Back in late August mine came MDK, the gold of Verizon S4's (can bypass bootloader and do EVERYTHING!).... other than Dev edition... I guess that'd be platinum actually XD

Well you're most like gonna get one running mj7 or mk2 which means you can root then install safestrap which isn't a custom recovery but it's still a gift Hashcode has given us .

As of right now yes. TW based and they must be based on our phones version too ie: mj7 mk2 etc
Hey its better than nothing! And actually there are a couple others in the works too. There's also still a talented group of devs looking into unlocking or bypassing our locked down bootloader too.

I hear that. It's a tough call. I can say after flashing all sorts of aosp roms onto my RAZR that I actually don't mind TW . I like the fact that it's extremely stable not too many bugs like I had before and we're actually getting really good performance. But I know it's a matter of personal preference.
The S4 is still a beast!

While I agree the S4 is a beast (When it works properly) I don't feel like getting a plethora of replacement devices,
Like I did w/ my S3 and the phone before that.
When I stop getting 4G signal and start getting only 3G and 1X on EVERY rom. I know there's an issue w/ the HW. Samsung has some very decent screens and cameras, which is why I buy their devices, but lacking long term performance is very annoying.
You know?

That's a catch22
New phone = no AOSP rom, BUT less problems.
Current Device = No decent Signal or performance, BUT AOSP rom.

Verizon S4 Rooting and Custom ROMS

I'm looking to buy either the S4 or the Moto X through Verizon. My droid incredible 2 has been running custom ROMs for two years now, and I have grown used to the "stock" android experience. Would it be possible to run kit kat on the s4 via a custom rom? Could someone comment on the overall state of development for the S4 that is on Verizon?

If you can get your hands on one that still has MDK, then you'll be all set. Otherwise, if Cyanogenmod is that important to you, you should stay away from the S4.
Or get developer edition and run just about anything out there. Saves a bunch of headaches.

I recently bought a Gs4 on verizon running the latest 4.3 mk2 software and I hate touchwiz. Its just so packed with useless stuff that makes the phone slow. Since I cannot install a custom recovery on this phone I was thinking of trading it for an lg g2 and wiping the os and installing kit kat on it from cyanogen mod. What do you guys think should I do the trade?

You'll have to define "slow." My S4 on the stock unrooted ROM was not what I'd consider to be slow. Rooted on Hyperdrive, it is not slow. I had a Blackberry Storm. That was slow.
KitKat is scheduled to be released this month or next for this phone. I would imagine that our devs will have custom ROMS fairly quickly afterward, if there's not a leak released before.
You might be better posting your question in the G2 forum. You'll probably find more people there with experience on both phones.
There are a lot of nice ROMS for safestrap users... I'm on MK2 ..currently running foxhound diamond dogs and eclipse. Both are pretty close to a aosp experience ( I also despise touchwiz)

I agree with charliepan69. I would safestrap flash a ROM before making the switch
I would keep my S4. LG sucks. The LG g2 looks nice but I'm sure there isn't much development for that device. Pretty soon I'm sure someone will figure out how to flash aosp roms. I remember running safestrap when I had the DROID RAZR and devs made aosp roms compatible with safestrap

I'm with you there... I had the RAZR too. I've thought about the g2 a few times as well and just couldn't do it. By the sounds of it kexec for SafeStrap may be close to coming out and that would change everything. There were a ton of aosp ROMs for the razr I'm sure the s4 will have even more. I couldn't wait myself that's why I just got rid of the mj7 s4.

Touchwiz does suck
Just throw a different launcher on it. I'm running Apex pro. It's quick... usually have between 700 and 800 megs free memory. Not exactly what I'd call a slow phone. I looked at getting the G2 when I got this S4. Very happy with the choice.
Another good point. I use Nova on any an all ROMs I use. I'd say apex an Nova would be the two to choose from in my opinion

Definitely safestrap it and stick with the S4 for now.....
S4 slow? You must've been using Nova, apex, or whatever launcher people use nowadays. My stock unrooted is screaming fast...

No way, there's a huge delay in touch response when tapping an icon. I guess I'm one of the only ones who can notice that. I even bought the prime version a while back and don't use it because I can't stand the lag.

I do not experience that with nova. Although I'll agree stock launcher is faster just because it was optimized for the phone, especially with animations off, but nova is plenty fast and worth having real control over the lajncher

Well I really think it depends on the ROM... and the settings etc. As well.
I'm running Liquid Smooth with Nova right now. and I have no delay at all with touch response and it was so fast I ended up slowing things down a little so I could enjoy the animations from xuimod as well.
Like I said it depends if u ask me.

You must have too much apps running, hold down on the home button for like 3 second and then let go. Close all of the apps you don't need by swiping them to the side. Then see how fast your s4 is. I had my s4 for at least 3 month now, still as fast as out the box (until i rooted and flashed it, now it's even faster with greenify).

Rom Recommendation

My husband's HTC One has been acting up.. no wifi... powers on when it feels like it... and yesterday, he cracked his screen. So it's time to revive the old Droid RAZR until he's eligible for an upgrade.
So I'd like to get recommendations on which ROM is the most stable/reliable at the moment. My husband doesn't need anything fancy.. he's not big on technology/rooting... good battery life is important.
It's currently rooted with 4.1.2. If I use a 4.4 rom, can I upgrade directly to 4.4 if I do a clean install?
Look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Phone is a Verizon xt912
So after browsing around... I see that I need Safestrap installed.
I installed v 3.73 and installed Recovery. Just waiting on feedback now.

Yes. Install CM11 (or whatever ROM you like) into slot 1 and enjoy. You'll still have the original ROM in the stock slot if you want to switch back so it is pretty risk free!
I'll just throw in my two cents and say the SlimKat build 6 is a very good ROM. The only issue I've found is it won't send MMS. I just switch back to stock ROM to do that. A little bit of a hassle, but the benefits of the ROM far out weigh the inconvenience. Hope this helps!
EDIT: MMS works, I just had configured it incorrectly.
ROM recommendations
If you are looking for KitKat ROM's that are stable and normally run smoothly without major issues, my recommendations are Paranoid Android and CM11. CM11 has more options and gets more frequent updates but Paranoid Android is pretty streamlined and smooth and the current versions look and feel more like a straight stock Android system . If you are looking for a lot of options and things to tweak then PacMan ROM is nice.
As for battery life Paranoid Android may be a little better. Of course using a dark theme like thyrus dark ui, keeping screen brightness low and going into the advanced WiFi settings along with a few other things will really improve battery life.

No Data Using Unofficial CM11 on Sprint Mega

I have tried using the unofficial CM11 for the i9205 for the Sprint Galaxy Mega. I understand unofficial means that this is not the actual CM developed rom and I understand that will bring certain functionality problems to the phone. I also understand the rom is intended for use on the i9205 but from what I'm seeing people are using i9205 root methods and roms on the SPH-L600. I'd love to use CM11 on the Sprint Mega seeing this phone doesn't seem to get as much love as the other Galaxy models. What can I do to get this working or what do I need to do if anyone can point me in the right direction.
Currently I am rooted with Philz using stock rom 4.4.2 modded with Xposed.
Im in the same boat you are. Hopefully someone can make a Sprint rom soon. Im having "flashing" withdrawals. Lol

I've been on Samsung for many years and have grown accustomed to Touch Wiz roms. I ran AOSP for a while when Touch Wiz was new and really sucked. But now it only sucks a little bit so I'm fine with it.
