need your opinion please - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I recently bought a Gs4 on verizon running the latest 4.3 mk2 software and I hate touchwiz. Its just so packed with useless stuff that makes the phone slow. Since I cannot install a custom recovery on this phone I was thinking of trading it for an lg g2 and wiping the os and installing kit kat on it from cyanogen mod. What do you guys think should I do the trade?

You'll have to define "slow." My S4 on the stock unrooted ROM was not what I'd consider to be slow. Rooted on Hyperdrive, it is not slow. I had a Blackberry Storm. That was slow.
KitKat is scheduled to be released this month or next for this phone. I would imagine that our devs will have custom ROMS fairly quickly afterward, if there's not a leak released before.
You might be better posting your question in the G2 forum. You'll probably find more people there with experience on both phones.

There are a lot of nice ROMS for safestrap users... I'm on MK2 ..currently running foxhound diamond dogs and eclipse. Both are pretty close to a aosp experience ( I also despise touchwiz)

I agree with charliepan69. I would safestrap flash a ROM before making the switch

I would keep my S4. LG sucks. The LG g2 looks nice but I'm sure there isn't much development for that device. Pretty soon I'm sure someone will figure out how to flash aosp roms. I remember running safestrap when I had the DROID RAZR and devs made aosp roms compatible with safestrap

I'm with you there... I had the RAZR too. I've thought about the g2 a few times as well and just couldn't do it. By the sounds of it kexec for SafeStrap may be close to coming out and that would change everything. There were a ton of aosp ROMs for the razr I'm sure the s4 will have even more. I couldn't wait myself that's why I just got rid of the mj7 s4.

Touchwiz does suck
Just throw a different launcher on it. I'm running Apex pro. It's quick... usually have between 700 and 800 megs free memory. Not exactly what I'd call a slow phone. I looked at getting the G2 when I got this S4. Very happy with the choice.

Another good point. I use Nova on any an all ROMs I use. I'd say apex an Nova would be the two to choose from in my opinion
Sent from my unknown using Tapatalk

Definitely safestrap it and stick with the S4 for now.....

S4 slow? You must've been using Nova, apex, or whatever launcher people use nowadays. My stock unrooted is screaming fast...

No way, there's a huge delay in touch response when tapping an icon. I guess I'm one of the only ones who can notice that. I even bought the prime version a while back and don't use it because I can't stand the lag.

I do not experience that with nova. Although I'll agree stock launcher is faster just because it was optimized for the phone, especially with animations off, but nova is plenty fast and worth having real control over the lajncher

Well I really think it depends on the ROM... and the settings etc. As well.
I'm running Liquid Smooth with Nova right now. and I have no delay at all with touch response and it was so fast I ended up slowing things down a little so I could enjoy the animations from xuimod as well.
Like I said it depends if u ask me.

You must have too much apps running, hold down on the home button for like 3 second and then let go. Close all of the apps you don't need by swiping them to the side. Then see how fast your s4 is. I had my s4 for at least 3 month now, still as fast as out the box (until i rooted and flashed it, now it's even faster with greenify).

Stock based Rom quality

I really am happy with the roms for our device up to date. Its not just the powerful hardware that gets me. I have plenty of other devices. Aosp, sense, touchwiz, blur. Out of all of the available roms. I'm really digging these LG roms. The launcher. Q-slide. Its all very functional for me. Oh and the calculator especially.
I think even though I'm dying to try Aosp on this phone like every one else. I think at the end of the day ill still be rockin an LG based rom. I was wondering if anyone else is thinking like me?

I personally would disagree with that. CM has way too many customizations to be anywhere near pure aosp. I'm not saying they aren't welcomed customizations but they are indeed customizations. I personally am not a huge fan of pure aosp because of the lack of customizations baked into the settings.

You really can't go wrong with CyanogenMod. :good:
I'd also recommend ChameleonOS by @Treken as it is sower solid and with personal conversations with trek he has shown to be very knowledgeable and under the same mindset that IMO all Linux/android Devs should be under. That is ask each other questions, share knowledge you gained by doing a task that caused troubles, and in general do not withhold info or ignore other Dev questions. :good:
And for another plug of an aosp ROM id also suggest SlimRom just because it is wicked light and plenty capable.
ChaOS and Slim are the only AOSP ROMs I've ran in over a month on the gs4. My nexus 7 just runs PACman.

Bought the G2 this morning... my thoughts

Coming from the galaxy nexus this phone is really nice. Super fast, nice screen, and overall a great feel. The factory interface isn't too bad, but I do still prefer vanilla android. I'm on T-Mobile and there is a lot of bloatware on here. Does anyone foresee this phone getting much attention from devs?

Just curious, what exactly makes you prefer vanilla Android over LG's UI on the G2?
I'll be joining the G2 community soon. Can tell you now... My plan is to root, stay on stock system and heavily debloat and tweak the system myself. Personally I'm tired of flashing roms and dealing with fixes, workaround and bugs. That's why I'm now on stock on my S2....And plan to keep it that way. After the tweaking and debloating it's smoother, better battery life and bugless.. Unlike just about any custom rom I've ever ran. I totally get the fun of flashing stuff and all that tho..... I'm just personally done with it. I just want a super stable device.

I just installed CleanROM XE 2.0 - more details in the AT&T dev thread. I've the AT&T LG G2, but it looks like it's set up to work on the T-Mobile variant too. Two days in and I think it's a keeper - performs really well and battery life seems just a bit better than stock. The way that the dev set up the install allows you to cherry pick the features that you want to keep from stock, as well as some of the stock software. It's a pretty slick install and I'm happy with this stock mod. Check out the details - the big draw for me is no Carrier IQ - and see if you like it.

wow totally shocked

So my g2 came in tonight from amazon att on contract for 29 bucks. I assumed I was going to have to root and rom it based on some reviews. My last phone was a nexus 4 with kit kat on it. I always run stock or close to stock android. But I have to tell you, once I put nova launcher and played with my settings..... I don't really see the benifit for me to change it. I didn't expect the phone to be nearly as nice as it is. I thought it would be a sideways move from my n4. But everything about the phone suprisingly great for me so far.
I do wish I could select other apps for the multi tasking window, but whatever.
I'll probably root eventually to get the at and t bloat off. But for now I feel like I got a lot more phone then I bargened for.

Nice to know, I currently have a N4 and I have been considering this phone. Based on the reviews I wondered if I should wait and see what other phones come out over the next 6 months but your post gives me optimism.
Phone is pretty sweet.
I like the toggles on the device. Battery life is soo good compared to the nexus 5/xperia z1 that i previously owned.
Ive been stuck trying to figure out how to get twrp installed. Even though i read the instructions haha they dont work for me sadly, i suck.
this phone is a beast.
I love this phone and everything that comes with it. I unlocked my bootloader, rooted it, put in a custom recovery and flashed a custom ROM . Then I realized it was better stock. All the custom ROM did was remove the cool stuff and made it look like all my other devices. They weren't nearly so cool when stock so they can stay custom but this baby I put back to stock. Mind you, I left it rooted and with a custom recovery so I can still tweak things but I don't lose all the goodness that this phone is.

I'm glad you like it. and it sounds like you want the same stuff I wanted out of this phone. Look around the forums and find things. For example I am running cleanrom just to get the crap off of it and its still like LG Stock except the crap and i am using Nova to look "Vanilla". Also I used Xposed Framework to change a few things around the way I like it. There is also a thread on here to use split view. its a port from the LG G Flex and works excellent. This is the link to set up Split view. Check out my screen shot to see some of the Xposed mods you can get to make it yours.
This dev forum got a lot more attention than I expected and its paying off bit time also just makes this phone that much more awesome.
I uploaded some pics of the Split-view along with some Qslide apps open too.

Since there are all these mods and debloating possibilities available there really is no need to use a custom ROM - not only on the G2, but on many other devices as well. It's just a bit more work; but hey, isn't that part of the modding / flashing fun?

I agree and it keeps the devices unique. I find that the phones become more generic. All the stuff is the same. You just might be able to change the color on one before the other catches up. Even from one device to the next, all the custom ROMs end up looking the same.
To be fair though, in a some cases
it is a definite benefit. I would never be running kitkat on my Note without a custom ROM. The battery improvements can be huge as well.
So I guess it's the device, benefits and good ole personal preferences. Regardless, isn't it wonderful to have the choice? And the hard work these people do to create these ROMs, for free, is amazing. Either way we're lucky.

mine is in the mail.... thanks for the different views on stock and modding....
So day 2 or 3 now. Took it to work today and battery lasted easily twice as long with very heavy use then my n4. I even ingressed and didn't need to charge it.
I'll hvae to look into the split screen mod, that would be pretty useful.
The ONLY irritating thing that I've not been able to simply fix is the volume for google now is the same volume adjustment for the keyboard. I like a nice quiet but audible keyboard and a loud voice with google now, I'm sure I'll figure out a way, but its not readily obviouious how.
I thought I'd end up rooting it the first day because I had the latest and gratest kit kat on the n4, but I've got no desire to do it. I'm sure I'll get board and do something different eventually. Just cant leave well enough alone.
I just picked up my n4 to copy the ringtones over to the g2, and what did I do? tried to turn it on looking for a button on the back. Already trained!
Seriously I think this is the sleeper phone of the year. I snickerd at my friends n5 today. I told him it was cute and it was a poser's development phone. I was only half way joking.

I have tried out baja rom, hyper drive, eclipse rom.. My fave rom is eclipse by far, best battery life and aosp styling is nice. The other roms are good and i'm looking forward to trying out rom updates on the new safestrap slots.
not generally a fan of these threads since i appreciate all the devs and the different stuff they create but since the rom isnt mentioned here and has been the most updated rom i have ever used on a locked bootloader device then i have to make sure that @hsbadr with his Jasmine rom gets listed.
he is also about to launch a FULL S5 port with the Note 3 specific features injected.
thanks to all the devs listed and not
I originally opened this thread to see what users had to say about a ROM. I put my opinion and read many others. Since the first thread was posted I have tried other ROMs that were mentioned here. Purpose was a success. THANKS Again to all the hard working developers that make these forums worthy and make our phones outstanding!!! As I have said before in other posts, keep up the GREAT work and can't wait to see what's on the horizon
