So I went to device functionality, and it presented me with a screen that said collect diagnostics and had a check box. Doesn't seem sneaky to me when they present you with the option to opt right out when you click on device health. /shrug

the fact that CIQ is labled not as such is sneaky, it wastes battery along with the privacy issues that most people who understand what the app does.

I turned it off through that special menu right after I got the phone, and it still shows as off in the updated T-Mobile My Account.

there's an app in the store called disable service. this isnt like other apps that run in the background to disable apps from starting, this doesnt run in the background. it changes values in services running on your phone so that they dont start up when you reboot. so go into the app and swipe to system apps. then click on android system. if you see iqservice with a check mark in it then it is really not disabled on your phone. uncheck iqservice then reboot your phone. now it is really disabled.

I know what it is. I also know that having one of the only variants with the option to turn it off and not have it baked into the stock ROM pretty much means it's not sneaky. Don't let me rain on your paranoia parade, though. CIQ has been on every carrier for years. T-Mobile lets you opt out without root or having to flash a ROM. Sneaky indeed.

Not sure what your problem is, it seems that you are the authoritative answer around this post [sarcasm\]. And while being able to disable it is nice, it's a known battery hog, has been proven to capture you keystrokes. I don't know, maybe it's better these days, however this is a matter of fool me once. And I'm not paranoid, I just prefer my privacy, period! And BTW, while we can disable it it is part of the base ROM, as it's in system. Now please loose the attitude, it's not needed around here.

There is no attitude at all. I just have a low tolerance for people who make things up and exaggerate, I guess. Can you name what Android phones released by a major carrier in the last 2 years didn't have CIQ? Everyone has known what it is since Trevor blew the lid off of it.

Freeze ut and let us know what happens
I just froze it and nothing substantial happened. I never noticed it until I flashed a new ROM. Even when I restored my backup of stock it was still there and I noticed my system ROM amount went down. I'm skeptical to backup and uninstall and see if my original amount of system ROM is returned though...

I'd guess it's some kind of monitoring or notification service that Moto uses as part of BLUR. I remember Sanjay Jha giving a talk about how Blur is the end-all and be-all of everything. It can enable better battery life, tell Moto what apps are consuming cycles, some other stuff.
Dr. Jha said, "MotoBlur allows us to know, with precision, what battery life you're seeing," before suggesting that future phones could warn you about power draining apps and bandwidth hogs. What wasn't clear though, was if he was talking about the existing Android battery manager or if Motorola has been collecting usage data -- since we never opted-in to such a program, we're really hoping it's the former.

CarrierIQ
Thought it might be worth bumping this thread in light of the breaking news about CarrierIQ rootkits that are monitoring activity on more than 150 million Android phones. On my Atrix, the icon for Fake Blur and several other strange services looks like a "Ci". Carrier IQ?

1. I ran the CIQ scanner app thingy that that dude developed (too lazy to look it up). It didn't find any of the Carrier IQ logs.
2. Motorola isn't some half-baked development shack. They have been making military-grade encryption and security stuff for years. I think if they wanted to add backdoor monitoring to Blur they would do it themselves, not contract it out to some other half-baked developer.

[Q] Pull down menu problems

I just got my phone and most of the time when receiving a email I'll pull down the menu and it keeps going back up automatically. After trying like 3 times it finally stays down. Does anyone else has this issue?
Not to insult your intelligence or anything but are you pulling the bar all the way down? When I was on GB if I didn't pull it all the way down it'd wonk out on me and shoot back up if I did it too fast.

I had the same issue on GB. I head to drag it almost all the way down to the bottom of the screen. Now on ICS I can just flick the bar downwards and it does the rest.

Yes I pull it all the way down like 3 times then if lucky it will stay down. After reading emails the pull down menu works fine. The work arounds I found is to put my finger at the top of screen and quickly flick downward then it will stay. With my old phone using it's default rom and Cyanogenmod 7, this never happend. The second work around is to use a small app called, One Click Status Bar. Place it on the home screen and when it's tapped the menu drops down.

Your phone must be rooted to have ICS. I'm debating on doing this because I like using CyanogenMod. One of the problems with rooted phones is that the market doesn't recognize the phone and paid apps disappear and it force closes alot.

I flash around a lot usually spending about a couple weeks on different Roms to test and compare features and I can say I never had a problem with Google play ever recognizing any of my paid apps.
The force closes on the other hand do happen, but very rarely if you run a good rom, and don't do anything you're not supposed to

When a phone is rooted the Google server no longer knows what device is being used. You can check this out by logging into Google wallet and look under your device list. You'll also notice that some apps show up for different os like with gingerbread and some don't for ics. After rooting the server doesn't know what apps work with the phone and at times makes some of your paid apps disappear and preventing potential future downloads.

Very true, I apologize. But you must realize that this site EXISTS for the simple idea that we, the members of it(evidently not all of them), do not want our phones stock.
The only support you'll get from a stock ROM, is from the at&t store.
and the "was not" was meant that way. I feel its a stronger form of the word rather than wasn't
This discussion got troublesome and way, way off topic.
But the bottom line is man, if you want to stay stock, there's really nothing we can do, other than advise to wipe data/factory reset via 3e recovery.
What you may have thought you knew about issues that come by rooting your phone, are maybe 1 in a 100, and most likely caused by the person themselves.
There are a few ROM's that are based on at&t "official" leaks. but there rooted.

I think you may be confusing some of your facts. That may hold true for some unbranded chinese tablets running ICS. Those ROMs have to operate as a brand name "something else" just to get market to recognize the device.
The same is not true with our phones. Root away! The issues you're concerned about do not exist on name brand android devices.

No, occasionally after update the phone will ask to reboot, I believe that after update it checks the changes and if changes aren't present the phone reboots to enable changes. I've never actually tried to figure it out
Edit: it could also be to clear cache(recently stored temporary files, not cache partition)

Dude when I first started flashing I would do things like delete system and boot out of curiosity and for the pure knowledge of how to fix such issues, I've done everything from forcing every form of boot loop currently known to corrupting my entire file tree thus requiring a repartitioning of the phone. In my guide I will say I haven't come across a few of these situations because those scenarios are assumed to be uncontrolled environments. I.e it has never happened to me in the day to day use of my phone.

some cool things I have found out,
it may be old news for you, and some were mentioned in tech blog space before
1. during my call, i turned the phone face down and it automatically turn to speaker. which was mentioned by engadget and ac, but see it working and give convenience, it is a good fun.
2. go to settings->apps-> all, I can actually disable quite a number of pre-installed bloats, without root or any other hacks. this is awesome. for example, amazon, viewnidi, vz navigator, vz backup plus all those bs, i can disable them, without worrying that if it will fc later or cause trouble =).
oh, disabling those stuff can give me much lower memory usage, and improve battery life because many of them are running at the background.
Guess what Titanium Backup uses to freeze apps by default on Android 4.x. It just uses that Disable feature as far as I can tell.
A few times when I've pulled my phone out friends have mostly just commented on the size, but I don't go on about it with non-tech people usually. I try not to be too showy.
As for cool stuff to do with it, it's really kind of gotten me in to digging in and finding mods to do to it on my own. I haven't really done that so much on my previous phones; only relied on pre-done mods, like I got the recent apps button to turn in to a menu button a good bit before anyone on the thread seemed to get it working, although a lot of the issues probably have to do with people using plain notepad, when better luck would probably be had with a "programmer's" notepad that'd probably load and save with UNIX style newlines.
Also, it gives quite a phone-bulge.

Certain apps/processes can't be disabled in stock Android, but TiBu let's me freeze them.
Honestly Youtube has to be the most impressive thing you can show anyone... the HD quality over 4g is simply great and then they try to load the same video on their apple crap and it looks like 8 bit mario... just make sure its a newer video from within the last year or so or the quality will be horrid.
mainly because everyone has that app and can compare side by side... and be like wow

That's when you may run into problem.
Having root access and do stuff like that, will give unexpected drags in some apps which will affect your battery life or other functions.
For example if some functions or apps are providing system level service to others, and unfortunately if some applications uses them.. and you frozed them... then it is totally depending on the app developers' handling in such case.
either kept polling , or throwing exceptions, FCs etc.

Android Nougat on SM-G930P

I just recently came across numerous articles claiming it was possible to get Android Nougat on a U.S model Galaxy S7. And just yesterday, samsung rolled out the galaxy beta application to the Galaxy App Store. I immediately unrooted and went to the latest firmware, and I downloaded the app. Registered and waited, and 14 hours or so after registering, I received the update. I'm honestly shocked at how good this update is. It's 10x more snappy and quick than it used to be (even after being rooted and debloated), it comes with great features such as a built in blue light filter and being able to change your screen's resolution on the fly, and the battery life is much improved. I've barely scratched the surface on what this new update comes with and just wanted to let the people on this forum know. If you're interested in seeing what it looks like I've attached some screenshots of what it looks like below.
So I got unlocked fw on my wife's Sprint S7 and like how it's bloatfree and runs real smooth. How is the Nougat 7.0 beta update compare to unlocked fw? Is it way smoother then the PJ2 fw? Just wanna see if it's worth it to even go back to PJ2 on her phone and sign up to get the beta update.

I won't lie to you, I'm a heavy root user and not having root on Android N sucks. However, it's a lot snappier than the PJ2 firmware, and it just feels a lot quicker in general. The simple materialistic look it has is great, and apps install and uninstall very quickly. You can disable nearly all the bloat that it comes with, and I'd definitely recommend trying nougat. It's been very quick and snappy so far, so I would give it a shot. Boot times improved and lag isn't nearly as bad as Android 6.0.1.

So it's worth losing root?

I'd say it is, I used xposed for so many things (mainly adblocking), and it's annoying to get the ads back, but it's so much faster booting up and just snappier all around, that the speed makes up for the restrictions that come with a rooted device.
All right! The update wasn't showing this morning, but I checked again this afternoon, and there it was!
Came here to post about it and I see that I'm not alone. Still downloading..

You get it downloaded and installed, if so, how do you like it so far?

So far, it's looks good. There are plenty touches that are pretty sweet, and some that I am still testing. I also own a Nexus 6, so I know what the raw Android N feels like.
One of my favorite upgrades would be the support for 3rd party apps in the Always-On Display. And for those who don't know, you can now double tap the notification icon while the screen is off (the Always-On Display screen), and it will turn the screen on and open the notification. That is a NICE addition!
I am fond of the fact that stock N groups the notifications by app, and also creates subgroups for each notification from EACH app. For example, 2 Emails and 2 text messages will be categorized into two main notification groups, and each can be expanded to display the individual notification, and can be dismissed separately, or as an "App Group." (my terminology...don't quote me on this) It seems like Samsung removed the ability to do this.
EDIT: Correction about the notification subgroups...it does handle them correctly most of the time, but there are times where it will not. For example, if you get multiple emails from the same person, it might not separate them. That much of the equation is not entirely consistent.
Still more testing....stay tuned.

I am unrooted, and will probably stay that way for this device (for the time being, at least). I can say that the phone is much faster than Marshmallow. I wouldn't go through the trouble of unrooting, as the Beta program is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Not sure how many people have jumped onto the Beta ship by now.
On the other hand...you could be getting the latest version while having the snappiness that you had before. Up to you....

I haven't had time to fully dive into Nougat yet, but I'm highly disappointed there's no way to modify the notification bar icon placement as icons just pile up on the right and it looks awful. Also I have no idea what they've changed but fingerprint scanning and unlocking the screen has become extremely quick and hardly ever screws up your fingerprint.
Hmmmm...that's interesting. I have to let my notifications pile up to see what you mean. I clear my notifications fairly quickly.
So here's a little more information about the update. For those who have not gotten the update as yet, install your desired themes while on Marshmallow. N Beta does not allow you to install new themes until the N build is officially released.... bummer. However, themes that are alresdy installed will work (as you.csn see, I'm using one as well).
Also, as seen in the screenshot, you can disable the default Samsung keyboard. That's new!
I will be back with more minor updates.

You need to be on the latest firmware of sprint in order to receive if as it's done through the beta program and they verify your device.

I'm not taking about notification icons I'm talking about when you enable things such as airplane mode, silent, that sort of thing, as they all just sit beside each other to the right.

Oh, right....not left. Duh! I don't understand why it bothers you though...it seems no different from MM...not unless it bothered you then as well.

That's why I said I'm disappointed that the feature to do that hasn't been added.

Right. I see that System UI isn't added. Not surprised, though.
