Solved: Samsung Note 2 Wifi problem "Unstable WiFi connection" - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Problem:
Since Android 4.3 update, on Version Samsung Note 2 I continued to get WiFi connection error "Unstable WiFi connection". Also, WiFi internet speed was noticebly low.
I cleared dilvik cache, rebooted, disconnected and reconfigured WiFi - none of which helped. In fact, the problem is not with the phone or operating system. The problem was in my the WiFi network channel. My Motorola router had automatically used channel 1 which was also used by another 4 networks in the the neighborhood.
Solution:
Install WiFi Analyzer on your phone. Find out a channel with the least interference.
Reconfigure your WiFi network to use that channel. I have had no WiFi errors since then.
Good luck.

Thanks!! Worked great. I'm out of the "crowd" now. I think everyone in my neighborhood was on the same channel...lol. Changed mine and now...
Looks like just me and one other in the area on "my" channel now..... VERY noticible improvement !!

Hello
Thank you very much for your recomendation but could you explain me how to change to a different channel ?

Use your router settings. Some are Web bases depending on your provider. My unit is a "2wire". I did a Google search on how to change "2wire router settings"......how to and link popped right up. I then changed the channel with my computer....it was pretty easy.

Did you do the second part ...... installing the WiFi analyzer just tells you if your router signal is in a "crowd"....after that you adjust your home router to a clearer band..."out of the crowd". Your WiFi reception will be better. If it happens on "public wifi" their signal strength being broadcast could be at fault.

WIFI issues, new device

Hello wondering if anyone can help.
Bought the device yesterday, galaxy player 5.0
The only way I can connect to the wifi is if I disable WEP and have the router open.
When I use WIFI, either from the cell phone or my home WIFI using WEP, the device is stuck in obtaining IP address, as soon as I remove the WEP and have the router open, it connects.
None of my other devices have this issue, only this one.
Any ideas?
or
Should I return it?
Thanks.
I found that if my router was broadcasting its SSID my 5 would connect, if it was hiding the SSID it would not (just sat there searching for IP). Maybe that's the problem?
Mine has problem too on my belkin54g (open config), connect and disconnection all the time pretty annoying, i really hope there will come a fix out from samsung since it came with 2.3.5 update....
Thanks!!!
Thanks guys got it working.
Changed password on the router and did a reset to it.
Seems that did the trick.
Almost returned the player.
And the worst is that I had already installed a shield for the screen, 15 bucks!!!
Anyway, thanks for the response!!!
Hidden SSID need patch for YP-G70
Just install HiddenSSID Enabler from market, it'll work for YP-G70. You need run it once and get your hidden wifi connected, then can uninstall it. Looks like it is just a patch but really works.
I was under the impression you could use a hidden SSID under stock 2.3.5. Under Wifi Settings, there is the "Add Wi-Fi network" option, and it looks like it can be used for hidden SSIDs.

No, it won't work coz hidden SSID not supported by GB.

Try using WPA instead of WEP. WEP is ancient, and some newer wifi chipsets don't interoperate well with it because it's so old and it's been HIGHLY recommended to ditch it on routers for at least 5 years. WEP was known to be insecure almost a decade ago!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like I remember reading a few years ago that hidden ssid's were not part of the 802.11 b,g, or n specifications. I thought that while a lot of devices had that function, it wasn't exactly "compliant".

Yes, that's true. I haven't seen any android smartphone on GB (don't know what's in ICS) can connect hidden SSID unless apply the hidden SSID Enabler patch. However, iphone / ipod has no problem.

wifi disconnect/reconnect fixed
On my 4.0 US, the wifi would disconnect and reconnect constantly. To fix it, go to ur network (on windows go to start and click network or type in ur IP address) and go to LAN settings. Change the dhcp lease time to 2 weeks or anything bit forever. It resolved my issue completely

[Q] WiFi fluctuating issues

Since this problem has not been resolved on other threads where it has been asked, i'll start a new thread for this
I have a Rogers (GSM) EVO 3D.. Got it last month.. On stock RUU and as well as Yoda's ICS ROM (Yoda's Kernel), the wifi automatically keeps turning off and on when its enabled.. tried flashing Stock RUU again but that also is unable to solve this problem..
Can this be a Hardware issue?? any insights plz..
It's definitely not a solution to your problem, but you might try installing Wifi Analyzer which is free from the Play Store to gather more information. WiFi drops can sometimes be attributed to channel conflicts between multiple access points, and that tool will help you see how strong your signal is and what might be interfering.

ramjet73.. thanks a ton.. interesting observation.. my wifi router is placed hardly meters from my desk with almost no blockage is between. normally the signal strength is -85dBM. but when wifi analyzer is switched on it increases to -65dBM(goes down once its closed..
Its currently on Channel 6 and all the channels are with full star ratings.
Only devices attached to my router is a wired desktop, and on wifi a laptop and 2 android phones.
The problem has not occurred while wifi analyzer was switched on.
Will update after further observation.
another option could be to go into you settings and while in the wifi section, hit menu and and go to advanced and check the box for best wireless etc...
That might help as well.

[Q] Wi-Fi Problem

Hello all, I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 with Stock 4.1.2 unrooted and baseband version I9300DXEMB1. The problem I have is when I try to connect with my home WiFi from my room, it says Authentication Error Occurred. I have to be directly infront of the router then it'll connect and allow me to load webpages.
If I stand in front of the router and connect, It will get connected without any problems but as soon as I return back to my room or any other place that is more than 3 feet away from the router, it wouldnt load any webpages or anything that requires an Internet connection. Then when I toggle WiFi off and on again, the authentication error occurred problem will be back. It's like my phone can only connect and load webpages when it is 1cm in front of the router. Does anyone here have any suggestion on how to help me? I'm pretty sure that it is not my router's problem because my computer and Galaxy S4 in my room can connect just fine and load webpages just fine. I've tried searching the Internet for solutions but have not found anyone with the exact same problem with range/signal strength hence I started this thread.

Suggest wipe phone install stock rom and test .
If it connects to other routers/ wifi its your router a problem .
I had these kinds of problems with two stock ROMs, do not remember the exact versions, but when I upgraded the problems were gone. That was while using the exact same Yank kernel, so it doesn't seem kernel related. It is a very annoying bug though! But upgrading ROM will fix it, I know for a fact that GNA5 doesn't have this bug.
Have you tried using wifi on other places on the same phone?

Since I saw that lots of people have the same problem. I like many other, I have done everything said here, and all over the web.
Here is what I did to fix my problem...
1 - Check if you have any special char on the wi-fi SSID like "!,@,',ã,á,~,ç,ã" etc...
and Remove it.
2 - On your router check if you have ip adress ranged configured like: 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.150, and change it to the wide range: 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254
This two steps solved my problem after I have tried everything stated here and over the web
I just registered to share this and hope to help someone.

Plus, you can try to change the router transmission channel to a lower number and see if it works.

I've tried other Unsecured networks around my area. Same problem. Very sure it is not my router problem as my other phone and computer can connect just fine and even getting at least 20mbps speed. This S3 can only connect when I'm physically beside the router.

Thanks for suggestions, I've also tried Static IP and checked my router settings and that it doesnt have those punctuations in the SSID and also the start and end IP is pretty wide from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.253 (I don't think that 1 difference from .254 could make a difference could it?) I'm really starting to believe that It's a hardware issue. I'm probably going to contact a person to diagnose the phone tomorrow. Maybe it could be a malfunction of the WiFi chips in the phone.

If there is authentication error then that means that the phone can detect the wireless network so the hardware seems ok. Did you try to change the router channel? And even try changing the transmission from a/b/g/n to "G only" or "N only".

That's exactly what I thought too. Why can't it connect if it can detect the network? And I've since tried changing channels only for it to return to the same result, authentication error. And my router settings do not have an option to change the radio type. I can't remember exactly where but it might be Android forums or something (read too many different forums over the past few days) and this guy said that maybe it was some power management failure thing. I'm not an expert with hardware and can't provide any explanation or theory. Maybe there's some other component that manages the power to use that'll enable the phone to receive data from the router and that thing malfunctions while the main wifi chip still works that explains why I can still detect wifi networks?
[Edit]I'm also thinking that maybe because this Imaginary power management component inside the phone is malfunctioning/not receiving enough power, that's why when im in a room different from where the router is, i cannot connect because the phone isn't receiving enough power to validate the data from the radio waves and also because when Im standing beside the router then can load webpages just fine because the Signal strength is high and probably the radio waves from the router is emitting high energy so the power management component doesn't require as much energy to receive data compared to when Im in my room. Something like the router shouting and your phone needs a certain amount of energy to hear the voice from the room otherwise you cant but if you're standing beside it you can hear it no matter what. (This is just my theory and what Im thinking the problem is. It is not an explanation but just my opinion. This information could be totally wrong for all I know.)

On your phone: Settings > WiFi > Menu > WPS
Rebooting the router is also recommended. Maybe you can also try changing the security on the router to WPA/WPA2

Yep, WPS is supported and enabled on my router. Use it cause I was too lazy to retype my password everytime i flashed a firmware on the phone haha. And same thing. when I try to connect using WPS, the phone (in my room or any location 10cm or more away from router) doesnt react even after pushing the button on the router. But if I were to stand beside the router, WPS works without any problems.

No improvement, unfortunately The progress bar just crawls to the end and the phone just says WPS failed. This was approximately 1 meter away from the router, I have to be less than 1 metre from the router to get a connection. Btw, router was rebooted several times and Security has always been WPA/WPA2-PSK, not very interested in changing the security to other types like WEP. Just not very trustable

I can understand that this is very frustrating for you. Believe me, I've had issues with phones and wifi
Ok, so I found 2 short threads that you could read:
Link 1
Link 2
Summary:
- try the steps in Link 1
- Change phone frequency from 2.4ghz to 5GHz (had this option in Omega ROM 4.3-based)
- 2 users report that the issue is fixed in CM9 (or even other CM roms)
- Might be a mainboard issue after all.
PS: Surprisingly, some of the people reporting the issue have used Omega rom in the past and faced the issues since then. (I didn't have any issues though so I cant blame the rom)

Don't worry about Knox, it is not present in 4.3, so you can just flash GNA5 and be done with it! I do recommend Nova or Apex launcher though, way smoother!
For all the other people here, this is a known bug with certain routers that are not 100% compliant with the WiFi standard and therefor do not confirm the handshake. I have had these problems with certain ROMs as well (cannot exactly remember which ones) and after flashing another ROM (at the moment I am on GNA5) Samsung fixed it, while it is not even their issue, the issue/bug lies within the routers that pose problems.

Really? Because with the Galaxy S4, late 4.2.2 firmwares and all 4.3 and above firmwares had new Knox bootloaders which means no turning back to old 4.2.2 ROMs and also the Knox 0x1 flag which to my knowledge is not resettable at the time of this writing.

I'm experiencing similar issues after I took the 4.4.2 update, and now previously stable wifi access points are not very unstable, I have great signal strength but it wont pass data and I get that stupid connection is unstable message. This is ridiculous, and this is a fully clean factory defaulted install.

I got my VZW S4 to stop throwing that error by assigning a static IP to it. So instead of my router assigning a new IP address every time the S4 connects, it always connects with the same IP. No more of that "internet unstable" error since doing that.
Worth a try.

Unable to connect to wifi !FIXED!

Hey everyone. Im having bit of a problem. Today my wifi network disconected for a couple of seconds. Than it worked again. Evrything is connected exept for my phone. it was able to connect to it earlyer. I already contacted my internet provider and they said they couldn't do anything about it. (they gave me the usual steps like reset your router and stuff, didnt work) My phone wont even show the network on my screen. it is able to see other networks (but not connect cuz i dont know the password of my neighbors). Im running honor 5x w ressurection remix and twrp. i just flashed my rom to it yesterday, do you maybe think this has something to do with it?
I hope someone can help me.
Have you tried going into your saved networks and forgetting your home wifi network?
Are you certain your home network's 2.4Ghz range is working properly? Remember the Honor 5x cannot use/see 5Ghz wifi
So for anyone who is having this problem and might have read this for help, this is how i fixed it. Go onto your network settings (you can probably find it somewhere on your provider page) and change your wifi router chanel to either 1,6,or11 (those are most stable but others will work too). If that didn't fix it than i dont know what will.
I hope i helped someone with this post.
