[MOD] GPS improvement - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

So I was wondering why the GPS take about 10 seconds to lock on to area sat's, and found that there is no region set for our Ultra. This is usually the case with international devices.. So this mod will enable you GPS hardware to skip the location lock which takes about 5 seconds, and then will find your region stat's.
Since applying this, I've noticed my GPS lock has cut down to a few seconds, where it used to take up to 10 seconds... sometimes even 20 seconds in my car.
Prerequisite:
You must know where you live!
Notes:
You may not see a faster result at first try. Your device may have to redownload the gps data. Ensure you have a data connection.
Instructions:
0 - Download and extract the zip folder (onto your Ultra)
1 - Find out which region you live in... then copy the region folder (Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania, South America)
2 - ... and paste the folder into the following directory: system/etc/
3 - Give the folder the following permissions:

yeah let me know if it works for Asia.
I just copied the satellite data off line, and pasted it into these folders for Android... so it should be fine. :fingers-crossed:

Mine had Asia. Possibly why it was taking so long.

What I meant was I downloaded more or less the same mod the other day, just had not got around to applying it.

ah right. I thought of implement it into my ROM, but its region specific.. There's always something else to add... Found a 4 way reboot mod.. but it involves a lot of coding which I'm not really up on the play with.

This app does same thing but allows you to choose you location first - good for including onto roms https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.fastergps

Yes, I know what the last line says.
Thank you for the heads up, I have a C6806, and my GPS lock is rapid without this app,
However, I travel to the UK to visit family on occasion and the last time I did so, I failed to get a lock with my NA Samsung Galaxy Note (SGH-i717), so this app should be useful the next time that I'm over there by letting me switch my GPS region set to one more compatible with that location.

Simple DPI fix for Google Play Store Issue

I searched alot for this fix but really only found moded Play Store apps. It turns out the fix is a lot more simple than that. No modded apps required (this worked for me and hopefully for you.
When you change the DPI, you get Google Store "incompatible apps" problem. The fix is this. First, I went to the app and deleted the cache. Then I uninstalled the google play store app. Reboot the phone, made sure the dpi setting of my phone was where I wanted it to be, in my situation, 260, then relaunched the google play store or market (whatever its called after you uninstall it). It reinstalled and presto....all my apps came back. I think it does a call out to the system to see what dpi your phone is running at and stores that somewhere...then serves you up what is compatible with your phone based on the first time query settings. Anyway, this worked for me and hopefully for you.
And I am running ICS 4.0.4 running the OnlyOne Rom version 4. I am not sure it will work on other versions of android but am pretty sure you have nothing to lose by trying it.
Please tell me if it works for you.
thanks

This only works when the play store your using is modded for dpi changes, other wise it will come back after awhile. This is a known fact why the make the modded markets. But maybe I'm wrong, doubt it tho!

No topless beaches around here that I know of...damn!

I dont have a link to a modded play store....being an engineer, I try to pick the simple solutions first and if they dont work, I move off to the more complicated solutions..although replacing the store app is not that complicated. In either event, I would/will if this does not work or stops working...but so far so good....
The bigger question is Why does it work for a period of time, and then stop as some of you have stated. What files are being accessed and/or changed, etc.
Just a thought

It will change when the market does a check on your phone. The modded markets stop the check and the upgrade that the market does after it realizes what dpi your running. no telling when it will check, I figured once you app needed an upgrade it would check but maybe its on a scheduled timeframe.

TomTom

So I read today that TomTom is finally available for "some Android devices". Bizzarrely (and somewhat predictably), it's not available for the highest-profile Android phone on the market (the S3). Why is it that this often seems to happen with new apps - i.e. the S3 (and previously S2) are rarely amongst the first devices to be supported? Are the underlying reasons usually technical, marketing-related, ...??
It might not be the answer you want, but TomTom is quite over-rated.
The google Maps + Navigation combo has become a very mature product and beats every single similar app I have tested.
Except for the curiosity factor, TomTom offers nothing over what we already have.
It's the lack of off-line routing (and re-routing) that detracts from Google Maps/Nav - especially when you're paying very expensive data roaming charges....
I don't see any TomTom app on market. Can you elaborate

I always though TOMTOM was the best, in the UK anyway. Google navigation is fine, but it is a real pain when you have no reception (driving round in a forest for 30 minutes). I thought I would buy it on another device and see what happens when I copy it over using Titanium backup. Trouble is I don't seem to have any compatible devices.
Maybe you should try Sygic: GPS Navigation
It supports offline maps too, and works best for me in my country,
And some excerpts from news online
"For its part, TomTom hasn't said why its application doesn't support devices with higher resolutions, but it did reassure users that it's "committed to supporting higher resolutions on an ongoing basis." It's not clear when that will happen, though."
Yeah Sygic is pretty dang good. It even used TomTom maps and traffic data.

Update question

Not used my 920 for a while & was wondering if you are still restricted to doing updates only over Wi-Fi?
Sorry for the double post but the reason I asked this is I dragged out my 920 the other day & checked for updates. It found one straightaway which it then downloaded & installed over the mobile network. Yet when I checked again on the off chance it found another update but insisted this one must be downloaded over wifi.
So why can download one on the mobile network & the other one over wifi?

It depends on the size of the update. I don't recall the limit but if the file is over a certain size the phone will give you a warning that it must be done over wifi. If it is small then it will do it over cellular.

They updated to the recent version about 5 months ago. Also note if you install language packs for voice support and such that counts as an update and it will go through the update process and even run the gears for a while when the pack installs.

When you first launch the app (v1.9.0) it gives you the following onscreen instructions;
Fling sideways to switch faces
Fling up and down to switch themes
Double tap to open options
In settings at the very bottom under "Premium options" is;
Switch face every 15secs
Lockscreen face
Have you patched you TS yet? If not, you may want to do that.

Sorry for going of topic but...
You said "many different Omate" - I really hope MotherBoard is same on all and we could use same kernels.
It would be terrible if we have five or six different devices - I really doubt there will be development for all of them.
You, as a developer, could maintain two, maybe three devices simultaneously..

There's already four different boards that I know of. I only have access to one, soon to be two. That's part of the reason the ROM it taking so long to get out. The ROM base is the same but it's requiring at least two different kernels so far and the 1/8 EU 2100 has yet to come out yet.
Why so many different boards. With the exception of the 1900 and 2100 isnt the rest of the ts the same?

Got mine activated yesterday at the T-mobile Store, but I'm having a problem with call forwarding. When I set it up it give me a network error message.

I had the same issue with mine. It seems to connect better if I have the phone unlocked with the screen on then press the connect button on the Gear S (not a physical button, just on the screen). I'm using AT&T so you may be having a different issue.

it fixed itself with a restart. Now it's good. But I heard you have to change the ringer count before voicemail or it takes forever to forward the calls.

this is :good: yeah someone said it takes about 20/30 seconds or so if you don't change it
Added a top 5 hidden features video.
Added an in-depth video that covers everything you can and can't do when pairing a Gear S to non-Samsung smartphones.

Mine does pretty good on battery life. Two days if I use it bluetooth connected to my phone and don't try to use any mobile networks. One day if I use the watch as a standalone phone without my Note 4 nearby. Although I have noticed that I sometimes get less than a day if I have horrendous service (literally one bar or no service all day). I also get one full day if I set the watch face to stay on permanently so I don't have to raise my arm to see the time. As far a lag, I haven't noticed any. Responds just as quick as I expect it to :good:
