Yay someone commented!
Anything in particular? Obviously got the Unboxing and benchmarks, hoping to get the Sony magnetic dock and I have a S Case for it

mmmmm not sure, I used to have a Note 1 channel showing things others werent showing at the time like PS3 connectivity to run emulators, etc.
Maybe small videos showing people how easy it is to use the PS3 controller with it, some of the small apps that maybe people is not familar with to show what the phone can do before being big!
Car holder, etc.
Maybe others will give more ideas but surely testing new ROMS will give you a nice following for people that prefer to wait before flashing new stuff
Oh a maybe some detailed flashing guide. .....hey you ask for more

I'd love it if you can take a look at the rooting 290 with a locked bootloader thread and make a video detailing the process from recovery up until it is fully functioning - so all the flashing, wiping, etc.
Thanks so much.

I'm talking about the method for a locked bootloader.
Upgrading to a pre rooted .290 Rom whilst maintaining a locked bootloader

I successfully unrooted 532 by simply going into SuperSU and choosing to uninstall through there.
Not sure if the same applies to .290 - but I can't imagine why it wouldn't?

I think that's pretty straightforward - unless you get bored and want an additional video to add to the collection. lol.
I've been following the methods posted in the Locked BL rooted 290 thread - just not familiar with flashing to the extent I'd like which is why I was hoping for a video that goes through the process step-by-step from rooting .532, to installing recovery, to all the flashing and ultimately to having a fully working pre-rooted .290 ROM without any boot loops or booting issues.
You could technically start from the downgrading from .290 part if you wanted to make it a complete overview - but I think most people are able to downgrade from .290 to .532 without a problem - the complications arise when trying to go back to a rooted .290

I dont see why sony make it so hard. I had a galaxy S3 beforehand, a nexus 4 and even my older LG 2X just plugged into a computer, USB debugging and a piece of software and that was it

[Q] Should I reallly unlock this bootloader? (Sony Live Walkman)

Please, forgive if this post does not go here, sorry!!!
I have a Sony Live Walkman that I bought without any phone company in between. (Sorry my English doesn't help, don't know the exact term for that).
I checked, and it says that it is allowed to unlock bootloader.
But my question is, what is the benefit in my case? I don't have any garbage from any company loaded on my phone, the loader image is from Sony.
I can't grasp really well why is there the need to unlock bootloader. I'm new to Sony, I just had a LG - and the only concern was to ROOT and nothing else.
My Sony is rooted already. Do I need to unlock bootloader? (I'm just repeating myself a lot, lol) - and let's supossed I do unlock it: what happens? what new things I can/cannot do/break/etc?
Thanks a lot in advance for any info you could provide me, I learnt a lot in these last months, and with this Sony things are.... different....
Kisses
Unlocking bootloader lets you install custom kernels and ROMs. If you do it via official way, you lose your guarantee and your DRM keys, that means you will not be able to use TrackID and some other little features. If you patch it via unofficial way (test point method) you lose nothing. Anyway, if you don't intend to change your ROM, don't unlock it
Sorry that I'm a bit slow , but what is the "unofficial way" to do it?
I don't plan to install any custom ROM, but would like to try some new Kernel - and I believe I have to unlock bootloader for that?
I managed to root without unlock it, I wish I could flash a new kernel the same way
Unfortunately, you can't flash custom kernels without unlocking the bootloader. Check THIS thread, you'll find useful information
Well the unofficial way will allow you to keep your drm information and you will be able to keep using the track id app. here is a video of the method you need to follow to unlock it the unofficial way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgYAZoqsk9E, the video it's from fast gsm but it is the basic procedure of the test point method the only difference it's the software you will use and of course that it is free.
Thanks guys, very useful info. Just one last thing, cause one of your responses confused me:
The official method will let me flash Kernel
the UN official method won't
is that right?
Thanks again, promise I'll read all those articles now.
any method will let you flash a custom kernel the only difference is that using the official method you will lose your drm (digital rights management) for protected music, the usage of the track id app and any way of officially update your phone (over the air, ppc or sus) and using the unofficial way (test point method) you will keep the drm, track id and you will be able to update your phone using ppc or sus.

Perfectly welcome!
Well, I been finally reading about this unlocking booloader stuff.
The so called " via unofficial way (test point method)" looks very complicated, like I could really break something. I mean, wires? Needles?
I think I will go for the official way., even if i don't like the idea.
Did official method also.
It is much more simple, just on the computer.
You will loose the track id feature, never used it anyway.

Oh well, I may be a bit slow - but couldn't do it. Any method.
The test one, I tried, but could understand the dynamics with the program, and got lost.
Te official one, couldn't follow the instruccione given on the Sony site. All those commands (fastload.exe bla bla bla) didn't work, and the Pc never asked for any driver.
I only hope someone could upload a guide step by step, that would be wonderful.

[Q] Xperia Ray not working properly after flashing and rooting. What to do?

Hello everyone.
I tried rooting my Xperia ray today using this guide: http://mytechencounters.wordpress.com/2012/03/17/root-your-xperia-phone-without-voiding-warranty/
Bear with me, you might find all of this tedious to read. My phone came with GB 2.3.4 build .62 which is hard to root. So as the above guide directed, I downloaded a .42 build firmware, CE(Central Europe perhaps? I don't know) and tried to flash it using flashtool. I disconnected the phone from the PC in between. My phone wouldn't boot. Then I used SUS and updated it to ICS, making the phone work. I then flashed it to GB .42 patiently, and with success. Alas, problems started immediately. Many processes such as media, calender storage, acro etc came up as stopped working. Even after selecting force close they would keep appearing. I cleared the respective cache/data and the notifications stopped. Then I rooted it using Doomlord's toolkit, and updated to .62 via OTA, keeping my root. A few things have changed. The keyboard name is the same, International keyboard, but it is different and I don't like it. Camera is not working. Screen goes blank if I open the camera. Messaging does not work and the messaging app crashes as soon as I open it. No contacts are found, despite importing them again. (They all show up when using the import from SIM option, it says importing is done but they are nowhere to be found). I called someone manually. While calling his name shows up but my contacts is completely blank. Google search is not working and it crashes too. There might be other problems, but I haven't checked. Anything in particular to check? Please help me solve all these issues. I'm glad my phone is rooted now, but it's next to useless due to all this. Please help me.
Great. Even the screen unlock security seems to not work. No slide to unlock. No pattern unlock even though I saved a pattern. I press the power button, the phone just shows the home. No security. How do I fix all this? PC Companion? SUS? And I don't want ICS so I won't use them if that's what they're going to update my phone to rather than fix it.
Do a complete wipe data/factory reset or flash .42 again, if this won't work take it to a service center cause it's a hardware issue

Oh my God. Yet again, a small step proved to be highly useful. I can't thank you enough! :good::good::good::good::good::good:
Side note: I'm thinking about unlocking my bootloader, mainly for installing a custom kernel to overclock and probably for using custom ROMs in the future. I know that I will lose my DRM, so I can't run trackid and timescape. What else wont I be able to run? Is DRM that important? Can I unlock the bootloader with a method that will keep my warranty? Thanks in advance.

No problem, hope it's going well now :good:
1. Overclocking can destroy your phone/phone's hardware. I've never overclocked and I wouldn't do it...
2. DRM are not important and trackid should work with the latest version. Not sure about timescape, maybe with an updated version it works
3. You can just keep your warranty by unlocking with testpoint method. Here is a great tutorial and sony won't notice it, only when your phone is bricked up
But testpoint is just working until a specific build number of the hardware, it should be mentioned somewhere in the thread!

Android 4.2.1? Oh just saw your sig you have CM 10.1. I've heard that Android 4.0 and above versions don't work well on 2011 Xperia devices.
How's it running? Is it better than the stock GB ROM? How's the gaming performance? If that's fine, I might install the ROM in the near future. Also, do you use Chainfire 3D? V6 Supercharger? Any other apps that enhance performance? Sorry for asking so many questions

I think you have gotten a lot of good advice from Mihahn and I just wanted to add some suggestions before you unlock your bootloader...you probably want to get comfortable working with CWM Recovery. It has been a while since I did this on GB but there are a bunch of tools that you can use to put recovery onto GB stock roms and a good place to start is this thread in Ray Dev: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426912
Also before you decide you just gotta have a certain ROM, take a good look at the OP for the ROM....there may be something not working correctly that would be a deal breaker for you....there are some features that only work properly on a stock based ROM. This is particularly true of the Jelly Bean 4.2 build for the Ray....the 4.1 ROMs are working pretty good.....but if you absolutely love the sony camera app then you have to stay on a stock ROM.
Have fun!

[Q] Got some questions about Root and Jelly Bean

Hi!
Before the OTA jelly bean upgrade i had rooted my tablet using DebugfsRoot primarily for the reason that i wanted to use my PS3 controller with the tab.
Everything went good and i had a blast, then the OTA upgrade came. I was really stocked to try out jelly bean so i decided to take the upgrade even though i knew it would break my root (i was thinking there will probably be another way to root again in a few weeks).
I later cleared the tablets memory and it's SD-card to get a smoother experience on JB.
So here i am, jelly bean and not rooted. I've begun researching how to get my root back and from what I've gathered i need to:
unlock the bootloader,
downgrade to ISC,
root,
save the root,
upgrade to jelly bean,
recover the root.
That's a lot of steps for someone who has only rooted using the automated tool, and to be honest it scared me a little.
I just wanted to know if there is any other (preferably easier) way and if i can lock the bootloader after I've unlocked it (since the warranty goes away).
If there isn't any easier way, does anyone of you know a step-by-step guide i can follow?
Thanks,
Tallkotten

You cannot downgrade to ICS unless you did nvflash while on ICS which you haven't.
Your process would be, unlock bootloader, install TWRP recovery, flash custom jellybean rom with root built in.

Thanks, but then i wont be able to have the vanilla android experience. Or is it any ROM that's basically the same as normal android but root in it?
Why is it that i cant just unlock bootloader and then root? Do i really need to swap roms?

Well u can unlock, flash twrp and then just flash a root zip in TWRP but that is no less steps than flashing the rom and you have none of the speed improvements. The reason most people unlock is to install the custom rom because it is far faster than stock but if that's what you want to do so be it

It's just that if i flash a ROM then i (since i like to be thorough) have to research and spend lots of time checking which ROM is best for me
We'll see what i end up doing.
Do you know how the warranty is affected by unlocking? And can it be restored to it's original state after an unlock?

There is no research to do. You say you want it like stock, that only leaves hairybean 1.51 for you.
Once you are unlocked you cannot relock and your warranty is void.

I'm in almost the exact same position you're in. Had root on ICS, lost it on the change to JB. I have several months left on my warranty so am uneasy unlocking and voiding my safety net. Having said that my Prime has zero problems and works as expected, but still I'm reluctant.
I've read through every page on HairyBean and Energy threads and am busting to experience them...especially Energy as it seems to get updated with stunning regularity. But I also believe Asus 4.2 update is coming soon and think it will further enhance the stock OS. Fark, dunno man.....lol I'll do it if you will

Some observations. I am not sure what the actual percentage is but from what I have seen most of the people who have sent their prime in for warranty work have gotten back a prime that can not be unlocked. I am pretty sure that if I got green camera or something of that nature I would just live with it or repair it myself. If and when ASUS releases a 4.2 update it will be an improvement to the stock os that will still not bring stock os on locked prime to a fraction of the speed and productivity available on an unlocked prime using a custom rom. Further anything asus releases will be available within the week with improvements by devs for unlocked primes. The warranty on the prime is for people who have the explicit goal to keep the tablet mediocre at best.

Haha. Just got my Nexus 4 a few days ago and i can tell you that 4.2 is awesome. I really miss it when i'm using my prime.
The only reason i'd like root is to have more freedom with my PS3 controller... Why did they have to go and make is so hard to root? :/
Will there ever be a way to root JB without unlock the Prime or is that technically impossible?

First it depends on your desire. And how to receive root read the guide, the first post in this subject.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2569904
Why do you want/need root?
If you can answer that question; go for it.
I totally understand the need for root fot a lot of users.......that being said this is the first and only phone ive had in 5 years that I have not felt the need to root/unlock bootloader................................. YET!

We can't offer advice. If you need access to the root directory for any reason then you will need to...
If not then obviously leave it as is.
All i can really say is; If you have to ask, you don't need it.

Yep, because if one needs root, the question is... "What's the most recent / best method?"
My advise, don't worry about root until you need root access. I was doing fine without it until Sony decided to screw up sound enhancements on its latest software update. If you aren't on .136, my advice wait till kit Kat to make a decision on updating/rooting!:good:
Just to chime in here, I have a desire for root, but I'm still stock/no-root.
I know folks might disagree with me, but after reading pages and pages of howto's, etc. I've determined there is no way to backup your stock phone (TA partition/DRM keys) etc with any of the current methods.
To root you must unlock your boot loader, when you unlock your bootloader, your TA partition and DRM keys are gone.
This means you have voided your warranty and can never restore to a truly stock phone.
Yeah Yeah Yeah, I know you can revert all the way back to version 532, root the phone and then backup your TA, etc. This is a WHOLE lot of steps that if you aren't careful can leave you with a $700 brick. If your nervous at all about these multi-step processes, than just leave your phone alone.
As many have said, I really haven't even thought about a custom ROM for this phone. The ONLY thing I miss is being able to do a nandroid backup, as it's such a pain to rebuild my phone if something goes wonky.

I, and many of the other power users/posters (hamdogg, LordManhatton, [NUT], krabappel, DoomLord), have gone back and forth many times and have tested all of the steps. There were lots of Z1 (and a few ZU) bricks, mostly by flashing .290 without bootboundle.
The steps are simple, and you dont even need to unlock the BL to have root on .290/136
Flash [NUT]'s .532
Root w1th Bin4ry's tool
Backup TA
Unlock BL
Upgrade to latest FTF (or if on locked BL follow the steps for .290 and then .136)

My reasoning:
to root because:
1. I can mod the system app as i like too (camera, quick toggle, xposed, etc)
2. I can do easier and real backup with Titanium Backup
3. I can find alternative ROM when the stock ROM is not there anymore
not to root because:
1. It has unremovable battery, so i don't want to have it died faster with all that plug/unplug ordeal
2. i got all the service that was offered at the time of purchase, i just want to enjoy it as long as i can
3. The stock ROM is enough for me
4. Helium/Carbon Backup is there to substitute TiBu
So each of the way is good in for some reason. For me the the urge to mod is dead if you are not rooted (obvious) but there are a lot of other ways to do a modding, for instance, do your own program might be a better approach to fill on your own needs. There are more than one ways to Rome anyway

Good one!!
rooting the latest is a pain. But i didnt start using my phone, till i had safely rooted it.
This is the only phone i havent rooted yet sincee the eclair era...no need.already powerful.smooth fast clear.nothing left to tweak n screw for me.best one yet.

i dont root till Sony didnt released the last Firmware. If that gives me the Power to move Apps to SD the phone stays unrooted. If not i go for root, because of the size of my apps and because of the option Titanium Backup gives me
This is the only Android phone I have kept the stock ROM. I rooted it a couple of times but kept going back to the stable stock rom. The phone is naturally fast and smooth and has good memory and battery management as standard.
Need something else? then root.

I think the main reason to root these days is to use Xposed. Sony stock roms+Xposed make a wonderful combination of features and stability.
Just to give an example, with Xposed you can have the features of (what used to be) Paranoid Android on a Sony stock rom.
This said, it is true that rooting .290/.136 firmwares may be a pain in the ass, but anyone that follows instructions carefully should be able to do it safely.

Wimp I am when it comes to my primary work device I have lots of other older devices that I've hacked the crap out of (I can't count how many ROM's I've put on my GT7.7) and my Dell Streak wasn't even useful until I put a custom ROM it.
None of what you described above is something that I haven't done with other devices (But never with my current everyday primary device). That being said, My original statement still stands - there is no SIMPLE way to ROOT your phone and keep/backup the original config/partitions. My last 3 devices, I downloaded an App, clicked the button and whammo, Root.
Until I absolutely need it, I'll just stick with Stock/No-Root (That is of course unless someone creates a Whammo solution).
Thank you all for your response.
I have decidedto stick to the stock ROM for time being.
Once again I truly appreciate your response

Is it *really* worth me rooting?

I love my shiney new Xperia Z2 - but I also miss my beloved Nexus 5 and Pure Android.
What features/abilities will I lose Rooting/Roming my Xperia? I remember on the Original Z that it screwed all the DRM stuff and you lost your fancy camera and other abilities.
I am used to using TWRP recovery and flashing at will without having to worry about ADB/Fastboot crap - is that Also still an issue with Xperias?
All opinions welcomed, flames and trolls - not so much
Thanks
I guess , I mean by rooting you should know your warranty is voided but I never heard of losing abilities to use certain apps or processes in fact it gives you access to more apps that require root for example some roms include very cool features that only the Z3 has them which you can never get on your Z2 unless you use custom roms ...
in short , if you know what you are doing while rooting and 100% sure you know what you are doing isnt going to harm your device adding to that that you are a root loving guy who likes customizing his phone then yes sure go ahead in fact its so cool to root! But !
If any of the above is answered negatively by you then dont root
PS : there are some root methods that are so simple that dont require any advanced knowledge you just follow easy step by step 8 minutes video on how to root . You can check in google (How to root xperia z2) and you will get it done easily
simple as that
hope I helped you

I'm no noob to rooting/flashing phones, been at it for years - I'm just worried about Xperia-specific things like is it worth losing my DRM keys?

Hmm I gave you a bum steer. The link I quoted is relevant if you unlock your bootloader, not required for root. Rooting is easy there are heaps of guides. I'm sure you're aware, rooting will allow you to theme, customise and flash stock based roms, but you won't be able to flash cm or aosp or anything non-sony.

Have you got a link for this? Even unlocking your bootloader, the Sony website says you may void your warranty. Not will, MAY. Anyway, root, backup ta partition. Anything goes wrong, restore ta partition and relock bootloader.
Just don't do stupid stuff like over volt your CPU or increase the CPU heat tolerance out anything like that.

rooting is generaly safe
there are mods for xperias and there are mods for all devices, its often safest to install these ones
also root gives you controll, i dont think rooting voids your warranty but i have yet to re-read the new warrenty info
drm keys are only lost when unlocking your bootloader
and rooting is easily undoable so have a mess around with root apps or root access, root is somewhat more freedom and make sure when you do install something , its for locked bootloaders, xperias or all devices 4.0 and above

Warranty information from the Sony website. I'm not sure if it is a UK only thing as this is from the UK website. I would assume that it would be worldwide to prevent confusion.

Yea I see what your saying but I sort of disagree. It states failures resulting from software changes, doesn't this mean if the failure is not from the software modification it is covered? Void means gone and I don't think that's the case.
E.g. You remove the heat threshold from the CPU and fry it = not covered.
Your microphone dies by its self = is covered.

It could do, but as Sony are unable to ascertain what changes have been made / then unmade they could argue your mic failure was due to you fiddling with the gain. Hence the uncertainty, bear in mind with rooting simply flashing a stock tft removes evidence of tampering, whilst Sony know who has asked for an unlock code for their bootloader theoretically allowing them to decline warranty service even if you restore DRM keys and relock.
Rooting doesnt void your warranty as long as bootloader remains locked.....
There is a rootkit that properly root your z2 in less than a minute withouth unlocking the bootloader..and you can unroot anytime you decide to.
DRM keys are lost only after unlocking bootloader.
So lets root why a not? Root gives you control over everything, and if you mess up something you have backup in twrp so..
Thanks for all the replies and input guys
Think i'm just gonna leave it stock as long as tolerable and see if I can wait out Official lollipop builds before I do anything.
Learned the hardway last night not to delete the DCIM folder off the internal storage. Camera stopped working without a SD so had to factory reset lol.

Because rooting compromises the security of your device, if the OP doesn't feel the need to root I'd say don't.
But what functionality is lost when the bootloader is unlocked (camera? audio? ), also, is it all gained back when drm is put back and relocked? ( if saved when rooted at beginning ofcourse )
Also, if my z2 says bootloader unlockable: NO.
Can I use the unofficial, easier, faster method to unlock it??

If you miss Nexus just go back to nexus
you can compare no phone with nexus in term of modification and ...
when you unlock bootloader and get root access on official firmware you won't lose any of official (Xperia) apps
But of course no xperia apps on custom rom unless find port of these apps
:good:

Very true about the Nexus - i'm am starting to miss it, bless its flashed like crazy heart
I'm not too worried about losing Xperia apps (I hate the album app, gimmie back the aosp gallery!) I was more concerned about Camera & display quality software stuff.
