FYI: Update to the latest Google Hangouts to resolve SMS/MMS problems - HTC Rezound

I've tried a few custom ROMs, and one minor annoyance is with sending/receiving MMS messages or correctly getting group texts (they show up as individual texts).
Anyway, with the latest version of Google Hangouts (I'm on version 2.0.128), Hangouts can ask to basically take over as the default SMS / MMS app on the phone. And by doing so, this resolved all of my text messaging related errors.
There are a few downsides:
- It opens much slower than the AOSP messaging app
- I'm not able to do quick actions from the Notifications screen (whereas previously I could "Mark Read" or "Reply" right from notifications).
Personally, I've been trying to get all of my friends and family to use Hangouts for real (and stop using SMS and MMS). My techie coworkers all do this, and it's great.

[Q] Group txt messages with Google Voice - capable yet?

Hi Folks,
I heard that Hangouts can handle both group chats and Google Voice, as well as natively working with the Google Voice manner of MMS receipts, but when I tried testing with it, the chats only showed up in the Hangout app on other Android phones, which was foreign to the other phone owners (i.e., their default is the Google Messaging app).
Group chats are increasingly being used by other school parents among my kids' friends, which has been causing all sorts of communications problems because I can only see the original sender of a group chat in the default Google Voice app for txt messages.
Does anyone know if I can use my Google Voice number for sending/receiving group chats that show all participants, and if so, if I can send messages back to the group in a manner that won't trigger their Hangouts app if they don't have that set as default for messages?

Zenwatch 2 Canno't "read" content of text messages

I get a notification that a text has been received on my watch - but neither a swipe up or anything else for that matter allows me to read the content of the messages(s) - Kinda useless. My only options are Block App, discard...I am using an LG G4 with the stock messaging app. I have tried Hangouts but a lot of my contacts use iPhones - So that's not an option - I need something seamless and easy to use.
Ideas? Steps I can follow to set this up correctly?
Try using Hangouts as your default SMS. When you said "but a lot of my contacts use iPhones - So that's not an option" sounds like you didn't enable SMS as default in Hangouts. I don't know why your phone would care that you're texting an iPhone if you're just sending SMS.
How to use hangouts for messages: https://support.google.com/hangouts/answer/6013419?hl=en
But if you don't like hangouts, you can still use the old messenger app: https://support.google.com/hangouts/answer/6013419?hl=en
Thanks...
basically... just use a different Messaging App. I've used a few. I currently use YAATA but Texta and several others have Android Wear support.

Messenger App (Group Messaging Not Working)

Hey Everyone!
I recently just updated to Marshmallow and since then my Messenger App (version 1.7.050) is not displaying any setting for Group messaging. I can make a group message by adding people to a group conversation but it sends individual text messages to each person.
I can switch my default app to Textra, Hangouts, or Sony's default messaging and they all allow me to use group messaging correctly. They also all display the option in the settings menu to enable/disable group messaging. (Currently all of my texting apps are "enable" group messaging in hopes it will force Messenger App to work, but it does not).
I have uninstalled, re-installed Messenger multiple times, and have performed multiple restarts of the device itself. (still not luck)
Within the settings of Messenger it does display my number correctly, just no MMS/Group messaging Options
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated
Thank you for any help!!!
Z5 Compact ( Andriod 6.0) Messenger (1.7.050) Carrier (T-Mobile)
I have the same issue. Also on MM and using T-Mobile. I started using hangouts and that works better for me, but MMS doesn't always send correctly using hangouts. Its been a pain in the butt trying to get SMS/MMS working consistently since the MM upgrade. I also tried Textra, and about 50% of the time my MMS would fail on that also. Sticking with Hangouts for now, but once an update gets released for Messenger I will try it again.

Signal messenger unsecured SMS will not send over 160 characters

I've been attempting to use Signal as my default SMS app for the convenience of not switching between two different apps for messages. It mostly works fine, but as the title says, if I send a long SMS that needs to be split into multiple messages, it always fails to send. I'm on US Cellular, if that matters. It doesn't have an issue with this functionality in the default app (Google's Messages) or the other third party SMS app I tend to use, Pulse SMS from Luke Klinker. It also doesn't have any options to convert long SMS to MMS, as some apps do.
Googling for the issue, I was able to find some similar problems for specific model of phones from a few years ago, but that had all appeared to have been reported on and patched at that time.
Is anyone else using Signal on their V30? If so, can you successfully send a long text message?
If anyone has any suggestions or anything, let me know. Otherwise I'll try to report it to the Signal team soon.

SMS Cleanup App?

With the advent of desktop messaging, I'd like to use Android Messages as my default SMS app. One main feature still missing from Android messages is the ability to auto delete messages once a thread hits a certain number of messages. I find that my sms database gets too huge and can slow things down. Are there any apps that will cleanup sms messages like that? I assume it couldn't be done automatically since I'd have to make it my default sms handler to work, but running something like that occasionally would be fine. Cleanup by date older than x isn't great since there are some old threads I want to keep, I'd rather do something like a max of 250 messages per thread.
I guess based on the lack of any replies that there is no app that can do this. Seems like a good opportunity for someone.
