yeah, the brick evil kernel) and I'm pretty happy with it but I'm very curious about all those 4.1.2 custom ROM's roaming around the net.
What's your advice for this ROM's? Are they worthy to install them at this point in my device? Are they fully working with all the JB functions? Or at this point should I wait for the official ROM and give chance the community to work in ROM's based on it?

Well regardless of what above poster says, no they are not fully working. However the bugs that are present are not serious and most people will not come across them.
However I would HIGHLY recommend that if you flash the leaked stock rom or a custom one based on it you will need to flash Joboo kernel as it fixes the most annoying bug which is the lock screen delay which is really bloody annoying. It also increases battery life as Philz kernel is bad for this. You can also freeze non-needed stock apps to increase life more.
By the way incase you didnt know, since you have 4.0.4 stock you dont need to worry about the brick bug if you simply flash a custom kernel like Siyah instead of keeping stock.
Okay, they are not fully working I guess. I can always be wrong.

Yeah, actually I did know that I could flash Siyah to avoid the brick risk but I just wanted to do it all at the same time, I mean, root -> flash Siyah ->jump to another custom ROM. That's why my question about waiting for stock 4.1.2 for more stable ROM's before flashing and rooting :victory:

You dont need to "root" and then flash Siyah, Siyah gives you root.
If coming from stock rom/kernel all you need to do is....
Flashing custom rom:
Flash Siyah kernel via ODIN
Reboot into custom recovery
Wipe data/factory reset
Flash rom zip (and gapps if using CM based rom)
Reboot device.
Note that flashing a custom rom will come with its own kernel so it replaces Siyah.
Flashing Stock Rom:
Flash stock rom via ODIN
Flash compatible custom kernel
Note: If you using leaked JB you should use nothing but the Joboo kernel. If flashing GB or ICS rom you should use Siyah.

I don't know what to do . I am sitting a lot , trying to update my version (4.0.3) to 4.2.1. Also, i am looking for a stable Rom with working GPS.
Do i have to update my version in oder to put a Rom that based on a newer Version?
I got Ics Passion v13 with 3.1.10-ICS Passion Kernel.
I tried to update from Kies but it doesn't recognize my Phone (There is no option in the ICS ROM to put the USB connection in Kies mode )
I really need help - how to update the version and what Kind of Rom and Kernel are the bests in your opinion ?

You can try the new AOKP build. Vibrantmtd is once supported again instructions for installing the rom are listed in the thread...

As far as GPS is concerned it is either a hit or miss...might work or it might not. Unfortunately I am not able to test it since my vibrant is bricked
But I can tell you that AOKP is an excellent rom I been using it for nearly a year now since I bought my Galaxy Nexus. It is far much better than ICS passion in every aspect. Never had any problems with it.
As for the kernel I can't really say which one I would recommend since I honestly can't ever recall flashing a kernel for my vibrant...I've always used the kernels that are included in the ROM(S).
Just remember to backup your apps...because you will lose them in the process since this is not an update...it is more of an upgrade(4.0.3 to 4.2.2).

The ROM will update you straight to 4.2.2. I don't think you need to be on 4.1 to update or any other version for that matter. Just flash the ROM through recovery and you should be good to go. Good luck.

Finally i had time to do the upgarde. Unfortunately i tried to flash the Rom but it says eror.... Before the step of Flashing the rom, in the guide has been written that i have to wipe system... but i didn't find this option.... What should i do now ?
I recently picked up a GP 4.2. I immediately got it rooted so now I'm running a 2.3.6 stock rom with root. What's the next step in terms of getting a recovery installed and maybe moving up to an ICS or JB rom? I've kind of poked around a bit but it's some what confusing with all the other types of GPs in the same area. Does anybody have a recovery and rom they'd recommend? Is using rom manager to push CWM feasible?
I would recommend the ChaOS ROM/Kernel which includes CWM. It is one of the few available ROMs for this device right now but offers a lot of great features. You can also install an S3 or Jelly Bean theme with the ChaOS ROM. Here's the link to the ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2279806. I do not believe using ROM manager to push CWM is feasible on this device. Also, CM7 will most likely make it on to this device very soon. I would recommend watching for that in the near future. Thank you for the info Meta. I'm somewhere around the mid-high mid level with flashing and rooting but slogging through trying to find the right info for a GP 4.2 was getting a bit hectic. I think part of it was the way some people abbreviate the model compared to others. I just wanted to make sure I didn't brick the device.
I got it mainly for a perm, in-car music and GPS/navigation provider instead of always looking to my phone to do it. One thing I noticed about the rom, it mentions installing it via CWM. If I don't have CWM yet, can this rom get pushed by odin or do I have to get CWM first and then flash the rom?

Do you know if CM will come to the 3.6 as well? And from what I understand, to get CWM on the 3.6 you have to flash a custom kernel?

Yes. Those instructions are correct. However, you do not need to run the adb dev tool like the person does in the beginning of video in order to boot into download mode. You can just hold the power, home, and down-volume button to boot the phone into download mode before using Odin. Zaclimon's CWM kernel can be found here (along with the wifi fix): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198444 and installed with the instructions in the youtube video.

From what I have read I know that SerkTheTurk is currently compiling CM for the 4.2. I would imagine either him or some other 3.6 dev will take up the task of CM for your device. And, the answer to your second question is yes, you do have to flash a custom kernel similar to how the 4.2 requires a custom kernel.

Ok thanks. I also have a question regarding flashing kernels. In the linux world (and other os world), randomly changing your kernel is a big no no that would lead to major compatibility issues. I don't understand how people can mix and match kernels, roms, firmware, bootloaders, recoveries and everything else? There won't be conflicts?
Regarding the kernel available for the 3.6: what do I do if I encounter stability issues with it and, say, the upcoming CM7? I wouldn't be able to go back to my original kernel because I didn't have CWM to back it up in the first place. Won't I be stuck with a potentially faulty kernel?

In changing kernels in the android world, you have mixed results. There are times a kernel can cause some issues but for the most part (we're talking like 98%), if an XDA dev posts a kernel and lets you know you can use it, you can trust it. These devs no matter the device spend painstaking hours ironing things out. Also, many of them have a select group of people testing the kernel for faults and issues. In a very active community, if a well known dev posts a kernel, you can trust it. HOWEVER...no matter what we think or believe or what we're told, every device is a unique and beautiful snowflake. Back up back up back up BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP your stuff. If you want to be super ULTRA safe, take the back up and download it to your PC or somewhere safe.

Just flash the cwm kernel because its basically the stock kernel but with cwm, and it shouldnt brick but if it does you can flash the stock kernel back again

But about kernels, on the webpage where I downloaded the stock rooted rom http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=166 it says specifically that the Wifi module in system and kernel must MATCH. This is what I'm talking about in regards to kernel compatibility with roms. How do I know if a kernel I'm downloading will have changes applied to it that will work with another rom like with this stock rom/kernel?
Well in order-I used odin to flash CWM. Once it rebooted, I saw the Galaxy SII boot anim. Used Rom Manager to have it boot to CWM. From there I flashed wifi fix, the rom and then the mod pack. My build number is gingerbread-ueld3. From what I can tell, I think I'm all done. At first I was like hrmmmmm. Doesn't look much different. When I hit the toggle bar though, I could tell it had changed. The process was all very simple after I got headed in the right direction with CWM. That was my only confusing start point for this.
Edit-my bad. The rom didn't take on the first flash. I could tell by the build number. Reflashing the rom and the s3 addons. Hrmmm. Might be boot looping. It's going through the comet and coming up to the white samsung, vibrates a few times after a bit and goes back to the comet with no sound.

Well I had to flash this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198234 to get CWM on mine. I haven't actually flashed anything with CWM because there doesn't seem to be any good roms for the 3.6 unless CM7 comes out sometime. Poop. I think I bootloped the sucker. I can use Odin to reflash the stock, rooted rom just like I did when I got it first rooted right? Do we have another rom for the 4.2 I could try flashing? Not sure why it has bootlooped. I even went back into CWM, did a factory reset, flashed only the rom (no addons) and same thing. Possible bad download? It is flashing from the internal SD as my CWM is not seeing my external SD.

I have been meaning to post this on the dev thread for awhile. I thought this problem might only be for certain people but I think it applies to US and maybe non-EU devices. I believe that the ChaOS ROM will bootloop on US (YP-GI1/XAA) devices if you do not install ChaOS's Enhanced Stock ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2279450) for whatever reason. I spent days trying to install his ROM and bootlooping.
The way I successfully installed (if I remember correctly):
-Do a factory reset of rooted stock ROM
-Boot to CWM (meaning you have already flashed the custom kernel) and install ChaOS's Enhanced Stock (put all install files on internal SD)
-Boot to CWM, wipe davlick cache under "advanced", wipe cache partition, and install the ChaOS ROM
-Wait a little while and your device should boot up properly

SerkTheTurk said it very well, you do not need to worry, but if you also want to do a backup before you install the custom kernel you could use the adb tools on the computer to backup the device. I'm sure you could learn how to do that with a quick Google search.

-Wait a little while and your device should boot up properly

ell there's not really much point in backing up the kernel when I've already downloaded it on my computer.
I've since flashed KingOS rom and don't really notice any differences at besides a few color changes... what's all the hype about?

Xen-it seems GPlayer development is still fairly newish. the work you see from devs now are all ground work. For the 4.2 and 3.6, they seem a little less dev populated than the 4 and 5. People will build upon the work of early devs and eventually get kernels that can OC and maybe ICS and JB roms. At this stage, we likely won't see anything like ZOMG earth shattering until people spend time with the devices. Seems Serk is on his way to doing the best he can for 4.2 but I am not sure who is tackling 3.6
It's weird how roms for devices go. I learned this when I had a tbolt and shockingly saw a FUNCTIONAL JB rom for my old Eris while the tbolt was still hanging back in ginger land with not even a really good ICS rom let alone JB. I asked the Tbolt community-why? How is it the dinosaur Eris has JB and not us? It all depends on what the devs can do with the sources provided. Sometimes certain hardware points are sticky. you can have beautiful JB rom for a device that can't talk to the camera if the hardware source isn't made available (reference the HP TP for many years)
For now, flash what you're comfortable with and and learn what you do and don't like. Also learn if you want to play things safe and not experiment or take on potentially beta builds. For the tbolt, tackling an ICS rom was too dicey so I never did. On my new Rezound, I eat up JB roms as they are in much better shape
If I was to install, say, the Liquid Smooth ROM onto my i717 (I have a good amount of experience with flashing ROMs, so that much I know,) specifically, the KitKat version, it lists kernels in the download links. Would these kernels be included with the ROM files themselves, i.e. install at the same time as the ROM, or would I have to flash the kernel separately before flashing the ROM? Thank you VERY much in advance

The thread should tell you if the kernel is baked into the Rom our not but the stock kernel usually comes with it. I'm pretty sure you're talking about a beefed up kernel tho. You'll just have to read the thread and if you're still not clear about it, ask in that thread to be sure.

there is always a kernel included with a rom. most alternate kernels are made and or flashed to combat a side effect or incompatibility with some folks devices. its not that provided kernel doesn't work, just that every device is different and the alternates can sometimes be more compatible.
however, I would suggest you give the original kernel a chance to settle, at least a day if not two. if it just flat out is not working for you, then flash an alternate onto the rom. wipe you caches ( not factory) flash kernel by itself and your good
never want to discount reading here as Gimmeitorilltell suggests. reading educates you and puts you in a better position to help yourself first.

In general stick with the kernel that comes with a ROM unless you have a reason to change, like stability, overclocking, etc... but you do flash the kernel after the ROM; anytime after the ROM flash really. You don't need a clean flash before kernel switch.
The dev probably did not test his/her ROM with every kernel possible so if you want support your best bet is to be on the kernel included. For the 1st install of a ROM if you are unsure you should definitely use included kernel; as sometimes you just can't predict what changing it will do.
That said there many of us do switch kernels when installing updates, I certainly do. There are not alot of kernels for our phones as only a dedicated few devs continue to support the Note but you have a few choices. All kernels I've seen allow performance/governor control to some degree. If you read through the various ROM threads you'll find that some kernels are preferred by users but for the most part kernels like Uber work well with most ROMs.
P0llution's ROM patch allows you to switch kernels after flashing a ROM (BeanStalk, LiquidSmooth, etc....) and even before 1st boot. It also has patches for various KK problems. It is in the Beanstalk thread 1st post.

So I've tried a bunch of different ROMs (CleanROM, Alliance, Beans, CM, OMNI, "Stock", probably more), but I've never really understood kernels. It seems some custom ROMs have a kernel built in (or several to choose from via Aroma), while others do not. Right now I'm running AOKP (4.4.2) with the kernel from OMNI (3.0.64-OMNI-g5f47648), presumably because that was the previous ROM I flashed with a kernel. I'm not too concerned with customization, more with stability.
I've been having a few minor bugs and crashes and I'd like to try perhaps the stock kernel to see if that might help, but I have some questions:
1) Does it matter when flashing a kernel whether the ROM is TW or AOSP?
2) Are there multiple versions of kernels that correspond with the Android version of the ROM?
3) What's the best/easiest way to flash a kernel, presumably through the custom recovery like a ROM?
4) Where can I find the stock kernel? I found this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2610870) with the stock MJ9 kernel, but going back to my first two questions I'm not sure if it would work with my current ROM.

Yes. TW and AOSP kernels are different.. The only one, that I believe, that can be used with both is Devil kernel for Dual Booting
2) Are there multiple versions of kernels that correspond with the Android version of the ROM?
Yes. Usually every version of android that gets updated.. the kernel does as well

Yes you can flash kernels through a custom recovery. Most of the time they are included with the Rom that you flash. A lot of the custom ones out have flashable zip for you to flash them through a recovery.

No this will NOT work with a AOSP rom.. The kernel will be specific to that ROM and every other TW 4.3 ROM, but NOT AOSP

Thanks for the explanations, that helps tremendously. I'm confused now, however, because several people on the AOKP thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2453566) claim to be on "stock kernel". Is there a stock kernel for AOSP that I'm missing?

Well that's what I thought, but why then would I be using an OMNI kernel (3.0.64-OMNI-g5f47648) when I have flashed the last three AOKP nightly ROMs that have come out? Or am I missing something here?

Maybe he uses that kernel.. AOSP kernels, I believe are pretty similar.. I may be wrong, I am by NO MEANS a kernel guru..I would open you zip of your ROM (AOKP) and take a peak.. if there is a boot.img than it flashes a kernel.. and if your says OMNI then thats the kernel the dev has used..

Should be able to if you back it up previously.. but make sure it is same rom.. TouchWiz for TouchWiz.. AOSP for AOSP

I have a noob question, I'm currently using n3bula 3.9 custom rom and it's been running fine for a while. I noticed that users chose the agni kernel whereas I chose the stock one. So my question is, is it possible to flash just the kernel from recovery without losing my data? I've spent so much time and effort customizing my phone, therefore, I just want to change the kernel. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I would think that as long as it doesn't break anything you should be fine. Probably do a backup first if you're worried about it.
Thanks for the response Michael, however, that was the response I was dreading! I'm actually worried I'll lose my WhatsApp and Viber accounts because even if I backed up my data, I'd still have to register my old WhatsApp and Viber numbers all over again which I don't have anymore.. ??
