[Q] [Help] Bricked my ZTE V965 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Bought a ZTE V965 because it was a special offer and I wanted to give android a try. Nice phone for the money, hardware wise, but software wise it needed some work. No google apps! I rooted the phone with vroot, worked fine. Installed SuperSU and CWM, seemed fine, but CWM is not fully functional. When I boot in restore mode, it doesnt mention CWM, it seems to be the native restore mode.
Tried to install google apps as APK's, but this didnt work. Play store closes instantly. Can't login chrome. Tried to install gapps.zip in recovery mode, error message, not working. I gave the phone a factory reset a few times during all this, and that worked fine.
Then I read a guide for manually installing gapps to the system app folder.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2428314
So I installed root explorer, and put several gapps files in the system app folder:
OneTime Initializer.apk
GoogleLoginService.apk
Google Services Framework.apk
Setup Wizard.apk
Gmail.apk
Still not working though, gmail app crashes.
So I wanted to factory reset again, to start with a blank canvas. Big mistake!!! After the factory reset, the google files are not removed! Now when I boot the phone the setup wizard starts and crashes. I haven't found a way to get around it. What makes things worse, the phone is no longer detected when connected to my PC. Before ADB toolkit would detect the phone, no problem. Now nothing.
Any ideas what I can do? All that is necessary (I expect) is that this setupwizard is killed/bypassed/whatever, but I can't figure out how to do it.
I can get into the emergency number dialer, maybe something is possible from there?

Well, as always, immediately after posting, I made some progress! I booted the phone, and got a low battery warning, from which I could access the settings and enable USB debugging. Now I have ADB toolkit connected again. Also, I went into application settings, to kill and disable all these gapps. I managed to do this for all but one, the biggest problem: setupwizard.apk. Maybe because it's running i can't disable it? The option is greyed out. So when I reboot, I still get the setup wizard that crashes.
However, I do have what i believe is a stock ROM (from a chinese website, hard to be sure, but the name suggests it). Might try to flash that one using adb-toolkit.

Finally managed to fix it using linux shell. Killed the setupwizard task, deleted all gapps from system/app, problem solved.
Still would very much like to have working Gapps though. Hopefully this phone will become more popular outside China, so more people will look into flashing it. I've tried, but I can't do it. No fastboot drivers, and the native flash method (putting update.zip on phoen storage) doesn't work. For now I'll stick with the stock ROM and just use it in it's very limited state.

chance you can put a link to that stock ROM you found?

Root & Flash tool (I suspect):

I am still trying to figure out that romaster tool. Rooting is simple, but i can't manage to flash a ROM. Please keep me updated if you make any progress

Managed to fix everything + install CWM + flash ROM + install google apps. Will make a topic for this phone soon, when I've finished testing everything.
For now, check this one:

Hello Byte_Me,
I've been looking for weeks how to get GApps on my ZTE V965 and tried everything I could, but each time with a different error. Today you made my day to let me know that I'm not the only one with this problem. Since no-one seems to use this device I wasn't able to find any working tutorial to fix Google Apps on this chinese android. I really hope you can tell me soon how you did this, so I can finally move on. Could you please send the link to your topic when you publish it? Thanks in advance and have a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEWYEAR!!!

all info is already in the link you quoted, just not very organized. The topic will take some time, on holidays now.

followed your instructions, now thank god the Google Play works, but the Google search bar and Gmail app are still crashing...
you had similar things ?

sctrach that - just updated the buggy apps through the Google Play.
Woo-hoo!

Nice to hear that, it makes the phone a lot more usable, doesnt it?
Any problems? I am still not satisfied, but I guess it's a work in progress.
Annoyances:
- not recognizing callers, some incompatibilities caused by country prefixes in my address book
- no badge notifications on icons, makes it harder too see missed calls, have to look at status bar
- some other stuff i can't think of now

Tried reading through all the links, still can't get the light to turn green on mtk tools. V 965 is rooted by the Romjd app. Downloaded the rom rated 9.5. Installed the Vcom driver.
Can't load scatter files in sp flash tool..
Quite the noob at this stuff and guidance would be great. I did install ZTE driver when i connected the phone. Was that a mistake?

I never used SP flash tool.
Make sure phone is rooted.
Use MTK tools to install CWM zip package (just follow the instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44660171&postcount=417)
Boot into CWM and install google apps zip package.
I think USB debugging must be switched on in settings.

Ok Thanks, I will try again.
I used SP flash tool because the yellow light never turned green. Which version of MTK Tools did you use?

yo, anybody managed to work with the GPS?

Check with engineer mode that actual gps driver is loaded. Some roms don't have that driver such as lewa5 to my knowledge. Attached a pic below

Color doesn't really matter, in you're rooted you should be able to log into the terminal feature in MTKtool. Try it

Help please
Guys whatever i soft or hard bricked my v965. It's stuck on the opening ZTE logo. I can't get into recovery mode to wipe the cache.
The ZTE drivers are not loading i guess cause its not in usb debugging mode. Been at this hours and i'm lost.
Any advice?

Unable to install Market Apps

I am running the official AT&T Froyo 2.2.2 on my streak. For the past couple of days I get a "Unable to install, please try later" message every time I try to download and install any app from the market. Before this I have downloaded many apps from the market with no problems. Also I am still able to download apps from Amazon app store. I tried clearing the Market cache and Market data but it didn't fix it. I also deleted all apps that I downloaded recently. Still no fix. Does anyone have any ideas, as this is very frustrating? Thanks for any advise.
I recently had a similar issue. All I could do in the end was back up my phone/apps and then re-installed the Rom.If you're already done lots to your phone then this probably isn't what you want to here so just be patient. There's a lot of good helpful folk on here and fingers crossed you should get an answer. There's lots of great stuff to read up on while your waiting.I myself am learning new things daily and so far haven't bricked my Streak.Lol.
Good luck mate.Tris.
P.S. Just a thought but have you tried downloading apps from the official website through your phone or from a PC to see if you get the same error? That may help someone narrow the problem down for you.

You can also download from the market website directly to your phone without the use of the built-in app on your phone by going here :- https://market.android.com/
Just log in with you google account as normal and try a download, you can do this from either your phone web browser or through USB at your PC.

Wow, it does indeed work by downloading directly from the site to my phone! I would still like to figure out why the market app does not work, but it's great to know I can still get the apps. Thank you!!!
If you're phone is rooted and you have a backup of the file 'vending.apk' you could always try re-installing it through a file manager. But I'm afraid that is where my knowledge ends. I'm glad you can still manage downloads via another route, to me that says 'all is not lost yet!'

I don't think so. How do I check?
I have USB Debugging enabled on my phone and have no problems with the Market, so it's something else that is causing the problem.
Well thanks for all the help guys. After several days of this happening with no know reason, it is now suddenly working again for no known reason. I just hope it keeps up.

[Q] p769 - softbricked by noob

i finally figured out how to get CWM installed and working, after a couple of months of fighting with it, off and on. so, i guessed that meant i have my bootloader unlocked - "wrong!".
i deleted some thing that wasn't supposed to be deleted, then the damned cell network and lan network stopped working (keeps saying com.android.phone has stopped). so i was going to put cyanogenmod on it, because i thought that i could, and just be done with the whole "missing apps" crap. it turns out "just because you CAN put CM on it doesn't mean you CAN put CM on it". i bricked it. i have NO options to "load" or "flash" or "boot" any thing when the phone is booting up. i would love some clarification as to what i CAN do from here.
i would rather install CM and be done with all of this, but i'll take any advice that gets rid of the problem. the biggest problem is understanding how to put CM on your phone, or to do any thing at all like that, when you cant get into any kind of recovery / boot menu, even though you ARE rooted... i don't care if i have to install cyanogenmod or some one else's CWM backup, i just don't know HOW to do it - especially with no windows (only linux). it's a rooted p769v20d (originally p769v10g).
thanks

i was going to try some stuff mentioned in other threads, but i don't have access to a windows computer - and i don't think i need to root my phone again any way, considering it is still rooted.

fwiw, regarding the mysterious deleted app:
i lose my internet signal as soon as it says "com.android.phone has stopped", then i get it back again right before it says that message again - it ALSO shows a cell-phone signal right before that message. this repeats over and over and over every few seconds - aggravating as hell...
here's the apps that i still have installed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45774770

Nice thread title. That is how I am feeling right now with this phone. I feel like calling tech care and yell at them for a bit to vent. Anyway, why not install fastboot for Linux and flash the ics u and x? I uploaded my u and x folder in the Unlock Bootloader for Noobs thread. Then, flash the 20h.....oh, dang.... sorry. Forgot.... no Windows. Maybe do the built-in restore by holding the volume down, home and power keys?

thanks, but i think i finally got it working. i never knew, after all this time, that after you do the l9recoveryinstaller, at the reboot, there are no cues to tell when when to hit some buttons, and it's not clear what buttons to hit. here's what i did, and, so far, its progress:
1: be rooted
2: install busy box, completely
3: install l9recoveryinstaller
4: reboot
5: after you see the LG logo, hold vol-down until you see the flashing lights (i thought you see the flashing lights and THEN you hit vol-down, but i was wrong).
still fighting to get a rooted rom installed ...
if i choose "install zip from external sdcard" is says:
"finding update ... opening update ... installing update ...installation aborted".
if i choose "restore" instead of "install" it will not let me select any thing, it just keeps saying file not found, when i try to select any further options, whether "restore" or "restore from external sdcard" or "advanced restore from external sdcard". and i already checked to make sure the sdcard was mounted...

I think your phone bootloader is locked, you cannot flash any custom rom zip file. It will soft brick your phone.
Please restore P769 CWM back from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136204. Download backup file and unbzip it. Put extract files in your sdcard /clockworkmod/backup/2013-08-30.12.00.00 folder. Extract file should contain several .img, .tar, .a, .log and .md5

Well correct me if I am wrong, but I guess you "only" deleted some system files, right? Do you remember which ones were the ones? Or at least the folder they were in? Then you only need to extract that stuff from a kdz/ the bin file and push them on your phone using adb or maybe even the dd command.
Maybe if someone is kind enough, he ll probably provide you with the files you need. And cmiiw, but I guess you deleted stuff from /system/app...

It's depend on what method you use. You can flash kdz using offline method here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2085344
or use LG mobile support tools from LG website. If you choose this you don't need to download any kdz. It'll download kdz automatically from LG server then flash it on your phone. It take about an hour or two.

thats awesome - i wonder if i can get by with using that on wine on linux, instead of borrowing a windows computer... i'm gonna try it...
well, the verdict is in, on this one: i'm screwed. i've tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried, and i can NOT flash this damned phone. it's BRICKED.
i borrowed / hijacked my brother's computer (windows7), all day. i tried a few different things - i even tried the same way i flashed it to update it ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2356536 ), which was worthless to unbrick it.
the problem in every case was that every time the damned flasher got so far along it would "lose the connection to the phone". drivers installed, etc, etc, no difference. i suspect its because i couldnt connect it in all the various modes (mtp ptp etc), since the ONLY way it would connect is in "software upgrade mode".
i had to buy another phone, won't have it till tuesday. lesson learned: NEVER buy a phone that didn't come from samsung... you just can't do what you want with them, without a lot of time, patience, experience, and a windows computer.
thanks for all the help.

Did you try to recover your phone with LG mobile support tool. It can reinstall rom in almost any soft-brick case. Please try it if you haven't try it yet. Many people restore their phone by that software. The steps are
- Download LG mobile support tool from LG web site
- Boot you phone to S/W update mode
- Run Tool and select recover phone
- Wait about 1-2 hours to download and flash
If it's not hardware problem, this should solve your problem

Yes that tool. In my region, it has download link but for P769 it has request repair service.
Download from http://tool.xcdn.gdms.lge.com/client/app/B2CAppSetup.exe

yeah, that's exactly what i did, but it would keep "losing the connection to the phone". not sure why, but i suspect it was a driver issue - and i installed the latest drivers, which made no difference. i also went back and installed older drivers, which made no difference. i must just be lucky as hell, or some thing .

In my country (RO) there are some GSM Repair Centers. You should not give up and you should go to them. Par example, I flashed an HTC Mozart when the battery was dead and I bricked it (idiot, I know). I went to a shop like the ones mentioned above and I think he said that he has to flash the phone using a JTAG or something like that (I know that he has to open the phone to reach it's motherboard, solder some **** out there and... flash I guess). The whole thing was about ~20E. Anyway, keep digging, maybe you'll eventually find something that works for you. If not, go to someone who can "force flash" it and maybe you can save the device.

"Today we called the factory, they told, the iwork8 don't have the function.
The iwork8 tablet itself is a computer, one computer can't connect with another computer with USB cable.
The USB port only have host mode, not have client mode.
Very very sorry for this "
In addition to this, i can't get my PC to see the tablet. I've downloaded drivers but that didn't help, as th pc can't see it. Do you have this issue as well?
I read on the chinese forum http://bbs.51cube.com/en/forum.php of a rom with root that fixes it. I think thats what it said, it doesn't translate well… I'm still trying to decipher it all.

Thanks for your help
thanks for link. I'll try it later....after I try padnet-if padnet doesn't work.
Somewhere, can't find it anymore.. I read someone was able to get the drivers installed using padnet. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1983470
I haven't had the chance to try it, but I will.
Here is the link for the ROM/Root thread in the Chinese forum. Notice it is for the iwork8 super edition. But as best as I can tell, it works for our's too. But don't take my word for it, lol. Do some research there first..

If we can get USB debugging on, I feel we can root with Social Design concepts root package for intel devices here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/intel-android-devices-root-temp-cwm-t2975096 I used it on my dell Venue8 ASO. worked great.
keep me informed. I'll do the same for you.
thanks!

ps. yes, I have already tried rooting with his package. Since the device isn't recognized, and usb debugging isn't on, nothing happens. I tried all 3 triggers.

When I told you about " I cannot translate correctly..." I meant google translation.Chinese to Greek translation is useless.
I have asked for help in http://freaktab.com.This site has "cube tablet forum".
I tried pdanet....it needs usb debugging,as well
Lol. Oh. Yes, google translate isn't very good with chinese. It takes some figuring out.
I have an account on freaktab. I looked through the forum there, didn't see anything. I'll check it out again, maybe one of the developers there can make us something we need.

So far,it seems nothing is a ready-solution for us.Except probaply from that chinese custom ROM.But we need translation for this
If you know any developer anywhere who could make something suitable for us,then ask him for a custom rooted ROM.But how we would install this rooted ROM without debugging? The chinese ROM in your link, how is installed?
The only think I made.,was to boot in SAFE MODE by pressing(if I remember) VOL- while android OS was booting.Did you manage anything else?
Also,win8.1 OS allows mobile data…… that is nice and we must not loose it
Waiting for hopefull news
:good:
The custom rom is flashed ('brushed' is 'Flashed' translated by google) with a flashing tool specifically for our cube tablet. A lot of tablets use flashing tools, there's one for ainol tablets, tablets with rockchips ((my hisense vidaa is rk3288), just two examples. When the rom isn't a flashable zip. So, based on what I was able to decipher, this tool loads the .Img files individually, therefore you replace the factory .Img file/files with the modified ones that root the tablet. Also, I believe the modified ones added or removed some apps. Not sure what else was changed. I didn't read anything about a custom recovery. I believe, but not sure, the modified system.Img file you flash in the tool has usb debugging enabled. <------ I think.
I could not get into recovery or fastboot. Only safe mode. Which appeared useless.
Till later!
thanks for keeping me in the loop.

Do you think you could flash this ROM with success?
Probably youre waiting for replies on your web-questions before trying this chinese solution
Till now,no more news.
First, I have to figure out how to download the package, then decipher the tutorials, install the tools needed, then yes, the plan is to flash it.
It could take me a few days…

Till today no respond from Cube company or forum community.......Im waiting
fastboot
Hi ail3iou, last night i was able to find fastboot using the power and both volume keys together. But it only brings up the screen for a few seconds, then the tablet boots up.
Can you try it for me, please, and see if it responds the same way for you?
Place your finger right in the center of the volume key and press, this presses both + and - at the same time, and then the power button too. Hold them down. First you' ll see cube in chinese, the screen goes black, then small white letters that say "entering x?? Mode. Waiting on fastboot commamds" then for me, it dissappears and the tablet boots.
I've tried a few fancy finger movememts trying to keep it in fastboot, but no luck. See what you get.
....
l tried what you told me and I got exactly the same things,as you.
I had tried some movements before and I had noticed this notification but I ignored it,as the tablet boots normally in the end.
Noone responded to my email messages.Still waiting...

Can't flash neither root after flashing new rom.

Hello,
I recently switched to kitkat but after flashing I realised that the stock rom has too much bloatware and was practically very annoying to use (I'm looking at you, Norton and LeSave.
Now here's my problem:
I can't flash anything anymore using flashtool, it detects my phone, loads one file, but then goes down to 0bytes/0bps and it keeps hanging there untill I get an error. I tried to get a workaround by rooting and installing TWRP it but nothing works, it refuses to root.
Can anyone help me? I don't know what I did wrong and I'm afraid I messed up my partitions or something.
I just want to go back to Jellybean with a clean rom, no bloatware, preferrably rooted.
Thanks in advance,
Biscuit
Errors I get:
''BROM ERROR: S_FT_READBACK_FAIL (4009)''
Google didn't get me any further ):

You messed up everything!
Hmmm... you need a custom firmware if you want something light !
Like life 0.7 !
If you want a custom made firmware fot the chinese base but without bloatware and rooted you can try Baralajbi firmware.
Good Luck.

I have the same exact problem...
I am trying to flash Baralajbi firmware but it goes down to 0bytes/0bps and it keeps hanging there until I get an error.
How can we flash anything (as you advice) if Flash tools do not work?
Partitions are really messed up. In the recovery menu ("No command" screen with dead android ) I am trying the "apply update from sdcard" option , and it redirects me to the internal memory!
Chinese phone , tried P780_ROW_S228 rom but it is laggy and cellural reception is poor ! Gps malfunctioning also...

Hi. Try this. Retry to flash but this time when flash tool do nothing, open the back cover of your phone and keep the red button pressed for 20 seconds. When you release the button flashing process should start.
Tell me if not.
If not... Reinstall the drivers... and repeat the flashing process.

Open "Device Manager" on your Windows PC.
Plug in your phone through the micro USB cable. A device will show up for a few seconds in "Device Manager". After that, it will disappear again!
Recognize the device tree where it appeared, and wait for it as you unplug and plug in your phone again (if bootloop, its automatic!)
Catch it with a right click as it appears! Then choose "Update Drivers" and pick the directory where you uncompressed the drivers you downloaded above. Its ok if after catching it the device disconnects. You only need to install the drivers now.
Assuming the drivers are correctly installed, run the Smart Phone Flash Tool.

Stuck in setup with missing files and can't get stock ROM to flash

I beat my head against this for about eight hours yesterday and am at my wit's end. Thanks in advance for any help.
The short version: After rooting my Blue VIvo 5, installing a few apps and setting Nova Launcher as my launcher, I started getting some errors. Apps would fail mysteriously or not launch at all. Reinstalling the apps didn't help. I tried to take an OS update that the phone said was available, but when I tried to update it said the system was damaged and I couldn't install the update.
Well, I thought naively, I'll just remove all my user data and start over. That will restore the original ROM and I'll just start over, right?
BIG mistake.
Now when I try to start up my phone the sequence goes like this:
1. I get a popup that says "Unfortunately, Carefree Launcher has stopped."
2. After clearing that popup I can choose my language.
3. Next I go tot he screen where I choose my wireless connection. Choosing the connection works, but the next screen where I put in my password only allows me to speak - there's no keyboard option. The only time during the process I really laughed was when I saw what Google's voice recognition software tried to enter for the wifi password.
4. I managed to get the password entered by using the OTG dongle and a USB keyboard. After that, though, it goes to the "Checking for updates" screen, at which point it tells me "Unfortunately, Google Play Services has stopped." Then it loops back to the "choose your network" screen.
5. Lather, rinse, repeat.
I managed to get TWRP installed and running, but the stock ROM file I found on another thread (BLU_V0050UU_V09_REPAIR.zip) won't install. SP Flasher (which I also tried) throws a message about a mismatched baseband unit of some kind, and TWRP says there's a file called META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary missing from the archive.
So here I am, asking the community what I can do short of laying out $200 for another phone. I might be able to install the AOSP or CM12 ROMs that are in this forum, and I might do that if I have to replace the phone anyway, but if there's a way to restore the phone to its initial OOB state, I would love to know how to do it.
Again, thanks for any help you can give me.
Update, 16 hours later: I had a flash of inspiration this morning. Since it looked like at any rate I was going to have to get another phone I went ahead and ordered the replacement for same-day delivery. It arrived this afternoon, I unboxed it, set it up and backed it up with "adb backup". Then, I tried to restore the backup onto the bricked phone.
You guessed it. I never saw a notification that the backup was loading. It was the same wifi network, check for updates, broken google play loop again.
So unless someone has a brilliant idea as to how to restore the original firmware, I am going to keep the old bricked phone around and try installing aosp or cm12 on it, whichever looks like it's further along. Maybe both. Why not?
Anyway cheers.
Do you not know how to use SP Flash Tool?
Download the original rom + SP Flash Tool from elsewhere in this forums and flash it. The one for the Gionee S6 or A55 slim on the Marshmallow thread will do. I think someone has posted the original vivo 5 ROM somewhere as well.
Basic steps are open SP Flash Tool.
Load the scatter file (comes with the rom). This will fill a lot of fields in the flash screen (boot, recovery, logo, system, userdata, etc.).
Do not change anything. Click "Start"—this will wipe your phone. If you don't want it wiped, disable the "userdata" field.
Connect your phone properly turned off.
It should detect your phone right away.
Wait for the flash to end.
Disconnect your phone and turn it on.
Should boot alright.
If it doesn't detect your phone, see in Device Manager if your phone is properly recognized. If it's not, download the MediaTek PreLoader USB VCOM drivers.

Thank you for your reply. In answer to your quesiton: Maybe not. Everybody starts somewhere, and while I have quite a few years of experience in desktop computers, I'm still learning the world of Android. I've flashed quite a few Kindle Fire tablets (that's the origin of my user name, 'nerdfire') but this has been my first experience with a phone.

I've got SP Flash running, but it's the Linux version. which I think is the same, as Windows except that it looks like there's a "Download" button rather than a "Start" button. Unless I'm missing something, which could easily be.
I followed the directions above, not checking "userdata", and hit "Download." No response from the program for over 30 minutes. I eventually found the timeout setting, lowered it to 2 minutes, and ran the program from a console window. The console output indicated that SP Flash was finding the proper USB port, but then nothing. No communication with the phone and the program eventually timed out.
It could be a lack of drivers. Linux comes with drivers for most common USB devices baked in, but this might not be one of them. Thanks for the hint - I'll check when I get home later tonight.
Again, I appreciate the help.

I have no experience flashing with Linux, but that definitely looks like lack of the right drivers. Maybe following this tutorial will work for you: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ge...torial-how-to-setup-spflashtoollinux-t3160802
The thread says you need to know the specific way to boot up after connecting the cable, depending on the phone. On the Vivo, my experience is that you don't need to press anything, just connecting the cable with the phone powered off will do. However, if you happen to brick your phone by flashing something wrong, or interrupting a flash, you'll need to press volume down upon connecting the cable.

I did a little digging and won't go through all the gory details, but the long and short of it was, after removing a package in my Linux distribution that was interfering with accessing the serial port, I was able to flash the stock ROM onto the phone. So I am good to go. Plus, now I have a good idea of how to start over again if necessary
