[TUTORIAL] Apps 2 SD using Link2SD - Xperia SP Android Development

Hello again my friends Hoping this will help a lot of you even though its easy i am creating this tutorial for all those people out there who are not confident with using Link2SD.
Read the Pros And Cons at the bottom of the thread to see if this mod suits your needs
Link2Sd is a simple and FREE app (thank the developer for that) that transfers apps to a partition* of your SD card to free up internal SD space.
* When you split your SD card into 2 or more pieces those pieces are named partitions.(Sorry for that awful explanation .My English knowledge cant cover the meaning of partition so here is a link to wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_partitioning
What you need to do this:
Rooted Device (In this Case Xperia SP)(Here is a guide i made for rooting the newest firmware for Xperia SP : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2407017 and here is the original thread by Doomlord http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2405933

Partitioned SD Card (Here is a freeware program so you can partition your SD http://download.cnet.com/MiniTool-Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html
If you dont know how to partition your SD card here is a guy i found http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning
Tutorial Start
Partition your SD card (Using the tutorial above)
Download Link2SD from Playstore link provided
Open the application
Select File System (Thats the file system you chose when you partitioned your SD ) (Example File Systems : FAT32 , FAT , Ext2,Ext3,Ext4...)
Your device will reboot now
After it boots get open the app and you will be able to move apps to your SD *
To move an app you select the app
Do NOT press Move to SD card!!!!!
Select "Create link"
Then you check what works for you **
And then press OK
* If you can NOT create a link to your SD then you must have selected the wrong File System. To reset your choise press the button near the Link2SD logo (dropdown menu button) and select "Recreate mount scripts".
** If you want to transfer the app plus its cache file and its librady files check all 3 choises.
If you dont want the library files linked uncheck the third choise ("Link library files")
I personaly recommend checking all 3 choises.
Multiple App Link
You can also use Link2SD to link multiple apps at once.
To do that you just follow this :
Open the app
Press the menu button
Select "Multi-Select'
Check the apps you want to link (or all of them)
Press the menu button (te three dot button)
Select "Create Link"
Check the things you want to link
Press "OK"
Done
To Sum Up
+ Pros of using this app
Free's up a lot of Internal Space
Fast and Simple to use
- Cons of using the app
You lose storage space from your External SD
The booting process takes a lot longer
Some apps wont run when they are linked to SD (like Ski Safari)

[Q]SD-EXT - General description of use

Hi,
I looked on forum for some summary what is general use of SD-ext partition.
So far I found some explanations and some solutions for CM ROMs.
So, if I uderstand correctly, I can use sd-ext
- either as seamless extension of internal partitions (/data, /system, /cache), for more storage
- and/or for installing apps on SD card, that work when SD card is connected to PC ass mass storage
Is it right?
I am on AOKP ROM, I tried to use it for moving apps with Link2SD and Android Assistent, but they tried to move apps to sdcard.
So, what is correct use of sd-ext and how to make it with AOKP? Mainly I want to extend internal storage (384MB)
I think you need to have a ext3 partition in the SD...
try this method...

Ok so I am gonna make an easy guide. But befor i start i will say the requirements
Requirements
1.Rooted
2.Busybox installed(v19.4 reccomended)
4.Card reader
So here we are.
1.Download MiniTool Partition
2.Remove the sd-card from phone and put it in a card reader and plug in pc.
4.Select only important files like Pictures, Music , Titanium and clockworkmod backups and all that important stuff for you
5.Copy them to a folder in computer.
6.Install MiniToolPartition and open it.
7.You will see your hard drives and your sd card.
8. Right click on sd card and click delete. Then again right click and Create.
9.Select "File System:" FAT when you have 2GB or smaller card.
Select "File System:" FAT32 when you have 4GB or greater card.
10.Dont select the whole volume. Select for example if you have 4GB card select 3GB if you want your sd-ext to be 1GB
11.When you are done.Again right click on the sd card and create ext2 or ext3 partition. Then select the full volume allwoed.
12.Make sure that this volume is enough for all apps on your phone.
13.Whn you are done click on the apply button on the top left corner. Wait for it to finish. When you are done. Copy teh prevously backed up data to the card.
14.Put it on the phone and on the market download Link2SD
15.Run the app and it will ask for root. Then select your tipe of partition. tehn reboot.
16.After reboot go to the app and you can mult iselect your apps with the options menu. Then in actions.Click Create link. Then ok.
17.You are done. Now you have a cleaner sd and initial storage
FAQ:
Q:What is sd-ext partition.
A: Its a tipe of partiton than linux supports so Android can use it as an initial memory.
Q:Why i dont see more space when i go to Apps in phones settings
A:The phone cant display sd-ext partiton. you can view it via Link2SD.(Otions>Storage info)

I used MiniTool Partition Wizard but Neo couldn't find it.
Luckily I found this http://www.butonic.de/2012/03/14/partitioning-the-sd-card-for-app2ext-with-adb-shell/ and was able to fdisk my sdcard from putty connected to sshdroid. Now SD is correctly formatted and Link2SD created mount script.
I can't tell if it works or no. From what I expect, there should be more MB when I look at Settings -> Storage, because Link2SD extends my internal storage... but there is still the same ~420MB.
Can it be that Link2SD silently moves new apps to /sd-ext, but internal storage is still the same?

although phone settings doesn't display about sd-ext you may see that amount of free storage increases as you create links with link2sd. I've attached two screenshots showing one before linking asphalt and anti terror shooter to sd-ext and after linking.
I had the same problem with minitool. then I used CWM to partition the sd.

It depends on the kernel which file format it supports.
The FAQs from link2sd says that fat 32 is supported by every Android / kernel for SD ext partition.
This is my still unused SD ext fat 32 partition.
So if you are not sure fat 32 should always do the work. By the way mini partition tool works great.
Send from my Neo V with JJHybrid 3.3b and Night Elf 1.4 using Tapatalk 2
use ext 2
ext3 and 4 didnt work on my neo
Hi,
I used Link2SD for some time. I had some troubles with ROM - random reboots, YT not working etc
I stopped using Link2SD, because I tried to eliminate everything "unnatural".
At the end, I changed ROM from AOKP to Paranoid and it solved all these troubles (there are some new ones )
Now, then I installed Link2SD and try to create mount script, Link2SD fails with "Mounting script cannot be created"
what do you suggest? reformat card partition? I would like to re-link apps that are there.

Yeah, you're right. It is still a little of mystery for me, but hey, I learn to use it
Anyway, Minitool IS great, but when I formatted a card with it, phone couldn't read it. So I had to use ssh to phone.

[Q] Moving app Data to External SD card

Hi Guys,
I have karbonn A15 android ICS(4.0.4) smartphone, its not rooted.
I want to move the app Data to my external sd card, i tried to move the data folder from the internal SD (android/data) to External SD (root folder), just to check whether it releases any memory in the storage section in phone settings. but the internal storage was same, there was no change, can anyone tell me where does the app data resides in the internal memory, its fine if i can move app data manually to the external sd card.
I also want some clarification on below questions:
1. Also i want to know whether there is any risk rooting phone like (Bricking Phone), as i have bricked my previous Galaxy Ace when i rooted and used ROM manager.
2. Also i have heard about Folder Binding app which automatically transfers App Data to External Sd Card, is there any risk of bricking phone.
3. Whats the easiest method to root Karbonn A15 phone, i am not that tech savvy, so easiest method would be grateful in rooting device.
My concern is just to move App Data to External Sd Card, because i have some app whose Data increase very frequently (E.g: FireFox app).
Answers to this would be really appreciated.

Rooting:
here are the steps
the driver files are included on the phone internal card called pcdrivers.zip. you can connect the usb mount the internal usb storage and copy the file to your pc. if you face any problems you can download the file from here
1. Enable USB Debugging -> Under SETTINGS -> DEVELOPER OPTIONS
2. Install the drivers for the phone.
3. download "Android Root Unlock" from sourceforge.net and extract it to your Disktop
4. navigate to the above folder and run the batch file ICS_Root_Unlocker.bat
the batch file will reboot your phone a couple of times and will wait with a message "Press Any Key to continue"
IMPORTANT NOTE : if you PC is saying "PRESS ANY KEY" note if your phone is on or rebooting....
if it is Rebooting, wait for it to start before pressing a key
5. After a couple of boots the phone will be rooted
6. verify that the Root is complete by observing a "Superuser" shortcut in the application list
Moving Apps:
Once rooted, download Folder Mount From the Play Store
- Once installed, open FolderMount and grant superuser access when asked.
- In FolderMount, you have the options to:
- Name your folder (IE: "Generic Game 1")
- Select the "Source" Folder (the one on your local storage)
- Select the "Destination" Folder (the one on your SD Card)
When you enter these details, it will then move them to your SD Card!
I highly recomend FolderMount Pro, because it also shows you filesizes when browsing.
Common Locations of Large Files:
Two common locations for games (IE: Gameloft games, EA Games, etc.)
Android/data
Android/obb
I know it's not the easiest process ever, but hopefully I've explained it enough to get people started.

Is there any method/app that can provide a similar functionality without rooting the phone? I tried rooting my Karbonn A21 without success and do not really want to brick it?
Also is there any way of backing up the phone and app data before rooting? Will the existing apps and data be wiped out by rooting?
Thanks in advance.

You can use App2SD but you have to check if your device is compatible or not.
you can use Kies to backup your apps, settings, etc.

Use apps2sd ........it is compatible with A15

foldermount
so quick question, i transferred games to external sd, worked fine and all, but after a while my games asked me to download the files again, anyone know a solution?
I m using foldermount but there is write error mention that was unable to write into the external sdcard caused by a permission issue where normal apps are not able to write anything into storage/ext_sd. What should I do next to solve this problem? Attempt to recover using the apps not solving it.
This is what i mean.
Moving app Data to External SD card
in particular the movement of android apps data from internal memory to SD card is a simple process, but the problem with these issues is your smartphone is to be a latest version like 4.3 version.
Idea
Can I move the game folders from Internal Storage: Android/data -> SD card: Android/data, will it work on non rooted phone? In the Data folder on the SD card are partition of some apps and they work just fine. Same with folder "obb".
moving apps data and obb to External sdcard.
I recommend using an app called folder mount. ..it needs root but it's as easy as fishing in a barrel. .. I am using It and it works fine... and now you have a clear space in your internal storage.
Hey, I followed above instructions and my phone Samsung S5 6.0.1 successfully rooted, but now I've entered into an endless restarting loop.
Please help what's the problem might be?

Rooting - Swipe MTV Slate
I just brought an Swipe MTV Slate tablet, the specs were amazing albeit the memory! I'm posting this as reply since i'm new here and forbidden to create a new thread. Hopefully helps someone
Steps for Root
Note: I used this approach since my tablet was not being recognized on Windows (maybe a cable problem) but OTG works fine. This is one of the easiest way of rooting your tablet. You can even revert the root later if you need to.
1. Get Framaroot 1.8.1
2. Download & Install Framaroot using tool like Airdroid
3. Run the app and choose the Boromir exploit - After success message restart the tablet.
4. If you are connected(wifi), you will see SU app being updated or check if the app has been installed
5. Check with a root checker app to be double sure
Steps for putting your apps on External SD
1. Install Link2SD and FolderMount - Both require root
2. Put your SD card on a laptop card reader and use MiniTool Partition Wizard on Windows(or similar tool)
> Create Partition 1 with approx. 70-80% space (Mine was 28 GB) - This is where you will finally put your application data/obb files etc
> Create Partition 2 with approx. 20-30% space (4 GB) - This is where you will finally move your applications(apk, cache etc)
> Both should be FAT32, i had problems with ext2 & ext4 but some posts say Partition 2 performs better with ext2/ext4 - you should try this.
3. Insert SD card in tablet and open Link2SD
4. Link2SD should give a popup asking you type of Partition 2 of SD - choose FAT32. It should give a success message.
5. Reboot Tablet and open Link2SD, you should not get the popup again - this means setup was successful
6. Follow/Search for other posts on how to use Link2SD for moving apps to Partition 2
7. Follow/Search for other posts on how to use FolderMount for moving app data to Partition 1
Note: Partition 2 will not be visible on Android > Settings > Storage but you can see it in some tool like ES File Explorer or even in Link2SD settings.
Hope it helps someone.:fingers-crossed:

i don't know this will work or not but i just want to help you.
first do nandroid backup of ur rom. search for cwm recovery for ly f1 which will work on swipe tablet and do nandroid backup or else you can use titanium backup. you can flash roms released for ly f1 they will work on your tablet.you can flash cynogenmod, jellybean 4.1 by seby, reactor rom etc.
nandroid backup is very important because you may found few bugs after flashing new rom that was not ment for your tablet.
hope this still works

[GUIDE] Increase Internal Storage! SD-EXT [NOOB FRIENDLY] [ROOT]

Hello Folks! Did you ever wanted to increase internal storage? Well you came to the right place! Today I will show you the RIGHT way of increasing internal storage and allowing you to install more apps and games!
Note: You will need to be running an custom ROM before attempting to increase storage. Also root and superuser permissions will be needed. This method best works on gingerbread as it is more stable, I have tried it on ICS and JB but they may soft brick your device.
Step 1: Download and install MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition [DO NOT USE THE WINDOWS PARTITION AS IT DOES NOT SUPPORT EXT FORMATS]
Step 2: Plug your device in and make sure its mounted. Open MiniTool Partition Wizard, now you should see your SD card. [Back everything up before continuing]
Step 3: Right click on the SD card and click on "Format". This may take a while.
Step 4: Right click again and wipe the partition. Once that is done, split the partition. If you have a 8GB SD card I recommend you give 900MB for SD-EXT and the rest for SD.
Step 5: Before you apply, make the second partition (sd-ext) EXT 3 format. Do not touch the larger partition. Once your done you can unplug your device from the computer.
It should look like this:
Step 6: Go over to the Play Store and download "Mounts2Sd"
Step 7: Run the application and it should ask for super user rights
Step 8: Hopefully you will be presented with a screen like this.
Step 9: Press the menu button then tap on "Application Settings." Then tap "Install Mounts Script"
Step 10: Once step 9 is complete, tap the wrench icon and select apps and dalvik cache. (best effective way to increase internal storage)
Step 11: Scroll down and find "Driver" tap on that and select "Auto Detect"
Step 12: Restart! [NOTE: Boot may take a little longer than usual] [The speed on boot up now mainly depends on your SD card]
Now you are done! Here it what mine looks like now! So what ever you install, will go into the SD-EXT partition. Dalvik Cache is also now in SD-EXT!
I hope I helped you!
Just wondering...
Hi there, I have a s5830 as well. I installed quite a number of apps in it but the internal storage is almost full. I have found this way of increasing the internal storage on many sites. But my question is, will it really work? I have read comments about this method. Most of the people say it just spoils your sd card. Let me know what you think. Thanks

Isn't this pretty similar to Link2SD?
Wait I'm getting confused. Are these two the similar thing? If so how do you configure it? I installed link2sd and have partitioned my sd card. From here what are the procedures to expand your internal storage? Thx
Thank you friend! Helped me a lot!
About your statement...
Still man even you want it with mount2sd or link2sd still can't fully free up your internal memory coz still left some private apk that cost more on internal even that's been moved with any you named it mount2sd link2sd app2sd or with script and blahx2.... etc still there is no best method that work on freeing memory that also don't forget about statement that more app u can install more that u build cache or dalvik cache even that running front or background that also consumed your RAM issued even after you swap RAM To sd card that's finally broke your SD so That"s the end of it so if you have better solutions could you please send me email to [email protected] Thanks again.... cheers....

These two are similar in that they could make use of the partitioned sector of the sd card (known as the sd-ext) to act as additional "internal storage" for installing apps and works similarly as the phone internal memory. With the additional storage you could install more apps.
The above two are also similar in that they require init.d support and busy box. Most custom ROM normally are init.d supported and stock ROM's init.d support could be tested or added with app as per this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933849
Here are tutorials for Mount2SD and Link2SD.

Samsung Galaxy Ace memory related problem
Dear All,
I have a problem to solve regarding my Samsung Ace S-5830 (with built in 270 MB !!! internal memory) installed on a CM11.
Small description:
SD card partitioned (1st: 5.7 GB FAT32, 2nd: 1.4GB ext2) into the device (all memory: 270 MB, internal: 178MB !!!) I have already installed Link2SD application, linked a few applications (App. cache cleaner, disk usage, Google play services, Total commander) -> SD card
My storage usage status according to Link2SD:
internal (/data) 130/178 MB
SD card (storage/sdcard0: 97% free
SD card 2nd part (/data/sdext2): 90% free
system (/system): 205/206 MB 0% free -> it seems to me it completely full. I think the install script determines the space, I don't know whether it is the proper status
cache(/cache):4/24 Mb 82 %
I have already cleaned caches a few times. When I want to install a 20 MB or so application (i.e Accuweather ) from Google Play than the application downloaded, the install procedure seemingly finished, but at the end of the process the error message:
Can't install app
Insufficient storage available
Which storage insufficient? Where is the app downloading to? Where is the Google play store cache? Is it configurable? How can I solve/improve the situation?
In general devices have remarkable internal memory (at least 1-2GB) instead of Samsung Ace. How can I overcome this disadvantage? Thank you for your valuable support.
KR,
Laszlo.

[Guide] How To Increase Internal Memory Of Android

Here is a N00b friendly Guide for increasing Internal memory of any android device..
PS : In anyway i am not responsible for bricked devices but still i will help you in every possible way.
Requirements :
1) pc
2) rooted android device
3) memory card 4gb+ and class 4+
4) Brain. ( Download Link not available... )
This could also Reduce life span of your memory card. ( But i guess its worth for removing out of space notification and problems )
Downloads :
Mini Tool Partition Wizard for PC: http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
Link2sd App : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.buak.Link2SD
Procedure :
Connect your sd card to pc via a card reader. Dont Connect it with Usb mass storage via device!
Open Mini tool partition wizard for pc in Mini tool parition mode.
Go to Your Disc ( sd card ) and right click it and delete it.
Now Right Click on it and click Create.
In the create. Name Anything in partition label ( for ex : Memory Card, You can leave it blank also.) Click Create As and set it from logical to primary. Click file system and set it as Fat32. Now This partition is for your usage, like Songs, videos, etc. Now set its Size. For Example I am using 4 gb memory card. So i will reduce its partition to 3 gb for 1 gb of Internal memory. Set its size to how much you want. ( check out the screenshots attached for more help).
Now you will see one more partition Unallocated in your memory card just below your Fat32 partition.
Right Click the Unallocated Partition, And click create.
Leave the partition label blank. Click Create As and change it to Primary. Click File System and Set it to EXT2. Leave the rest as it is. ( check the screenshot).
Save Changes.
Insert Memory card into the android phone and open Link2SD app.
The App will ask for your second partition. Select ext2 and click ok. Now reboot.
Now open Link2sd. Click on any app say for example Facebook and Click create link. tick all the dialogue boxs that appear next.
Link all the apps and see the difference!!
Enjoy! IF you liked my first post and i helped Press the thanks button that would be enough!

Remember this rule for extension size. U need to have 100 mb free memory in phone per every 500 mb extention! so in that case assuming you have 1gb free.. than you can extend upto 5 gb approx. and if you have to eject memory card never do it directly phone will crash.... switch off the phone and than eject it . Merry Christmas!
Sent from my XT1033 using XDA Free mobile app
Thanks and i wiil try it
