Sound Effects (EQ, Clear Audio) only works with Walkman in 136?! - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

So upgraded to .136 and now the Sound Effects wont do anything under settings.
It only works when access via Walkman and only for walkman.
I was able to use it for any app before in 290 and from the Settings menu.
Anyone else having the same issue? :/

Yes I'm experiencing same here... I wasn't aware that it worked with walkman. I hope this wasn't done intentionally, as our phone wasn't very loud to begin with!
I also noticed that if I receive a call or check my voicemail while Sirius XM is active in the background, once the call is ended the eq is one again enabled. This leaves hope for a correction update.

It is even worst now! I just noticed that even with Walkman it will work with MP3s but no longer with FLAC files.
I am about to research how to go back to .290 :/

weird it works for me with power amp and other players. I can change the sound enhancement setting and listen to change in the effects

error.....

Did you upgrade from 290 without resetting the previous data?
Does it apply to flac files and are you using the one from the NUT thread?

i upgraded from 290 and flashed the new german tft then rooted using jackie099 way, first think I test, is the sony sound enhancements, and I test always sound effects first thing as I am very critical to test sound effects and works on every player from power amp to jet player , then I installed viber and it works on the whole system too, for every player.
so no complains in the sound section for me, also bluetooth streaming works great no complains.
yes works on flac, and all other formats

darn it I suck quoting lol

Glad to know is not a 136 issue even though I am not the only one. I will have to try again. Do you have a 6802?

yep 6802

I have the same issue with Spotify. Though I'm not sure it worked before either because I never got around to testing it. Recently bought the phone and already gone through 4 updates.

I guess all I need to do with NUT's steps is to format system, data partition maybe even internal SD then just Step 5 and 6 from his guide?
Files:
For C6833: Download C6833_14.2.A.1.136.flashable.zip (Bittorrent: 826MB) and C6833_14.2.A.1.136_Stripped.ftf (21MB)
Save them somewhere you remember;
Put 'C68XX_14.2.A.1.136.flashable.zip' on (the external) SDcard1;
Put 'C68XX_14.2.A.1.136_Stripped.ftf' inside the Flashtool/firmwares folder;
Create a backup of your phone in TWRP and don't forget to backup the contents of 'SDCard' (the internal storage!);
#5 Flash 'C68XX_14.2.A.1.136.flashable.zip' in TWRP;
NOTE: do not reboot but go back to the main menu, then go to reboot->power off;
#6 Flash everything in 'C68XX_14.2.A.1.136_Stripped.ftf' using flashtool;
Reboot to system.

ahahahah sorry about that, hope you get it soon...I can almost picture you waiting for it...

I just deleted Data partition, Format system, dalvik etc (not format internal), flashed again and while the MusicFx seems to work more consistently now from the Settings menu not just from Walkman settings, it still does not apply to any other app and it still does not affect FLAC files, only my MP3s. This is getting me pissed off...may just end up converting all FLAC to mp3 if I cant find a fix and call it a day.
I will wait for the 6802 version..maybe that will do it.

I think the phone sounds best flat without any EQ settings applied or ClearAudio+ etc.
Specially since I bought a small headphone amplifier today and connected between the phone and headphones. When pumping up the sound high enough with it (and trust me it gets high, way higher than without), the EQ settings does not make any difference to the sound anymore what so ever. Only on lower volumes. Good cheap investment I made.

I guess it all depends on what kind of music you listen to though and what you prefer in the sound.

Too many factors come into play. Headphones, type of music. amp, EARS and preferences. So that is why I no longer ask for headphones recommendations and the likes after going through a big testing phase
After getting into new headphones and amp, now I am getting curious about external dacs...it never ends! lol

My sound settings work perfectly fine using Power Amp on .136

UPDATE!
I got sound enhancement working with 136 for FLAC and any other app. As I recalled I had other issues before when running non 6802 ROMS on my phone, I was still holding on to some hope that a 6802 based 136 ROM would be the one that will work...and IT DID!
I just flashed the 136 from the NUT thread and it is all working great.
PS After finishing TIBU and all updates, I lost again the FLAC and other apps using Sound Enhancements. I tested it before right after flashing to make sure it was working but no idea how something I restored could affect this since I never restore system apps and besides, I restored even less apps this time that I did on 290 so I guess we are back to blaming a glitchy 136. In any case, I am going to just use MP3 VBR at highest rate since in reality, you cant tell the difference with a phone and external amp...
I am almost tempted to flash again just to determine if it was something I restored or what made it not work again.
PS 2. Flashed again and tested flac again and it works. Hopefully I will find out what exactly is making it stop when I restored apps.

Bluetooth headset for Diamond 2

I am looking for bluetooth headset for diamond 2 mainly for listening to music.
Any recommendation for this?
Samsung SBH-650 and Sony DS-205 are both under my consideration. Is the capatibility and sound quality good?
Thanks so much!
Hi,
I spent a long time searching for a decent pair of bluetooth headphones and I finally settled on the Sony DR-BT50. They're fairly comfortable, they have much better bass than most bluetooth headsets and the autonomy is unbeatable... I think that they're a good choice if you don't mind the size.
You'll want to use Advanced Config Tools to change the bitpool and sample rate settings on your phone but once you've done that you'll get quite a nice sound for wireless headphones.

I use the DS205 and I like it. I'm impressed by the audio quality - both from the phone and the headset. Used it in two meetings today and talk time of 5h wasn't a problem for that headset.

These are my bluetooth settings for Advanced Config Tools :
Bitpool: Very high
Maximum bitpool: 128 (but I read somewhere that 80 is best)
Minimum bitpool : 65
Sample rate: 48000 Hz
I don't really know if those are the best settings but it sounds much better compared to default settings with my headphones.
I use the Sony HBH-DS200. It seems to be very similar to the DS205 except cheaper, possibly because it's an older model. I agree with mrbister, the audio quality is superb, I prefer it to the quality straight from the TD2 itself, and I'm fussy about audio quality.
The only niggle with the DS-200 (and probably the 205 too): the volume control is not user friendly. You have one button which you keep pressed and the volume ramps all the way down and up again. if you just want to raise it slightly this is a pain. You're better off adjusting it on the TD2.
You do need to set the TD2's bluetooth settings very high (Bitpool: very high, max 90, min 80). The TD2 heats up quite a bit when streaming (possibly because of these settings) and the battery goes down quickly, but the link is very reliable, and you can still do other things like surf at the same time. I also stream internet radio via bluetooth, but that really does heat the phone and shorten battery life. Still works fine though.
I can't praise the Sony 200 enough, i'm getting another as a spare.
Thanks so much mrbister, NeoGreendawg and Pete_S.
I think I will go to buy DS205 because of the superb sound quality!
I think the ds205 has another kind of volume button compared to ds200:

The bluetooth headset is a different thing from the bluetooth handsfree? I have a Tech handsfree (shown in the attached image), and it can be used just for the phone conversation, NOT the music.
Hence, I would like to know whether I do something wrong, or I have to use a different device for hearing music.
Is there any audio lag/sync issues when watching videos? I'd read that this is a common issue with bluetooth receivers.
EDIT: To the OP, if you don't mind pricy canalphones, consider the ety8: http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=993
@ jcan: Your bluetooth handsfree needs to support "A2DP" profile as well as "headset" profile, then you will get both stereo audio and handsfree functionality. If it's only "headset", you won't get high quality stereo.
@ Aisorik: I haven't tested video with bluetooth, but as well as the possible lag/sync issue, you might find the TD2 "runs out of steam" trying to play video and, if you've tweaked the settings, high quality bluetooth at the same time.
@ mrbister: Thanks. Looks like I should have got the 205 instead!
Thx for the answer, Pete_S!
Hi,
I tried a video with my BT headphones and the sound came through nicely as usual (no connection drops or background noise) but it was a fraction of a second late so, yes, it's slightly out of sync...
I haven't looked into it much yet but I seem to remember reading about a way to fix this with an option in Core player...

Was the video a tricky one (near to the capabilities of the TD2), and have you also pushed up your bluetooth quality settings? Guess I ought to try it myself as I have Coreplayer too.

Yeah, my bluetooth settings have been tweaked (see previous page) but I don't think that's the cause... Like I said, I read somewhere that you can delay the video so it matches the sound but I still haven't looked for the settings myself... I rarely watch videos on my TD2 and never with my BT headset so it's not really an issue for me.

Sorry, I forgot to check back
The delay in the audio is probably down to a buffer used for A2DP streaming. I don't know whether the quality settings would make this any worse or not.
The reason for the question was only to find out whether the TD2 has the processing power to do high quality streaming whilst decoding a demanding video at the same time.
But, like you, I rarely watch videos on it, so it isn't much of an issue, just curiosity

I don't think the bluetooth audio works for FM radio. That is what you meant, isn't it?
FM is probably connected internally after the A2DP encoding point, so can never be channelled through bluetooth.

If I'm running a custom recovery on a rooted phone/unlocked phone, do I need to flash the original image and lock the phone before I can update ?
also available here in Switzerland.
I have a question after installing this update am i need to reroot my phone or no.
Thanks
Edit: its impossible to flash this update in phones with custom recovery (error 7),
So can someone have the stock recovery.img to reverse to stock recovery to able flashing this OTA update then return to custom recovery.

Do me a favor and let you know if you hear of something. I use bluetooth all day at work on my phone and it's terrible! Have to literally have bluetooth volume as low as it goes to make it tolerable! Also getting a bluetooth stereo headset soon for music controls (hopefully they work as wired music controls such as volume control and skip/rewind tracks do not work on this device!!!) so hopefully my music playback won't be crap too. For ATT here no OTA update. Maybe a dev can extract this stuff so we can install without worrying about root and bootloader changes now we're all unlocked???

For what it's worth A2DP is fine. I listen to podcasts and music and whatnot on my bluetooth headset all the time and it's pretty great. People with bluetooth headsets remind me Robocops so not suprised that they talk with Optimus Prime on daily basis.
If you direct orders like this everything need to be on time.

OTA Update means lock/unlock BL first, and that would mean a loss of all data on the phone 30 GB of music, apps and user costumizations.... no hurry for that, and I could flash a custom rom with not having this problems... On the other hand I am very satisfied with stock rom!
I had made the backup and reverted to stock. Surprise no OTA, even if my CID appears in the zip and I am current on 1.14.401.18

I made this originally for the international Note 2 N7100 but it seems like it works on other samsung phones also. (I only tested it with 2 phones so there may be bugs)
It is the only Beats Audio that I have ever seen to work system-wide, from Youtube to Pandora. So after trying countless different "Beats Audio" zips on this site and not one single one working for my N7100 I have finally put together what I call Franken-Beats Audio. It takes files from all kinds of different Beats Audio zips (from the S3, the note 1, to the nexus, and S2) and now works 100% for me on my stock rooted n7100.
It's pretty self explanatory but here's some instructions...
Remove any previous audio mods first. It most likely won't work right with a modified kernel or other audio mods
1. Download zip below
2. Copy to SD card
3. Flash with cwm
4. Reboot
5. Settings, Sound, Music Effects, select DSPManager, Press OK.
6. Open DSPManager App, edit settings to your liking in the "Headset" tab.
7. Use new "Music" app to play songs and enjoy!
*BUGS*
So far the only bug I see is that enabling "Dynamic Range Compression" lowers effect of other settings or disables them completely. Solution? Don't turn it on.
Bluetooth settings don't seem to work. You can only control the audio from the "Headset" tab.
-------------------------------------------
My personal settings I enjoy using with my own Beats headphones are as follows:
Bass Boost: Enabled - Moderate
EQ: Enabled - Flat
Everything else is off
If you find any bugs feel free to report them here. I'll try to work on it but it is working fine for me right now. This may or may not work on other roms, I haven't tested it on anything but stock rooted N7100.
Thanks to everyone who supplied me with the files around this forum used to create my Franken-Beats

You could install an equalizer app, boost the bass, and get the same thing without degrading audio quality. Or, use Voodoo Sound, Boeffla Sound, ScoobyDoo Sound, or one of the other sound variants and have better quality and more options.
Would this work on AOSP?

Well, it's Beats...
I personally thinks Beats sounds like trash. It overpowers the mid-bass and suppresses the mids and treble, so all you get is this thumpy, muddy mess without any clarity or definition.
To each their own, but any time I hear anyone talking about how great Beats is, I immediately discount anything they say about audio.

Beats Audio is a set of items, mainly software. However, from what I have read, people that have hooked up an analyzer to the headphone jack of a phone with Beats Audio, there is more "noise" in the output with Beats on compared to off. Probably not something a user would notice with the change in the EQ curve. In any case the software side is just an EQ curve. If you really like to pump up the low end and kill the high end, get PowerAmp or similar and reproduce the EQ.

Power amp all day. Even used that on my rezound instead of their beats audio. Heavier bass in poweramp

Agreed about beats audio. I don't listen to rap, so I don't need mega bass bumping, feel me? =X I use player pro with dsp and tweaked EQ.

How does this compare to Noozxoide in terms of quality of sound?
Everyone is forgetting the original reason this was made was because I tried all the other audio mods on my GT-N7100 and none of them worked or had any effect. This is the only one which did what I wanted to do. And for the people who say it sounds bad, that depends on what you listen to and how loud you actually make it.

[Q] Noise in the background when playing music after 4.2.2 update

I have a strange problem after 4.2.2 update. When I connect headphones and start playing music or audiobook or anything else via headphones or internal speaker, I hear in the background some kind of silent but constant noise, it is there in the background, always. And its stops abut 2 second after I stop the music. I'm sure it didn't happens in 4.1.1 and started immediately after 4.2.2 update. And it really worries me, because I use this phone mostly for audiobooks... Help? anybody?
I got the same on original music application . Go get poweramp it solved the problem for me

Turning off beats audio pretty much relinquishes audio hiss, otherwise you can try flashing zeroinfinity`s audio mod which apparently also woks on 4.2.2.

So You are trying to tell me that this is normal? I'm sure everything worked fine on 4.1.1
Same issue in poweramp.
ryanjsoo, you're right, turning beats audio off helps a little... but this is ridiculous, beats audio device with hiss in the background when turned on.
I'm on stock right now, custom rom will help?

You can try using an external dac/amp such as a fiio e6, using a custom rom may help, try flashing this mod, make a backup since i cannot guarantee that it will work with 4.2.2 however i have heard of people having success, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2231742, otherwise i cannot think of anything else except backing up your apps and contacts, wiping data and flashing stock?, also, not sure if this works but using root explorer, under the directory etc, change all the 48000 ang 48 vales to 44100 and 44.1 in asound and audio_policy to remove any resampling which may destroy quality.

Thank you. I will try to do it, because right now my night sessions with audiobooks become a nightmare. Honestly, whole 4.2.2 update is a one big mistake in my opinion. They gave me hissing sounds, lock screen lags and take away some of my favorite widgets.
Can I downgrade and install viper x based on 4.1.1 via hansontool ?
EDIT: Problem solved. I've done another factory reset, this time with format data. Was getting ready to unlock BL but when I checked audio quality, there is no hissing sound, nor popping now. And general responsiveness is also improved. I don't get this, but it works now

[GUIDE] [7.1.x] [Not working?] Enable 24bit/192KHz playback on Poweramp 704

Please avoid opening this guide on the XDA apps, the images are messed up and displayed on the wrong places as always
Seems that this hack only makes Poweramp think that 192KHz works. Please try this and do this:
Open a terminal emulator
"su"
"dumpsys media.audio_flinger"
Just don't expect miracles for now!
I've been trying for months to make Poweramp work in hi-res mode on Nougat, and finally, it works! I'm pretty sure that the DAC in use is the Snapdragon one (I'm in MiFavor 5.0 and using the super/advanced switch does nothing, not even a stutter) but it's 192KHz still, so, it's better than nothing. If anyone can try on an LOS-based ROM (where the AKM DAC is supposedly used all the time) we may get 192KHz out of that DAC!
I'm not sure if this method wouldn't work on other Android versions. But I only tried on 7.1.1.
Please be sure that you downloaded Poweramp 704 from the official forum - the one on Play store is 703 which doesn't support Hi-Res on Nougat!
I found this fix on the Poweramp official forum, by user dhenyaw.
•Download a build.prop editor or a file manager with root access. Personally, I use Root Browser. If you will use a build.prop editor, just skip the next step.
•Once you open Root Browser, your root directory will appear. Scroll down and open the "system" folder, then scroll down and open the "build.prop" file
•Once you are in build.prop, you have to find the "ro.product.manufacturer" line. In my case it was around line 30.

•Add a "#" in front of the "ro.product.manufacturer=ZTE" line, so that you can revert the change if other things break. Also, write just below "ro.product.manufacturer=samsung" and "persist.audio.uhqa=1" just like in the picture 2:
•Save the changes, reboot your phone
After your phone boots, connect some headphones, open Poweramp, play a hi-res FLAC file and go to Audio - Output - Hi-res output, then check if the active output is Wired headsets and the frequency it is outputting to.
Enjoy!
Doesn't work for me. Build.prop just resets after a reset. But even with a soft reset, Poweramp's HiFi output still fails.
Probably cuz I have the Sauron mod on my phone, though I've seen that post you're talking abt on the Poweramp forum and it does seem to work for some devices/ROMs.
Oh well, I'll just wait for Poweramp to update. Whenever that will be. Lol.

I think that's because you have write protection on. Connect your phone to a PC, enable USB debugging, open CMD and see if ADB recognizes the phone. then write 'adb reboot disemmcwp' and the write protection should disappear

Alright. I got it working but there's something I'm a little suspicious about.
It's outputting and being processed by "SAMSUNG UHQA PCM" which I don't think the Axon 7 has. Plus, I was switching between Hi-Res and AudioTrack and AudioTrack actually sounded better. Hi-Res made it feel like I was listening to music in a box.
My guess is Hi-res is outputting through the Qualcomm DAC and not the AKM 4490. So while hi res works, it's not proper hi-res, IMO.
I'm still deciding whether to regress mine to B11 MM, unlock bootloader, update to B08, flash twrp and root and get ViPER4Android in it in compatability mode for system wide effect and DAC use, and debloat it. Don't really care about custom ROMs for it.

I think I should've added that somewhere. That is called a workaround... This works by telling Poweramp that your phone is a Samsung and has a UHQA DAC. This DAC somewhat works as the Qualcomm one, so it manages to drive it @ 192KHz. And the soundstage might be a little bit worse than the AKM DAC but it's in no way canned as you say. At least not with my headphones

Yeah, narrower soundstage was what I was trying to say but I couldn't find the words. Hahah. The difference is slight, but definitely noticable. Thing is, Sauron also forces the AKM DAC to be used system wide. So, despite Hi-Res failing, the sound is still being processed by the DAC.
I'll stick to defaults for now and wait for the PA update. I'm not saying no one should try this. If it works for you and everyone trying it, cool.
Did you do this with stock? It doesn't work with dark room (a LOS rom). What I normally use is "ro.lenovo.hifi_support=true", which does work. It does say 16 bit minimum, but I think as long as poweramp is using the hi-fi mode our phone will use the high quality audio.
Honestly, I wish there was a way to check the output to see what quality is being used. Anybody have an idea of what to use? It would be good to compare stock to all these other mods/apps.

It works on stock and LOS. If you did it right your phone should appear as 'Samsung UHQA' on the audio settings of poweramp
I think Dark Rom is based on LOS, so it should be the same?
You could compare but you need (very expensive) recording equipment then compare the two waveforms. But at the same time, if you can't notice the difference, then why would you use 192KHz anyways?

I have a G530FZ and this worked for me, now the HI-Res output works at 192 KHz (48KHz previously).
Thanks!!!

Hold on, we're not so sure that it works really. Can you check?
Download a terminal emulator and do this:
Type "su "
Hit enter
Then type "dumpsys media.audio_flinger"
Then just share that here
So this is great news unless you're an axon 7 user or any user of a non standard(non Samsung UHQA) dac.

Looks like its not working after all. I launched the terminal while playing some 192 KHz files and every sample rate mentioned is 48KHz.
Placebo effect!

Yeah, it seems so. The only thing I'm sure of is that doing this on the stock system of the Axon 7 actually improves the highs. I'll modify the thread to add this for now; I'll need someone to dump that file on stock with this mod later

Well I'm not sure if it actually works anywhere, but I still believe that highs improve substantially on stock with this mod (without using the AK4490).
The Samsung UHQA DAC is in no way standard. I believe it is the DAC on the Exynos chips maybe

This is the problem. It's hard enough knowing if high frequency and bit depth audio works when sources are available. You can bet in a lot of cases where it seems audio is passed correctly it's either a display error or some kind of dithering or resampling is going on.
I would love to understand how to read the process our phones take when processing audio in different scenarios but it just seems impossible. As for the stock music player working with higher fidelity files we don't know this either. It doesn't make sense for it not to but then it also doesn't make sense that a lot of software/drivers can't handle the hardwares maximum specifications.
If there was some kind of framework and a front end that could read the process it would be awesome (like graphedit on Windows) it would be useful but even that didn't work if non-standard renders we're used.
I try my best to not get worked up about it, it's very annoying to know that probably something like this will never be known..or fixed or whatever. Here we have a nice DAC with specifications to suit our hi res music collection yet probably it's all being downsampled to 44.1 or 48khz 16bit.
Hopefully the rumours are true and zte focus more on using the dac with external applications in oreo.
