US AT&T iPhone 5 SIM on Omate TS, Voice is good but data not working - Ornate TrueSmart

Hi All,
Device: 1900 1/8 TrueSmart (US)
ROM/Firmware version: (stock)
Baseband: MOLY.WR8.W1315.MD.WG.MP.V4.P1, 2013/11/09 14:19 (stock)
Changes made to stock firmware: Framaroot + Play Store apk installed
What OS is on your PC if your PC was used: N/A
Issue: I took my US AT&T iPhone 5 SIM (with a nano to micro adaptor) on Omate TS. The voice call is clear and no problem at all. TS recognized the phone number right after a reboot. However there's no data connection.
Steps Taken:
The Wireless & Network/SIM management/Data connection shows ATT.
The Wireless & Network/SIM management/More/Mobile Network/ shows
1. Data connection: ATT
2. 3G service: Enable 3G/ ATT
3. The APN is correctly generated
4. Network operator: Manual or Auto, it will only let me choice the ATT 3G.
However it won't connect any data.
in Setting/System/About TrueSmart/Status/SIM Staus
Mobile network state is "Disconnected"
I tried another SIM (US AT&T iPhone 5S), same result. I read in the other tread someone mentioned that the US AT&T iPhone will lock to IMEI, but those 2 SIM is swappable between my 5 and 5S...
Any idea? Thanks in advance.

I can say this. I'm on NET10 AT&T and unless I programmed the APN manually it never worked. That's why I replaced Omate's APN list in the Patch/MOD and it worked with no issues.

ATT HSPA+ works

Thanks Lokifish! Confirmed that ATT HSPA+ profile works for my case (figured out that iPhone 5/5S are on 4G network - duh). The reception for data is not as good as the same sim is in an iPhone. Sometimes I have to go near a window to get connected (don't need that for iPhone in my house). The speed... is much slower of course. I got the best 1.55/0.45 Mbps d/u 87ms vs 22.33/7.64, 17ms on WIFI. vs best 21.33/7.67 17ms on LTE iPhone.
The TS gets very warm using wireless data btw. But it's a good start I can finally try to run with it and test gps and fitness apps!
BTW the voice call quality is good. I was worried before from the what I heard in Chinese Omate forum. But now I believe that they fixed the mic feedback issue at least start from the US 1/8 version.
Anyway hope this post can help people use the same setup as me too!

Hi guys, Great posts about ATT. So i have a question. I have an aio wireless sim(AIO is owned by ATT) and I am able to get voice service working but not data. I am guessing its the APN settings being guessed incorrectly because the TS things the SIM is an ATT sim when it is inserted. I try to go to APN setting on the phone but the screen is blank and doesnt allow me to edit the settings. I need help in figuring out how to change the APN settings for my TS . Any help is appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Chale

Run the patch and all this APN nonsense melts away for almost every carrier world wide.

Hi Lokifish. Thank you for the quick response. I did run the patch and it didnt fix it for me. I can now see the apn screen title but there is no content underneath it or any form to enter apn settings. Are you the one who is maintaining the apn settings list? I can send you the APN settings for AIO wireless if you don't have them. I am excited to finally have my TS but its been frustrating trying to get data working on it. Thanks in advance for your help.
Just for reference here is the APN settings for AIO

Hi Lokifish,
I didn't know if you had a chance to view my response but wanted to see what your thoughts are and see if you might be able to add AIO into your MVNO APN list that you have built for your patch.
Thanks in advance,
Chale

Sorry, been really busy. You can add an APN by doing the following;
Go to Settings> More> Mobile Networks> Access Point Names
Swipe from left to right to pull up the menu
Select "New APN"
Fill out the needed fields
Swipe from left to right to pull up the menu
Select "Save"
I'll update the patch when I get the time.

Hi, are you refering to the mod patch/ status bar? from the general page?

No. I was referring to the EnSec patch which is no longer available and was never updated for the new EU 2100 hardware.

One of the nice things Lokifish had added in to the EnSec patch was a large number of APN settings for carriers that Omate did not bother including.

My AT&T atrix can't get edge on Tmobile

I unlocked and rooted my Atrix I changed the apn to t mobile I get the E but the atrix still trys to access At&T on the browser and market what am I missing???
Mine did this same thing with my carrier in Japan, I could call and text and I would get H+ icon but no data. I sent mine back for a replacement.
Did you activate the phone on AT&T before unlocking and changing SIM?
I am facing the similar problem too. I use Atrix with Simple Mobile number. Mine catches E but doesn't load anything. Always ended up showing connection error. Is it a hardware problem?
Sounds like apn settings are incorrect.

I don't know what your apn settings should be, just sounds like that is the source of your problem.
Edit...look at some of these:

that post is where I got the setting to try to change to when it had a problem. later I found out that it's the same setting as the default though the username and password is unknown since it's a star.

[Q] So I can know for sure - Springboard, ICS, and GSM voice?

I've really been considering a T-Mobile Springboard lately, but getting it banks on the assumption that flashing ICS on it would unlock GSM voice/text, and let me use the Springboard as a phone by putting my T-Mobile USA SIM in it.
One person in the general discussion topic basically said that it would work, but I just want to make sure before I plop $300 on a device when I could have gotten a different tablet instead (likely the HTC Flyer 3G at ~$450). I'm assuming I'd have to delete the /efs folder to keep T-Mobile from picking up the IMEI and blocking the SIM with the voice plan on it, correct? And would I be expecting slower data speeds after flashing? I'm not concerned about that part, just wondering.
EDIT: And as the title suggests, I'm talking about the T-Mobile Springboard, not the international Huawei Mediapad.
ICS and Phone work for my Springboard
I have a T-Mobile Springboard that I purchased on ebay. I just flashed the ICS in place of stock T-Mobile a couple of days ago. I had a T-mobile SIM for prepaid Mobile broadband, and got an error announcement when trying to use the new phone feature.
I called T-mobile and had my plan changed to a pay by the day plan just to check the phone functionality. It works great! I have only used it as speakerphone, but assume you could pair it with a Bluetooth headset.
Note - the IMEI from the Springboard will not work to set up a voice and data plan. T-Mobile rep said it was invalid for a voice plan and asked for another IMEI off another GSM phone. If you already have a SIM and plan for a smartphone you should be able to plug it in and go I expect.
Sweet, good to know, think I may have just decided on a tablet. And yeah, I'd be swapping the SIM in my current T-Mobile phone in and out for phone/data capability, not a separate plan for it.
Yes it works great. Well worth it wont find a better deal
I have a SIM card on T-Mobile for the Value Talk+Text+2GB. From what I read here, this will this work fine for the tablet with gsm voice?
I have the same plan, and the voice does work. However, I am so far not able to get both voice and data to work on the plan. I really bought the thing to use over wifi but registered a T-mobile account to try out the phone feature and to allow me the ability to request a SIM unlock.
Just realized I had turned network data off and hadn't verified all three services worked together - so far the answer for me is no. I turned wifi off and network data on, and now I currently can get voice and text working but not internet over T-mobile network. Trying to open a webpage currently just sends me to the my.t-mobile login page.
I called T-mobile support and was told that since it is a tablet, they would not support both voice and data for it.
Is anyone else having luck with getting both voice and data over t-mobile network?

Areas like user/pass/server should be blank (ie: nothing at all, anything <not set> should be blank)
The other red highlighted areas that you put down don't really matter. If it still doesn't work after that then I dunno... it has to be something else.
I wish we could get a conclusive yes or no to whether or not this damn tablet works just like a smart phone (just like HTC Flyer 3G) so I can decide which stinking one to get.

I'm guessing, since that's the folder I see mentioned in other phone-tablet topics to keep the carrier from catching on.

Is there no ramification (on the phones software) for deleting that folder? Will the carrier just see it as a generic device?

I don't believe so, but you obviously want to back it up elsewhere anyway just in case, and I believe that's the idea of it (carrier unable to detect IMEI and therefore unable to restrict you in some way based off of it).
I don't have any good news on this. I took another run at T-mobile customer service today and was again told that this device was not permitted to have both voice/text plus internet. I can have voice and text on the 2$/day plan or I can have data and no voice on a tablet mobile broadband plan.
T-mobile said "Tablets are not phones!" I demonstrated while on the phone with the rep my ability to make calls and text with the Mediapad.
I argued every logical angle I could conceive, and the rep agreed with any logic I presented for having the 3 services available all at once for tablets. While we were in complete agreement that it would be 'nice' if it would work, he could not suggest a plan that would allow for 'talk text web' on this device.
The rep did say that T-mobile was 'working on' a new plan to allow for these tablets with phone capabilities.

What you should do is just ask for the smartphone value 500 plan.
500 mins, unlimited text, 2GB of data for $49/month
Once that's on your sim or whatever, try to access everything. Don't ask for a plan that doesn't exist.

Could try, but I expect then I would just be out $50 and still only get phone and text. Two different T-mobile reps have said they have no plan that will allow for talk, text, and web for this device.
My experience is as a new customer as my current phone is on AT&T. Possible someone who is already on a T-mobile smartphone plan can get it to work with their existing SIM.
I am quite happy with this device as wifi only for now. Was mostly just curious if I could get the phone function to work. Working now to get a SIM unlock so I can try the thing with AT&T.
Just got my springboard tonight. First thing I installed the rooted ICS leak. Popped in my TMobile Monthly4g Sim (on $30 5gb Walmart plan) and I have phone and SMS but no data. Apps time out and browser redirect to my.TMobile.com... Really want to get this working... Any ideas guys? I'm willing to test. my next step may be a straighttalk byod Sim... If that doesn't work I'll have to move to AT&T and the galaxy tab plus

I doubt it would work on a ghetto plan like that anyways (isn't that prepaid also?). Wish someone would try a real plan.

I have someone working on an MMS app. Unfortunately they don't have much time these days. We always have MMS problems when flashing devices to Cricket. The app would work the same way as the one for the CDMA carriers.
I tested it with Solavei. It works, but the notifications with JB are off.
So you guys saying I can buy this phone from verizon then put my ATT sim in and everything will work, data ?

You should get talk, text, data (HSPA, I think there are some questions about HSPA+, and LTE is a different band so you won't get that).
You'll have to enter the AT&T APN. I can send with GOsms and the MMSC entered in those settings. Still can't receive. That's why I have a friend working on that.
I usually work on CDMA stuff and have a normal 9/5. That's why I've left the door kind of open here.
can't get ATT APN to work
I am having trouble setting up my DNA to work on ATT data network. I put the micro sim from my iphone 4s in the DNA, changed the APN following op's settings but could never get mobile data connected. Making phone call is fine. Did I do anything wrong? Any input appreciated.

This device had no problem getting on AT&T right out of the box. If someone wants to include APN settings for other carriers in this thread, please feel free to. I'll get it started.
EDIT: Under the condition that this is a repost... Cyber slap the crap out of me.... and delete or merge.

I am able to receive mms with a Tmo sim. I have not changed any apn settings so no data yet.
I was able to just drop in a T-mo card and pick up data.. But as you'll know edge only. With brief moments of HSDPA when I'm assuming I was close enough to a tower that has been upgraded to the 1900 band. Well I decided to go to at&t and grab a sim to see if there was an improvement. I couldn't personally get any of the APN settings to work that were presented in the op and being that I'm new to anything gsm I've got no clue why: Lol.. Could it be a location thing? However I did find a setup that does indeed pickup data for me. Figured I'd share just in case there were others having the same issue. Keep in mind MMS is still hit and miss. I've had them go through out&in but it fails most of the time.

Since we all know there is an issue sending and receiving MMS, I do the bare minimum to get my AT&T SIM to work. I create a new APN and only change 3 lines.....
Under "Name" I put PTA
Under "APN" I put phone
Under "MMS Port" I put 8080 [more secure than port 80]
Leave everything else alone. Don't add your MMSC address, proxy or anything else.
Now save and you are good to go. I get HSDPA. Don't know if it's + or not, but I get the exact same speeds as I normally do with my AT&T phones.

I personally tried exactly as you referenced... I got zilch! Lol.. my device would not grab data until I used the Cingular apn information. As far as the MMS you're exactly right. I tried numerous combination with no result. The few times it did go through seem to be a fluke. I just threw the Cingular apn settings up because I was able to grab data and hopefully it may help someone else that tried the simple apn settings to no avail... I'm going to order a Straight Talk sim this weekend and see how that goes as well. I've got a month prepaid for both T-Mobile and AT&T so I've got a little time to play around with everything.
Side note: man my family and friends thought I was a dork before now I've got a VZW Nex and GSM DNA that I'm carrying around all the time! Lol

I guess my friend is nowhere to be found for the MMS app.
Anyways I think it has something to deal with the APN whitelist in the build.prop. Notice they don't allow for the mms APN. Does someone want to play with that as I don't have another carrier's SIM right now.

I am willing to do whatever you need. I have the DNA Unlocked and Rooted on stock ROM. I have a valid AT&T and T-Mobile SIM card. However, I am coming from 5 years of iPhone hacking, so I would need to be handled with kid gloves.
Just let me know what you need done, or point me to a tutorial thread.

[Q] Problem with International Roaming

I have a pretty much brand new L769 from Tmo.
Sim unlocked.
Traveling in France using an AT&T sim.
Phone does not connect to data network but calls/SMS work (data enabled, roaming enabled). Any ideas?

Sorry to necro this, but when I add an APN and then save it, it goes back to apn list but is not there as an option. I've unlocked and can make calls/text but no data at all. I am unrooted, is there something I'm missing or do I need root to edit apn? Thanks a ton.

You should have a radio button to the right of each apn config. Tap on the button for the one you want.
If that does not work try toggling "Airplane Mode".
If that does not work, you have the wrong apn settings. You will need to contact your cellular provider and ask them for the correct Android APN settings.
Good luck.

Helpfull APN info for people using Verizon S4's on AT&T

I have recently taken my Verizon Galaxy S4 and put it on the AT&T network (Prepaid $60 a month plan) and after hours of reading these forums and trying apn settings posted I found some information via Google that might prove useful to those of you that wish to do the same.
Before I start, I am getting HSPA+ speeds of around 12MBps, I have full working data, text, calls, and MMS. At the moment I haven't been able to get the tethering to work, wifi or otherwise.. says number not found. I assume that means its checking to see if its available for a plan that allows it via AT&T.
APN settings I used are as follows.
Name: ATT HSPA+
APN: phone
Proxy: <Leave in Blank>
Port: <Leave in Blank>
Username: <Leave in Blank>
Password: <Leave in Blank>
Server: <Leave in Blank>
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: <Leave in Blank>
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
APN Protocol: Leave it to the Default one
Bearer: leave it to the Default one
For those of you unfamiliar with how to change the APN settings: apn settings for Android - For Android, you should go to Settings > Wireless Connections > More > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names.
Its fairly straight forward. Make sure that once your finished adding the apn info you hit your menu key and save, then back out and select the apn you want to use.

There are a couple video's on that site as well if you need a walk through.
I take no credit for the video's or the website, I am only relaying some useful information that I had trouble finding.
Hope this helps.
Curious if you have tried to tether and if it works? I was able to get T-Mobile prepay working on the S4. The only issue was that I couldn't get around the tether upsell page. I read everything. Thanks

No, I couldn't get the tethering to work.. I'm using all the stock stuff on my S4 at the moment but once I flash something I'll play with it some more.. But as it stands so far that is all I have found that doesn't work.
