Is there a way to reset the phone so to speak (delete all of its data in preperation for a sale) but keep the latest current OS installed?
I have unlocked my Australian Vodafone Galaxy S2, factory reset, then I updated from gingerbread to 4.1.2. I would like to be able to sell it saying it's running 4.1.2, but in performing any kinda factory reset/wipe I'm going to be stuck back at 2.2.0 (or whatever) arn't I?
Basically what is the best way to prepare an android phone for sale whilst maintaining the best OS version?

Nope. I can explain to you the whole logic behind wiping/factory reset but long story short if you do a reset through for example the option in the settings menu it will only erase personal data such as apps contacts etc. Try it yourself the OS will remain the same as before the reset.

Wait, yer wording kinda lost me, do u mean if i do the settings>backup and reset>factory data reset>reset device afterwards I will remain 4.1.2?

No. If you want to 'rollback' the OS; I.E either go back to stock from custom or go back to earlier stock, you need to flash it. A factory reset won't achieve that.

How do I do a full factory wipe of my phone? I know you can go into privacy and do a factory reset but that is for data only isn't it? I want to make the phone how it came in the box. I was rooted and had the lag fix installed but I have undone both in preparation for this. Thanks.

You will have to flash it with odin to get back to full stock. why do you need it back to stock?
You can do a "factory format" not a factory reset, and this will erase all data and restore to factory settings. Download my service menu program in my signature to do this. Otherwise do what the last poster did and reflash with odin.
phone seems slower in general than when I got it a few weeks ago, wondering if I messed something up playing with it. also I have a lot of fails when texting. just want to get it back like it came then start over.

If it was me I would do a Clockwork recovery of the stock rom. Im a little afraid of Odin due to all the bricks I have seen on the forums involving Odin (plus im on a Mac). If you are not returning it to Tmobile you could also try one of the roms that are posted in the forums. I would recomend Bionix or Frankin-twiz. Both devs are spot on with thier roms.

Just do a factory format, all the other methods listed are complicated
Go to dialer and dial in:
*2767*3855#
thats it, it will format your device and set it back to factory.
you can do a soft reset by dialing in

tried that it erases all your data and settings but doesn't restore anything you have removed. will most likely use clockwork then.
Anyone know how to go about this on my GSII?
Planning on flashing to Stock and would prefer a fresh start, would just flashing the firmware be sufficient?
I do remember seeing a reset option when pressing power+home+vol down on start. Would ideally like everything to go back to factory and all data deleted, basically factory fresh.

Have you rooted and flashed anything or changed anything on /system?
If not, the reset option in recovery would be fine.
If you have, you would need to reflash.

Rooted yes, though not sure if anything is changed on/system as a result (I personally haven't).
I've an O2 Handest so would like to unbrand, hence I would be flashing to the actual stock Rom so I'm assuming I would need to Root again anyhow?
Just wondering If I would need to reset then flash, or would flash be sufficient and get rid of everything in the process?
A flash should be enough to clear out anything left behind.
You would obviously flash the O2 UK firmware, and you would want to reset the download mode counter (see the dev section) before you presented it as an "untouched" phone

I have Simply Honey 2.8 Rom on my phone and have had this for the last few months.
I wanted to do a hard reset (since my phone seems to be laggy and force closing more often)
When the phone boots up after a hard reset, will it boot up with the custom ROM or with stock?
Is there anything else i need to make sure to do, before i hard reset?

Referring to your use of the phrase "hard reset", in the words of Inigo Montoya, "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
If what you meant is a factory reset, then the answer is it'll boot up with your custom ROM. If you really mean "hard reset", then uh... turn your phone back on and everything will be as it was when you turned it off.

A factory reset is usually necessary when flashing a new rom (Say Stock 2.1 > Simply Honey). However, if you're only updating a rom (Say Simply Honey v2.7 > Simply Honey v2.8) then you don't have to do a factory reset.
Hello - I didn't like the updates I heard about in the factory 2.3.6 ROM update, so I skipped it. And, I'm rooted.
So, a few questions:
Can I upgrade directly from 2.3.4 to ICS from a rooted phone? Or do I need to step-up to 2.3.6 first?
Do I need to actually unroot before I do any of this?
Can I re-root once I go ICS?
I've heard that the best bet is to do a factory reset after upgrading to ICS. If I do this, is the best bet to do a Titanium Backup app & data backup/restore process? Are there any better solutions to capture all my data that I'd lose with a reset?
Any info/insights greatly appreciated. Note: I have searched far and wide on XDA for answers to these questions, but I could not find any direct answers that made me feel confident enough to move forward. So, any direct response appreciated.

1. yes, you can upgrade straight from 2.3.4 I've done it.
2. you don't need to unroot before - the upgrade will unroot you.
3. your best bet is NOT TO FACTORY RESET AFTER UPGRADE - IT COULD BRICK YOU BECAUSE OF A KNOWN BUG IN FACTORY KERNEL
4. If you want rooted version of upgrade look for the odin.heimdall version the Creepyncrawly put in the development section.
or you could try Semi UCLE5 that i have linked in the signature. It looks like the stock upgrade but it is smoother, among other things.

Jon first of all, you can always upgrade to any new update regardless of your Android version so it's a Yes to your first question. Secondly, whenever you update to a stock ROM your device gets unrooted itself so you'll have to root it again.

I've read about the kernel bug, but THANK YOU for reminding me that it would affect a simple factory reset. Yeesh, that's a pretty serious bug when a standard reset could brick a phone. So, one remedy, as you say, is to go with UCLE5. Smoother sounds ideal to me (I've heard that ICS on GS2 is a bit jittery on the homescreens, which totally stinks). But if I go with OCLE5, that's a custom ROM so that means I'll lose the ability to do the OEM upgrade to keep all my apps & data intact, correct?
If that's correct, what's the best way to ensure all my settings, contacts, apps, data can be easily restored on a wiped phone? I have Titanium Backup + Root. I assume I'd keep root with OCLE5? And would I just run a TB restore on apps & data (and not system settings)? Are there any system settings I can backup/restore safely between ROMs/OS versions?
I've never flashed a custom ROM so I don't know how y'all keep all your stuff intact as you switch around!

Well, first, since you have never flashed a custom rom I would suggest reading until you're sick of reading before flashing. It will pay off in the long run. Regarding flashing from 2.3.4 up to Custom UCLE5 and keeping all of your apps and contacts - I'm not sure how that would go, honestly. For me, my contacts and calendar are saved on my computer through MSOutlook and I sync them with MyPhoneExplorer without any problems. Most of the apps I use (which is not a lot at all) I don't bother backing up when I flash roms and wipe data clean. I have backed up some in the past with Titanium Backup (pro version is worth it), but only if I know absolutely that I need the data from them. Otherwise, I have just done fresh installs of apps because I have read so much about people having ROM issues from restoring apps with titanium.
About losing the ability to do the OEM upgrade - If you ever want to you can, it'll just take time, and yes, you would have to wipe data anyway to go back to 2.3.4 then use KIES. Kind of a pain if you ask me. Plus, ask anyone here on custom stuff - once you go with a custom ROM, you won't want to go back to stock - EVER.
Hope this helps. feel free to pm me if you need. I'll be on the road for the next few days. remember - READ as much as you can. start with the "stickies" in the top of the main thread with a little pin on the left.
p.s. one more thing. Get yourself a usb jig. it's only a few buck online. once you start flashing roms you may want to try other ones. If you make a mistake somewhere, a jig can get you out of a jam quick.
Make sure to factory reset after. Ive read many problems with notifications messing up until the reset was done. I've done it no problems. On two seperate s2 i777s. Its always best to do this after a big update to the next version

Good idea. I do resets if I come from gingerbread too. But I know with this ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650948) you have to make sure you have the kernel that is based off of the stock kernel - AJ's kernel to safely factory reset. I think you will get a boot loop if you factory reset with the Siyah installed. I could be wrong, but I remember getting a boot loop on mine when I had siyah installed. Maybe it was because i did a reset from settings/back up and reset/factory reset and then formatted the sd card (since I had so much useless crap on there, luckily backed up on my pc).

You're kidding right? No do not tell him to factory reset with the stock kernel. If his phone has the big he could burn out his emmc chip. Then he would need to pay mobile tech videos to jtag it.

you have to flash iOS on your phone first before you can upgrade to cupcake, immediately update to donut before rebooting, then you have to go through eclair, froyo, and you will find yourself at gingerbread. DO NOT REBOOT AFTER FLASHING GINGERBREAD!! you have to flash ICS during the shutdown process....if you miss your cue, you will have to start all over

If only one app is having issues I'd uninstall and reinstall the app. Factory Data Reset is really a "last resort" sort of thing. And the main thing it does for you is to uninstall all the apps you've installed and then reinstalls them.
Why not just wipe the application data for Watch ESPN? As far as Factory Reset, it wipes /data and /cache. If you're using stock recovery, this will include the internal SD card, so pictures, videos, etc. that you have taken will also be wiped.

The idea of factory reset can be quiet confusing in android. The word "factory reset" is fancy enough to trick you that it will restore everything back to where it was...but all it does is just clearing stored cache, data, and etc etc., and it does NOT promise you anything. In lots of circumstances, damaged system or installed apps can't be restored, and they are ended up getting firmware flashed by manufacturer (some Verizon stores do flash firmware but many don't). Let's say you're rooted and removed all the bloats using system app remover. That's not going to restore your bloats to where it was....and you'll be rejected from receiving OTA update.
To get back to your question, "Will I lose root if I factory reset my phone?" I think it really depends on how you rooted. I think if you rooted your phone by flashing rooted image, then probably not. But if you use ADB shell to root your phone, you may lose your root.
Try to clear your cache and see if it works again.....I think that's the best way.
I agree you probably don't need a factory reset here. But no you will not lose root. Root is custom binaries inside the system that will not be touched. Depending how you installed your super user app I guess you could lose that, but you who's just have to download one
