I got my 12.2 yesterday and also the Bamboo UK2, and the S-pen replacement (said official Samsung, but the box was trashed and open when I got it). All from Amazon.
I've tried all three and they all seem to work pretty well. What I did was various drawing and scribbling with each, followed by drawing some technical shapes repeatedly and trying to connect and match lines. Also understand I have a cheap plastic screen cover on the 12.2, I'll have to see what I think when I get my glass cover.
The included stylus is nice and I like the tip on it the best, but its way too light. This internal stylus the hovering dot is the most on target (from viewing with my eyes) with where the mark will be on the tablet. It matches very well also if I don't look at the dot and just act like the tablet is paper. Drawing hexes was great, but the lines are very heavy, not much pressure difference here. I would choose this one first, except its too flimsy.
Bamboo feel UK2. Nice weighting to this pen, but I don't like the rough plastic surface, it feels like I'm holding raw wood (yuck), why didn't they make it smooth? The hovering dot seems off with where the tip is, a pixel or two off it seems like, and it changes with the angle I'm holding the pen. I don't like that. However if I don't pay attention to that, and just draw like the tablet is paper, the marks come out right where I want them to and expect them to. That is good. This pen has the best pressure sensitivity, it is easy to make thin or thick lines. This is the one I'm choosing to do most work with right now.
Samsung replacement S-pen with eraser. Too light. This pen has a similar offset as the UK2, but its different somehow, the offset is different between the dot and the pen in a different way. This pen also does work well if I forget about the hovering dot and just draw. I would choose this pen third of the three, but I'm going to try the mod/trick putting it into a G2 and see how that works out.
So overall I don't really like any of these pens, but the UK2 feel works out the best for me I think in terms of overall functionality. The cheap jerks only send two replacement tips with it (one hard, one soft). All the rest had at least 4 if not more replacement tips.

I have been trying to use the supplied stylus in various writing programmes. I have found the retractable end quite annoying and have come up with a solution. The stylus fits very nicely inside a Parker roller ball pen. I just had to pack the inside top end of the pen with paper. the grey point of the stylus looks like a felt tip pen and it is a joy to use with the likes of Journal. In meetings people think go are using a real pen. Just dont forget to take your pen to work with you.

I too find the original stylus difficult to hold .. I don't like the pens that have ballpoint and stylus only because I know myself all too well and know that one day I will scratch my screen by using the wrong end. . LUCKY FOR ME .. in my business I deal with a lot of jewelry and jewelers. Last week I got an antique silver mechanical pencil in with a bunch of scrap silver jewelry. It has a loop on the top to attach to a necklace .. long necklace .. and one of the jewelers that frequent our shop removed parts of the inside of the pencil and gave me a stylus point made from ivory. He made that tip round and smooth and it is awesome. I will post a picture later .. I forgot it at my office on Friday. I have been wishing I had it all weekend.

somtimes i don't use shifts pen, i use my fingers or my montblanc starwalker, but is a little heavy, for my customers is a pleasure for the eyes, i hopeto find a kind of stylus less heavy, but elegant like your geoff.

I hope you are joking because that is not how I meant my post to come off. Believe this, I will drop it on the tile floor and break the tip, long before this post gets cold. I have also written down the name of the pen to make my own like yours. I never would have mentioned the ivory thing if your post hadnt arrived around the same time as my new stylus. I am just lucky with the bullion business for my find. I have in the past gotten a Tiffany stylus from the scrap. Search ebay ..you will maybe find one. It is about half as tall as a regular pen with a cap. I rarely use it because I am afraid of using the cap.
A great stylus to get if you could find one is the "bullet" I think it was called. It was made for the game machine Zodiac .. Some guy made them to order out of silver and also stainless I think I lost mine long ago.
I have one other I like where the top of the pen is a stylus, the other end a pen. I removed the pen part and also the clip that was close to the top because it was always in the way .. I have a dozen maybe. I will take a pic of all of them. I am never satisfied I guess.

as guy who uses tablet pcs I use my tablet pc pens (yes they were designed for an active digtiver screen) they work fine as the stylus for any touch screen interface like what the shift has. Tablet PC pens do not have any regular inking tips so there are perfect for anyone worried about accidentally writting in ink on their shift's screen.
There are plenty of used ones on ebay just do a search for "tablet pen" and pick the one with sytle you like.

Doesn't look like it has a very fine point which would be the only reason I would want a stylus, for more precision... When I'm trying to grab something my steak fries are too big for..
It's got a domed tip that is squishy, so it's as precise as you want depending on pressure. The whiteboard app is the only thing I've ever seen that took advantage of a fine point and it works perfectly.
I iPad Touch came with a similar stylus. Works great. My wife got some from Taiwan that have angled rubber ends for about $0.50 a piece. They work pretty good too. Similar to an pencil eraser.
So far I haven't needed on on the G-Tab and I've got "huge" fingers.
Try it with multi memo
I have one and have used it, briefly, with an app called multi-memo for taking notes.
Those Chinese ones are so cheap. They are too light and you have to drag them across the screen minimizing accuracy. I bought it for Stickdraw, def. Not worth it. I think i'll try this one.
Is it kind of heavy or really light? I want one that's heavy like a pen.
The stylus actually has some weight to it and does indeed feel like holding a real pen, it looks and feels like a quality handwriting implement. You'd have to really work to damage the metal casing, it remains to be seen how durable the rubber dome tip will be.
Took me a few minutes to get used to the squidgy, bulbous tip but then I was navigating around, playing games with it and testing my handwriting in a paint-mode note in 'Note Everything'. If only I could find a notepad application with good handwriting recognition*, I'd be in hog heaven...
* One that actually recognizes properly formed characters, not abstract sets of strokes
I bought one of those cheap Chinese ones (3 pack for $6) and was really disappointed. Then I looked online for ways to make your own. I was familiar with using those antistatic bags from hard drives and computer components, but then noticed one method that uses a common household sponge.
I took an old metal pen I had that I really liked, but didn't have ink anymore and took the tip off. I then cut off a small cube of a new sponge (with my wife's permission) and "screwed" it into the spot where the metal tip was on the pen. Worked like a charm.
I tried it on everything from my tablet to my iPod and my phone and it worked great on everything. I playd around with the updated tablet optimized version of Autodesk Sketchbook Express and it worked out great!
There are lots of videos on YouTube of how to make them, but using a metal pen seems to be what looks best. Some of the others look terrible.
Here's a picture, in case anyone is curious. I may get a pack of a different color of sponges because I don't like yellow, but that's all my wife had at the house when I did this project.
I'm also going to retrofit those crappy Chinese styluses I got, as they have metal housings. Should work the same as the pen did. Just need to rip off the rubber heads and maybe drill out the insides to get the sponge to fit and make contact with the housing.
Anyone know of a decent stylus I can buy that will register on the Gen8 screen?

for the 28, 32, and 43, which use resistive touch screens, anything will work. i personally have nice results on my 32 using a nintendo DS stylus. they're also cheap, so you don't have to worry about losing them occasionally.
for a 70 or 101, you'd want a capacitive stylus as the above posters suggested.

I like the DIY pen. I'm gonna start cutting up some old antistatic bags and see how it works. I have a couple pens, and neither can do dots. It will draw a line, but just pressing to the screen without moving doesn't draw a dot. As soon as it stops moving, it stops inputting. Horrible for Angry Birds, because it lets the bird go as soon as you pull back the sling and start aiming.
I think the A43 digitizer is plastic (which is bad, from the point of view of recognition--glass produces better accuracy), and what's worse, a softer plastic than any of the PalmOS devices I've used. I tried my Clie stylus, and it scratched the screen. I searched for a soft stylus among all the stylus-based devices we have at home, and finally I started using the spare stylus from my wife's HTC TouchPro2. The tip is nice and pointy, but also soft enough not to scratch the screen (or at least not much?). You can probably buy OEM ones somewhere online.
I wish I had a good way of attaching it to the device. Currently, I use the leather sleeve case, and I just tuck the stylus in--it's thin enough that it fits.

Can't say for the A43, but the A101 has a ton of space inside to make a stylus hole.

I believe the design of the 7.7 with the power and volume controls on the right side dictated where the hinge is for the book cover case .
Think about it.....If it opened right to left ,then the power and volume buttons would be on the bottom and subject to being accidentily activated when using it as a stand in landscape mode, as it would be sitting on them.Also they couldn't be used sitting on the bottom.
I've had it on since the second day I owned my 7.7 and got used to the left to right opening now. I do really love it's tight fitting, minimalist design and keeps the tab nice and thin.Feels good in my hands and gives more grip when gaming and surfing, works great as a stand and gives some protection for this beautiful screen when transporting it.
I'm not big on the other generic designs that are out there for the 7.7 right now. If you look at ones selling on Ebay ,the sellers are selling the exact one for the 7 inch ones too and look bulky.If something better comes out then I would consider it down the road but I think this is the best one out so far .

tab 7.7 case.
Im not very impressed with mine:
1: Dont like the fact it opens the wrong way. I agree they couldnt design it any other way but still dont like it.
2. After about a week the grips that keep it steady when standing up starts slipping on various surfaces. So tab keeps falling flat.
3: No option to put it in the tipical slighly tilted for typing possition like the case for tab 8.9 or 10.1
4. I can already see small cracks in the flexible rubber (hinge bit) and the cut open bit at the power button. For this price I was expecting way more.
Argh. All these mixed reviews of the OEM book cover is getting me quite confused. I don't really think I should shell out the amount of money they're asking for the case...
Maybe I'll just get an envelope/pouch from Timbuk2 or other makers while waiting for that perfect case with the multi-view angles.
As for the cover opening the "wrong" way, I think it's the right way from where the Tab was made. Most East Asia books DO operate like that. Especially mangas

I have the 8.9 with the book case. Is it the same sleek design and same thinness as the 8.9 case?
I've got the book cover the same day I got my 7.7 and first I didn't like it. The hinge was very stiff, the lid wasn't flush with the back when flipped around completely. But now I'm used to it and it's ok.
But:
- when the lid was flipped to the back for a longer time you can see the top (rubberlike) material delaminating from the hard bit inside in the hinge area
- when the lid is flipped to the back it's rather wobbly. I'm used to hold the Tab in my right hand with resting it on my spread little finger. But then the lid is always moving about and just feels quite assuring.
But it's a lot better than the Samsung pouch, which is simply waste of money.
The d30 leather pouch for the old Tab was way better but of course wasn't as light and space saving and you could always loose it when you were using the Tab.
Just got my Case today.
From all the horror stories I have been reading about it I thought it was going to be horrible but I like it so far.
First off:
It is incredibly thin and light. Adds almost no bulk at all.
Tab fits very well in the case and my hinge is not stiff at all so folds over very easily.
I dont like:
- all the corners except the top right are protected. So if you were to drop it on that corned it will dent the device.
- I actually dont like the cut out for the power. The material sticks out a little when the case is closed. Wish they didnt have cut out for it.
Besides that I think its really good. I dont think you will find another book case that will be as thin as this one.

Well yes and know. Just as sleek but the big difference is the fact that it only has one stand position unlike tab 8.9 and 10.1 design that has two. One upright and one slightly tilted/flat to type. Not sure how to explain it. Hope you understand what I mean...
I, too, like its sleekness and light weight, but I have to say I wouldn't spend $40+ again -- I think it's way overpriced for what it offers -- and that's after having numerous tablets and similar cases (most selling for under $25. If you can afford to wait for the market to catch up I'd recommend not buying this one.

I noticed on the plastic box it came in that it had an illustration for Keyboard Mode along with Media-Viewing Mode.
Anybody find out how the Keyboard Mode is supposed to work? It looks like it's propping the Tab up several inches.
I think Keyboard Mode is a mistake. There's really no way this thing can be propped up that way unless you just put something between the two sides.

I love the Samsung Case. It is quite svelt. I don't like that you only really have one angle to stand but it still looks awesome and as others have mentioned you still get a feel for how thin and light this tablet is.

I've tried a few cheap styli and not been that impressed, bought a low cost one off amazon which had a weird chiselled angled bit and was unusable (I was so disappointed).
The next one I have tried was from the pound shop! Works OK actually but not very precise, it has a squashy rounded edge.
I think I'd like to spend up to maybe a few pounds... will let you know...
Unfortunately, I have yet to find a capacitive stylus that doesn't have the big rounded end on it. I picked up a pair of cheapos off of Amazon for about seven dollars each last year, and while mine kinda fell apart (The tip was just held on with surface pressure - a little super glue fixed that), my girlfriend's has survived all the better. Plus they double as ballpoint pens, which is kind of nice - one piece of equipment, two functions.
I've been looking into getting a replacement stylus for myself, one that's longer and more like a traditional pen (the short squat ones are a little odd for me). However, none of them have a pen-like pointing tip. All of them are the rounded rubber fingertip-style tip.
Anyone else found a pen-like tip stylus ? I did some googling and found that the nice special narrow-point S-Pen for the Samsung Note won't work with standard devices like the S2 or the HTC Amaze (which sucks, because it's a good-looking tip).
That's interesting - I wonder how the stylus on the Samsung works, is there something different about the screen to recognise that stylus?
From what I read, there's another electromagnetic layer in the digitizer that allows for that stylus to work in a pressure environment - the longer / harder you press, the more "ink" shows on the screen, kind of like when you press harder with a pencil - the wider and darker the line.
Plus, from what I read, it isn't really capacitive, since it doesn't work on other tablets / phones, which sucks. I would love a fine(r)-tip stylus.

I have the tried the Targus, the Bamboo, and the Samsung model for the Galaxy Tab line. The Bamboo has a good shape and is only slightly heavier than the Targus model. Samsung is the heaviest and is balanced more the way a writing instrument/heavy ball point pen would be.
I don't think the tips are really all that different though. If price is an issue and you don't like the Targus style/look, I'd say go with the Samsung. It's around $20 on Amazon while the Bamboo will cost you $30. They both definitely feel more like writing/drawing tools, and because of that they are somewhat better at making marks.
On the other hand, there is no lack of do it yourself options out there.
