Give Fire OS some love! - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Is it only me that likes Fire OS on this beauty?
Everyone seems to be in a mad rush to get rid of it and install Android I'll be honest, I was too, and the only reason I chose the HDX over the N7 was the hardware, but after using the HDX all yesterday I actually uninstalled Nova (that was the first thing I did lol) and I'm loving Fire OS.
Sure, it's quite restrictive if you're a power user, most notably the lack of Google Play Services, I've got a few apps that rely on those! Sure it's not running the latest android. Sure it's not particularly customisable, but you can install a new launcher if you want.
But, all my kindle books and subscriptions are available on the home screen, Dolby surround technology is built-in and sounds great given the limitations of the speakers, and not forgetting a fully working and integrated LoveFilm! Granted none of us here will most likely us MayDay, but it's there if needed. It's a media consumption OS and what it does, it does excellently.
Fire OS and root is a great combo as long as you accept it for what it is, I'm certainly turning into a fan...

I wouldn't mind FireOS if there was a way to install icon packs. Try side loading an app that's not available on the Amazon App store and stare at the hideous low res icon you end up with in the carousel or home page.
I also like using folders on the home screen to organize and quickly access my favorite apps. Adding apps to the homescreen on Fire OS just isn't as flexible. The Quickswitch feature also doesn't work correctly with side loaded apps and the carousel is useless to me for the most part because you can't control what it displays.
Switchr + a custom launcher is just way more convenient. This also allows much more customization both in terms of looks and function.
This is my setup for now and I love it.

Yeah I noticed that. Is there a way to put the Amazon icon on if the app is available in the Amazon store but you've got a later version installed?

What launcher are you using? It looks great and it looks like you have widgets working. I have rooted my HDX and widgets don't work using Nova Launcher.

I like fire OS much better than stock android.. the only thing i really want is play store ! that's the only thing hindering this device for me, everything else blows anything I have or have had out of the water (and i have em all)!

Not having playstore itself is not really an issue I feel, there are other markets that work fine, I use 1mobileb for example. It's the lack of Google play services that gets me.
I'd be quite happy to just get that working.
Edit: I know you can install it but it keeps stopping for me

While I'd rather have CM, I can live with Fire OS. I don't want to get rid of Amazon. But, I have way too much money invested in Google Play Store apps, all of which would have to be repurchased IF they were available in the Amazon app.store, to abandon Google.

Fair point, but sideloading paid apps also works, or at least Nova prime and my fantasy football app did, not really tried anything else yet.
The apks are in /mnt/asec

Yeah, that's what I've done on several apps. The only issue has been some apps fail on license check. I have impressed my wife with this tablet by streaming movies. The display is crazy good and it's got very descent audio.

Honestly I really like the FireOS too. I still want my Google crap on here really badly though. Now I know how the iSheep I work with felt when we switched the company phones to android.

[Q] Screen resolution issue

So I just got my G Tab yesterday. I've rooted it and slammed on Vegan. I'm really impressed with this thing. The one issue I seem to be having is that I download wallpapers (1024x600) but they never show up properly on it. They are always cropped. Am I doing something wrong?
Also, is there a way to verify that my screens resolution is correct? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Happy new G Tab guy
Yeah, that happens to me too. It seems the wallpapers only show the full art in portrait mode.
The only way I have seen to recify that issue is to download MultiWallpaper Live from the market. Set the single picture that you want was your wallpaper as the default wallpaper and it will fit to the screen as you would expect it to.
I still haven't figured out how to correctly display wallpaper without the use of this program on my GTab.

The correct app for this is MultiPicture Live Wallpaper, which is free. https://market.android.com/details?id=org.tamanegi.wallpaper.multipicture
After you install MultiPicture Live, it will appear as an option within "Live wallpapers".

You may have to try the market fix (go down to Part Three). However in my experience you will lose access to the device on the 'Web Market' (your device will disappear, never to be seen again). I have not figured out how to fix that, so be warned before trying it.
When I check the 'market', there's a list of apps I look for specifically (Not because I use all of them, but they seem to cover most of the filters). Some of them I've noticed are only available BEFORE the fix, and some (most) only available AFTER:
Adobe Flash/Air*
Mozilla Firefox*
Dolphin HD
Google Apps (Maps, Voice, Youtube, Voice Search, Gmail)
Launcher Pro
ADW Launcher (probably same filter as LP)
Titanium Backup
Yahoo! Messenger Plugin (Voice & Video)
Smart Keyboard
*means they are only available BEFORE the fix, they disappear from the market afterwards, so if you want them, be sure to download them first (may be others).
Of course, these are only the ones I know about, YMMV.
EDIT: If you still have trouble finding it and have another Android device (like a phone), you can download it there first, then back it up (eg. with Astro or TB), then sideload it onto the tablet (copy it over using preferred method, such as USB or Dropbox, then open it with a file manager on the tablet).
multipicture
I have tried puting different backround pics on each screen which works fine until I reboot and then I get a "picture not available" message on all the screens. I have tried several times with the same result.
I am a newbie - what the heck am I doing wrong!
Agree on the 1024x1024. However, if you can't find background in that resolution or no photoshop skill to make it so, use crop wallpaper.
Depend on the image, set it with the gtab horizontal or vertical.
Voila, no low rez crap background.

I've got a bit of free time until summer semester starts and i wouldnt mind spending some time on getting this fixed once and for all.

It's the built in gallery app made by cooliris, which is 16bit. Google's own gallery app that was there before android 2.1 was 24 bit. They opted for the 3rd party solution probably for it's 3d interface to attract more regular consumers.
I love google's apps for it's functionality. But IMO, graphical interface smoothness is not one of their strong areas.
I am on Calkulins 1.1, Clemsyn 9, Launcher Pro, and my wallpaper was always 1/3 cut off and moved to the bottom of the screen. Last night I switched to Go Launcher and it was fixed. Wallpaper looks perfect. Go Launcher has about 7 themes that are free and really cool. It functions a lot like Launcher Pro and is free.
happened to me
Got my gtab a few days ago and tried some new launchers tonight, when I switched to the toshiba launcher my wallpaper messed up. Live wallpapers work fine but normal ones are cropped, tried the fix posted but I got a "no photo to display" message and I don't know what folder the wallpapers are in to fix it.

Espire Launcher. MiUi/iOS style launcher.

With all the iPhone and iOS coverage recently, you might be experiencing a little iPhone envy. Sure, your Android phone already has many iOS 5 functions, but for some reason, the features just seem sexier on the iPhone.
To help you during this difficult time, we found a free app that makes your Android phone look and feel exactly like an iPhone. Actually, it's so believable, you might even forget about your iOS envy.
Espier Launcher replaces your default Android home screens with an iPhone-style interface.
Impressively enough, Espier even functions like an iPhone--swipe left to search your phone, create folders by dragging app icons over each other, swipe up to reveal the multitasking toolbar, and view notification counts on messages and missed calls.
You'll also find some things iOS lacks. For example, swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar, then swipe right to access helpful shortcuts to Wi-Fi, rotation lock, network settings, brightness, and volume.
Here are some tips for navigating Espier Launcher:
If you have an older Android phone, the interface might be a little laggy, but can be improved by tapping the menu button, Preferences, and unchecking animation effects.
To uninstall an app from the home screen, tap an hold an app icon, and hit the X.
To rearrange apps, tap and hold any app and drag the icons to the desired location.
Close running apps by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, long-press an icon, and tap the minus sign on any apps you want to shut down.
To make Espier Launcher your default interface, tap the home button, check the box next to "use by default for this action," and tap Espier Launcher.
Let's be honest--it's probably only a matter of time before Espier disappears from the Android Market. It's a blatant rip-off of Apple's mobile operating system, so don't expect it to stick around. Grab it now so you can enjoy the interface, even for just a while.

I agree i'm not much on the iOS look on the #teamandroid. But i've seen some post about it in the past and here it.
I Will say this. The launcher is SUPER smooth and works VERY well. It's coded right.
will i personally use it? most likely not. unless i want to mess with some one.
using it on my galaxy s. it's ok, but the MIUI launcher is better.
plus, it does a weird thing around all the icons...

Give it a bit of time to grow!
I mean, isn't Android all about customisation? Now we have satisfied both Android AND iPhone needs. All in one!
I mean, it has been in the Market for about a month. Yes, it might not be great. But, it is actually the only app I have seen that responds to user requests.
Give it some time and it will end up looking as good as the iPhone launcher itself.
Sure, Android is more Widgets. But, for people who do not actually use widgets, this is a GREAT app.
I like it but i want stick wit it over HTC sense

Google has just officially released the Google Now Launcher on the Play Store and made it compatible with all devices with Android v4.1 or Later, including Google Nexus devices and the Play Edition devices (Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2012), Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 10, Galaxy S4 GPe, HTC One GPe, Moto G GPe, Xperia Z Ultra GPe and the LG G Pad 8.3 GPe). You can Now Install directly from the Play Store which is easier to get future updates.
GNL Key Features :
Google Now on your home screen - it's easier than ever to get just the right information at just the right time.
Just say "Ok Google" - when you're on your home screen, just say "Ok Google" to trigger voice input. Then say your search query. Or tell your phone what to do, like send a text message, get directions, or play a song.
Faster search - tap the search box and you can enter your query immediately.
Easy access to your favorite Google products and services, like Gmail, YouTube, and Maps.
Larger viewing area - the status and navigation bars are now translucent, so your wallpaper pops from every pixel, and is even visible when you expand your apps drawer (when supported by device).
Intuitive wallpaper picker - select any image that's stored on your device, or in the cloud. Position and preview your wallpaper before you set it.

If your device is not supported, you can try the APK link below.

Thanks! No graphical glitches! Seems this is N10 ready :victory:!

Sorry for that, I just added a Google Drive mirror
I honestly have no idea what they could have changed because the GoogleHome APK does next to nothing. All the code for the GEL is actually in the Google Search APK. All this GoogleHome.apk file does is provide a bridge to Google Search and give you the option of running the GEL. The reason the file is 12 MB is basically all the wallpapers that it includes. That's really it. I mean, obviously they changed *something*, but I'd be shocked if there were any performance improvements or bug fixes. Very strange indeed. Thanks for posting, nonetheless. It's always good to stay on top of the latest versions of stuff like this.
I don't know but mine seems snappy, at least compared to what it was, and really seems to be working well on my Nexus 10

Well that's good, then. Who knows, maybe there is some kind of code in that APK other than being a bridge. We'll probably never know for sure. haha

This is completely misleading and even plain false.
This app is just a stub that has no code other than a few lines to call the real GEL which is inside the search app (which was not updated with KitKat). There are no code changes between this and v0.9, so the changelog seems to be pulled straight out of the rear.
You will gain literally nothing by installing it.

That is interesting. I wonder why it is working better for me. I will play for a day and see if it starts lagging like it did before. If not then the answer had to lie with a change in 4.4.1. Maybe a small code fix that improve performance. I will probably go back to another launcher anyway, but not until I test this well. Perhaps a framework tweak?

There's no code change. And even if there was, it'd only be to the invoker of the launcher code within search, which wouldn't do anything to speed up its actual operation.
Seems about the same to me.…

Will this work ok with KitKat version 4.4.2?
Feels faster for me too, but this also applies to chrome on 4.4.2 now. Especially when surfing porn-sites.
When I scroll pages it still seems slow. I am on a Note 10.1 2014 rooted but stock. When is scroll home pages they are bright for about a second then they dim to a normal brightness. It doesn't do this on my rooted S4 running 4.4.
Any tips on getting this to run more smoothly?

5 Productivity Apps You Should Check Out

5 Productivity Apps You Should Check Out
Do you ever run into one of those really useful apps where you're like "I really wish I had known about this earlier" but now it's too late because you moved to New Zealand and you're not fitting in? Productivity apps are everywhere. When you go to the Play store you'll see all of the usual suspects like Word, Adobe Reader, Dropbox and some others that I'm sure you are familiar with. I have a few productivity apps that I use regularly and they aren't very popular. You wouldn't really find these apps unless you're specifically looking for that exact type of app on the Play store. So I will recommend that you check out these five apps that you've probably never had the chance to try before.
Chromer
This is a brilliant app that will always be one of the first things I download on any of my new Android devices. So here is the thing. When you're browsing twitter and you click on a link that takes you to an external site, twitter will use the System WebView browser. Since this is not Chrome you will not have your saved passwords, autofill info, default apps or any of the personalized features of Chrome. This will happen is most apps that use a browser to display external links. Chromer solves this issue by forcing apps to use Google Chrome instead of System WebView. This is a fantastic app and fixes a lot of frustration caused by in-app browsers.

Tiny Apps (multiwindow)
After becoming addicted to windowed apps from my Sony Xperia device, it's difficult to use other devices when I can't run my Small Apps. Tiny Apps is the next best thing, offering a wide range of basic apps that run in windows on top of your current tasks. Each window can be moved and resized to your liking. There is no limit to the amount of Tiny Apps that you can run at once, so you'll be able to truly multitask. An app like this will be most effective on a large high resolution screen.
Download
Coffitivity
Just a little ambient noise app to silence the demons in your head. You're all familiar with these types of apps by now and there are plenty to choose from. The reason I personally use this one is because it's the only one that I've used that will continue to play audio on top of my music from my media player. This allows me to quietly play music as I listen to the mumbling of strangers in a coffee shop, as I pretend that all of these people are my friends and really enjoy my company. Maybe they're saying nice things to me like complimenting my shoes or inviting me to dinner. It's a really nice feeling and tends to make me more productive.
Download
Sunrise Calendar
Calendars are garbage. They are literally the most complicated apps I've ever used. 99% of the time I attempt to figure one out but end up uninstalling it within a few minutes. The only calendar app that I've actually been able to use is Sunrise Calendar. This is an app put together by Microsoft and they tend to make really good software. The features of this calendar aren't what make it stand out but rather it's the ease of use. If you find yourself getting frustrated with calendar apps, give this one a try.
Download
Snowball - Smart Notifications
I like this app so much and cannot recommend it enough. Snowball turns your notifications into much more than just an alert. With this app you'll be able to respond to many different types of notifications without having to launch the actual app that they're coming from. Your notifications will also be sorted by importance and the most important notification will always be on top. If you get a lot of notifications then you're going to really enjoy this app.
Download
Productivity apps are in a category that is so extensive that you wont always find the best apps for you. So post some of your favorite productivity apps in the comments.
You know Sunrise calendar will eventually be killed, Microsoft is integrating it all into Outlook.

Thank you for Chromer ! it's really useful !
thanks got chromer looks cool
Thanks for the list! The chromer link leads to making a new thread btw.
Chromer seems to be working wel with Jswarts CAF Chromium build.
I don't like snowball's new notification UI. I'd rather use it's heads-up notification UI and functionality with the default notification pull-down UI. I'm trying Sunrise and Chromer right now and they seem very nice to me. Thanks!
thanks
Thanks man, I have been using chromer for a while now
Gonna try out snowball
Also
There's a new app being released by the old es file explorer developer called fooView in XDA. It's still in alpha but it's a good productivity app.
Give it a try
is there anything for firefox same like chromer? coz i dont like chrome...
thanks snowball will try...thanks to gesture can use both system UI and snowball too.
Does sunrise calendar actually gives you the sunrise and sunset time?
I thought it was about this but it doesn't seem to be the case. Too bad, it would have been a great feature, knowing at first glance if it is day or night is not only great for planning outdoor activities but also gives you an intuitive sense of time.
Snowball looks good. going to test it

Question Change Default apps including Launcher

Nubia hides the default apps deep inside settings. I even saw multiple reviewers saying it couldn't be done.
1. Download your 3rd party app/launcher
2. Settings>Applications>App Info>Tap on the three dots on the top right>Tap Default App Settings>Desktop (on the top)>select the launcher on the top.
I can finally get nova7 running as default

There is no bug? I heard Nova had some problems in Red Magic OS 4 before:
Need to know these before purchasing a RedMagic phone
Hello guys I have some questions crossed my mind before getting it : How's red magic ui skin? Is it good? Any bugs? Can you set nova launcher as default launcher without any issue? totally using a launcher instead of default redmagic launcher...
forum.xda-developers.com
Yes but if you like say are in an app and you back out too much you back to the original launcher but when you click home you get sent back to the default launcher.

So did it fix in OS 5? I want to buy this phone but not sure about its OS 5 yet.
OS 5 has a ton of bugs, the reviewer all complained about the bugs but I've had Chinese phones before so I thought I would be ok with a few bugs/spelling errors. But Its kind of ridiculous some of the bugs I've seen in the week of ownership. It took me half a day to even setup my Google acct(In redmagic's defense, it did seem like google was having purchasing issues that day with people reporting multiple purchases and failed downloads but, I could even login in. It would refuse to connect to google servers at all and I had factory reset a few time so I don't know it was google fault or Red Magic but I didn't see any complaints about login in, just purchases when searched)
There are a ton of spelling errors, words outside of boundary boxes so you cant even read what its trying to say, nonsense names/translations for settings. Phone has the weakest vibrate for notification and calls that I often miss them and if you go to settings called "vibrations and haptic strength" there is no configuration for strength, only on or off. If you select show full notifications on lockscreen they are still hidden/collapsed If you get more than one so I have to swipe open to read the notification making it pointless. I can set the clock on lockscreen to 12hr but AOD is 24hr and there is no way to change that so far. AOD also showed no notifications so whats the point. I turned off AOD The flashlight is a joke and is dim as hell.

This does happen if you don't do the steps I mentioned in the original post.

Is there anyway that you can upload your OS in here?
Ok guys i didn't know this was a thing and gave up using 3rd party launchers. But oh boy it's really working after doing that default app setting stuff and the latest update.
i recently got an update on my red magic 5 (still android 11) and yeah now i can use nova launcher even with the nubia gestures beeing the navigation method. and even after leaving gamemode and killing all tasks in recents i still get Nova launcher.
so yeah I'll probably go with the upcoming redmagic 7 pro. being able to change the launcher is the game changer for me.
only thing I've noticed you have to slide slightly higher to open recents using the gestures otherwise it will act like the home button
I literally got rid of my Redmagic 5G because of this and right after I sold it, they released another update and tons of people were reporting using Nova hidden in settings. I'm glad it's still hidden on the newer OS.
Question though, do you think that even after it's set to the default, and going back from apps and such will restore the default launcher. If you uninstall the default launcher using ADB. Think that would stop it from restoring back or just break the entire OS?
Cause if it can't restore back, cause it doesn't exist anymore.. It "should" default to the only other launcher on the phone. Unless Nubia specifically designed the OS to have their launcher embedded as the safe mode default, rather than the system selected default.
