Canadian G2 - G2 General

Hey guys! Soon I'll be buying a G2 outright. I'm on Telus in Canada and I'm just wondering if it really matters what variant I buy. I see a few different models available to buy unlocked and just wanna be sure there's no big difference for me which one I buy.
I suppose if they'll all work just fine, then I should go with the best dev supported model....if there is one.
Thanks for any input.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk

All the phones in Canada are the D803 version but I got mine through Wind Mobile which is the D801 and came factory unlocked.
Software versions between the 2 are different as well but I'm not sure what is different.
I'm not sure if there are any major differences between the Canadian models but things I saw through xda are that my D801 from Wind is missing the 3rd mic located by the flash. I haven't tried it yet, but I read that this affects the audio zoom function by rendering it barely recognizable and/or useless.
Also, not sure if you would care (but matters to me) is that I am unable to set my D801 LG G2 camera to mute without rooting and flashing another rom.

Thanks! So 803 may be best then. I see just about all the variants available. So maybe I'll focus on the 803.
I'm really hoping signal strength is better than my S2. I gotta go outside where I live to talk or text. Lol

Can anyone confirm that the LTE bands on the Rogers D803 are the same as Bellus?

I may go with a d802....at this point there seems to be more development for it. We'll see in a bit when I'm ready to buy if that changes or not. But seems there isn't much for the 803.

Yes they both use AWS for LTE (Bell and Rogers also have access to BRS 2600, but TELUS doesn't).

wait a minute. the SGS2 is being sold unlocked already from most places. so if you buy one it will just work on tmobile USA, just pop in your sim and go. however the SGS2 will not support tmobile USA 3G so you will only be stuck on EDGE/2G. nothing can change that.

no that wont work either unless the phone is specifically made for tmobile usa 3g bands. when the USA versions come out, they are already confirmed for ATT, verizon, etc, but no tmobile. none of those versions will work on tmobile.
this has alreayd been covered, and the only choice you have is the samsung Hercules coming in place of the SGS2 to tmobile.

I have been using the galaxy note on wind mobiles AWS network. After 5 months using the note on wind I can honestly say no radio can achieve a solid connection.

Note supports all frequencies required for Wind or any AWS carriers. T-Mobile Galaxy Note has the same hardware as AT&T or any Canadian Galaxy Note. So, if the phone is unlocked, it should work no matter where the phone was from.
You just need to find the right modem to work with Wind. Try different ones and see which one works.
Unlocking the phone doesn't change the frequencies that it can pick up does it I thought that was hardwired with the attenae
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
From what I read flashing new modem still won't give you a solid connection. Look for a T-mobile note or save up for the AWS Note2.
Its not worth it to carry around an unstable phone, what happens when you need it in an emergency?

"supports" and works correctly are not the same. I can put low octane gasoline in my car, and it will run, but it will run very poorly. My experience will suffer compared to the experience of running with the correct fuel.
I'm just saying since we have the versions for both networks, get the best phone, and quit working so hard to have only a so-so experience.

My point is that T-Mo Note is the same as all other Note hardware-wise. The only difference is that T-Mo is locked to its network with its own software.
To use Wind, he is going to have to unlock the phone with T-Mo or other carrier-locked Note. So, if he already has a Note in-hand, it is just a matter of finding the right ROM/radio/modem.
IF current radio/modem selections really are less than 100% stable, it is OP's decision to find a T-Mo Note (if that guarantees 100% stable service), or to wait for new radio/modem.

Clearly, this guy has no problem with Wind, and there is a working solution out there. OP just needs to work a little to find it.
If you flash a t-mobile rom on the at&t phone and vise-versa, neither phone works correctly. So they may look the same on paper but they are not the same inside.
If you think they are the same hardware, go to the t-mobile note development thread and flash the stock ICS and you will find out they are not the same.
When I was on Wind, I didn't have trouble using the Telus and Vk1 modded modems worked fine. The Blaze modem was terrible though.

When I was testing on Wind, Blaze modem actually worked the best.
Rom and radio/modem are independent of each other, and rom didn't seem to affect my network connectivity.
Hi guys,
I have the Galaxy note i717 from rogers it is similar to the ATT version. So i just sim unlocked it and am not using wind mobile. I do not want to root this phone or flash anything. I am just asking how is it possible that it is working without modifications and I want to confirm that it is in fact working.
Check the base band, it will tell you which radio it's using, out of the box will not work with Wind
Most likely some body already flashed a compatible radio to it before you had it

That may be becuase i bought it unlocked at a shop. So if it was not modified than it wont wokr? what would happen if i put a wind sim in an unmodified phone would it show wind away all the time. So since mine just says wind and not wind away does that mean it was modified and it is working

actually, on an original i717 if you just stick in a Wind SIM card, you won't even get network service within the city

On pretty much all smartphones wifi calling here in Asia works great. Blocked in the US now like in communist countries??
Coming from a Nexus 4 user, so not biased in anyway:
Pros-
By far the best phone out right now (far above the GS4)
No lag whatsoever
Supports all frequency bands (2G,3G,4G, LTE on all GSM carriers)
Solid feel
Amazing screen
Sense is beautiful (opinion)
Wi-Fi Calling ( I get bad service in my house so I miss this feature)
Cons-
Although the materials are good, build quality on some devices has been sub par
Not subsidized on T-mobile, makes me very nervous to attempt to purchase or trade for one due to the fact that it was most likely purchased on EIP.

it will? and how do you know?
But 2 are GSM and the other 2 are CDMA, so if a rom were to work on all then it'll need all apns/code for each phone in the rom. Just like how Hyperdrive and Axis Rom do on the Galaxy S3.

This is a very ignorant statement to make. Verizon always has additional phone security (bootloader "enhancements"), CDMA and GSM technologies differ greatly and even the UI is programmed differently uniquely for carriers in many aspects. Verizon doesn't have the brightness or volume slider in the pulldown. An At&t systemui may work on Verizon device, but it'd likely break something else in the process.
I'm all for carrier specific boards.

As long as there's CDMA hardware in the Verizon and Sprint models, this statement is inaccurate.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 4
I did not reply to that because you don't know how many times I wished it were true and I wanted that poster to live in the fantasy land as long as he could. Verizon where I'm at has the superior network by leaps and bounds, but there devices are ALMOST always slower to get advanced development.
Also physically the Verizon phone is thicker, buttons are smaller, and it has wireless charging. I believe the other 3 may differ slightly physically from each other as well.
Please separate boards

Agreed, def need carrier specific -or at least break out ATT/others from VZ, as the phone hardware and stock software is different.

[Q] Which version should I get?

Hi guys,
I went ahead and got a D801 (T-Mobile) thinking basically all G2s had all the bands listed in GSM Arena. I sadly found out after I got the device that this is not the case and that the D801 doesn't have the 900 band for HSDPA, which is what my carrier uses, so I'm stuck with Edge.
I'm now selling it in order to get another one that works for me (because why would you buy a Ferrari if you couldn't drive over 20Mph?...)
I've been reading up on the subject trying to find one that fits the bill but I find a lot of conflicting/confusing info so I'm just asking straight out, which version of the G2 do I need to get in order to have HSDPA on the 900 band?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks! That's just wat I needed. I was on wikipedia before but some how I missed it.
Seems like the only one I can go for is the Verizon one. Honestly, I'm not too thrilled given their update record on my current phone (Motorola Droid 2 Global) which is also from Verizon (yeah, I waitied A LOT to do the upgrade but I really liked having a keyboard so I held on to it as long as I could).
I'll need to check how's the development scene for this one (although, I think T-Mobile is the the one with the least development going on for what I've seen) but if the scene is good I think I might go for it. Otherwise I'll get a Nexus 5 which is the closest thing to a G2.
